We went to Madison primarily for the entertainment -- a singer who sang a variety of songs. The restaurant is interesting -- kind of both indoors and outdoors at the same time. There is a ceiling, but it is also open at both the front and back at the restaurant. The food is largely Italian. I had the gnocchi, which is something that I don't always like. This was very good! My dad liked the ravioli Rossini, and my sister enjoyed the chicken piccata. But, the food seemed to come out a little too fast -- as if they had it all ready & just warmed it up. I don't think we waited even 10 minutes. And, they did not serve bread. We asked for some, and they brought us a few small pieces of toast -- and charged for it. And also surprising and disappointing was that they didn't serve coffee at all. Very strange. Still, it was pretty good, albeit expensive (as most San Diego restaurants seem to be).
Had dinner here for Valentine's day. They had a prix-fixe menu for the evening--$99/person. They also offered wine pairings for an extra charge, but I don't drink so we opted out. I would say that the prix-fixe menu and price paired together get a solid 4. Out of everything I tried, my favorite was the portobello (mushroom) "fries." Nothing else really stood out as special. Cute ambiance and good service, will have to try their regular menu some time.
This place is so cute! The vibes are cozy and modern. We were only there for drinks this time but would definitely come back to try the food. We also came during their happy hour from 5-6. We got the motorbike and the heavyset honeybee. The motorbike comes with tequila, watermelon, aperol, ginger and lime but I could only really taste the watermelon and tequila. Refreshing but a little underwhelming. The honeybee was delicious though. It was sweet but also complex. Service was super friendly and welcoming. I would definitely come back!
My parner and I went here during happy hour and were able to get seat the bar immediately. (Happy hour is only available at the bar or patio). We lived the vibe of the place! Also on certain days they have live jazz music which is really cool. Service was really good! Our bartender Jenny was amazing. We got the Motor Bike and Heavyset HoneyBee. I preferred the HoneyBee over the Motor Bike but I'm a sucker for honey lol Overall will definitely come back to try the food and live jazz music.
My friends and I came here for one of my friend's birthdays. We all got different drinks and food and tried each others. The drinks are strong. One of my friends and I shared the greek fries and gnocchi. The tahini sauce for the fried was just ok. I wish it was tzatziki instead. The gnocchi was nice and light, not too heavy even though it's a cream based sauce. I tried my friend's Mediterranean Milanese and the chicken was nice and crispy. The ravioli Rossini sauce was very rich and tasty. We told our server it was one of my friend's birthday and they brought us a chocolate marquise cake. Everything tasted delicious and service was great. A little pricy but nice for special occasions!
Before I describe my experience, I need to preface that the food was excellent, the location and ambiance was amazing! The staff was so wonderful!!! And everyone needs to come here! We were celebrating our daughter's graduation and they accommodated a large party(we called to book the table, nicest and most accommodating person ever) When we arrived everything was ready for us and was gorgeous. But we didn't realize that they had live music. So it was a little louder than we had anticipated. So if this is not your jam, check out their schedule. So we asked if there was any way to move further away from the music and they so quickly moved all 16 of us and made it so wonderful. The food came so quickly and we had the most amazing time. You will not be disappointed! Get the ravioli and the gnocchi!!!
I truly hate bashing a restaurant and even my wife the eternal optimist didn't have much positive to say. I don't mean to be hyperbolic but I wanted to ask the cooks to come and try this food because it wasn't evenly remotely close to restaurant quality. The meatballs were about the size of a ping pong ball and there were 5 for $20. I've seen plenty of similar places with 2-3 baseball sized meatballs for $15 so don't understand the need to be chintzy. The meatballs had a very odd texture almost like the meat had been squished when mixed if they were made in house. They also lacked any flavor. As far as the potatoes they looked great but had little seasoning. They had a sprinkle of finishing salt but that's about it. The disheartening feeling of biting into an unseasoned fluffy potato. The French fries were your standard frozen and fried fries which were fine but nothing special. For $4 with the sliders they were fine. The sliders similar to everything else were just bland. Again the hesitation to use enough salt and even a little pepper. Lastly, I ordered a soda and it was $6. I get rent and overhead cost money but come on. On top of the $6 the server didn't refill my soda once. She came to the table twice after taking our order. Once to check on us and once at the end. It was the bare minimum for a server. She didn't offer once to refill my soda or even bring one out with her. Having worked in restaurants for 20 years it is pretty standard for servers to refill water and soda quickly and offer numerous times. $80 for 3 appetizers, a coke, and 2 Happy Hour drinks at $12 a piece. The service was average as well which is unacceptable when the place is basically empty at 5:45 on a Friday. A truly unforgettable experience for my wife's birthday and we will never be back.
This was my second time at Madison, and unfortunately, it'll probably be my last. The first time I went with my best friend, and it was just okay -- good service, but the flies were pretty annoying. I decided to give it another chance, this time with a group of seven of us, and sadly, the same fly problem continued. The service this time was honestly strange. We got our food and drinks fairly quickly, but no utensils. We couldn't find our server anywhere, so we had to flag down another staff member just to get forks and knives. Then, when it came time to pay, we waited what felt like forever for someone to come by. Food-wise, it was pretty hit or miss. Some people at the table got salads, others got the breakfast burrito , bowls, classic breakfast -- everything was just fine, nothing memorable. The one standout item was the churro waffle sticks with jalapeño jam -- those were actually really good and the only thing we all agreed on. The space itself is cute -- very aesthetic -- but the flies, the uneven service, and the underwhelming food make it hard to justify another visit.
Absolutely one of our favorite spots. Great for cocktails and dinner or just cocktails and appetizers. My favorite is the crab and corn gnocchi is absolutely to die for not too heavy such amazing flavors. The gin and cucumber cooler cocktail is also so light and fresh literally taste like a spa. I've been here with my parents. I've gone on a date night and as a girls night such a great spot for any occasion. It is a little loud but great atmosphere with a lot of wood very earthy and natural . The service is good. I would say they're a little overbooked that the waitress doesn't come to your table 2 too often but there's also people around that can help you if you need something.
We had reservations at 6:30 and were told that our server will be right with us. The menu is quite small so we were quick to make a decision. There were two servers that we noticed serving tables. A girl whose attention was only in the middle row. Then there was a dude who was attending the most left row and the most right row (ours). Two tables that were seated after us (right in front of us) had their orders taken before us. The dude also refilled their waters then would cut away from our corner table and go back to the most left row. It was infuriating to see them pass our table multiple times. We were so close to leaving after waiting 30 minutes. We flagged down one of the staff members who has been attentive to our water and asked if we can get someone to take our orders. He had a talk with the waiter who looked confused. The dude finally came over and took our order but there was no apology and a clear lack of enthusiasm compared to how he talked to the table on my left. After our orders were taken, the girl from the middle row came over and introduced herself as our waitress. It was confusing. We didn't want to throw in the race card but we couldn't help but notice that we were the only minorities eating there. Were we overlooked because of that or was it was a miscommunication amongst staff members? Idk but we could've had a dessert comped at least. Honestly, the food wasn't even worth the wait. The best thing was the fries which were probably frozen. The chicken was so dry that it took forever to cut and it took an effortful swallow. Sure the vibes were nice but the whole experience was soured by the lack of service initially. We ate our food faster than the wait to get our orders taken. Shout out to the water boys though for making sure our waters were refilled and getting a waiter to finally pay attention to us.
Came here for a quick breakfast/ lunch. I ordered their breakfast burrito and I got to say it was delicious. I order it to go because it was a quick stop. However as we waited we sat outside. As we waited for my food they brought us water, my friends and I drank water and talked so the wait didn't seem long.
This adorable restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was really good. I ordered the Mediterranean Breakfast to go. It was delicious! The salad was fresh and came with a yummy vinaigrette. They did forget to include the pita and avocado initially, but when I went back for the pita, they provided it warm, and it paired perfectly with the hummus. I unfortunately forgot to ask about the avocado, but overall the meal was still great.
Liked it, but didn't love it. My feelings could mostly be attributed to the disgusting swampy weather and the fact that the restaurant is open air with only 2 large overhead fans. I really think they should add some fans to help circulate the air when it's really hot/humid. The servers and wait staff were all super friendly. My water was filler repeatedly, the water guy was ON IT. The food came out incredibly fast, we were done in under an hour. The highlights were definitely the chicken shish kabob plate and the stellar ember (an amazing passionfruit pisco sour). I got the shrimp gnocchi and was a little underwhelmed with the portion size (only 3 shrimp? For a $24.50 entree? I thought standard serving size was 5!) I could see why so many people love this spot but a) it was super hot, b) it was really loud, and c) it made me miss Lei Lounge, so I probably won't come back of my own volition. Really great pisco sour though! Highly recommend that cocktail! read more
We had a sponsored dinner here so we got to try a larger variety of appetizers. The vibes are nice but it can get loud inside. The spot isn't fully enclosed and there are many heaters going to stay warm even with the "indoor" seating (and sometimes too warm if you're near a heater). Our party of 12 was seated outside, which was quieter except for the car traffic on the streets. We ordered the skirt steak, watermelon stack, tuna tartare, and burrata appetizers. Of them, my favorite was the skirt steak. It was inhaled by everyone and the chimichurri sauce was super yummy. I shared the short rib and one of the special menu pastas, which was pappardelle with duck ragu. The short rib was served with a mushroom polenta and flavors were bomb. I'm glad I shared though because it would have been too rich for me to finish alone. The pappardelle was okay. We both thought the pasta itself needed more seasoning and it was a tad too soft. Portion sizes were fair to their prices. Overall the food is alright but what bumped my eating to four stars are the drinks and good service. The staff were very attentive, friendly, and patient with us. And one of the cocktails comes with a tarot reading that was fun entertainment. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails (and mocktails). For dessert, we tried all three options. There were favorites in all of them. Mine was the mascarpone cake. It wasn't too sweet and had strong fruity flavors. We came here the night before thanksgiving and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! The high vaulted ceiling is super cool and they've done a good job of decorating. I highly recommend coming for a few drinks and appetizers, but I feel like the dinner is a bit hit or miss . We tried a bunch of different drinks and our favorite was the jumping cholla (if you like mezcal), the boneyard (very refreshing!) and the honeybee whiskey one. As far as the food, the tuna tartare was delicious so definitely get that for an appetizer. The only entree that was really delicious was the gnocchi. The other dishes were just alright and nothing amazing about any of them. The pork chop was a bit dry but it had a good outer coating. Overall, a good place for appetizers and drinks but I would skip the entrees. read more

