After a long morning of missed flights due to cruise delays, I decided to just spend the night in Miami. I desired some wine so I stumbled upon this gem. I walked in and sat at the bar. Now mind you I don't speak Spanish. So when given the menu I was ummmmm ok let me put my high school Spanish classes to good use, lol. Me to bartender: Dondé esta el vino rojo (listen, I know... I tried my best here LMAO) The bartender was super patient and kind, he helped me to decipher the menu and pick an excellent wine! I chose the potatoes dish that was really tasty and helped to soak up the wine I was drinking. I really really really wanted this place to live up to the excellent reviews. I now understand the poor reviews this place receives. I started my meal with the gambas ajillo (Shrimp in oil & garlic). They were cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. I also ordered the patas bravos and there were delicious as well. After two amazing appetizers I was super ready to try my main course - the PAELLA! After taking the first bite I frowned as I knew this was some of the most mediocre Paella I've ever had. I don't know how a restaurant could get away with serving paella this ho-hum in an area like this. I almost want to speak to the owner and have him or her sit down with me and sample the paella with me. There's just no way they can think this is what it should taste like. Great local spot for tapas and wine, just as the name suggests. Dropped in here one afternoon to order some tapas. First up was the grilled octopus. Portion size was very nice (especially considering tapas means small plate) and was grilled nicely. Still had that nice chew to it while being able to taste the flavor of the grill. After the octopus I ordered the ham croquettes. Nice crispy outside while the potatoes and ham inside were still moist. Deceived. Completely and utterly deceived. As if it were some feat of magic, Madrid went from being one of my go-to restaurants to a place that I am having difficulty wrapping my head around. I feel as if I have had some sort of sortilege bestowed upon me. Last year, my dear work husband and I were essentially spellbound by this flamenco dancing local, so much so that it took a piece of our hearts. I loved this restaurant so much that I have recommended it time and time again. The food has always been spectacular, the show has been entertaining, the wait staff efficient and welcoming, but this stops now. The last two times I have gone to Madrid, I have been smacked in the face figuratively not literally. The amount of disappointment is so palpable that you feel it in the air. The mere mention of this place makes me cringe. Why you wonder? Because they have deceived me on a financial level. Two visits ago, I noticed that they have an automatic gratuity included regardless of how many persons are in your party. Not only that, but they do the 18% - not even the 15% - they do the 18%. The only good thing is they at least don't do the 20%. I have no problems with tipping the staff; they do an amazing job. What annoys me is that they immediately include it and they already choose your minimum. You have no choice; you are stuck paying it even if you had horrible service, which fortunately has not been the case for me, but I still consider it an underhanded practice. More underhanded still, however, is that nowhere in their menu, and believe me I looked, does it say that they charge you a cover fee for the flamenco show. Nor does the wait staff tell you! I had heard a couple at the table next to me talking about the show charge, but I dismissed it as I have gone to Madrid plenty of times and never been charged for this. Well, guess what? I went on Friday with a reservation (because seriously you need a reservation for weekends at least two weeks in advance) and when I got my bill, I had the show charge. $30.00 that in no way, shape, or form I was told about. Now, I paid it. No problem. I went to the restaurant to enjoy myself, to be merry and eat delicious food with my boyfriend who recently had a major accomplishment in his life that I wanted to celebrate, and well, I thought: what better place than a place that I keep recommending to everyone? Being foodies, it was bound to be a dream come true. In a sense, it was; I have to say in the long scheme of things, we had great meals and we had a good time watching the show. Unfortunately for the near $164.00 I paid, and considering I was not told anything about this, any and all food we had lost its charm, because the only thing I could think about was that I was completely and utterly deceived, and for that, I should have gone to a magic show like Death and Harry Houdini. Last Saturday, I came here with my son & father. We arrived around 7pm & although the outdoor area was mostly empty, we were told that all the main tables were reserved. No worries! We took a seat at one of the high tops & ordered a bottle of red, red wine as we looked through the menu. I chose the "PAN CON TOMATE" & the "GAMBAS AL AJILLO" (my usual tapas go-to), my dad had the "TOSTA DE CRISTAL DE JAMÓN IBÉRICO" & my son had the "PULPO A LA GALLEGA". Our waitress was again Maribelle who speaks beautifully & always offers wonderful suggestions but she also ALWAYS forgets to apply any discounts I mention. Nevertheless, it was a perfect evening to be sitting outside & by 7:30, the place was absolutely packed & had a great energy. Our food arrived & looked as beautiful as (i assume) it tasted. I absolutely do not eat pig & recently gave up octopus (they're so cute & smart, ya'll!) but my food was great & super fresh & authentically "Spanish". Both my son & father were very satisfied. For