I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I live near Wayne Mahaffey's other place, Bistro Rx, which I like well enough, so I wanted to try his other place. I like both places, but I think they're opposites. At Bistro, the menu items are unique and sometimes intriguing, but they're not always as good as I would expect. At Mahaffey's, everything was perfect, but the options are typical of a pub. So, I've become a bit of a food snob lately. I love me some fried food, but I can't stand it from most places these days. It all tastes like the same stuff that comes frozen in a big plastic bag in a big cardboard box .This place, though, is freaking delicious. We started off with some tasty beers (though, sadly, they ran out of the one I wanted just as she was pouring it). Next we had an order of the fried pickles. They were a little too salty, but otherwise the best fried pickles I've ever had. The spicy ranch served with them definitely seems like it's freshly made. AND I couldn't believe how many come on a plate. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich, which was also great, but the fries served with it were even better. I'll definitely be back to this place! First time checking the place. Went on a Friday night. Super friendly and fast service. Both bartenders were really welcoming. I love craft beer. They had a pretty good selection on draft and a huge bottle selection. We had the Thai Monkey wings. Very meaty. Great flavor with a little spicy kick. We'll definitely go back! read more

This was the starting point for a birthday bar crawl (pub golf) to be specific for my fiance's friend's birthday a few weeks back. Dennis took great care of the whole bar and though it's small, there were several people in there and I think he was the only one definitely the only bartender on a Saturday afternoon. There are a lot of beers on tap and bottle available, including some local brews I hadn't tried. They have a sweet modern Jukebox and a few tables in addition to the maybe 15 seat bar. I don't typically go out in Canton anymore but this place is just off the Square area and a friendly neighborhood watering hole. One of my favorite places in the world. I live in DC but come up here almost every week to see what taps they have up. Amazingly varied selection of draft beers at fantastic prices and great atmosphere - last time I was there, I sat next to two old ladies drinking 3-for-4s. Everyone's in a good mood, and with a ridiculous selection like theirs, why wouldn't they be?! I can't really stress enough how much I appreciate this place existing. This bar gets 4 stars because the food, while good, is still standard bar food- it does come out really hot though which is nice. The beer however is 5 stars. I've been here plenty- it's just taken me a while to review the place. I think they easily have over 100 beers there at any given time. All of the selected beers are delicious and interesting- no Coors/Miller/Bud selections on tap here. If you like beer, this is the place to go. The crowd is older (like, my age) at about 35+. One can become a member of the beer club- you get a club # and they actually track what you've had so you can more easily reach the 100 mark and get your name on a plaque. When you enter in your club #, they'll show you your list as well as providing a link "Show me the beers in stock I haven't had". I like this, especially after a few and you aren't that coherent HH specials always include a variety of great and unusual beers 3 for $5 (I think that is what it is now). The beer menu is organized nicely so you can search for bottle, draft, or cask as well as what type/ regional beer you like best. The beer club and menu is really well done. read more

This review is only for the bar. Came just in time for HH, sat at the bar, and didn't order any food (but I could smell and hear the fryer at the side of the bar). I LOVE their HH special: $6 for a threefur (3 10oz beers from their draft list) They have a solid list. It's not quite as extensive as other spots, but not complaining for the price. Also, it seemed like they had a great bottle list as well. The place was crowded, but my friend was able to snag a spot at the bar. It's loud, as a neighborhood bar should be, but never to the point where we weren't able to hear each other. read more

Snowed in and stir-crazy, I decided to check out Mahaffey's for the Super Bowl. Awesome beer selection and good food. Both customers and bartenders were all friendly. I didn't know anyone when I went in and had a good time. I've been back a couple of times and would recommend the burgers or the wings. The beers change regularly so ask for a printed list if you're overwhelmed. read more

You know, as much as I like the beer selection at this bar I feel like you have to be a regular here to get any real value out of it and to feel fully comfortable. Usually when I go here the bar is packed and service is slow. Food is average bar food, nothing great but not bad either. Any happy hour that offers 3 Drafts for 5 bucks and craft beer selections like Sierra Nevada, Dogfish Head Chicory stout and Yards IPA - enough said! The bar actually peers into their kitchen - this is not a huge place. If like me, you may be partial to this focus on function however and enjoy this place for what it is - great beer selection, happy hour, and friendly service. Ive always wanted to come here but it always felt a little intimidating from the outside, either too bro-y or too many old folks drinking at the bar. After living here for 2 years I finally tried it on a random Sunday. They have this 3 beers for 6$ deal all day every day before 7pm that is pretty legit. They also have the largest beer selection of any bar in this area that I can think of (Canton). I had a hamburger and it was great. The price was excellent only $8. Most places in this area charge $14 for a burger. Very few downsides other than, it is a smaller space than most comparable bars in the area and, as I mentioned, could be intimidating to walk in here if youre not from the area because all the clients seem like longtime locals/loyal customers. read more

We went in around 9:30 on a Monday night to grab some food as this place was in walking distance. We have passed it several times and it always smelled good but we had yet to venture in. We are seriously glad we did, at least for the Monday Happy Hour. You can get 3 10 OZ beers for $6 ("Real" beer too, New Belgium, Full Tilt, etc) not just the local Boh or a Miller Lite. We sat at a table and the bartender quickly came over to give us the menus. We ended up taking part in the $1 sliders and the beer special. Took a bit to get the sliders, but it does mean they were made fresh which was nice. They were around 2 OZ in size and were good, just slightly too well done for my taste (I know places often cook burgers medium well not medium). Overall a solid Monday night HH destination if you want some pub grub and beer. We'll be back. read more

Make sure to ask about the secret menu. The churros are delicious! Join the beer club while you are at it as well!