The atmosphere was nice, our Server Andrew was great ,the food was good. We had a party of 12 a few order a pitcher of blue green mimosas they didn't like it and asked if they could get something different Andrew was helpful with this however. Another person at our table order another drink when the drink was given the person asked if he could ask them for more considering the 1st glass had been appropriately pour and this glass was way less, the drink server(juan Carlos) snatched the glass up and returned to the bar and then returned with the glass and slammed it on table ,walked off mumbling if you have a problem take it up with your server, the person asked for a manager and was told there was not one on site,our server apologized for the bad server. The drink server was very rude to most everyone at our table,overall our experience was good. read more
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Madison. The space is visibly lovely, service was quick contrary to other reviews. We made reservations and were seated immediately by the nice hostess. Our server was very communicative about when to expect our drinks and food. We also got to see live music as they play Sundays and Tuesday. What we got: - Skirt steak - super tasty, had a good BBQ taste to it - Ceviche - this was so yummy! Seabass was the fish of the day and it did not disappoint. There was crema as well. Tasted so refreshing and fish itself tasted fresh! - Pork chop - I'd pass on this next time. The breading of the pork chop was tasty, but the pork itself was a bit bland for my liking. - Stella Ember (drink) - the best drink I've ever had. Their take on whiskey sour, but make it fruity! The edible passion fruit sparkles were the cherry on top after a sip making the drink a sweet, but also tart treat! - Waffle churros - my boyfriend and I had so much fun with all the toppings. Their habanero jam is so unique and complemented their maple cream cheese so well. This is a must get! read more
I can't believe that I waited this long to make a review! Madison is my favorite brunch place in all of San Diego. I take all of our out to town guests here and we live just a few blocks from Morning Glory. We had friends in town for NYE and we decided to go to dinner here. It was a pre-fixe menu, but the food was soo good! So good I forgot to take photos after the Starters. For brunch - my must haves are Waffle Churro Sticks and the Mediterranean Breakfast or the Paleo Bowl. My husband's go to is the surfer breakfast burrito. The service is also always on point. The atmosphere is chill with a fun vibe. read more

