I always get regular polish on my toes and it lasts almost a month even with going to the beach etc but here they chipped within 2 days and I wasn't even at the beach yet. My go to nail technician was on vacation and I needed a fill badly. Thanks for the yelp community. I found Mahalo nail bar. I have seen in passing many times during my venture to Pruneyard. Making an appointment online was super easy. System was very efficient giving me a reminder of my appointment. Interior is very neat and clean, and every chair was full when I arrived. A large selection of polishes! All staff was very friendly, even if they were not the ones personally attending to you. I believe my technician may have been newer what seem to be an owner or definitely a senior technician was giving her instruction. On how payments and checkout were made. She did a wonderful job ! She was extremely gentle, and although she did not rush, everything was done rather quickly. The shaping was perfect and she took her time with the polish to make sure it was perfect. She kept referring to a picture I had shown her on shape . Even though I went in for a rather simple cat eye gel, it looked amazing. My only negative was that I did not leave with the fill that I had wanted, but I purely blame my miscommunication not knowing what gel builder was versus a gel set. I usually just let my regular tech do whatever all I knew it was gel. So I ended up with just gel builder on my regular nails, which were rather long. I had a broken nail by that evening, so going forward ,gel builder on natural nails would be just for a shorter nails not the length that I had. I'm not detracting the any stars or the service because it was impeccable. I blame the lack of communication on my part. I just wanted to throw it out there go knowing what you need! Lol. Exceptional service from Joe, but a very disappointing experience with Vannie. I really want to recognize Joe for providing exceptional service. They/them (Joe) were attentive, patient, professional, and genuinely listened to what I wanted. Joe understands that great service is not just about doing the job, it's about making the customer feel heard, respected, and comfortable. If my entire experience had been with Joe, I would have gladly given 5 stars. Unfortunately, my experience with Vannie was the complete opposite, and this is why I cannot give Mahalo 5 stars. Vannie cut the skin on my toes because she seemed to be rushing, and that is completely unacceptable. No customer should leave a salon with an injury because a technician is trying to move too quickly. Speed and volume should never come before a customer's safety and quality of service. The situation with the color was also extremely frustrating. Joe was actually the one who told Vannie that I wanted a different color, so she was already aware of my preference. Instead of taking the time to properly show me the color swatches and allowing me to choose, Vannie continued insisting on the color she wanted. It felt as though she simply did not want to take the time to go through the available options with me. A technician can absolutely make professional recommendations, and I appreciate expertise and guidance. However, a recommendation is not the same as making the decision for the customer. Technicians should suggest, educate, and explain--but they should always listen to the customer and respect the customer's final choice. To the owners of Mahalo--I'm not certain if it's Will who oversees the business, but please do not sacrifice quality and customer care simply to serve more customers. More customers do not mean more success if those customers leave disappointed, ignored, or injured. I strongly believe every technician should follow this basic principle: suggest, recommend, but always LISTEN! Customers are paying for a service and should feel that their preferences matter. If a customer chooses something different from what the technician recommends, that choice should still be respected. Joe demonstrates exactly what excellent customer service should look like. I hope management recognizes their exceptional work and uses that level of service as the standard for everyone. I had chatted with them through the Yelp app before making an appointment, as I don't like surprises....I was quoted 55 for an Acrylic overlay with Gel polish. I get there only to be talked out of it and have the GelX as 'it's better for my nails '. I asked repeatedly how much and both Joe (nail tech) and the guy at reception said it will be the same price. So I go ahead with their recommendation and as I go to pay it is now 60!... When I question this both Joe and the reception guy said it's more because it's GelX, I told him that's what I asked you in the beginning. I know it's only 5 dollars but I don't like being lied to just to get me in the chair there was absolutely no reason for it... be aware!...fyi one of my nails hasn't even got the clear coat on 1/3 of the nail, felt very rushed and Joe just didn't care. I booked this appointment after looking at their online reviews (yelp) and pricing through their booking portal. It was my daughter's first time getting her nails done for summer, and we had agreed on short acrylics with one or two nails