Based on Yelp reviews, I stopped here on my way from Old Saybrook, CT to Bradley International Airport in Hartford. It's a little hole-in-the-wall type of place, but it was decent. We were seated quickly, which makes sense considering the restaurant was near empty. The decor of the place was exactly what you'd expect for this time of restaurant with its mustard colored walls with green trim. I teetered between a four-star and three-star review and here's why: 1. Initially the service was super slow and it didn't improve with time. Took what seemed like forever to get water and place our order, but I will say that the food came out fairly quickly. The main problem was the server. She took forever, was rarely seen, and seemed distracted even though there were only a couple of people besides us in the restaurant. 2. The food was good. Exactly what you would expect for this type of restaurant, but was still lacking. I ordered the veggie omelet with egg white, rye toast, and home fries. The main problem was the omelet. The egg whites were under-cooked on the inside, but the outside was overcooked. I had to actually cut the omelet with a knife in order to cut through the over-cooked part. The veggies inside seemed sparse, and were cut super tiny, almost like they were frozen vegetables....kind of hard to explain. 3. The bathroom opened into the dining area. It was an older building, so I get it in a way, but to have the toilet open directly into the dining room was rather unappealing. Other than that, the food was good so I leaned toward the four-star review. read more

This breakfast place was great! We were in town overnight/morning so we could go to Six Flags. The hotel we stayed at had the most disappointing breakfast I've ever seen. Then I looked on yelp and like a savior this place stuck out! Great reviews and 4.5 starts didn't let us down. I honestly can't say a bad thing about it. Mahaney's had a VERY friendly staff. Excellent! They had a "local" clientele - good for them! A comfortable eating area and really good chicken salad! I love that it is a local "hole in the wall" place. That's my kind of place! But, the food is typical lunch. Nice sandwich - nothing spectacular - a bag of potato chips and a pickle along with a glass of iced tea. It was good. When I find a good restaurant on business, I go back. This was definitely the case with Mahaney's. This is a quaint and unassuming local brunch/lunch spot. When I had lunch here with three other business travelers, we were blown away by how good the food was and how reasonably priced! Menu is extensive, so you have to be pretty picky if you can't find something on the menu you will like. Our first time here, I got the Roast Beef Melt - it was delicious, but VERY filling. I got seasoned fries on my first visit, but I liked the plain fries better when I ordered them the second time. Absolutely delicious, I ended up searching places near me for breakfast because where I wanted to go had a long wait, so I stumbled across Mahaney's. I am so happy that I did!! It was so good, food came out very quickly and yet everything was fresh. The prices are incredibly affordable!! We literally went 2 days in a row and its taking everything in me to not go back a 3rd day! We had cinnamon sugar french toast, the egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich on a roll, short stack of buttermilk pancakes, eggs and bacon the first day and the same the second day but added home fries and a meat wrap. What can I say, this place is by far my favorite local breakfast/lunch joint. It is a small family run business. Can't beat the atmosphere, relaxing, low-key and very welcoming. You always feel right at home when you walk in the door as you are greeted with a smile. It is nice to support the local mom-and-pop shops as I like to call them. Places that aren't part of an enormous chain. That is exactly what this place is. The owner works 7 days a week, and doesn't take time off to live his life... To him, this restaurant is his life and that is evident when you eat there. The prices are extremely cheap too! It's crazy how much food you get for the price you pay. Great deal for sure. You will walk out feeling full, with money left in your pocket. They have a wide selection of foods to choose from - the menu is surprising long. It's very nice to have options. A few foods worth mentioning, while all are great, are the homemade corn beef hash, the BLT, the crispy chicken wraps, and the fries - the man knows how to cook his fries perfectly! Oh quick tip too, if you ask for a bagel toasted on the grill, it always comes out perfectly! Really, you can't go wrong with anything, and boy if you are looking for a selection of drinks...don't fret. They have practically anything you can think of in the cooler just waiting for you. Well, this place is yummy! This place has been right around the corner from my childhood home and I've never been here. It's a shame too because I've clearly missed out on 20+ years of delicious amazing breakfast food. I love hash so I had to try the