Absolutely love coming here! The food and drinks are delicious! Ambiance is lively yet classy. Service is excellent! We've been there several times and have had Kylie as our server - she's the absolute best! Although you'll be hard pressed to find a server there who is not amazing. Cute little place, smaller and less fancy than we expected. The front is a bar and you enter the restaurant through a covered entryway that's to the right of the of the building. All of our servers were very nice, hostesses at the front weren't very friendly and seemed disinterested. Ordering was easy, food was ok but definitely smaller portions than expected for the price. Our pastas didn't come with anything, we had hoped for a salad or some bread to go with our pasta. We did request some and were brought back 2 tiny very thin pieces. Overall, cool inside design, nice servers but food was meh and pricey, smaller and less upscale than expected. read more
Never seen so many men sporting Man Buns & wearing men short shorts & shoes with no socks in one location, customers & staff, just saying. Any who, this place is real chill with good vibes & good customer service. Adult drinks are good & they come fast once you order them. Now the food, well some is good & some is ok, over all the portions are not that big for the price & the food ain't great enough to make up for the small portions & price. The Cioppino was one of the only items that was big in portions & it taste very good you can actually share it with another person. Sea Bass, good, my favorite item here but the portion was not big & over $30! Shoot I'll go fish for one myself at that price & size. The Ravioli Rossini was good my girl liked it but again portions small & at $25 kind of pricy. The lamb burger I wanted to like but it was a no, it's 50/50 lamb & beef & honestly just make it all beef & don't say it's lamb, I can hardly taste the lamb. Overall 3 stars because the vibe, service & drinks were very good & some of the food was good but pricey with small portions. Would I come back, yeah if friends want to come get some drinks & appetizers but I'll be coming with no man bun & my shorts won't be from Baby Gap. Had a nice birthday dinner here. The menu is interesting and we enjoyed watching all the different dishes being served around us. I'll definitely come back just to try the watermelon tower salad. My friend and I both had the gnocchi which was excellent. The buratta appetizer was good, although I think I prefer my tomatoes cold. The complementary marscapone cake was surprisingly delicious (and a nice touch). Looking forward to returning here. read more
First time coming here for brunch! My friend made reservations and we were seated at the bar booth which was pretty nice. I ordered the G.O.A.T sandwich and it was soooo good! Came with a side of potatos. I also tried the Motor bike cocktail My friend had the paleo bowl and the black magic without alcohol (so much pretty much a juice) I also did a Yelp check in and got a free dessert so I tried the waffle churro sticks. It came with a raspberry jalapeño dip and vanilla bean. Both were very interesting but good! Service was a-little slow but it was pretty busy. Absolutely a 5/5 brunch. The vibes were great, we sat outside and had great music playing the whole time. For food we enjoyed the churros as an app - incredible. And then for my main I got the Mediterranean breakfast and wow was I impressed. The perfectly balanced breakfast leaving me feel satisfied but also not too heavy in the belly. The charcoal activated mimosa (pitcher) was also ON POINT after last night. Cheers to you Madison, well done. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. Love that you are able to make a reservation online. We sat in the bar area. The booths were very comfortable and the music wasn't super loud so you were able to still chat. Great cocktail menu and decent wine list. Some wines are locally made. We both had the Chicken Piccata. Perfect portion size. The lemon mashed potato's were not super lemony which was nice. Service was excellent. Perfect for a date night or even a business meal. read more

