My husband and I went to Madhatter on Sunday February 26, 203 @ 1:30 pm for lunch. This was our first time in Washington so we were unaware of this place. All we knew it was a place to get some food and a dew drinks. We sat at the bar and ordered 2 cocktails while we looked over the menu. Started off rough as the bartender gave my husband limes in his drinks (1 cocktail and one water) instead of the lemon he requested. Had to call him back over to fix the problem. Fredy wasn't very attentive but did eventually come over to take our order. We ordered a burger, a Cesar Salad and two more cocktails. What I found strange is he asked me for my credit card before putting the order in. Is that normal in Washington D.C.? Took a little while to get our food even though the place wasn't really that busy. The staff had time to stand around and chat while we ate. Fredy didn't check on us as we ate and only came back to see if he had finished. He removed the plates and didn't come back until I called him over and asked for the check. Check arrives and to my dismay I see a line item of "Open Grat Amount" of $12.98! The gratuity added automatically was at a 22% rate!!!! This wasn't disclosed before we ordered. I know at some places they automatically add a 18% gratuity for parties of 8 or more but for 2 of us??? Oh and at the bottom of the bill it says "Gratuity is not included". Like hell it's not. Total scam. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. read more

Really fun place! Came with a small group of friends and we had a good time. Definitely order a hat, it was crazy! Music was fun and there was a good place to dance, the only thing is that when I was there the tv was glitching and kept showing photos of Ghislaine Maxwell. I love going to Madhatter, it has a great upbeat atmosphere and I always find myself here on the weekends. The bartenders upstairs are the best! Very friendly and very quick service. However, I was there on a Wednesday night and the bartender downstairs was a very rude and bitter old man. I ordered shots and beers for my friends and I, and he was very sharp and used quite offensive language with us. If you're looking for a good place to dance and end the night, I highly recommend the second floor. DJ Rod and DavyJones are the best and are always accommodating to whatever songs we want to hear!! read more

I've never had a bad experience here but this is only the second time I've eaten here and the only time I've come in specifically to try the food. I wanted to try the salmon and was very pleased. It was a good portion and it wasn't heavy. It did fill me up but I wasn't stuffed but I wasn't hungry at all. Everything was well done and not over cooked. The presentation of the meal was nice as well. I expected a lot less than what was presented. I ate at the bar because I was alone but it was where I wanted to be to watch one of the many TVs they have. The bartender promptly greeted me and checked on me in a timely fashion to see when I was ready to order. She gave me my drinks pretty fast and checked with me shortly after receiving my food to see if I needed anything else. I did have to get her attention to get some more water but as soon as I got her attention she was already reaching for my water glass when I asked so I was pleased that she was paying attention. Was I impaired while at the Madhatter? Sure. Can I honestly provide a review of their food...probably not. All I have to say is, get the nachos. They were delicious and the plate they came out on was huge. The cheese topper is both shredded cheese and a queso, and the queso is what makes the plate. When I lived in Palisades, I spent a lot of time in DuPont Circle, but for some reason, I never happened upon Madhatter. I wish I had because it's quite a gem. When you walk in there's a bar but off to the left is a large dining room that even has a few booths for those of us who love them. They had a few beers on tap and I always choose the local, but, unfortunately, they were out of the only local beer. I went with a Fat Tire, which is reliably enjoyable. I liked the menu and chose a brisket platter. While waiting for the food to come out, I noticed that the servings seemed large. Frankly, the burgers were enormous. Love that! My brisket had a tasty BBQ sauce and a mound of chopped Cole slaw (my favorite kind!), and wedge French fries. As suspected, it was too much for me. I ate half the tender, delicious brisket and potatoes and ate all the slaw. I ate the leftovers for dinner the next day. I now have a go-to spot in DuPont Circle! read more