There are few places tht hook me on the first visit. Mahaffey's is one of those places! Came here for a beer with my boyfriend one night a few months ago, and Alice immediately made us feel like regulars. After taking advantage of the awesome Happy Hour Trio special, she explained the Beer Club to us and we never looked back. There are daily food specials and the menu is well executed American Pub Food, including some of the best Fried Pickles I've ever had. Finally, made it to a Tuesday Steak Night (1st Tues of the month) and was blown away: Huge portion, expertly cooked, and includes a salad. The delicious, discerning, and constantly rotating draft list is not to be missed: 19 draft lines, 1 nitro line, and a cask selection! Get In Here!! read more

3 beers for 5 bones? whaaaattt??? how do they do it? no, seriously. how do they do it? i'm no finance wizard. well, i am, but i can't show you my wand. i guess enough people are drawn in by this killer deal to stay and drink forrealsies the rest of the time. pretty awesome. but everyone already knows about this. beer selection is great. i wouldn't say it was my favorite, but since their taps rotate almost daily, i can't really complain. i'm sure i can walk in tomorrow or next week to my personal favorite combination of taps. gave a cursory glance to their bottle selection and had a flemish red to cap off the ravens' win last monday night, after sucking down 12 halves of beer (my friend and i capitalized on the deal and each had two threefurs. and i made him share so i could try them all.). we'd just eaten when we got there so didn't try anything from the regular menu, but after almost falling down and seizing from the ravens giving up their 21-point lead in the 4th quarter (i love them, but who does that?!) we had to sample one each of the lamb and bison sliders. pretty decent, except the lamb was coated in something sweet. 6-beers-deep me was loath to make an unbiased final judgment, but i still know what i like, and a spiced ground lamb patty with a touch of garlic and rosemary would have suited me better. bison was good, standard grilled patty with onions. atmosphere was very pleasant. rife with ravens fans (woohoo!), very friendly, capable, and knowledgeable staff. sat at the rail for the first bit of the game until some people left and we were able to move to a table. i'm kind of over the hodge-podge, license plates 'n' beer bottles decor so prevalent in this type of neighborhood establishment, but it wasn't abhorrent or distracting, and the ambiance still had that elusive je ne sais quoi, likely due to the excellent staff, outstanding brews, and camaraderie among football fans. verdict? i'll certainly be back. and i definitely want in on that club. read more

I'm in love this the burgers. The man up front is a genius when it comes to temperature and seasoning. I order medium and I get medium. No dry burger for me. Fresh ground beef and formed. The rosemary garlic fries were so good I could smack my momma. The food and the beer is delicious. I've come here twice and both times they've messed up my bill. The first time they gave me the wrong tables bills. The second time they added a beer that I hadn't ordered. Both times they fixed it right away. Disclaimer: writing this as a bar review more so than as a restaurant. Simply put, Mahaffey's is my sort of bar! Comfortable, unpretentious, diverse clientele, and not at all stuffy or scary. A sort of place that makes me feel like I belong-- not a haven for the beautiful people, where you question your fashion sense before you've even sat down; not a dive full of shady dregs, where you're immediately mindful of the safety of your wallet; and not a veritable "locals only" club where you get looked at with that "who are YOU that dares tread upon our turf?!" sort of expression! Gotta love the grill on the left, just as you're walking in, and the smoky atmosphere that results when it gets a-crankin'! If you're someone that's offended or bothered meat-induced and laden smoke, this may not be the sort of place for you! The happy hour special of three 10-ouncers of quality brews for $5 is downright awesome, and it's clear that most who partake of it use the special as a good means for trying out different craft ales and/or microbrews. I only wish that there weren't so many exempted beer selections (denoted in bold on their lists) at times, or alternately that there was some clear surcharge of perhaps a buck more for each of the bolder brews when selected within the three-for special. The food selection is quite limited, but everything I've had to eat there has been at least average to above average and at fair to good prices. Mahaffey's scores extra points as a place that always has a cask ale on tap, which makes it a very solid 5-star selection in my book. read more

Nice mix of older beer snobs (senior alcoholics) and crappy O'Donnell Square castaways (junior alcoholics). I really really want to love this place, but I honestly don't get what everyone thinks is so great about it. I've now visited twice and both times I found the food to be mediocre at best. Tonight, my bf and I ordered a cheeseburger and chicken tenders to share. The burger was just ok. Dry and bland, but edible. It was on a special for $6, which is great, but it definitely wasn't worth rushing back for. The chicken tenders were awful. Over cooked, tough and dry. Like they had been reheated in the microwave, then left to cool, then served. Fries were prepared the same way. Overcooked and served at room temperature. Service was nonexistent. There were no open seats on the first floor, so we sat upstairs. No big deal. We were told that we'd have to place our orders from the bartender downstairs, which was fine too. Eventually, the server brought us our food, but we never saw him again. I ended up going behind the vacant bar to get condiments. I really wish I had better things to say, but after having the same culinary experiences both times I visited, I won't be going back. At least not for the food. read more

The interior of the place needs renovated because it looks and feels like a shack, upstairs was blazing hot and we went downstairs after it emptied out in the evening. The upstairs had window AC units that weren't on (and looked nasty) and the fans on the ceiling gave the room a dingy feel.
