Where do I start ‍ first walking in, I thought there was going to be this cool Alice in Wonderland vibe, but I didn't get a good sense of that. It was just lacking.... something. Now, onto the important stuff. No one said a word to us when we walked in. We felt stupid trying figure where we needed to be to get seated. We finally asked the busser we could get the attention of. We were seated at this dirty, awkwardly placed table. Took 25 minutes for Ianyone to even take our order. I got my bar beverage before my mom got her coke. Took over an hour and a half for our meals to be placed on the table. I got a burger, which was good, and Mac n cheese, which had a weird taste to it. The nastiest spoon was placed with the mac n cheese. It was so gross. Old, hard, stale food on the spoon. My mom got the Texas Style Barbeque Brisket, which she said was good. I never give a one to anywhere as I claim to love everyone and everything but this place just sucks. I took a friend here for brunch when she visited and also a night out and had 2 terrible experiences. During brunch, our waiter was really nice, but the service was so slow for a low amount of people at the restaurant or whatever you'd call this place. In addition, their bathrooms smelled of vomit and pee from the night before. When you go to a brunch after a long night out, who wants to be reminded of vomit again? Not me, or anybody I bet!! Also, the food was sub par/inedible as my chicken and waffles had a nasty chunky gravy on it. I did tell my waiter I wanted it separate, but this chunky gravy just took over the whole meal and ruined it!! My friend and I were honestly disgusted at coming here and told her I would redeem this place by coming on Thursday night. Later in the week, my friend and I came for dollar beer Thursday! Um, can I just say that this place is amazing? I used to be a professional boozy bruncher in my younger years (ok like last year...) so I've been to LOTS. I really wish I had experienced Madhatter back when I "could hang". With that said, I don't think I laid eyes on my glass with less than just a sip missing from it. And of course what do I do with a full glass? I drink it. The food, PHENOMENAL. I think the best French Toast I've ever had. And they're dipped in baileys. Like, what? That just sounds like a good time. Thankfully this was my last stop before passing out on a bus back home to NYC because I was totally tipsy and totally stuffed. We didn't have reservations and arrived just in time to catch a spot at the bar, there was a 45 minute wait for a table. I wish I remembered the bartenders name because she was awesome and from NY. Madhatter has a policy that your whole party has to be there before you are seated. Most places require only half your party to be there. We had to wait 40 minutes because one of our group members was stuck in traffic. We explained the situation to the hostess and she still made us wait. Forget the fact that the place was empty (as pictured below) and we would have been seated at the same table even if we were only a group of 4. This is a ridiculous and senseless policy. We ordered buffalo chicken tenders to start. We received regular chicken tenders. Fine-we were hungry so we didn't send them back, but that was mess up one. Another group member ordered turkey bacon with her egg dish but instead received turkey sausage. The waitress made her pick the sausage off her plate and put it onto another plate. She said "give me the sausage and I'll bring you out bacon." Not sure what they did with that sausage? Generally when something is already on someone's plate, you just bring out the correct item. It was very strange to watch my friend pick up the sausage from her plate and transfer it to the bread plate in the waitress' hands, and then watch the waitress bring it back to the kitchen. I still want to know what they did with it. Then the check came. Gratuity (20 %) was included...for a party of 5. The standard is generally 18% on a party of 6 or more. I am not happy with being forced to give a waitress a 20 % tip when we are a small party who had to wait 40 minutes and then have not the most pleasant dining experience. The food was mediocre. The music was loud. But their bottomless drink specials looked like a good deal, so if you are looking for a spot to get shwasted for $14, and don't care about food or service, this might be a good option! read more

I've been to Madhatter a few times while living in Arlington and it's pretty much the same every time we go! It's not a bad spot, in the middle of Dupont so there is a lot of stuff around. There's usually not much of a line and I don't think I've ever seen them charge a cover. It's usually alllllways packed though. Like uncomfortably packed - especially at the entrance getting into the bar and then the dance floor. I think towards the back there's also an upstairs that they only let a few people into at a time. The drinks are priced about the same as any other mid-tier DC bar but the real draw for this place is the Hat they sell. It's $30 for the hat but a few people can sip on it for a while and its full of alcohol so it's a pretty good buy. If you don't mind packed bars that run on the hot side, this place is pretty fun. read more