This restaurant is just too cute, from the outdoor to the inside, just adorable and well thought! There is not a thing I don't like of the esthetic of this restaurant. The menu is mall but enough. I was disappointed by the stir steak. The chocolate cake was delicious! While I got seated right away, the waiter ignored me for a good 15min, and I had to call for her a few times before she acknowledged my presence. On the expensive side, but overall the party had a nice night. read more

Sunday Latin Jazz: 5 stars for the music; 5 stars for the service, and 4 for the food. The food was good but nothing particularly special. Still, the music and the service are worth returning for; we still need to check out the live jazz on Tuesdays. Irving Flores, the jazz keyboardist, is incredibly talented. Amanda Portela, the vocalist, joins him on the first Sunday of every month, and she presents her smoky, jazzy style in a variety of tunes, not just "traditional" Latin jazz. Unfortunately, their conga player didn't really seem to be on the same page as they, especially in terms of energy and enjoyment in playing. I've included pix of the food, but the music was the highlight of our night. read more

Made reservations here before a concert on sunday evening and i'm so glad I found this place! very cute ambiance and atmosphere. Bartenders were very attentive and friendly. Drinks and food were soooooo good. We enjoyed the happy hour menu and definitely want to return to try more of the menu. read more

I first got to try their brunch menu two years ago which I remember enjoying. Went back for dinner and I was a bit disappointed this time around. The ambience is still divine as expected and they even have live entertainment on a Sunday night. However, the food is mediocre and overpriced. The cocktails were really good but aside from that and the ambience, we didn't get full from the food at all for what they cost. read more

We had a reservation, got there early but had to wait until 5 minutes before our time. The environment was a bit "dark" lighting could have been a little bit brighter. Music was too loud but good song choice (old school hip hop). Our waitress was kind, the churro was the best i've had. I would improve the skirt steak (a bit tough) maybe because it was cut the wrong way. We enjoyed the portobello mushrooms too. read more

