I used to use Magnolia years ago -- probably 20 years by now. The person who they sent was very good, so good that he left them for better opportunities and eventually started his own company. I continued using them for a while for my HVAC work, despite concerns about the competence of the techs they sent, and pricing. The final straw was when they sent a tech named Antenna (sic). He decided my outside AC unit needed the cooling fins cleaned by being sprayed with a cleaning solution and then the solution washed off. He then charged me $140 to spray the AC cooling fins with cleaning solution, and using my own hose to wash off the solution. I subsequently bought the same solution to use to clean the cooling fins on a small chiller. The solution was about $20 a gallon. Antenna had used about a fifth of a gallon of the solution plus my own hose and water and charged me $140 dollars. It reminded me of the old term, "highway robbery." Bye, bye Magnolia. read more

They no longer provide residential emergency service, even when you have a service contract, and your air conditioning has died, and your house is 87 degrees inside. After the response from Magnolia, I just wanted to update that District Plumbing came out and fixed the issue in approximately 60 seconds (maybe less than that) and charged me half the price as Magnolia, which didn't fix the toilet and damaged my toilet by scratching it. The woman from Magnolia had NO idea what she was doing. After 20 minutes of scratching up my toilet and making it worse, she said she had given up and that I needed to pay $350. I said I wasn't going to pay because she hadn't fixed my toilet and had made things worse. She said she couldn't fix my toilet. I didn't ask her to leave. She said she couldn't fix my toilet and asked me for my credit card. I said I wasn't paying for a toilet that was broken and she had only made it worse. At that point, she said "okay" and left. Then she realized she forgot all her equipment at my house. So she came back a couple minutes later and I gave it to her. They showed up at a random time that we hadn't scheduled, so I wasn't home. My wife let him in and he claims he replaced the core, but when I got home the system still wasn't working. Mind you, I only did this replacement because the tech told me that it was what I needed to do to get my system to work. So when I called to see why it wasn't working, they said they'd have to charge me to come out if it was an issue that existed before his work, even though I only had the work done because he said it would fix it. I've been trying to have Magnolia out to provide maintenance on my heater since early October. Magnolia has canceled my HVAC appointment THREE times. Two of those times it was in the middle of the appointment, meaning, I'd already taken the time from work to be at home and waiting for them. So we'll be without heat during this cold front as we try to get on the books for a different servicing company. I had been using Magnolia for 10 years, but their service has tanked in the last few years. This became especially noticeable after we bought the maintenance plan last year (maybe they thought we were locked in and so they didn't need to give us quality service anymore). I've used Magnolia many times over the years. they are more expensive than other companies, but I was willing to pay more for good, reliable work. I'm sad to say that is no longer the case. I paid $189 to have them check a frozen pipe. their tech implied there was nothing they could do, and when i pushed, he said they could open a hole in the wall and install a heating strip for $1200. that seemed expensive and like an inadequate solution. i got a second opinion and that plumber found a burst pipe, which he replaced for half what Magnolia was going to charge for installing a $35 solution from Home Depot. the Magnolia tech didn't even open the access panels to check the pipes. what exactly was i paying $189 for? read more

I am not writing on the quality of Magnolia's service but more so their prices. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We have a normal plumber we use and he was booked and so in a pinch we called Magnolia.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They quoted $600 for snaking a bathtub. I am more than happy to make sure I pay a fair price for service, but that is simply insane. Furthermore - when we called, we knew we needed a bathtub snaked - they would not give a quote over the phone (I understand that they don't want to commit to a price before seeing a job) but it would have been nice to understand that a snake job would be "no less than $500" so I could have moved on. But now I was stuck with a $75 service fee and a delay in getting my problem fixed. I don't recommend doing business with Magnolia - there are other reasonably priced plumbers in the area if you can wait. read more