FRIDAY NIGHT DANCE FLOOR AND BAR REVIEW Let's start out by saying I am not a high society girl. I never have been and never will be. I am one who simply enjoys the little pleasures in life and can appreciate a great laugh or perfect people watching spot... double bonus points if these places can provide both. Madhatter delivers in these categories without very much effort. Let's start out with the demographic. It is seriously mixed. You have newly 21 year old girls wearing basically nothing and pearls. How does that work? That's a good question. Then you have the late 20s/early 30s frat dudes from SEC schools with the plaid shirts and boat shirts trying to pull some tail with the newly 21's. You have some girls trying too hard, some girls trying too little, some hipsters, a couple of minorities in there outside of the pastey white folks and the fake bakes, then me -- the watchful observer who sits back in amusement thinking this should be some sort of reality show or possibly mating ritual. I tell you one thing -- the drinks here are the stars of the show. They're not weak, and they're reasonably priced. Nothing over the top for rail alcohol. Dance floor was fun. They play some remixes and a lot of Top 40 with a spit of 90s hip hop like Biggy and Tupac to keep it real. White people can't dance.. we all know this and accept this as a fact of life. Therefore, everyone is pretty much swaying back and forth 'dancing' in place standing there with their drinks or the girls are grinding on the guys like their going to town. Pick your poison. Either way you're going to look pretty good after one drink. Thank goodness I stuck to a club soda and my friend drank on my behalf since I was driving us. All in all, I think the Madhatter means well. The amusement of this place is enough reason alone to check it out. Come in around 12:30AM on a Friday night and you'll see what I mean. The hatter drink was good but despite how much rum we saw poured in it me and the other 2 people I shared it with didn't seem to feel much of a buzz. Nachos were just ok. At first, and when you read most of the reviews, Madhatter sounds like a shady bar with the worse food ever. Don't be mistaken! The week ambience is pretty good with nice servers and daily specials. The first time i experienced Madhatter was on a Sunday where we basically just used it as our night watering hole. Plenty of tv's to stare at. Last night (Monday) I went there again due to their happy hour. They offer $3 Yuenglings and $5 bar food. I ordered the mozarella sticks and they were pretty decent. Even got some greens with it. When i was going to the restroom, i saw Monday night special is half off bottle of wine AND $15 lobster!!! After making sure that I wouldn't get sick by reading every review on here, i realized, nobody complains about the food. So i'll give it a shot. The lobster was perfect! Lots of meat, well cooked. Only thing that i didn't like where the potato wedges, they were very peppery but still very edible. While there was a trivia night going on the back, the bar got pretty busy. I enjoyed talking to some lovely ladies. The bartenders Audrey and Steph were doing a great job, keeping the conversation up and making my laugh. Madhatter is a fun bar. The Thursday night two dollar mugs are an excellent/terrible life choice depending on how you look at it. There is a pretty big dancefloor, bar area, etc. and the vibe is a bit more upscale. I came here for a brunch party once. It's a $200 minimum to get a private room (with its own bathroom!) which isn't hard, especially if you get a lot of drinks. We were a large party but the waiter kept messing up our orders and some of the food came out cold. Though it was still a fun time, I don't know if I would do brunch again. read more

I've been to Madhatter multiple times for three different occasions. 1. Happy Hour 2. Brunch 3. Drinks and Dancing. It should be noted that this rating is NOT for the table-service provided at brunch, but for Drinks and Dancing because that's what I used to go here the most for. So let's break it down... HAPPY HOUR. I have to say first and foremost that Madhatter has a pretty good happy hour deal. You can get a mango margarita that has a pretty good kick to it at $4 a glass. There's also other deals and nightly specials. BRUNCH. Two words: Bottomless Mimosas. The beauty of brunch in DC. I ordered the french toast and it wasn't amazing, but it wasn't horrible. The food overall isn't your five-star chef kind of food, it's pretty average but worth the money you're shelling out for it. The mimosa deal makes it all worth it though especially if your server is super attentive and keeps them coming. I was a happy camper because that's just what our waitress did. Also, you have the option of sitting outside on the patio or inside. Also, I found it quite nifty and unique that there's a DJ inside when you're eating brunch. SERVICE. For brunch, our waitress was very attentive and was able to accommodate the needs of both my friends and myself. At the bar it's kind of hit-or-miss, especially when it's super busy or if you're there when the bar slowly changes into more of a club-like scene. DRINKS AND DANCING. As I said earlier, there's usually some nightly deals so that's something to look forward to if you're going to the Madhatter. The DJ is fairly decent and it can either be super crowded or dead depending on which nights you decide to go out, but Madhatter isn't a horrible place to go every once in a while. The biggest thing that I can say to you is that Madhatter isn't horrible, but it isn't the best bar in town (which isn't hard since DC is overflowing with different bars and music venues), but PLEASE be cautious and aware of your stuff when you go here on your night out. I'm all for having a good time, but I've heard of way too many horror stories of people getting