This was one of those restaurants that I probably would have walked right past had my nose not staged an intervention. I was actually rushing to another location. At first, the storefront was fairly unassuming, but as I was passing by, a glorious aroma drifted out the front door and practically grabbed me by the shirt collar. (Ok I dont have a shirt collar, but you catch the drift.) Naturally, I did what any responsible foodie would do: stopped in my tracks and immediately checked Yelp. A quick glance revealed a surprisingly extensive menu, and just like that, I gave it a shot! Upon entering, I discovered that while there were plenty of seated customers, orders are placed at the front counter. Nearly everyone seemed to be eating a dosa. When in doubt, follow the crowd. For the uninitiated, a dosa is essentially a giant savory crepe. I stress the word "savory" because my brain saw "crepe" and briefly prepared for Nutella and strawberries, hence- sweet. This is not that kind of party. The dosa arrived with three dipping sauces (see photo). It was delicious, crisp, flavorful, and large enough to be shared with someone else. Seriously, look at that size when you order. Before ordering, I asked the important question: "Is anything spicy?" The answer: "No." And thus I learned an important life lesson that applies to both Indian and Korean restaurants: When they say "not spicy," they mean "not spicy to us." To me, there was definitely a pleasant kick. Not a "call the fire department" level of spice, but enough to remind me that spices were indeed invited to the gathering. The dipping sauces also carried their own little surprise packages of heat, too. Completely manageable, very enjoyable, but let's just say "non-spicy" and I have slightly different definitions. The chicken dosa appeared to be the crowd favorite, and after seeing what everyone else ordered, I already have a growing list for my next visit. The various dosa options looked tempting, the rice dishes caught my attention, and I noticed several sweet offerings that deserve further tries! In fact, I've reached the point where the menu is too extensive for one person. The obvious solution is to return with friends and declare it a group research project. Some restaurants are best experienced family-style, and this definitely feels like one of them. Final verdict: Come hungry, trust your nose, order a dosa, and remember that "not spicy" is a highly negotiable term. Now can someone grab me a cup of water, please. Super delicious dosa with some great dipping sauces to go with it. I loved that they included a lot of filling in the dosa, which can sometimes be lacking when it comes to other dosas in the city. We also ordered the samosas to share, which come with four mini pieces (not the huge samosas that restaurants sometimes give you). Those were super crispy and light but were definitely more street food vibes, and I was hoping for a full size samosa. I was pretty full after my meal, but felt like I could actually eat more. I do think the dosa is a decent portion size, so maybe I was just monstrously hungry, and that's on me. read more

Madaras Dosa serves up an authentic dosa with just about any filling that you can imagine. It's a counter service restaurant, so it's likely a better option for lunch than dinner. When it comes to dosas, I'm a fan! But, I admit the only dosa that I've tried before has been at Hampton Chutney in the Hamptons and in NYC. That's what I thought this place was going to be like. And, it kinda was... but more authentic. I have to be honest that I prefer the Americanized dosas that I get at Hampton, but I liked the Madras one, too. I blame my American taste buds, which prefer the flavors of Hampton Chutney. On this visit, I tried the chicken and cheese dosa, and I added vegetables I was expecting peppers and onions but got chickpeas, but I like chickpeas, so no big deal. The portion size is huge, so you won't go hungry! But I spent a total of $24 on lunch after adding chips... and that total didn't include a drink. That is wayyyy too much to pay for lunch. read more

Only in Karnataka (South India) is jaggery (unrefined traditional sugar) put in sambar. A dosa is dipped in coconut chutney and then in sambar and then eaten. Masala Dosa has not labeled itself as being from Karnataka so why was the sambar sugary sweet? It marred what could have been an enjoyable lunch. One of the line cooks told me that Americans like it sweet. Are we having savory or sweet? Only the chicken samosas here are tasty. read more

Came here with my wife and Gujarati in-laws, who all love Dosa/Idli, and we all left very happy. We got a couple Masala Dosa with podi/gunpowder spice, a corn+cheese dosa, mini idli's and vada pav -- all were very good, funny enough the Masala Dosa may have been the least impressive despite their namesake. The corn&cheese dosa were obviously a very non-traditional take but they really liked it. The vada pav were *very* good, perfectly spiced/fried with crunchy bits, and great chutney to give them flavor. It's counter ordering and they bring it out to you pretty quickly, service is pleasant inside but feels more like a take-out place than a sit-down. Highly recommend if you're in midtown and need a quick Indian dosa or steet food experience! read more

We had a great meal and welcoming service at this dosa spot. It's a bit of a squeeze if you want to eat in, but worth it for enjoying the food hot from the kitchen. I got a masala dosa, and my husband got chicken pulao. We had ordered to eat in, but got to go containers by mistake (hence the photo). Both dishes were delicious and had good portion sizes. My dosa had a lot of filling, which isn't always the case with dosas, and the dosa itself was nice and crispy. The storefront has thoughtful touches, like hand sanitizer and wet wipes on the counter alongside napkins and utensils. And the employees were friendly and kind, with one of them coming to check on how we were enjoying our meal. I would definitely go back. read more