Jeremy from Magnolia came to the house, assessed the situation, and made plans to repair the plumbing once the mitigation company had exposed the walls. Called them for an urgent gas leak inspection / repair. For the initial inspection, no problem - they scheduled someone to come out and investigate within a day. Meh. I don't currently have issues but I signed up for the platinum HVAC plan for maintenance reasons and the fact that it includes a coil cleaning. The person they sent out seemed surprised by the coil cleaning request but ended up hosing down the outside unit, which I could have done. They did do all the measurements and documented my system as fair. My system seems a little louder than it used to be. Headline first: Magnolia saved me over $10k with their expertise and follow-through. I know a lot of reviews tend toward the negative on here, but my experience was exemplary. Longer version: Another company diagnosed an apparent crack in my gas furnace. Surprising and terrible, given it's only seven years old with years to go on its expected life span. Bottom line, the unit is no longer safe and has to be replaced, I was told by an experienced technician. Estimated cost, $10-12k. I called Magnolia for their estimate for replacement. This is the point where they quote a price for a sale, and not a cheap one. But when Sam the estimator (a former high-level technician) looked over the furnace, he instead offered the strong suspicion, based on his expertise, that the unit is not cracked, working fine, and needn't be replaced. The next day he sent a technician, who put a camera down the furnace and confirmed it directly. The crack is not in a dangerous place, and the unit is in good working order. All this did was confirm that I DON'T need to buy something expensive from them. That's professionalism and good service. They saved me thousands and gained nothing in return except a $109 visit fee and this review. I plan to use them again. read more

We discovered our gas water heater wasn't venting correctly, almost at all, once it was turned back on after some gas main work. Being an incredible hazard to our family, we left the gas off and began contacting companies to assist. With a late afternoon call, Magnolia quickly scheduled us for early the next day and Darrick and Rebeca arrived at the top of the scheduled block. They were polite, friendly, and very helpful in ensuring we understood the issues and solutions present. In addition to the gas water heater, they also inspected the other plumbing fixtures in our house to check for any issues and gave a few recommendations. For the heater, they recommended a new water heater (ours was a year out of warranty), as well as fixing a few of the lingering issues we've had since we bought the place. The cost felt very reasonable to us considering it was a water heater upgrade, repiping, a new chimney liner, and a new pressure valve for our home ($6400 in total). It knocked off about 6 line items we've had lingering and it felt great to get them all resolved in a single trip. They finished the water heater the day they came, and the chimney liner folks came out the next morning to finish the job. I'm super pleased with the team we worked with! read more