pick-pocketed and having their phones stolen by the end of the night. Madhatter during the day versus Madhatter at night on the weekends are two very different vibes. DAYTIME REVIEW: I went with my friend on a weekday to this establishment for their happy hour. It was not very crowded and we were able to seat ourselves immediately. I have never seen their restaurant menu before that first experience. My thoughts were that for DC, it was very affordable. What a nice surprise! They had a handful of discounted drink options on their menu that you could choose from. I ordered a Frozen Mangorita with a Hatter's Pizza. I had an altercation with the older bartender who works on Monday evening. I was denied service because of this employee. Working in the hospitality industry for over 10 years, I have never had an experience where a patron was denied service because of a particular employee who was working that evening. To deny a repeat guest for one instance with a single employee who works ONE night out of the week is completely absurd. ​I have been coming to Madhatters for over 2 years and have NEVER had any conflict with any of the other employees. I am truly displeased with the fact that this employee virtually met no consequences for getting into a physical alteraction with a customer , let alone a woman. I will be getting the owners contact info . Because to be denied service at a bar where I pay money for services to be denied by said service when the employee is of Caucasian decent feels a lot like segregation as a black woman. I am truly disgusted with how the managers have handled this situation. And then to tell me that I can't come on a certain day because he is working is quite astonishing. To allow him to not service me, but still allow him to work , and not provide any accommodations for me as a patron is just bad business. But one of our party quickly received their wings two of us waited another ten minutes for the waitress to come back to retake our order. The wings had absolutely no sauce or seasoning on them. During my recent visit to DC, a friend recommended that I try Madhatter. I made reservations ahead of time and came with Ken L. on a Sunday for brunch at 12:30pm. Even with reservations, we still had to wait awhile before we were seated. Due to mixed reviews, I was most looking forward to experiencing the Alice in Wonderland theme of the restaurant. The restaurant had a bar area and seating upstairs and downstairs. There were many large groups during this hour and service was EXTREMELY slow! Good thing there were tv's everywhere where we were seated and had something to watch while we waited. When we were finally able to order, Ken L. decided on the Belgium Waffle with Fried Chicken and Gravy while I settled for the Mad Man Breakfast which came with two buttermilk pancakes, eggs, toast, and house potatoes. The eggs and toast were flavorless, the pancakes were okay, and the only thing that was pretty good were the house potatoes. For the price, we definitely were not getting our money's worth and I felt we could have gone somewhere else for better service and food. Came here on New Year's Day for brunch after a night of some heavy drinking (obvi, because that's what we do on NYE, ammiright?). Anyway, it was a party of 8 and we got seated upstairs by the window. The ambiance is very relaxed and it brings a good mix of people from young to old, from friends to family. The upstairs seating was a little cold though. When we were seated, our waiter was "eh" to say the least. I gave him props for being an old dude but service was slow and we were all starving. I got the steak and eggs and I tried the Alaskan Eggs Benny off of my boyfriend's plate. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium rare and it was pretty much well-done. Also, out of the 3 cups of coffee I drank, only one was hot. All the other cups were luke-warm. Prices are average considering the portions they give too. Overall, it was just AIGHT. I forgot to review last weekend so here goes. I came here with a few co workers for brunch. The space is quite accomodating due to the circumstances, we were seated within 5min and we didn't make a reservations!!! We ordered so many things off the menu and shared it all. Waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, french toast, home fries, turkey bacon and it was all delicious. We had bottomless mimosas a few shots and a pitcher of margaritas(still clapping hands in excitement) overall we loved it and will definitely go back. My first memories of DC bar crawling was as a 23-year old newly transplanted DC resident. I used to go to the former location on M St., drink all night long on Wednesdays (Ladies night) for $10.00, and get up and teach the next morning. Well, that was two decades ago... The new space on Connecticut is much more chic. It was awfully great as we all went for their Grand Opening celebration. A few of us did get a chance to elbow pass the massive hordes and check out the different levels. I am not sure whether the top level, where we sipped and dined is intended for private functions in the future or not, but it was quite nice, with a bar to ourselves. The drink menu is large and the food choices are better than most places. Tara L.'s friend had a lobster and crab cake that was huge, and looked really good. My roommate turned 22 this past week, so she hosted her birthday dinner at Madhatter because she loves Alice in Wonderland and it is a short walk away from where she works. I got there late, but I enjoyed my experience. Our server