homemade hash. It's unique here! This hash is made with corned beef and sweet potatoes! And nutmeg! It's SUPER unique and not like any hash I've had before. As long as you're okay with a little unique, then you should try this hash. My egg (over easy) was cooked perfectly. The potatoes were delicious. The toast was smothered in butter. Can't go wrong. My Dad opted for the saucy omelet (which is a spicy Italian sausage, pepper, cream cheese omelet). It was DELICIOUS and spicy. I'm totally going to go for an omelet next time. This place is awesome. Experiences like this are the reason I'm so happy Yelp and smartphones exist. I was traveling in Hartford this weekend with the family. Only a year ago we would have settled for the terrible continental our hotel offered free of charge. But now we have this wonderful marriage of innovation and technology that led us to the gem that is Mahaney's. Mrs. M is big time pursuer of quality breakfast. She's tried many all over New England, but rarely has found one as good as Mahaney's. My son and myself agreed as well. Mahaney's is a small unassuming locale in an old tiny brick building which they occupy the corner of. The layout is eclectic, as you walk in the front door, the kitchen is located right there along with the cash register. Through an open doorway you walk into the rear of the restaurant and a strangely laid out dining area. We sat in the far back in a little alcove that made it seem nice and private. The decor that various pictures of Ireland and it's culture which my son found to be pretty cool. It all had a nice homey feel to it and was decorated for Christmas which my son loved too. Our waitress was very nice and helpful and added to the charm of the place. As a matter of fact the service was amazing - there were 4 people working at the time we were there and they all stopped by at one point or another to see if we were doing well and enjoying our breakfast. Our waitress made suggestions based upon menu size to offer best option after we made our initial order so we didn't over order food. That was helpful too, another fine touch. The food was great. We ordered two of the specials (I can't recall the exact name) but it came with 2 eggs, 2 choices of meat, home fries, toast, and 2 pancakes or 2 slices of french toast. I opted for bacon & spicy sausage patty along with french toast. Mrs. M choose bacon and sausage links and pancakes. The spicy sausage patty was terrific and packed a nice early morning punch. The french toast was tasty, the rest were great too. Mrs. M raved about the home fries, she said that they were among the best she ever had, I thought they were delicious too! The bill came to a total of 21.61, a complete bargain for having left with full bellies and such a great dining experience. We had a party of 5 this morning and were told 10 minutes as they were clearing a table. A waitress emerges and demands our party and one other that arrived after us, move back to front door so she and other staff can get to the kitchen. We took several steps backward and she barked again "not far enough - keep going". We were all a bit surprised to be exposed to her morning wrath and rant but willfully complied. Making a long story short they sat the other party of three before us. We pointed that out immediately before they were seated and the staff member said he didn't know we were first but he estimated another table would be ready in 25 minutes. Assuming a manager may have been present, we made the kitchen staff aware of what happened as we left for another establishment. They may have decent food but until they understand they are in the hospitality business, I'll take my business to the Gathering Ground when I'm in this area. read more

Stopped in here while passing through the area. It was breakfast time and I was hungry, so I looked Mahaney's up on Yelp to see what the locals felt about this place, and sure enough the reviews were really positive. So I got in, and as you walk in, unless you are looking for it, you might not initially see the dining room in the back of the shop. The front half of the shop has some chips, etc. and their grill / kitchen. So I seat myself in the dining room and loved hearing the locals banter with one another. And places like this, where the tableware (i.e. plates, cups, mugs, etc.), are all different, are usually the best places to try the local flavor -- there are definitely no pretenses going on here. The specials, all handwritten on the slip of paper they hand you provides a great selection to choose from. I honestly had trouble deciding, as everything looked awesome. So I chose the spicy Italian sausage omelet which includes spinach, peppers, onions and provolone (although I substituted for Swiss). The plate comes out with a big omelet, with potatoes, rye toast and of course I was enjoying my coffee. I also ordered a side of bacon as well (I know, I already had the sausage in the omelet). Everything was fresh and very tasty. I generally like my homefries a bit drier, they were spiced nicely and were definitely enjoyable. The bacon (which I was glad I ordered), was a great thick cut variety which you don't find too often these days -- it was cooked up nicely, and had great flavor. Next time I am in the area (possibly with family), they will definitely get another visit from me. I saw the pancakes and I know my kids would enjoy them. read more