When I walked by this place the other day I freaked and counted down the days to when I could come try. That day is today and this place was fireeeee. I got the Traditional Dosa and added Lamb to it. The flavors were out of this worlddd. There was a great amount of filling too like Id be ripping the dosa and there was so much it would fall out so at the end I had an extra snack lol. The chutneys were great too. The coconut chutney was refreshing, the sambar was delish even on its own just eating it like a stew, and the ginger chutney was out of this world good!!! I wanted more of it. I also tried the Limca drink which was an Indian version of sprite. I actually thought it had more of a lime flavor and a hint of creaminess to it? Change of pace for lunch. The space is generic fast food. My masala dosa was prepared to order and quickly. It was accompanied by 3 sauces- one stew like, one coconut based and a great sweet/sour hot sauce. My dosa was very good. It's more expensive than a couple of slices of pizza or a sandwich. Stopped by on a rainy day and enjoyed a dosa. Although it's a bit pricey, it's not too bad if you're craving something spicy and warm in the area. The workers were all nice and helpful and service was quick. The restaurant is clean and modern. Only thing lacking was that there was no bathroom. It seems more of a quick grab and go place than an actual restaurant and people kept coming in and going so they were busy. The guy at the counter was pleasant and friendly. The space available for sitting and where they took my order was clean. They have a decent selection of items. Both vegetarian and other. You can watch them make your meal, I did not since I had too many bags. I had the vegan dosa with onions and vegan meat. The dosa "pancake" was cooked beautifully the golden brown color was done perfectly. Nice crispy flake. The filling was bland and tasted like no spices or seasoning was added. I did eat all my food since, it was what I broke my fast with. I was hungry. I can say the added sauces helped greatly. The dark red sauce was absolutely delicious. I could have paid for that in a bottle. I would go again maybe, but to try anything else. I wouldn't go out my way to eat there due to the price as well. Found this newly open spot, needed something quick. My friends ordered dosa (chicken and lamb), which they enjoyed but on the pricier side ($16/dosa). I ordered chicken with rice dish, which isn't something I would rave about. The chicken was too salty, it was essentially grounded chicken, more rice than chicken; I was expecting cubed chicken. Overall, the food was decent but overpriced. Would've given a solid 5 if the chicken wasn't mush and the price was cheaper. read more

a pretty decent dosa spot, I liked the sambar and the masala idli fries -- although the sambar could have used more drumsticks (i only got like 1/8th of a piece of one). I had the pleasure of eating here this past Thursday with some very dear friends. I live in New Haven, CT - and we've certainly got some solid Indian food spots but I just have to say: *WOW*. Everything was other-worldly incredible in *every measurable way*. The flavors and textures in everything we had was absolutely divine. We had a nice spread of different things to try but my favorite was the lamb Dosa - I don't think I'll ever enjoy dosas elsewhere the same way after tasting what they're serving up here! The kitchen is open so you can actually watch them prepare everything which is pretty cool! I stumbled upon this place while walking along 6th Ave and decided to pop in. I so wish I could rate this higher but felt the prices were very high for what you got. I think they are still soft launching so I'd love to come back when they are more established to see how it is. Everything I asked for they said they ran out of (it was noon on a Tuesday). No potatoes for Masala Dosa, no gunpowder so they swapped it with the karam (spicy) powder. Each addition is also $2 on top of the base dosa price which is a bit absurd... A great new place! The kind of dosa place I have been wanting. Traditional dosas generously filled served piping hot with excellent sambar, well spiced, authentic and with coconut chutney. Thick flavorful mango lassi was just the right accompaniment. The place is simply furnished, clean, well lit and decorated. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. The sign outside alerted us to their soft opening. I saw little evidence that they were less than ready to open. Just after I came in around 9:30pm, a couple, some young people and a South Asian family walked in. Passersby were checking it out. So it looks like a keeper. And they are open until 3am. read more

It's nice that it's open late but the food isn't good. The dosas are not crispy and the portion of ambar is small. I had the pani puri and it too was not good. The pani was very spicy but didn't have much flavor. It should be sweet and sour. There was onion in this dish and that does not belong in it. The sauces and chutneys were the highlight.. The Dosa is just okay. The pani puri was very lackluster. ( It is a skip) The store has a fun cute vibe. The staff were somewhat friendly but pretty slow for having only 4 customers inside. The staff forgot half of my to go order and I had to remind them. Again, this happened with only 4 people inside the store. The prices are high for the quality of food. I would say skip it and order from an established Indian restaurant. This place opened recently and I've been twice to try it out. So far I love it. It feels like it's a space and a menu that's a labor of love. The staff are very sweet and friendly and the prices are reasonable. I tried one of the sandwiches the first time (can't remember which one). Loved it! So much flavor and you can definitely save half for lunch the next day. The flavors are unique and fresh and delicious. Tried the samosa chaat today and loved it just as much. So many flavors in each bite and a good sized portion. The fresh pomegranate seeds on top are great! Highly recommend coming to check this place out. This is a great addition to the neighborhood since 6th Avenue doesn't have any authentic Indian restaurants. I tried the regular masala dosa which had good flavor. They could make the helping slightly larger for the price. The person taking orders and payment was very pleasant as well. read more

Amazing!! Second time here this week. They are working their kinks out as it's a new location, but the food is so good. Ive had the lamb and onion dosa (yum) and last time i made my own dosa with chicken, cheese, onions and potatoes. So good. Will definitely be back. read more