We didn't come here thinking we were going to eat dinner. We came to this place to do some cheap drinking with intentions of going out after. Well we got hungry and decided to eat and then kept the drinks flowing. One thing lead to the next and we ended up leaving here hammered at about 1230 am. Anyway, as I mentioned we didn't come for the food so what we got from this place didn't surprise me. We got an order of the garlic parm wings and an order of fried calamari. The wings were actually a little too well done (which is something you hardly ever hear me say). They unfortunately were a little dry. They weren't bad though, definitely weren't the worst wings I've ever had. The calamari, again, wasn't the worst I've had but by far wasn't the best. Typically calamari is served with some sort of peppers mixed in it which is great. I love some calamari with some hot peppers . However this order of calamari had fried banana peppers mixed in which just felt lazy to me. I'm not sure if they are supposed to be that way or the cook just didn't feel like it that night and threw them in the fryer with the calamari. As I mentioned, we didn't come here to eat. Sunday birthday brunch took place at this busy place. My friend got a private room so I cannot speak on the restaurant atmosphere but the room was nice with its own bathroom. There was a live DJ spinning which was a nice touch. The special event was a prix fixe menu with bottomless mimosas and champagne which they were very generous with. They def stuck to their word of being bottomless! My main deductions come from the food. I ordered the hangover helper and it was really mediocre with no added spice and a lukewarm temperature. I can't say anything bad about this place. I had the french toast, and it was probably the best french toast I've ever had. Or at least top 3. $14 for unlimited champagne. I think my bill with tip was around $33? It was a good deal. The atmosphere is fun, too. Service was on-point. Christmas decorations were great. We went to Brunch at Madhatter and were very excited about the bottomless mimosa prices. The place was clean and we made a reservation so we were sat right away. The place was relatively empty, cold, and the music was a little too loud. The menu was more extensive than the online version and the prices were good for DC. Unfortunately the wait staff was not attentive and disappeared regularly. My food was cold, my eggs and home fries were unseasoned and I didn't finish my plate because I thought I might be sick. The other members of my party enjoyed their food and the mimosas were good as well. They added a 20% gratuity to our party of 5 bill. Overall we would not go back. Do you remember Madhatter, the little dive bar over on M Street? Well, take just about everything you remember about that Madhatter and move it around the corner, to Connecticut Avenue. Now give it a facelift. Better yet, give it a face transplant. The new Madhatter is now open, and it's a mighty impressive upgrade from the dive bar of yester-year. Welcome to a "dining saloon and drinking house" as they like to call it. And that's exactly what it is. What was originally a real estate office, the new space has dark woods, a high, dome-like ceiling, plenty of sunlight from the restaurant front windows, and splashes of playful color in theme with Alice in Wonderland. The first floor is a large, open dining room - each table adorned with tea cup settings, with a bar that stretches the entire length of the floor. There is an "upside down room" off to the side, is a small room available for private parties which features an entire spread of modeled food hanging from the ceiling. The upstairs dining area overlooks the entire first floor (for you lurkers), with two other side rooms adjacent. I particularly like the larger of the two side rooms upstairs, which manages to capture an essence of a small, intimate bar room, complete with a Deer Hunter arcade game. And to top it off, the food is surprisingly great! When I heard that they had a "full menu" I assumed that meant a full menu of typical bar food fare. I was so wrong. The menu is truly that of a restaurant, not that of bar that just happens so serve food. I walked in for lunch last week and ordered a cobb salad at the bar. To my delight, the preparation, serving size and taste were well above average. The eggs where minced so finely that it was like a dusting of boiled egg under grilled pork belly with avocado, greens, tomato and a whipped bleu cheese dressing on the side. I also sampled a bit of the gorgonzola mussels. The bread that was served alongside was a grilled and a delicious accompaniment to the mussels, skillfully absorbing all of the juices and flavors oh-so-well. After such a great first experience at Madhatter, I'm looking forward to returning to sample more of the menu. Let the madness begin! read more

I got propositioned by a male stripper. I'm now convinced that every red-blooded male has a racial bucket list. I danced my face off to seamless top 40s, after headbopping to superb background tunes. I accidentally fist-pump-punched an emergency exit sign and didn't get kicked out. Solid DJ and crowd, bouncers were quick to clear out social spaces once the beats started spinning. Eric hooked me up with my Pens game and plenty of ice water. Drinks were stronger from him than the girls. Happy hour 4-8. Top hat tasty, not too sweet. Some decent whiskey options. Pulled pork sliders were okay, reasonably sized as an app; had to ask for a fork. Side salad heavy on arugula, carrots julienned long. Stick fries greasy. Lots of purse hooks under the bar. I've not eaten here, but I have been a few times for dancing. This bar-with-a-dance-floor is fine, but nothing special. Let me be honest: If I wanted this experience, I would have stayed in my hometown. I have the same type of place, that I started going to the day I turned 21. This is the deal at The Madhatter: a younger crowd, wearing anything from shorts to club dresses and heels, dancing to top 40 and a little bit of house in a huge open room next a very crowded bar. It is always packed and hot in there. Drinks were decent; a Tanqueray & tonic is $7, so the price is not outrageous. I mean, it is OK, and I probably would not veto the choice, but I think there are better dance experiences to be had. read more

