Mac's is back! Same recipes that everyone knew and loved. The prices have increased modestly. Still a steal. I'd be hard pressed to find a full prime rib meal complete with soup, bread, pasta and veggies for under $15! They don't ask how you want your prime rib cooked, but ours was a perfect medium upon arrival. The pasta is totally overcooked just like before, so I'd go for the upgraded fries next time. I was happily surprised we walked in and were seated right away for lunch at 11:30am on a Friday. I have not been to Mac's since the 90's. We liked it because it was good, prices and the staff. We went to new ownership restaurant for lunch. The remodel is beautiful. The staff were okay and the food was not good. The menu is a complete lunch with soup or salad, pasta, vegetables, bread, and a main dish. My friends both ordered the extra cut prime rib with salad. They disliked the prime rib, it was not medium well and not a good cut. It did not look appealing to me. I ordered the calamari steak with minestrone soup. I disliked my calamari cut but the minestrone soup was delicious. And we all agreed the bread and pasta was distasteful. We also could not believe how small the drinks were but it was a single. The double drink was not that much larger so unsure on the triple drink size. It's questionable if we will be back. read more

Food was tasteless and not seasoned. It was served cold, with a side of attitude from our servers and bartender. The prime rib is paper thin now. Did I mention the food was served cold? The salad tasted like it was only tossed in oil, no vinegar anywhere. The minestrone soup was better once you added salt and pepper and grated cheese. The bread and butter was the star, but how do you mess up bread and butter? Don't sit next to a window. The flies were fighting to get out. The servers and bartender need to take a class on hospitality and customer service because talk about rude. Seemed like they didn't want to be there or maybe because we were of color? Theres really nothing to complain about. Maybe not the best prime rib ever but its definitely not anywhere near bad, its actually pretty decent, and it's only $21. Everything was great considering the price (includes small side of veggies, pasta, a small plate of salad and a bowl of minestrone soup). You can add a baked potato or french fries for a small fee. I've been eating at Mac's since 1995. My first time back since they reopened. Here's my new opinion. Love the new clean appearance. Absolutely love the big CLEAN restrooms! Drink prices have increased to area standard. No more $2.50 cocktails. Lol. That's okay, because the food prices went up just slightly. That's awesome. Service was good. Still going through some understandable growing pains. That will improve. Now, the food. What happened to the soup? It is way more spicy than it used to be! I would not want to take home this new soup. I would rather have the old soup. Put a jar of hot sauce on the table if someone wants heat. Salad was good and the way I remember. Prime rib was good. I like the addition of au jus. I like the veggies a little under cooked. The pasta was a little different, but good and less of it. I think I counted 8-10 noodles. That's fine because if you have to cut cost a bit, the pasta is a good place to do it. I didn't get the baked potato, but I like they offer this. I guess an additional cost for this is fine. I like that they have sour cream now. I was able to mix my horseradish with some sour cream to tone it down. Overall good, but what happened to the soup??? read more

Ok, gave it a few days and went back for lunch after seeing on FB that they weee opened. I had to give the soup another try and see if there were any changes, and there were! The spicy flavor wasn't there this time and the soup was a bit thicker. Tasting much better and closer to the original recipe. I just had soup but saw others who got pasta and it looked amazing. Vibrant red sauce with cooked rigatoni that looked full and hearty. We will be back again for dinner soon now that things seem to be getting under way! read more

Never went to original. Heard good things about it. Went to the reopen Mac's. I did not enjoy. Minestrone cold not as good as real Italian home cooking. Salad dressing sweet. Prime rib took lots of chewing. Charged for couple of items we did not receive. It's only two weeks new owner. Just needs to get the kinks out. read more

Three ladies behind the bar, the shorter blondish hair one just seemed to have attitude could've been having a bad day. Don't have a very good selection of liquor. Took the ATM out so you can't get cash. They will take credit card for food but charge you 3% and only cash at the bar. The soup had burnt taste to it calamari was OK. The sirloin Patty was smaller and way overcook no flavor. The bread was great ,salad and pasta so so , veggies which were carrots were cooked to perfection and was great The waitress and everybody else working there were great The whole remodel looked real nice. I understand it'll take time for them to get everything in order. I will go back in a month or two and give them another try. To see if they got there stuff together and improved. read more