featuring a simple design. I paid a deposit when booking. When we arrived, the nail tech suggested switching to GelX, saying it would be healthier for her nails and the same price. That sounded reasonable, so we agreed. We showed him an inspiration photo for general color and style, but were clear that we only wanted two accent nails with a flower design, which he said would be an extra $15. I had also booked a summer pedicure for myself, but that experience felt rushed and underwhelming. It lasted about 25 minutes when it should have been closer to 40. While my daughter was getting her nails done, the tech ended up putting designs on all of her nails without asking or confirming with me. I was shocked, especially since she's only 13, and nothing was communicated beforehand or during. I was sitting directly across from her. At checkout, her nails came out to $145 even with a cash discount which was completely unexpected. There was no clear pricing displayed in the salon or any breakdown of add-ons, so there was no way to anticipate that total. To make matters worse, by the very next day, several charms had already fallen off and the color had started to fade. 4 days later one nail was already coming off. I also had concerns about cleanliness. I didn't see tools being properly sterilized, the floors weren't being regularly cleaned, and at one point there was a toenail clipping sitting right next to my towel when they placed a fan near me to dry my toe nail polish. TL;DR, 5 stars for Jenny & Ruby, DO NOT ask for Dan. He was so sloppy - it was obvious that he only cared about speed and not quality. Dan did my pedicure and gel. First of all, he left air bubbles on one nail and streak edge on another. After I pointed it out, he fixed them by filing it off but left a little bald spot by accident. I asked later as he was working on another client so Jenny helped him fix it. The two nails Jenny worked on were much smoother and great looking than the rest of my nails. A good amount of the sides were unpainted, and most of the nail edges were rough & uneven. It wasn't too unpresentable so I didn't want to bother Jenny and let it go. Then, I watched my wife get the same flip flop pedicure, only to realize that I got an entire different treatment from Dan. It was my first pedicure so I didn't know a lot. He didn't bother to tell me I was sitting on a massage chair, and he didn't even separate my toes with the tissues. I only learned all this from Ruby's flip flop pedicure treatment on my wife, and it was Ruby who told me to sit in the same chair so I can use the massage to wait for my wife. Later on I got home, I saw that the nail polish application was SO uneven. I would give Dan 0 star if I could, but I really want to highlight the great quality that Jenny & Ruby provided. On the other hand, Jenny did the gel design on my wife - she did a great job! I have been coming back regularly as I previously enjoyed the service but now I will not be returning. I was charged $5 to fix a nail with my refill only having been there three weeks prior. I was not told during the manicure and was surprised to be told it was cost $60. The lack of communication and the fact that I was return customer and not to mention the nail broke a week into my original manicure was disheartening but to be told there's a $5 charge for one finger ridiculous. I really want to love this salon.I do. I came here a couple of years ago, and it's always been fantastic. The ladies are doing a decent job. The salon has gone completely downhill, and it 's absolutely filthy. The box marked "clean", contained dirty instruments, and when she dropped a nail file on the floor she picked it up and put it right back in the box. They reuse all instruments and files on bare nails without any sanitization . I booked a Russian or Dry manicure with builder in a bottle only. BIAB, builder gel. Because they grind down the nail so much after applying the builder gel, she then had to put two coats of color on top. Not what I asked for but I get it, they are in a rush. I had actual photos of my last Russian manicure, and asked for SAME. Ummmmm. She wasn't ready when I arrived, so she started fifteen minutes late. I was the first appointment of the day. I know they have back to back appointments alll day, but rushing through a $70 job is not what I expected. $71.50 becuase I used a debit card. I tipped $10 on top, because I'm not a jerk, and she tried. Pro tip, use a translator on your phone, so you can listen to the conversations that they are having around you. It's usually fun chatter, but it's really REALLY loud . It's very upbeat here, and not relaxing at all. But if that's your vibe, I get it. The edges of my nails were not cleaned and somehow dirt got pushed underneath. The stations have no way to pull air or dust away, so we are all breathing each other's dust. A deep cleaning of the salon is absolutely necessary. The appointments should be longer than forty five minutes in duration. I'm very happy to pay much more for a professional job, if the time is extended and the technicians are given a little more time. A great place for a quick fix. At distance my nails look decent, but up close, it's absolutely not what I expected or paid for. read more