dessert, we split the Almond Tart with "Turrón" Ice Cream & it was divine. We were having a wonderful time but after we finished our delicious wine, we were ready to leave. We thanked the wonderful staff & made our way out. That's when we discovered the cluster f#*% in the parking lot... Apparently, some animals in our community think its perfectly ok to block cars into parking spaces. There was not 1, not 2, not 3 but FOUR cars parked behind my father blocking him in. On what planet is that ok?!?!? Such a lack of respect, consideration & common decency. I was disgusted & SO furious! I marched back in to the restaurant & told the hostess who genuinely looked sorry. After making a few announcements, some hags came out to move their cars but not before getting a death stare from me. While it technically was not the restaurants fault, I did take 2 stars away because while we were waiting for those class-less idiots to move their cars, I saw plenty of staff in the parking lot not saying a word & got the feeling that this happens often & they don't do anything about it. As an establishment, you should make your customers as comfortable as possible & set some rules that these 3rd world morons need to follow. It almost ruined our entire time having to wait, then argue in the parking lot. I love Spanish tapas and sangria, so when my boyfriend brought me here last night I was super excited and ready to let my taste buds have a party! Let me start by saying that the atmosphere is super romantic. The inside is dim-lit and has live music. We sat on the terrace which was beautifully lit by small Christmas white lights. We started by ordering a tabla that brought manchego cheese, serrano ham, and chorizo BY FAR the yummiest tabla I ever tasted. The meat tasted so fresh! We also ordered the garbanzos fritos and the portion was small but it was delicious, i love the small pieces of chorizos it had inside. I ordered sangria to drink and it was a huge glass but most importantly the sangria tasted great, not to sweet not to dry. For main plates I ordered the Pork Ham and my boyfriend ordered the Paella negra. The plates were very yummy and brought plenty of food. This was really some of the best food we have had in a long time! Though there were some good entree and paella options, we love tapas and this place had some great choices. So we chose the Spanish tortilla, patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), chistorra flambeada (spicy sausages on fire), garlic shrimp, and a few other items. We probably ordered too many tapas, but they were all very good. Our favorite was definitely the sausages. We thought that "on fire" simply meant spicy; however, they actually serve them flaming. Not only was it a great show, but they were delicious! The atmosphere was great. We were there early and it was busy, but not crowded. We understand that there was to be flamenco later in the evening and they had reservations for all tables. Service was outstanding in every way. Went with a Groupon gift we received. Upon showing it, we were immediately told our Groupon was limited to $51. This $51 limit was nowhere on the terms of use. The server stuck to it and showed us the available deal, which shows a crossed out "$51" next to the actual price of the Groupon ($29), with no explanation of what it means. We were told we could not stay for the flamenco show. So right off the bat, we were uncomfortable. We felt we were not treated as other "fully paying" customers. A little bit of bread before the meal (not enough) and both of us ordered sangria. My husband (a Spaniard) had the individual paella. Portion was good but taste was sub-par. We've had much better elsewhere. I ordered the lubina a la plancha con verduras, or seabass with grilled veggies. Expected a variety of veggies but only contained eggplant and something else I can't even remember. The fish was a bit dry and portion was small for the price ($24). Desserts (crema catalana and tarta de santiago) were delicious. Despite having had dessert, I left hungry and with the sense that I won't be back, not even for the show, which costs extra but doesn't say so anywhere on the menu. In the end, we paid $30 in addition to our Groupon without having ordered appetizers, for an unexciting meal. Another sore point: 18% gratuity automatically included in check. The restaurant has a nice vibe. We sat in the outside. It was cool so it was nice. The appetizers we had were really good. We had the morcilla, croquetas de jamón and the pincho de tortilla. They were delicious . For entree we ordered the paella. We ordered the secreto ibérico and the paella marisco. The secret for the ibérico was it needed more meat. But both paella's had very good flavor. The service was slow but it was very busy and it's was a Saturday at 7:30pm. They have a show at 9. We got to hear a little bit of it. I have been a customer of this place since it opened in 2014, today I came after 9 months to find a starving one-page menu which, instantly reading it, I realized that several dishes had been removed. The chef is new and I don't doubt his skills but the fried chickpeas were pathetic in color, flavor and quantity, it was just something without any seasoning and hard peas swimming in a pale, tasteless broth. I was told they are changing the menu, I think they should also consider the chef's recipe and how the dish should be cooked.My review is based solely on the quality of a food which it used to be delicious.The service was pleasant and the waiter very attentive. The music was too loud, don't get me wrong, I adore the music from Spain but when the decibels are too high it changed from pleasant to annoying.