Super mid. Prices almost doubled, which is fine, but food also got worse. Veggies are now just cabbage and carrots. Staff is just as unfriendly but now it's not justified because the food sucks. The ground round is incredibly disappointing. Went from one of the most unique, simple, fire meals to a frozen Denny's style/quality patty. We went at the behest of my mom who used to frequent the establishment years ago and after listening to some of our neighbors talk about it. The staff was friendly a little confusing looking for the list to get on since there wasn't a hostess out front. Ordered our food and this is where things went wrong, the minestrone soup tasted more like chili then traditional minestrone but still decent, the salad came out and consisted of shredded lettuce topped with 2 whole pieces or salami with oil and pepper that's it. My son's salad had oil and vinegar so I think they were just squirting it on the lettuce. I ordered the 10oz ribeye medium and asked for the baked potato for a $3 sub fee, ridiculous but o well. What they brought me was the thinnest ribeye meat I've ever seen wasn't seasoned over cooked when I say thin I mean you could cut it up and use it for cheesesteak. It had more fat than meat so was it 10oz probably not. The vegetables were boiled cabbage and 2 sliced carrots the pasta I got wasn't appetizing at all..... keep in mind I asked for a baked potato that never came even after I asked about it and it was still on the bill so I essentially was charged $30 for maybe $10 worth of food. Everyone at the table had something wrong with their meal from the salty chicken picatta to them forgetting my daughter chicken salad which had less chicken on it than my nieces salad. I know they are under new ownership and still working out some kinks but I overhears someone say they own another restaurant in the area. I don't see us going back anytime soon. I do wish them all the best in the world and I hope they can sort out their kitchen issues soon. read more

My son and I went to Mac's for lunch today. We were so happy to have it back open. The food was great! Soup and bread exactly as we remembered it. 5 stars Ribeye sandwich was loaded with beef and served on the bread we love so much. It came with potato salad which was very tasty. Added a side of pasta, and it was really good, as well. 5 stars Cheeseburger was also very tasty, also served on the sesame seeded loaf. The meat was a bit to over peppered, but all in all a great burger. It also came with the yummy potato salad. 5 stars Where Mac's lost a star was: Service. It was a bit slow, and we were given the wrong food at first. Luckily the server grabbed the wrong plate, so it was quickly replaced, but was missing the pasta. They brought some out quickly. Ambiance. It was LOUD in there. Maybe it didn't help that we were seated by a 4-top occupied by 4 older women who maybe had issues with their hearing. We will be back. The soup and bread call me. Been at Mac's before they closed and waited 2+ hours to get seated. And the food was very good. I should say the soup and bread were awesome; the prime rib was decent. I was sad when they closed. Fast forward to the reopening under new owners. I came on a weekday, and despite many people waiting outside for a table, it took only 20 minutes for us to be seated. I understand this is an older establishment, and there was a certain smell to the room. We ordered ribeye, thick-cut prime rib, and chicken piccata. The soup and bread came out. It was still good but different, and it was warm, NOT hot soup. The bread was delicious. Salad was good too. My ribeye order was medium rare, but it came out medium, with some areas well done. The entrees were not the reason I was coming back to this place. It was one of our friends' first time coming to Mac's Old House. During our meal, she wanted to order a meal to go for her daughter, who was at home sick. The waitress stated we cannot order to go... strange; they do not want customers to spend more money? You can order food at the restaurant and then pack it up to go if you do not finish, but you cannot order to go. I wonder if there is a one-order-per-person limit when you are dining in. I can only assume that they do this to ensure that there is still enough food for the other patrons waiting to be seated. Ok, then the waitress should have stated a reason for it rather than stating we cannot order food to go. After our exchange with the waitress, her behavior towards us changed. It felt like we were taking up her time. Definitely need to train some of the workers on customer service. One of our friends who had been going to Mac's before the closure said this waitress was the only one who came back from the previous workers. Did she feel entitled, as she was the veteran? I don't know; what I do know is this waitress should not be working in any customer service-related role if she cannot provide customer service. Will I be back? Possibly, and if my party is not treated respectfully, you better believe I will be asking for the manager next time. Or leaving without a tip. read more

