This is a South Indian spot located inside Rosewood Mall in Pleasanton. There's a decent-sized seating area, though it has more of a fast-food vibe. We tried the ghee dosa, 12-piece mini idlis with sambar, and the Madras Nalla Karam dosa. The food was delicious! The dosas were crispy, flavorful, and generously sized. Each dosa came with sambar, garlic tomato chutney, coconut chutney, and peanut chutney. The peanut chutney, however, was a bit of a letdown--it was quite salty and bland. The Madras Nalla Karam dosa had a slow-building heat. It didn't taste spicy at first but gradually added a nice punch. I'd definitely go back to try the Guntur karam dosa next time. Solid South Indian eatery next to Ranch 99 off Rosewood Drive in Pleasanton. I stopped by earlier today with a family member. We were seated right away. I ordered a Panneer Burji Dosa ($13.95), while he opted to try the Mega Tiffin, which included Pongal Upma, Idli, Vada and a Sweet ($14.95). The food came quickly - my dosa was thin and crispy and as wide as a ten gallon hat. The Panneer Burji tucked inside was delicious - just wish there was more of it. The Madras Filter Coffee's ($3.95 each) were excellent and reminded me of some of my favorite coffee houses in Matunga (Mumbai) - especially when we added a spoonful of sugar! Those memorable coffees and the fact that they substituted our Sambars for their thick and tasty chutneys (tomato, peanut and coconut) without any fuss takes this review from 3.5 to 4 stars. Wow! The food is fantastic. The sambar was HOT, is not watered down, and it actually has so much flavor that it stands out when mixed with the plain idli. I've enjoyed this sambar more than any other place in the area. I'm hoping my meal here was not a one off and it's consistent. It really tasted homemade. I was craving Medu Vada at 9pm and luckily this place was open until 10 on a Saturday. I went with my family who didn't want to eat. I ordered a Idli Vada for myself but the super nice guy working here brought my kids mini idli with ghee and a sweet. They loved it!! I will be returning frequently, now that I know this place matched my flavor palette. Can't wait to try a dosa next time :). Oh! And service was super fast . The food was good. The staff were great about filling the buffet. The Sambar was probably my most favorite part. It was completely full of the good stuff- drumsticks, potato, carrots (chef's kiss)... I got the buffet, and didn't really expect "service" right? Cause I'm serving myself. I ate while I watched the host dance around my table, encourage other patrons to try more things, ask them if there was anything else he could do, poured water for a table, and really rolled the red carpet out for the tables with men sitting at them. So... I guess if you want acknowledgement as a patron be a man, or take one with you. My own service was great, even got my own chutney cups from under the serving counter. Even when I visit India the male staff at restaurants speak to me... I don't bite. I can't say that the hospitality will bring me back.. but the Sambar might be worth it. read more

The idli was okay, but both the uttapam and dosa had a bad smell and tasted quite bitter, possibly due to spoiled batter. So, I recently went back for a very late lunch (while getting my vehicle serviced at the dealership next door). I got the curry leaf idly (recommended by a couple of reviewers), and this brought back all the wonderful memories of what real idlis with the podis are like, growing up in Southern India. These were the softest warm idlis with wonderful karvepaku podi - perfect. Service on this visit was fantastic (perhaps also because there was no one else in the restaurant pretty late in the afternoon). They offered the sweet of the day 'hayagreeva' to taste (actually more like a full serving). The warm hayagreeva was a tad too sweet, but perfect in every other way. Asked them to put this permanently on the menu - it was that good. I probably would never order their filter coffee. It doesn't look like filter coffee (nor did it taste like one, in the past), but the rest of it, there wasn't the confusion that I had encountered previously, and am hoping for the consistency to remain. read more

Really disappointed with our recent experience. We put an order in for pick up. The food was ready in about 20 minutes. We were excited to have dosas, only to find both of them were significantly burnt and inedible. The sambar was very spicy and also inedible (after we repeated a few times on the phone to ensure everything is non spicy which they acknowledged). We ended up not being able to eat a majority of the food as even the idli was put in the same container as the sambar and soaked in it. Hopefully it was just an off day. read more

This was a horrible first time experience here at Madras idli Kadai in Pleasanton CA. We ordered for go and while waiting for my food to be prepared I grabbed a "Small cup" half filled of tea that they had in the restaurant. The server charged me $4 for the tea. There was no Signs which indicates that Tea is not free as they are placed in the middle of the room for guests to help themselves. $4 for 3 sips of tea is rip off. They just want to make the money falsely. At all my typical go to Indian restaurant the tea which is in the lobby is free for anyone to help themselves. Second issue is with the food. The food tasted very basic. Matter of fact I think food at home tastes a lot better than what's served here. I have been too many Indian restaurants and so far this is the worst. I am not fond of spicy food and this place definitely serves some spicy dishes. The sambhar and chutney were very spicy for my palate but if you like spicy food, this is the place to go. Set dosa was different from other locations I have tried it at. They were like regular plain dosa. I really liked the flavor of pongal. The Upma was very oily and heavy on sodium (for my taste). The sambhar is a very spice based broth with no signs of lentils which is also different from some of the other authentic locations. Filter coffee was very acidic which is also unusual.