I have to start by saying that I LOVE the theme of this restaurant! I love how everything is so Alice in Wonderland! From the images on the wall, to the restaurant's business cards...it's perfect! We started with a round of drinks (don't kill me because I can't remember the name) that were a mix of Gin, mint and lime...they were DELICIOUS and very REFRESHING! *PICS* We were looking for something different to do, Sunday Brunch-wise, so we decided on Madhatter. Good choice! (Of course, because I picked it.) Me: I kept it light. Raisin French Toast with sausage. The vanilla batter is so sweet that you really don't need much butter or syrup. He: The Hangover Helper - it's a mish-mash of breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's huge cuts of crisp (yes, even the fat!) salty bacon crumbled onto fluffy scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese mixed in with well-seasoned home fries all ontop of a sausage gravy-covered flaky kinda sweet biscuit. Oh. MYGOD! Anywho. Our waiter was a dream. I overheard him tell another table that he recently completed training. Had I not known any better, I would've sworn he was a vet. This is the place to be for brunch. We had a large group of 30 people, so we had to make a reservation and they sat us in an area with our own room. Since the party was so large we kept having to ask for more champagne and orange juice. It was also very hard getting water, I had to ask a few times for our first glass of water, and again for more water. So the service was sub par, but then again, we were a large group. Great music if you like hip hop and r and b and some great throwbacks. This is the kind of spot that gets packed at night full of drunk peoples partying. So didn't expect much. But I'd go back for brunch. I was pleasantly surprised. It isnt a super fancy spot, i would say it is pretty casual restaurant environment, but me and my friends always dress up for brunch anyway and i noticed other people were dressed nicely too. Checked this place out based on some recommendations for brunch in the DC area. The bar service was horrific and I'm confident it was because I was a black male. I had to move from the end of the bar to the middle of the bar just to get some semi service. However, later that weekend when walking by they turned the Madhatter into a dance club. All the tables were moved out and the space became a giant dance floor. Review is for happy hour on a Friday in the summer. Super chill atmosphere. From 4pm-8pm great drink specials which included $4 frozen margheritas which were mango and delicious. I think they also had pina coladas for the same price. $3 well drinks and $5 appetizers. Nachos were really good, but you need to add $2 for pork or chicken during happy hour. The Madhatter was a bright spot on my trip to DC! The restaurant is located in a great part of town. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by a very friendly attendant. We were shown to a table that gave us penalty of elbow room. The interior was decorated very nicely for the season. Our wait staff could not have been nicer! The food was very reasonably priced and cooked perfectly. The tea was fantastic! I have eaten at restaurants three times a day for the last week in DC, and the Madhatter has been the best!! If you are in DC I highly recommend that you stop by and check them out! It's not a super fancy place, which is great, as I had my fill of those kinds of places this week. I was a little disappointed with how minimal the decor was, though. I guess I just expected more, based off of the description. The food was ok. Looked at the menu online. It had alot of choices and something for everyone so we gave it a try. There was a weird smell going in. More like a bar smell than a restaurant smell. The decor was outdated and the place looked like it needed a good cleaning. We did stay for dinner though. The service was excellent as was the food. My daughter had the lobster ravioli and loved it. I thought the Short rib Mac n cheese was great and my husband got the fajitas which he really liked. I don't think I would return just because there are so many other places to check out in DC. We had reservations (have to sign a contract) to celebrate a birthday (party of 10). We found parking in a parking garage around the corner ($10). Note: They will only seat you when the whole party is present and you have 10 minutes after your time for the party to arrive. It is a party place...music playing and people dancing. The menu was $30 no matter what you got and unlimited mimosas. Food was pretty good...it took a little while to come out. They have a full bar with seating and seating up and downstairs. The bathrooms are very, very small (3 people very little room to move around). I totally enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I will go back again. read more