I want to give a gracious THANK YOU to Mahaney's for being the most perfect place for us to stop for breakfast on our drive up from NYC to VT for a ski trip. Located about 10 mins off of I-91, it was well worth the drive, rather than hitting up some crappy fast food breakfast. Me and my buddies each got egg sandwiches and they were incredible. So my parents are always game for trying something new, that's basically why i love them. Well that and the eighteen years of care, support, food, and shelter. Those things too. Anyways, I brought my parents here for mothers day because it was a place we haven't tried before and it had such high reviews. I was NOT disappointed. First, the owners were on staff and so super friendly- you can tell this place is their baby, and they love it and all their customers. I have a lot of respect and admiration for that. Mr. Owner came over to our table several times and was extremely talkative and courteous. Second, the service is fast. We walked in the door and were out within an hour. Third (and obviously, most importantly), the food. It was really spectacular. I couldn't help myself and got a single pancake AND an omelet (I know, I'm a spectacular glutton). The pancake was JUST the way it should be, fluffy and cakey. The maple syrup is pure and the butter is soft and pliable (which I think is important to note and I don't feel that restaurants put enough emphasis on this. If I get bread, or something- I don't want this frozen block of butter that tears the thing to shreds when I'm trying to spread it). It was extremely filling. I got an omelet with tomato, red pepper, bacon, and cheese. Oh, the few bites I had were so good. The bacon was crispy, just the way it SHOULD be. When we were leaving, they had carnations for the mothers to take home, which I found so endearing. I love this place, it's one of my new favorite breakfast places (and I am a stickler for breakfast places, always looking for new ones). Yelpers, you did not disappoint me! Loved this place. Went here 3 mornings out of a 5 day visit to the area. Had the exact same thing each time - Western Omelet - and it was probably my favorite meal(s) of the entire trip. Everything tasted fresh, delicious, perfect. Husband liked his french toast, blueberry pancakes and omlets too (not all in the same day). Service is good and friendly. Portions are generous. We drove 20 minutes to this diner to mix things up a bit in our brunch rotation. Usually, I don't understand what all the hype is about. With Maheney's I get it. The place just feels so warm and friendly and cuddly. The food is diner food as expected: filling and cheap. It's just so nice to be here. Our server thanked US for giving her our order. I ordered the Harvest omelet (so many veggies, so little time) and my partner ordered the 'Strami omelet. We shared a raspberry pancake. They made it with REAL RASPBERRIES! It was so good. A wonderful hearty mix of lightly sweetened pancake batter and tart raspberries. Love! I hope to go back and try them all. The pancakes are such a nice touch. There were a glut of customers when we first arrived and so everyone was left waiting for longer than acceptable, but then everything caught up and our water and coffee were refilled throughout the rest of the meal. Our group of three enjoyed breakfast at Mahaney's Sunday morning. The dining room is small, as others have noted, and it was not quite half full at around 10am. Everyone was very friendly, and the service was excellent throughout. I ordered a harvest omelet, which was essentially a traditional veggie omelet with the addition of roasted red peppers and broccoli. It was huge and full of veggies-- I'd recommend it if you're an omelet fan. The home fries were a huge hit with us as well. They were more soft than crispy, which I don't usually prefer, but the flavor was terrific. Two varieties of coffee were offered-- regular and french vanilla-- though I stuck to Diet Coke because I'm an incurable addict. I do wish that Mahaney's had a few menu items in the fruit/yogurt/granola category, because there weren't any "light" options to choose from. However, we'll likely make a return visit, especially because the prices are super reasonable. read more