Well this place is about to close down for good. So we decided to give it a try. Old school place and very cosy seating and it was a little crowded in the seating areas. Food is served as you would be served in an Italian place. Orders first taken then food comes in waves to all tables . Food was quite ok for the price. I think we would have enjoyed it more had they had the open bar available. Though I did note some regulars had ordered drinks along with their meals But we did get to feel n taste of Atioch / Oakley / Brentwood era over 50 years ago and surrounded by all at least a generation older than us. Loved the new design of the restaurant. Seated at 4:15pm as a party of two. Our waiter had two large groups of 5 plus and two additional 2 tops. He was overwhelmed from the beginning. Took 20 minutes before we were ever asked a drink order. Had to get up and get my own napkins. Soup came out quickly and was luke warm. We both ordered the prime rib. It was cooked to order but no au jus and was it was also luke warm. Veggies and pasta were just ok. The substitute fries were the only thing piping hot. The new ownership has a lot of hurdles to work through before regulars will believe in them. read more

You will NOT find a better retro Italian diner steakhouse like Old Mac's. The food is very good at an exceptionally reasonable price. The service is great too. Our server has been working at Old Mac's House over 50 years!! The ambiance is retro, with sports memorabilia decorating the walls. There's a full service bar which was busy. With your entree, you get fresh veggies (not frozen), pasta, soup AND salad with your meal. The portion of your meal is very decent for the price. You will NOT find a restaurant like Old Mac's House that serves a full meal at very reasonable price point anywhere at this point in time. Old Mac's is a rarity in this day and age. Prime rib - 5/5 The regular bit is decent, approx 8 oz. The extra cut is 16+ oz. The meat was succulent and tender. The flavor and taste of the rub was light on my cut, but I still enjoyed my prime rib. Rib eye - 4/5 A decent 10 oz cut of rib eye steak, seasoned with just salt and pepper. It was cooked to perfection. Very tasty and tender. Fresh Salmon (Cajun style) - 5/5 I was surprised with this selection on how generous the salmon fillet was. The Cajun spice was not spicy hot, which I prefer. The salmon was flaky and tender. Not hard and dry. I am so sad that Mac's Old House will be closing 6/22/25. Many people and families will be sad. Please visit the Old Mac's House before they close. Be aware the wait line starts before they open at 4pm. It is worth the wait. You will not be disappointed. read more

June W. beat me to my opening comment. It's been announced that Mac's Old House will be serving their last meals on June 22, 2025, unless someone else buys the building and the business. There aren't many businesses like Mac's anymore. Banchero's of Hayward closed in 2012. Bertola's is long gone. We went tonight, a Wednesday, arriving at 3:30 for a 4:00 opening. There was already a line waiting in front for the doors to open. The parking lot was filling up as we waited. Some were happy to be there early. Others were wondering why they were having dinner at 4pm. While it was a bit early for us, I'd rather eat early than be stuck waiting 45 to 60 minutes for someone else to finish eating so I can get a table. I don't remember our servers name, but she was on top of her game. She took our orders for food and drink and brought everything that we asked for. I don't know how many tables she was serving but she definitely took care of ours. From drink orders to to-go boxes, everything went smoothly. Full dinners here include bread & butter, salad, soup, entree, veg and pasta. You choose your entree and everything else is included. Simple but delicious. Not exactly gourmet, but still pretty darned good as well as an excellent value. Our Extra Cut Prime Rib Dinners were $23.95 while the Regular Prime Rib Dinner was only $17.95. I hope to hit them up at least one or two more times before Mac's closes. read more

I will miss this place so much when they close. Such good memories of it, and the other similar restaurants like Bertola's and Louis Bertola's. The ambiance is straight old-school. We got there 40 minutes ahead of opening on a weeknight, and were second in line. By the time the place opened, there was quite a long line. The servers were excellent, prompt and quick. The food - how much better can you get than old-school food. The minestrone soup was nice and thick (almost gravy-ish). The bread - wow wow wow - such good Italian bread. Crispy and soft too. And the salad! We used to laugh that there was always a slice of salami for every diner. Yep, still the case! We had the Prime Rib, standard cut. Wow, I miss having a good piece of prime rib like this. No nonsense! The horseradish was a kick - much sharper than I've had it at other places! The pasta and veggies were also good (but I was already kinda stuffed from the bread to really notice them!). All in all, such a good place. We visited Old Mac's house (OMH) during its soft opening. The outside, parking lot & inside looked bright and nicely redone. We only had to wait 45 minutes to get seated... not bad for OMH. We sat at the bar waiting for our table.. we had sodas ($3) with free refills. The menu look the same with higher prices. For example, prime rib $21.95. The service was good and quick. Once we sat down, the waiter came by and we were ready to order. We got the minestrone soup with the bread. It was a slight disappointment for me because I loved the minestrone soup but now it was a bit spicier too spicy for me. The bread was as tasty as ever soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. Then came the salad, which was OK. We hadn't finished the salad when the main course came. The prime rib looked good, tender and tasted good but a quarter of it was fat. The cabbage vegetable with broccoli was just OK. The pasta was lukewarm and just OK. The service was great. I realize it's a soft opening so we will probably try it again but it'll be in a few months. read more

