We made a delightful visit here after leaving the Railroad Museum, which is just across the way. It's a walk up shop, so no interior to enter, just order from the sidewalk at the counter. There is a fairly large menu of food, drinks, & sweets available. They also serve Gunther's Ice Cream & Freezes. The man working was very pleasant & nice. We ordered 6 mini donuts. It was cute to be able to watch them cruise along the oil river & cook in the window. When he presented them to us, he included 2 extra donuts! They were melt-in-your-mouth light & tender. When we ordered, we asked for chocolate glaze, & we ended up with a light sauce that soaked into the hot donuts. Great ice cream and mini donuts at Mad Hatter Doughnuts. Mad Hatter Doughnuts is a small walk up shop in old Sacramento that sells mini donuts and Gunther's fruit freezes and Gunther's ice cream. For the mini donuts, you can choose toppings, which include original glaze, cinnamon, sugar, powdered sugar, chocolate drizzle, caramel drizzle or Nutella. For each 4 donuts, you can choose a different topping. We came here on a sunny Saturday afternoon and ordered six mini donuts with chocolate drizzle and a Gunther's 50-50 freeze with ice cream. The donuts were fried and tasted delicious, especially with the added chocolate drizzle. For the 50-50 freeze with ice cream, we chose guava freeze, chocolate ice cream, and strawberry freeze. All of the flavors were so delicious! Perfect for a nice warm afternoon. The female worker that took our order was very friendly and gave good recommendations. The donuts came out extremely fast! I hadn't even finished ordering the ice cream and the donuts were already on the counter ready for me. The workers were also trying to catch a flying bee, and they ended up catching it. Perfect spot to grab a bite before heading to the museums. There will be a line but it will move quickly. The young lady at the counter was very friendly. She thanked me for waiting (I really did not wait that long) and she was very energetic with a welcoming spirit and bright smile. The locals seem to love this place. It is window service only but there are a couple of benches and a table just out front if don't want to walk and eat. I do recommend taking your food to go because the surroundings are so lovely and worth the stroll. I had 6 mini spice donuts and they were hot and fresh, they basically melted in my mouth. I wish the cinnamon flavor was more pronounced though. I also got a regular scoop of rocky road in a waffle cone (which are made fresh!). The ice cream was among the best I've ever had and the waffle cone was still warm when it was handed to me. I had an elite experience here and I'll be back. read more

Our 2 year old massively got into trains several months ago, so we decided to invest in a membership to the Railroad museum next door. As a treat, one of our multiple trips each week is ended with a couple of scoops at Mad Hatter! The fact that they serve Gunther's ice cream is a huge plus, as well as delicious freezes, and even some canned/bottled beverages. We haven't tried the namesake doughnuts yet, but certainly had it on the list for an upcoming trip. However, I'm not certain we'll be coming back. We parked in front of Mad Hatter around 3PM on Thursday 10/9 and unloaded to head to the museum next door. I needed a kick of energy, so I stood waiting in front of an unattended counter to order a Celsius. A young man approached me from behind and asked what I wanted. I was confused, mentioned the drink, and he walked around the corner to go back into the business. No big deal. I got my drink and hopped over to see some trains. At around 4:50 we left the museum and went straight to Mad Hatter again, this time for some ice cream. Again, the counter was unattended, but the same young man (who apparently was sitting on the bench nearby) popped up as we approached and announced "I have 8 more minutes left on my 30, and then I'll be back." Fair enough. Everyone deserves their breaks, but there was no one else that could help us get ice cream, apparently, so we decided to kill some time wandering around Old Sac. We came back around 5:15 and the business was closed up. We were confused because we thought it was open until at least 5:30 or 6, and why would you take a break just to come back and close shop? I'm not really sure what happened, but it seemed like this young man really didn't want us to have ice cream, nor really want to help anyone. I've stopped by this donut shop on a few occasions and noticed they no longer sell "donut holes" but instead they are called "knots". Basically fried dough in the shape of a knot avail in different flavors. The OG glaze and powdered flavors were very sweet but so good! The knots are fried to a crisp, with a chewy texture. There is a cashier that sits at the open window that will take your order and answer any questions you have about their donuts, she's helpful and greeted us with a smile. The ambiance is a fast food vibe as it's just an order window for food to go with a bench out front offering limited seating. There is no inside seating. The sad part is that I was able to place the order online. However when I got there they didn't have any record of the order or payment. I found out the resturant is not set up to receive the online orders. I showed her my order on my phone. She made a fresh order for me. They were delicious. However there was a lady who I assumed works there and she had her dog in the store, running around and leaving hair everywhere, it kinda turned me off from the food but I still waited anyway. But the line was pretty long and this lady kept talking so much to every customer as they got up to the front, not every single customer needs to hear the story of your shop, it just made the wait so much longer and the people behind me even left. This review is based off the shady charge. I bought 2 drinks and doughnuts. It was overpriced but was ok as we were having a good time. Doughnuts and drinks were good and the service was good. We even helped the them out when another customer short changed them 74 cents and dropped them a dollar. Even a 15% tip was added. Later that evening, I got an email from my card company that the charge changed without explanation. Now the charge was $41.40 for a box of doughnuts and 2 drinks. My wife and I were originally devastated when we saw Danny's Donuts close down but the new owner and proprietor is awesome! You can get both Danny's donuts former kind AND the newer kind which I actually prefer (although my wife glares at me when I say that).