Short Version: If you need a 40-foot ladder to access your roof, I would look elsewhere, because they do not reliably keep those appointments. Three of these times were because of staffing errors on their end, resulting in no one being available to come out at the last minute. I finally had another company come do the work. Long Version: This review reflects Magnolia's inability to provide a service that they claim to offer, namely the ability to conduct timely repairs on rooftop AC units via 40-foot ladder. I spent six days trying to get them to come out, and after five reschedules, I gave up. My review therefore does not reflect the quality of their work, which I have not experienced. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Getting them to actually show up was like pulling teeth, and resulted in an 80 degree residence for nearly a week.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For those interested in full details - [[HIGHLIGHT]]Wednesday: My AC stops blowing cold air. Due to thunderstorms, they rescheduled for Friday. Absolutely fine. Friday: They called early in the morning, rescheduling due to thunderstorms. Again, I don't have an issue with this as it was clearly a safety issue. They promised to come out on Saturday between 12 and 5pm. Saturday: Magnolia calls me at 12:30pm. Their technician has gotten stuck on a long call that will last until at least 5pm. They have no one else who will come help me today. They have an "emergency slot" available Sunday night between 6 and 9pm, but it will cost an additional $80 just for them to respond. I asked if they could waive the fee as this was their fourth reschedule, but they said no. I took the next available spot on Monday morning between 8-11am. At this point my residence had been at 80 degrees for four days, and after being rescheduled so many times, I wasn't interested in paying an extra $80 for them to (allegedly) come 12 hours sooner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Monday: Nervous, I call Magnolia at 0730. I confirm with them that they are coming out between 8 and 11am today and that nothing has changed. They say yes, and reassure me that they will be there. At about 0845, they call me to cancel AGAIN.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Despite what they said less than two hours previously, they do not have an apprentice available to be the second person on a ladder team. They will therefore be unable to help me today, but I can reschedule (for the fifth time) for Tuesday from 8-11. At this point, I knew I had no guarantee they would come out on Tuesday, despite the booked appointment. I called CroppMetcalfe, who responded out the same day, fixed my system within an hour, and were lovely Three of Magnolia's five reschedules were due to staffing and scheduling errors on their part. I don't understand the logic behind booking appointments and promising services, but then not ensuring that there will be enough staffing to make those services possible. Update also includes the long, drawn-out conclusion to this interaction. - The business owner responds that "We immediately contacted you to inform you that the parts hadn't been delivered." This is FALSE. Instead, they failed to show up for an appointment, failed to call, and failed to let me know the next day what was going on. I had to call them repeatedly to get a straight answer. - They made no effort to contact FedEx and find out what was happening. They didn't even know that FedEx had marked the package as delivered--I found that out for them. ORGINAL WITH UPDATE: In the middle of a rough situation. Third day with no hot water and no end in sight. I'm a longtime Magnolia customer. In the past I've been perfectly satisifed. And everyone I've dealt with in person or on the phone has been great, or at least tried to be helpful. But there's something else going on behind the scenes, and we can't get through or get any help. - On Tuesday we got a visit regarding no hot water from our tankless heater/boiler combo. But Magnolia sent the wrong person--they knew that the unit was both hot water and heat because I told them so and because *they installed it*, but they did not send an HVAC specialist. So that was the first delay. - Good news was that a helpful technician came out later that day. On tech support with the manufacturer he narrowed the issue down, and the manufactuer promised to ship the part for arrival Wednedsay. We scheduled a 4:00 pm visit to finish the repair. - Wednesday came and went without a call or a visit. - On Thursday morning I called and Magnolia told me the part had not arrived. - I called the manufactuer and got the FedEx number. The part *had* been delivered the day before (past the 4:00 pm window). - Magnolia then said they received the wrong part and they were talking to the manufacturer. - The manufacturer keeps good call records and has no record of a call about the wrong part being sent. Only a call to check on status. Their PO is clearly linked to the correct part. - Magnolia then said they didn't know what was going on, and they'd get back to me. - Thursday close of business. No one from Magnolia has called. Manufacturer says it's too late to reorder the part. So it looks like no hot water over Memorial Day weekend. A week without hot water will put anyone in a bad mood, but I'm still trying to be helpful and hopeful. I just wish someone had the complete picture and cared enough to (a) call me when missing an appointment, and (b) set up a new appointment or at a minimum (c) return my calls. Seriously who's in charge over there? Will post updates if I get any! UPDATE: - The service tech who came out was very pleasant to deal with and has a great work ethic. However, he was not supported by the office and was not extensively trained on the unit he was assigned to work on. He had to spend most of his time on hold with the manufacturer. It took him over eight hours to swap out the part to remedy the problem. Not his fault--Magnolia just didn't prepare him to do this job. - The unit started leaking water an hour after the service tech left. For two days, we lost about 2 gallons an hour. I let Magnolia know right away. They came back two days later and adjusted the pressure to what it needed to be to keep the pressure release valve from pouring water out onto our floor. Again, lack of training on this particular unit. - Even then, I was explaining to Magnolia that although they fixed the hot water to the faucets, the radiators were still not heating up. Before the fix, the radiators got hot, but the faucet water didn't. After the fix, the situation was reversed. Magnolia told me that this was likely a separate repair and that I'd have to pay again for an estimate and a new repair. Sorry, but this is OUTRAGEOUS. The new problem was clearly caused by their repair! - So I took a look inside the unit. The replaced part had not been plugged into the control panel, so of course it wasn't switching to radiator heat! It had no power and no signal! Plugged it in and it went back to normal. Lucky I didn't cough up $$$ for another visit! - All this for the low, low price of $750. - I can't imagine why I'd ever go back to this company. read more

I reached out to them over Memorial Day weekend because my AC stopped producing cold air. They charged a $189 fee just to come out, which was separate from the cost of any services to be provided. The guy evaluated my HVAC and told me I needed a new one. He quoted me $9,400 for a new unit for a 1,025 square-foot condo. That is double what four other HVAC service providers have quoted me. I asked them to do what they could while I investigated my options re: a new system. They charged me $700 to clean the coils and flush a line. Calling that "exorbitant" would be an understatement. I probably could have watched a few YouTube videos and learned to do that myself. Bottom line: the service is fine, and the guy came at the scheduled appointment time. But DO NOT USE THEM unless you are okay with paying through the nose. read more