was really nice and attentive. My crab cake sandwich was super yummy and it was served with steak fries. (I'm not the biggest fan of steak fries, but that's just me personally.) My boyfriend looooooved his burger, but we're not sure if it's because their burgers are amazing or because he was starving. XD The decor here is definitely fun. Since it was a birthday and I was dreadfully late, I ordered the Hatter's Punch for us to share. The concept is super fun. The green rum punch is served in a giant clear plastic tophat with a bunch of long giant straws. It makes for a funny, if slightly awkward, drink-sharing experience. It is NOT a lot of rum, however, so do be aware of that. I wasn't peeved because I have only just started drinking, as did my roommate, but I can understand the complaints about paying $30 for so little alcohol. Also, you don't get to keep the hat. We were pretty sad. :( The restaurant is really nice in that they helped us surprise my roommate with their giant martini glass sundae dessert thing. It had brownies, Oreo cookie bits, ice cream, maraschino cherries, chocolate sauce, whipped cream... it was delicious and my roommate was pleasantly surprised. With a giant punch tophat and martini glass on the table, the Madhatter proved to be a really fun place to celebrate a birthday for someone who likes Alice in Wonderland. I came to Madhatter on President's Day for Brunch before heading back to NYC. Apparently holiday brunch is not a big thing in DC as the restaurant was mainly empty and the staff stated that they had a "modified" brunch menu they were testing out for the day. Surprisingly, when we went the day before, we were told that the wait was over an hour for a table! The food was basically, "meh", nothing impressive, the pancakes were hard and difficult to cut, one had to use a lot of syrup the make them edible. The eggs were fine, the best part of the meal was the home fries. The service was lackadaisical for such an empty day. It took a while for the food the arrive and the servers were slow with refilling water and tea. It took a while to receive the check, and we were a bit pressed for time to get back downtown. I've only been here for the nightlife, so I can't speak to the experience early on. But, if you come late on a Friday or Saturday, you're in for a good time. A club in Dupont right near the Metro with no cover all night? That's tough to beat. After starting out at a chill place like Mighty Pint or Big Hunt nearby, this is a great place to come dance the night away. The Alice in Wonderland decor is also pretty awesome - that massive hat is a great backdrop to a night of dancing, especially once you've got several drinks in you. The only caveat is the crowd. I'm not one who usually takes issue with a packed dance floor, but I'm not sure I've ever experienced one quite this packed. Every time I've went (5 or 6 times), you could barely move on the floor. But, if you find a good spot near a wall and stake out a little alcove for yourself, and don't mind getting nudged a bit, you'll be good to go. When I'm drinking and in the mood to dance, I don't mind those things so much, so I keep going back for more. And given the size and drunkenness of the crowds, the bathrooms are surprisingly clean. I've only been here on Saturday night when it turns into a bar/club, but I had a blast! If you want to dance to some EDM type of music and don't mind a crowd, give Madhatter a try! Their decor was great, in my opinion, and definitely fitting for the name of the place. I will say, my friends and I bought the "big hat" drink (not sure what it is really called but it's Rum Punch in an awesome hard plastic hat) and it was worth it. Between the three of us, it was more than enough to share and only came out to $33 before the tip. It was delicious and a great conversation starter! If you like the busy crowded scene but don't actually like being in the crowd, there is a second floor (where the DJ is) and there is a smaller bar. My friend and I were in DC for 1 night and wanted "just one beer" after dinner. It was Sunday, and Madhatter had a $3 or $4 beer special for everything on tap. How could we resist? This place had like 10 people in the bar, but it was Sunday night so I imagine everything was kind of dead. It filled the job of serving beers, but that was about it for us. Nothing special. I recently ended up at the Madhatter on a Saturday night in downtown DC with a few friends. Before entering the Madhatter we had to wait in line, which moved quicker then I expected. And at the end of the line I was shocked to find there was no cover charge! Wahoo! When you enter the bar, there is a huge sweaty dance floor to your left and a bar that runs the entire length of the building to your right. Additionally there are a few booths on the first level. The second floor at the Madhatter is a little calmer- but still pretty crowded. There is alot more seating upstairs. The Madhatter has an Alice In Wonderland theme- and they did a good job and carrying this theme throughout the bar. Ordering your drink is no easy task here- the bartenders were rude and didn't seem interested in helping me. The beer was more expensive then other places- city prices. But, they did have a very unique drink- a huge plastic hat filled with all kinds of blue liquid. The drink costs $35- and that's just for the drink- no keeping the hat. The DJ did a great job- he had plenty of people down on the dance floor. He also shot confetti from the second floor every hour which enhanced the party mood. read more
