Same owner as City Donuts! Nice woman who we saw behind the counter at City Donuts. We were looking for old-fashioned cinnamon rolls which she said they don't have yet, so we got a couple things to go; apple fritter and donut holes. Taste was the same as anywhere, very convenient location. I am commanded to grab donuts by my four year old. I search for the nearest one and Variety Donuts pop up. They close at 12:00pm so I have to be quick to get on the road to make it before they close. The person working is very nice and influenced me to come back a second time and to continue to come here. So easy for my four year old to choose which donut she wants to try and eats most of it when we arrive at home. The ambiance is just like any other donut shop, quiet with the smell of fresh baked goods. Parking is not too bad, since it's early, there should be a lot of parking. read more

The gentleman behind the counter welcomes you with a smile and is an extremely nice guy. I ordered a dozen special which mixes the fancy and regular doughnuts and I ordered one big doughnut box. I've purchased donuts for my staff and families for work at least 20 times in the past 3 years and this place is my go to. The owner is so kind and welcoming. I literally have his shop programmed into my phone and can just text him my order in the morning and know he will always have it ready to go at the requested time. My staff was always pleased by the quality and freshness, too. The shop is nothing fancy. Each time I go in, I'm checked over by the crowd of regulars of the older, male, retired persuasion. :) Not offensive, you can just tell that this place is part their regular routine and they are interested in the goings-on of their shop. Usually one or two of them politely offer to help me load my boxes into my car. I'm honored by the courtesy. Always bemused by the open carton of half-and-half in the beverage bin. Speaks to a casual, familial atmosphere of not putting on airs and what's mine is yours. Buy your coffee and touch it up how you like, as you like. I was trying to find a local doughnut store closer to me in West Sacramento. I just moved here not long ago. I walked into this place around 5:30 am I guess opening time. I was greeted by this very friendly guy who was the part owner of this establishment. They had a very few dohnuts on display and I bought two sugar tossed doughnuts. They were amazing and very flavorful. Sadly I had to stay up late again to get in on their amazing fluffy goodness that only these guys can provide. I love this place!! Convienient, just a block from the highway. Each donut it 3.5 lbs (ok, maybe a bit less) and a work of art not to mention taste amazing. I've been back everyday this week for a dozen for my class and don't want to leave! Just another shop. Another bike ride. Another mundane trip down memory lane. But what I'm enjoying about this brief stint without the usual issues is that so far I've yet to be hit from behind and second, I've noticed that men are more forgiving when I'm attempting to cross a busy street. They actually stop and wave me through. Not with my brother. They forget he's part of the two wheeled construct and usually almost hit him and I know this because I can then hear his cursive stream echoing behind me. Variety Donuts is exactly that. While I've consumed and acquired the pounds and sweet tooth usually associated with these food lists, I would have to state that they offer a generic variety of donuts ranging from the usual cake donuts to funky snails slathered with glaze and still my favorite, the glazed buttermilk loaf. Staff here are jovial and I enjoyed sitting, munching, and observing the movements of people out and about their business. My buttermilk loaf was pretty good, but there was just a little too much crunch to the sides. I'm not too inclined towards a crinkly donut. Fries, sure, but not donuts :) If you come early in the morning like we did, there is a slight crowd of locals and consistent clients that know exactly what they want and how many: one two three dozen for work and other social fits of sugared fancy. Came here early in the morning last week with my Dad. It's his go-to stop for quality morning donuts. Decided to share with his favorite location and spend some time together and since I had just gotten off work (10 hr. swing shift) he thought to treat me out for breakfast just a bit. I have been to this donut shop a couple of time. The donuts are your average donuts you would get at the grocery store bakery but its fresh. They have all your standards, glazed, sugar, chocolate, cinnamon twist, old-fashion, and cake donuts. The prices are very good, around $.75 for a donut when I was there. The store looks old on the inside and outside, when I was there there were a lot of elderly people in there drinking coffee, eating donuts, and reading the paper. Work brought these in for breakfast and ordered 4 dozen. I was told they love this place but I did not. Maybe it was an off day but they tasted like day old donuts. Very dry and dense. I usually just get a regular plain glaze but the glaze was wet and melted like you see in the grocery store at the end of the day. They were also about 10% more in cost vs. comparable donut shops in the area but also told they throw in a few extra. I guess that is one way to build sales. This is the best general purpose donut shop I have found between Dixon and the Sacramento river. The donuts, fritters, raisin bars, twists, and all the other delicious items smell and taste fresh. Service is friendly, and there is usually a convivial neighborhood crowd in the morning. Even though the lot is small, I've never had a problem parking. It's not bad. When I showed up (around 9:30am) there wasn't much to choose from. All I wanted was a French Cruller and they were out of 'em. But the Apple Fritters looked delicious so I took one, and it wasn't half bad. That was two stars worth. I care take an elderly couple who've been house-bound for a few years. The last couple months they've had a hankerin' for maple bars, so I've been swinging into this donut shop three times a week. The guy who runs the place is super nice, always smiles, has a good sense of humor and throws in an extra donut on each visit. I feel like he's a bartender, remembering my order each visit. =) Mr. & Mrs. G don't want me going anywhere else...they prefer these donuts and they're much larger in size than the grocery store donuts.