I've lived in town for almost 10 years, and somehow I hadn't made it to Mahaney's in that time. I'd heard lots of good things about it, though, and this year I've finally been able to try it (although it was take-out, and not dining-in). Mahaney's is located in the Poquonock area of Windsor, which is the northern part of town (going towards Windsor Locks). There is sufficient parking around the restaurant such that you shouldn't have an issue finding parking. The staff is very friendly. When I've ordered take-out, the food was ready on time and the counter staff was nice and efficient in getting me my food. As for the food, that's the best part. The corned beef hash omelet is very good - the hash isn't overly salty and its flavor doesn't overpower the rest of the omelet. There's a good combination of flavors and textures. The home fries are solid as well, although they do pale a bit in comparison to the omelet. The chocolate and blueberry pancakes are quite good as well. Mahaney's offers differing amounts, and in making your choice be aware that the pancakes are big. Thus, unless you have a really big appetite, you may want to get one of the smaller portions. Overall, Mahaney's has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best breakfast spots in the area, and I'll definitely return. read more

I went there for pancakes and eggs. The pancakes are super thick and huge, I wasn't warned about that. They were very dry, I only had a few bites and ate the eggs. When I go up to pay the guy asks if everything was ok, I said the eggs were good. He asked what about the pancakes? I said they were very thick and dry. Instead of "I'm sorry about that is there anything else you want instead" or "I apologize but that's how they come, I'll take half off your bill" NOPE didn't get any of that, just took my money like oh well and cashed me out. I absolutely love this place. I eat here a few times a month and usually order food to go. The employees are all incredibly courteous, go out of their way to greet me and ask how I am doing. I have visited every restaurant in the area and this is by far the friendliest. The food is also wonderful. I highly recommend the melts! This place is INCREDIBLE. My husband had a BLT, and he almost ordered a second 'to-go'. It was perfect. I had eggs, sausage and a pancake. A HUGE pancake, that was the best pancake I've ever had. Plain buttermilk, super fluffy inside and slightly crispy on the outside, ate almost the whole, plate-sized pancake with only syrup. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Due to the increasing popularity of Mahaney's you may have to leave if the wait is long. However, please reconsider stopping back as they serve the best home-made hash and sandwich in Windsor. The food is a good value and everything is as expected from a breakfast and lunch restaurant. I hope they consider hiring another waitress or two for the warm months, and establish outdoor seating. Dining at Mahaney's is like dining with family. It's a small hole in the wall type of place with an Irish theme. Seat yourself and enjoy probably the largest and awesome looking coffee mugs in the area. Yes--big artsy coffee mugs that hold lots of your morning joe so no need to keep asking for that refill. It's not your high-end 'starbucks' atmosphere, but your casual weekend place where the staff will remember you when you come back. Mahaney's has your usual breakfast and lunch food, less the specialities like eggs Benedict unless it's on special. This is a family place and the owner (and cook) greets almost every party as they walk in or out. The waitstaff (family) have been in my experience genuinely happy to serve their guests. I've been going there for a few years and I've seen some servers turn over here and there (or maybe it's just my timing); the core staff has always been consistent. Mahaney's is fairly quiet and relaxing. Generally, you don't have a wait to get a seat and the food out of the kitchen is pretty fast. Be warned, Mahaney's may be closed if your planning on going during a holiday weekend (both sat and sun). The decor has thick green paint with photos of Ireland (and matching placemats that bear the map of Ireland). There's a single unisex bathroom and the place has about....10 or so tables give or take. This is my type of place: great food, awesome service, cozy, and for the love of God awesome, plentiful coffee. No need for "excuse me, can I have some more coffee?" They got your back. You're also dealing with the most competitive prices in the local area (compared to Doms, Windsor 75 Diner, Harvest Cafe (Simsbury), Moes (Hartford), Goldrock). If you want a bigger menu and larger / noisier atmosphere, your typical dinner may be a better choice. Alright, let's talk food. My friends tell me the hash is great (I'm personally not a hash fan) and is fresh and not canned. I love their homefries and eggs are plentiful. The Poquonock special comes with practically two of everything and is quite tasty (this is one we're your friend needs to help out) and you get a good bang for your buck. Eggs are eggs and they'll be what you expect. The homefries are what you'll find unique. They're sweet and most with caramelized onions and I also want to say with a kick of garlic. If to make a point, I sometimes order their homefries to go as a side when I get breakfast sandwiches for take out (who does that? this guy). Anyway, Mahaney's has made it to the top of my coveted "my breakfast place" list and if you're in Windsor, it is certainly a place to visit. read more