Madison is the perfect spot for all occasions - date night, brunch, lunch, a snack, there is something on the menu for all of it. The cocktails are top notch and hit different flavor profiles for everyone. We started with the Brie and the peach mozzarella special. The Brie with toasted bread and habanero apricot jam is the definition of sweet and spicy. The peach mozzarella was a perfect combination of flavors with peaches, mozzarella, croutons and onions. The pork chop was recommended by our server and it was the right choice. A large portion with a perfectly cooked pork chop and lightly fried with a crust providing extra flavor and texture to each bite. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and sat in a balsamic that brought it all together. We'll be back for more food and drinks! read more

I came on a Saturday night for Madison's happy hour and I thought it was not bad! Cocktails were at a fair cost of $11. We also got the sliders and tuna tartare. The tuna tartare was refreshing but was lacking in flavor. The fish also did not taste the freshest, but it was OK. I wouldn't get it again. The sliders were delicious, the meat patty was juicy and pretty thick. However the ranch tasted store bought. The drinks were also just ok, I thought they tasted fine but I have had better elsewhere. We got the Motor Bike, which was pretty refreshing but where was the watermelon flavor?? And we also had the Night Forage, which was a little too sweet, but I did enjoy the sparkling wine in it. I didn't think the flavors in the drinks were very apparent or meshed very well. Overall, the ambiance is super cute and in a cute area of University Heights, food is ok and drinks were ok. One of those places where you go for the ambiance. Service was amazing though! read more

Madison seems to be all the rage these days and I can see why! It's the perfect brunch place. It's large and spacious with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, takes reservations (thank god!), and has a delicious assortment of food and cocktails. My table started with the waffle churro sticks - the waffles themselves were perfectly crispy but fluffy and did in fact taste like churros! I also enjoyed the two dipping sauces, especially the jalapeño jam which was a nice surprise! For my main I had the GOAT breakfast sandwich. Again, it was perfect! It had the right combo of flavors without being weird, all the ingredients were excellent quality, and the egg was perfectly cooked. The Madison breakfast potatoes deserve a special shout out because they aren't your average mushy flavorless breakfast potatoes. Instead they are perfectly crispy, salty, and delicious! The one disappointment I had was with the mango mint mimosa pitcher we shared. Maybe it was just an off batch, but I tasted no mint, it was veryyyy weak on the sparkling wine, and the juice was warm! It was a hot day and I was looking forward to a cold refreshing mimosa so this was a surprise. At any rate, definitely would come back for brunch again and now I'm intrigued about trying dinner too! read more

From the moment you walk up to Madison you already know you're going to enter in such a serene, romantic space. You almost feel like you're in a restaurant in New York City. They have such lovely decor and such a great variety of food and drink options! We ordered a couple of different cocktails, and were all tasty and refreshing. We ordered three different pastas and they were all great! Definitely great for a girls night out, a nice date, or to spend with family and friends! Definitely coming back here soon. read more

Their pork chop dish is outstanding -11/10! It's cooked perfectly, is super juicy, and is in an incredible sauce. The ambiance, service, food, and drinks were all fantastic... we also ordered the gnocci 10, ravioli 9 (great but small), Tuna Tartare 6 (it was our least fave of the group but not necessarily bad), portabella mushrooms 10. All of our drinks were 10s as well as our server (Bella). Churro waffle sticks for dessert are a must! I love going on Tuesday's for jazz night and sitting inside! The prices are a bit steep and some of the portions are on the smaller side. Overall I still love this spot but it feels like a big night out vs. a spot that I would frequent because of the cost. Amazing friend chose this spot for dinner and it was phenomenal. We ordered the skirt steak. the salmon, some drinks and of course the churro desert. The churros were just right. The sauces were a bit confusing. One was even spicy. The venue looks small but it's actually quite nice and much large from the back side of the restaurant. It gives of a feel of an outside barn with a tropical mix. We made a 7pm reservation and we were quickly seated on time. Waiting staff was nice and attentive. It's a bit loud yet intimate for people who are looking for a good date spot. Many couples and birthdays being celebrated around. Loved the fresh flowers on the table touch and the fire lit lighting done once it got a little darker. Parking is a bit scarce so I'd make to get there early to find the best parking around. University Heights restaurants are located within a community of homes so it can take time. Avoid the traffic and Uber or make sure to allow time to find parking. We also loved that it was right next to another bar that was very entertaining and a great place for drinks after dinner just a couple feet away. read more

When is happy hour? I don't see any information on the website.
Hi! Unfortunately we, like most bars, can not afford to provide a happy hour at this time. In addition, our indoor bar where Happy Hour was provided, can not seat guests at this moment. Fingers crossed for 2021. ;)
For happy hour do you have to sit at the bar or can you be seated at the dining tables if you order off their happy hour menu?

There was music playing but the area is super open so we were able to have a conversation!
