The pudding is a combination of bananas, vanilla creme batter, and yellow cake. My first spoonful was sugary sweet~was not able to taste anything else from that bite aside from it being overpoweringly sweet. The few chunks of bananas tasted good and lessen any of the sugar from the rest of the cup. I love this place. Line is always long as ever unless you catch it early morning. Larger size puddings are usually available but smalls are not later in the day so be prepared. Pudding is consistent, i've had cakes, and cupcakes, tried drink that wasn't great but could've been an off day. The decor is beautiful and inviting and consistent with other locations. Staff is nice and they do a lot because many people are new and buying a lil of everything and they are patient. They also have a checkin in point system for rewards. I feel like they were really popular in the mid 2000s and 2010s, and because they became somewhat etched in popular culture, I have known of them for a while. However, their two signature items - cupcakes and banana pudding - are not at the top of my list favorite desserts so I never made it my intention to try them out. This specific Magnolia is located on the Dining Concourse of GCT amongst several other eateries. They had a good selection of bakes, but my eyes immediately went to the cake slices. A mountain of them in different varieties right when you enter the queue. I decided to get a slice of their confetti cake, and since I was there I picked up two cookies - chocolate chunk and oatmeal. The cake was dry - I mean it looked good but yeah, super dry. The cookies were better, but nothing too outstanding. Perhaps their other bakes are better, but I was not impressed with what I had. Service was good, I was taken care of promptly; they have a good system in place and before I knew it I was on my way. Overall, I wasn't impressed with Magnolia. Ordered a vanilla birthday cake, a dozen mini chocolate cupcakes, and a large banana pudding for pickup a week ahead of time. Online ordering was easy and packed well, pickup in the terminal was slow (confused employees not knowing where online orders were kept or how to determine what was ordered) and technically incorrect (provided full sized cupcakes instead of mini - a big upgrade if edible). Cake and cupcake prices were inexpensive for the city. Unfortunately the cake and cupcakes were inedible but made for nice photos. The frosting on both was rock hard even after allowing everything to come to temperature. The cake, both chocolate and vanilla were dry as bone and fell apart immediately. After one day in proper storage all pieces of the cake and cupcake were brick hard. The banana pudding was the star of the show and got some in the group hooked on banana pudding as a concept, but none of us would go back to a magnolias. The price was nearly $10 for a pint size (large), for a little pudding, soggy wafers, and bananas.. flavor was there though. The location is beautiful and you can't get more convenient. The inedibility for someone who will eat all cake including bad cake completely turned me off, 10 of 12 cupcakes and greater than 75% of the cake was thrown away. Before I got to see the actual sizes, I ordered a small. Don't bother. When I saw the sizes closer to the register, I immediately upgraded to a medium. A small is literally a bite. Is it good? Yes. I would rate it a 8/10. It's light and fluffy, almost like a mousse with great banana and vanilla wafer flavor. However, nothing beats good southern style homemade banana pudding with the thicker consistency (to me), so I don't think it's something to go crazy over but definitely good. My visit to the Magnolia Bakery in the basement of Grand Central was a simple affair and restored my confidence in Magnolia Bakery. I have been here before with inconsistent experiences, but this Memorial Day morning, they had fresh peanut butter cookies right out of the oven. A half dozen, thank you very much and a couple of the oatmeal raisin cookies. The oatmeal raisin cookies are good, very good. Nothing shocking or incredible, just good. They have that slightly raw dough leaning with the raisins and oats for which your palate is looking. Their peanut butter cookies are something altogether different. They are so good and not over baked. They retain their raw doughieness to give a soft baked texture. The peanuts are quite evident and there is a sweetness that becomes elevated with a slightly detectable salt that sets it off. Pro Tip: take two peanut butter cookies over to Van Leeuwen (after a nice meal at Melba's), all in the basement of Grand Central, and add them to the vanilla or perhaps even chocolate ice cream.