The soup has been cooked enough, the extra prime rib is like the regular prime rib, the drinks aren't what you ordered and the staff is not as friendly as the former staff. Just ate our last meal at Mac's. For 40 years we've enjoyed meals here and picking up soup and bread to have some comfort food. This is the restaurant we ate at the night before we had our first child. As our son grew his first solid food that he loved were the carrots from the soup. At 33 he still loves the soup and we are bringing some home with us for him and the other kids so they can enjoy the soup for the last time. Thank you Julie for being so kind throughout the years. You can't beat the food (steaks) for the price. It's always busy and packed in her, but the hosts still do a great job getting you seated and food served quickly. The skinny, tall blonde older bartender was extremely unprofessional, micro aggressive and rude. Me and my boyfriend are Hispanic and as soon as we came in she had a disgusted look on her face. No hospitable greet whatsoever. An older white couple comes in and she enthusiastically greets them and welcomes them in. My boyfriend orders a vodka cranberry and she gives him a shot glass of vodka with a hint of cranberry. When he asks for a larger cup and more cranberry she rudely tells him that's what he ordered and to basically deal with it. I was standing behind him at the bar when she loudly asked for my id and I told her I didn't have it on me. I wasn't drinking at all. She then goes on to accuse me of taking a sip of his "drink". I tell her I didn't take a drink and to look at the cameras. The older white couple beside her hears and she proceeds to tell them "I know what I saw and that's against the fucking law" she then proceeds to talk about me to other patrons at the bar. Extremely disgusting lack of customer service and hospitality. The vibes here are racist and unwelcoming. I will never step foot in here again. i came in around 6:30 , i was wearing a black long dress if they'd like to check the cameras. Im also in the service industry and would never EVER speak to even a rude guest this way. We waited about an hour and a half for a table on a Thursday evening and were lucky to get seats at the bar. They do allow you to take drinks out front in paper cups while waiting for a table. The lone bartender was extremely busy and close to his limit of frustration in his interactions with customers. Dinner format is soup, salad, sides of mixed vegetables and pasta with all entrees. Menu entrees are limited to a few fish and beef or chicken options. Prices extremely reasonable. read more

Mac's will soon be close, but you will step back in time if you visit. This place is blue collar bang for the buck, large hardy servings of Italian influenced food and inexpensive cocktails too like your in the 60s and 70s having grown up in San Francisco and south San Francisco. I don't think you can find a better value these days but this is not a refined experience but down to earth real folks without pretense. Parking was tight but we found a spot. Long time patrons offered an average wait time that was completely inaccurate to their surprise not realizing that the last minute frenzy to visit before closure was not a consideration. Came here on a Monday around 6pm, the anticipated wait time was about 1hr 30mins but we were called after 30mins. They don't do digital waitlists so you will have to stick around. The atmosphere was very lively since there's also a bar and everyone was very friendly. The servers were very quick and attentive despite the high volume of people. They serve soup and bread given in a large bowl to share with your table and salad afterwards as your starters before you receive your entree that additionally comes with pasta and veggies. The soup reminded me of Chef Boyardi ravioli and the salad was loaded with vinegar dressing I had the Ribeye Steak done medium rare, it was delicious and juicy! The pasta marinara was very salty but actually tasted much better the day after when i had my leftovers. The prime rib was also juicy and tasted great as well. Definitely satisfied my hunger! Please note it's a cash only establishment but they have an ATM if needed. Overall, it almost felt like eating dinner with family/friends at home with some good food and positive vibes.