Good people, lousy experience. I hired Magnolia to replace my rooftop package A/C with a heat pump. On the appointed day, they tore the old unit out, lowered it with a crane, removed the cardboard from the new unit...and realized it wouldn't fit. So I was left without A/C for several weeks as it started to get hot, and they hardly communicated with me. So I walked away from them. I give them two stars---I'll reserve one star for outright criminality, etc. I talked to several people at the company and they all seemed to be trying hard, but the bottom line is that the company blew it. In retrospect, there were warning signs. I had to argue with my rep to persuade him to take me seriously when I said the old thermostat wire only had 3 strands, which would not be enough to support a modern thermostat running a heat pump. When he realized I was right, he apologized and offered me the 10-year warranty for free. That was honorable, but the proposal listed this as a "$380/year value." What it really meant is that I would have to *pay* $380/year for their gold service plan in order to keep the "free" labor warranty in effect: an extra $4000 over 10 years, which looks steep to me for annual service. And it took me several weeks to sign on the dotted line, during which time the rep reminded me more than once that the unit was back-ordered with a ~6-week lead time...and then after I signed the company said they could install in 2 weeks. After the debacle, I learned about a higher-efficiency Bosch unit, so I asked if they could install that instead. The first response was no because they needed to match the dimensions of the old one as well as possible. I pointed out that it had nearly identical dimensions to the Carrier they were favoring. So then the story changed to the Bosch being too expensive. We could have negotiated price at that point, but communication was not forthcoming. The next I heard from the company was, a week later, when they called to tell me it would be a cumulative 3 weeks before they could a install new unit--what new unit they still hadn't consulted me on. I felt vulnerable because our contract largely immunized them from liability: in a dispute, I'd pay their legal costs, and liability was limited to the contract amount. Since they were in egregious violation of the contract--they'd never installed the promised unit and left my family without cooling for weeks--I walked. read more

Spent 15k to install a navien combi boiler earlier this year. My Mother used to be friends with Dominic long while ago via CChurch so she pushed me to use them. Issues with no heat. Magnolia's 24 hour emergency service is included in the Gold Plan. Called at 6 pm last night. Was told nothing was available until 8 am. When I inquired why no one was available sooner, the very disinterested sounding scheduler stated that Magnolia only has one team. Okay. Finally got the tech in here. He pulled the cover off the combi boiler and then said he was going to call Navien. Two hours later and he's still sitting in his truck apparently waiting to hear back. Called Navien and they said they suggest using NSS local and trained repair contractors. They told me magnolia just sell the units. Yikes. From what I understand this issue should involve a failure of the 3 way valve or an issue with the thermostat. I'm so cold and confused right now. Will update review with nice shiny news if this gets fixed already. Update 24 hours later. After I had a meltdown, the HVAC manager sent out a two man team who fixed it after 6 hours. They did a great job and were very professional. It also turns out that what I guessed was wrong was the problem after all. Navien combi boilers have a bad 3 way valve. So I would think twice before buying one. Back to one star again. No heat after all Plus two caps that are meant for the combi boiler sitting on floor in pool of water. The water is from the combi boiler being taken apart to work on the 3 way valve. The water has seeped down into the carpet. My cat got down there and puked nearby, i hope the water wasn't bad or filled with chemicals. It's now 12/22 and on day 3 of not having heat. It's about to get down to a real feel of -2 here. This company is TERRIBLE!! I scheduled work with them twice and they cancelled both times. The first time they called me an hour after their time window started to tell me that they won't be coming because their plumber called in sick. The second time they called to cancel a day before the scheduled appointment because they would be closed due to the holiday. What really made me mad is that I scheduled the 2nd appointment 3 weeks prior only for them to call a day prior to cancel the appointment was unacceptable!! Called Magnolia when our water heater was broken - heard they were a reputable company. The technician came out, looked at our water heater for 20 minutes, and said the we had a parts that were not to code, we needed a completely new water heater (it's only 8 years old), and estimated over $2,000 to just to install it. Aghast, we called another local plumber to get a second opinion and he FIXED our water heater in 5 minutes. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY read more

We had a waste pipe blockage that required an 8 foot excavation immediately outside our house in a very tight space. The team lead by Mike was outstanding. Fantastic! I can't praise Magnolia Plumbing Heating and Cooling enough! We needed a gas line leak replaced so we got 5 estimates. Magnolia's quote was 70% less expensive than the others! The technician, Nelson, was the only one that informed us about a much less costly option ($760) than what the others proposed, which were all over $3000! The others were going to bust up my patio flooring and replace an entire segment of the pipes, leaving me with the cost to replace all the flooring. They claimed that Washington Gas would not pass the inspection if they didn't replace the entire line. Magnolia replaced only the portion that was leaking and did not have to dig up my flooring. The technician was super friendly and easy to talk to, but also very professional. He was not only able to answer all my questions but also provided in-depth explanations and kept me informed of everything he was going to do in advance. In addition to the technician being awesome, my experience communicating with everyone at the company was also great! They sent me texts and called me to keep me well informed of when the technician would be coming. I highly recommend Magnolia and will be using them for all my future needs! read more
