    Friday Dinner Thali
    Richard J.

I adore Maharaja Bhog - it is one of my top five restaurants in Houston. Their all you can eat thali experience is a journey through healthy vegetarian delights that present a complex variety of tastes - all delicious. The service is friendly and the dining room clean. Highly recommend!

I have no words to describe how much I recommend this place. The absolute food coma. Make sure to go sufficiently hungry, as they will keep serving you. The manager is the same person I've seen years ago when I was doing fellowship here. The super soft chapatis, puri, many veg curries, the khichdi and rice, dal bhati churma.. good god. Just heavenly food.

Mediocre taste. The unlimited part of the thali was pretty cool and the service was not bad. The dessert - basoondi was delicious. But very mediocre food for the price. Definitely overpriced and overrated. Also, the quality of food and service deteriorated over the years. And the manager is really rude. The restaurant closes at 3 pm but he was rushing us out and the rest of the tables before we could finish, at 2:40 pm. And the experience is not enjoyable. The whole staff is constantly hurrying you up.

This place is incredible! And also a vegetarian's dream. The food is authentic and so is the experience. You're served thaali style - it's a set menu that everyone gets and it's essentially a served vegetarian buffet for $25/person. Waiters will come around and refill your plate based on what you want. The line outside this place during weekend lunches is pretty crazy, so I'd get there early. They run this place like a machine - you come in, eat, and leave. And the service parallels that. So as long as you come in expecting that, you'll have a great experience! I have friends and family who visit from out of the state just to go to this restaurant!

Maharaja Bhog has consistently been a reason for us to drive from Austin to Houston for some great quality Indian food. I think the experience in Houston for Indian food is so diverse and this place is no exception. Ambiance is great. I love the concept of Thalis and the servers are super generous in service always offering more and more. Certain dishes are standouts, like the basundi and the cutlets but I've noticed that this time a few of the curries are bit oilier than before. I think the dal baati and churma are nice and they have a regular dal and kadhi which are good with the plain rice. However I have to knock off one star because the host stand was really trying to rush us out giving us the check while I was still eating and trying multiple times to clear my plate as well when my husband was in the bathroom. I know there is a rush and want to be mindful of that but it just makes me feel a bit frustrated when the business is looking to turn over my table specifically when they wait on other tables to finish before giving them the bill. Overall I think the experience is good, and would definitely return but would love to come and not be rushed out!

I have been inhaling the delicious vegetarian food every time I drop off stuff at Goodwill behind Mahabharata Bhog during Covid pandemic. They had been operating and never close. Fast forward to 2023! I was grateful that I finally got a chance to eat here. I came here for a friend's birthday. We had lunch $22.99 was well spent. Because of their all you can eat in the format of bringing food to you, instead of get up and walk over to the buffet line. I have consumed enough Indian food, I could literally explain it to my friend as the food placed on our trays. My favorite part of meal was the variety of starches. I can ask as little or much as I want.

Vegetarian thali Time!! They are known for the their thali's so we had to try them! We went after lunch, so it wants too crowded and the service was pretty great! There was just so much food that we couldn't finish it all! Everything was flavorful and there was quite a variety to chose from, but it was a bit mild in terms of spice for my taste. The thali is on the expensive end of $28 per plate, which I thought was a bit excessive. I have had other thali's at other indian restaurants that provide a better quality of food with maybe a few less items and they only cost about $18. Overall, it's a great one time experience, but I'm not sure if we would come here often give the price and the value for what we are getting.

I love Maharaja Bhog! Amazing service, the owner is very friendly and inquires about any dietary restrictions to accommodate. They specialize in the thali which is basically an all you can eat plate where they keep refilling all the items until you're full. Everything was delicious! I recommend coming here for a late lunch (and skipping breakfast) or early dinner so you can actually make the most out of it.

    Is the menue all vegetarian?

    Yes

    Do u have kids thali?

Yes, they do and it's bit cheaper and fewer items. They also get non spicy curries.

Do they post their daily menu somewhere?

    Do they take reservations?

    Is it BYOB?

Really sorry we are not BYOB.

Will be visiting this weekend for the first time w/ husband & two guests. In your experience, when is the best time to go? Our options are Saturday lunch/dinner, or Sunday lunch/dinner. We don't mind a bit of a wait but would prefer less than 20 min.

Thank you for choosing Maharaja Bhog. Your best option would be Sunday Dinner. It’s not as crazy like a Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you. Thanks.

What is the brown flakes? its not in a bowl but on the plate How is suppose to be eaten?…

To add crunch texture to your thali, from what I've understood, since so many have similar texture.

When do they typically serve Aam ras?

I believe they change menu daily. So unsure when.

    Do you allow BYOB?

We are there last night and asked if we could bring in a bottle of wine. They said, "No."

Is it vegan or only vegetarian?

They have options in both vegan, Jain and gluten-free. Since the platter has 20+ items it will include all options. I'm guessing they will skip the non-vegan items when serving you.

Has anyone else had food poisoning from this place; both my mother and I became very ill after eating here because it is not kept clean?

Probably not contaminated food, but QUANTITY of food!!

Do they have gluten free options as well?

Yes, most everything is gluten free. My wife is gluten free and they put a little sign on the table for those bringing the food around to see. They bring a special bread instead of the roti and puri. She can eat about 90 to 95% of the buffet. I… Read more

Do you offer the same thaali during dinner time?

Yes, they offer thali at both lunch and dinner times

    Is this vegetarian only?

You can tell them that you are vegan and they will accommodate. My friend is Vegan and they took the diary stuff out of his plate.

Oh my gosh... the place was absolutely packed! There were people waiting outside. We scanned the QR code, entered our details n waited for about 30 minutes before getting a table. We ordered Chicken Lollipop, Chicken Bihari Kababs, Kali Mirch Chicken Curry, naan, rice and lassi. Everything was fresh, flavorful & absolutely delicious. The Chicken Bihari Kababs n Kali Mirch Chicken Curry were the stars of the meal. Despite the huge crowd the service was quick, organized, and very professional. That's something really appreciated. I've honestly never seen this kind of rush at any restaurant in the Dallas area. The food definitely lives up to the hype and now understand why people are willing to wait just to get in. Later found out their chops are one of the signature dishes, so that's definitely on my list for the next visit. Overall, great food, great service and a great family dining experience. just hope they open a branch in Dallas someday it would be a huge hit!

Pros -There were a lot of vegetarian options that taste good. I actually thought the vegetarian choices tastes better than non-veg. Cons -We went during lunchtime and although we didn't have to wait for a table, it was crowded at the buffet area when getting food, and at times people take a longer time getting food. -The non-veg was a bit disappointing as the taste was a bit bland, especially the curry types which should be bursting with flavors. -They offered a special fish dish but it has bones which I don't prefer. -They did not have my favorite puri when we were there! Their longevity (#1) of a near half century is nothing short of impressive, earning a nostalgic place in the hearts of many Houston diners, a good number of whom trace their first Indian cuisine experiences at this very location. While I do wish their success, it's hard not to point out minor mishaps in different aspects of the overall restaurant experience, which include: :: Awkward stares from the staff as they hover or stand in the middle of the room. It's understandable that they're monitoring to help where needed, but even then I will have to flag them down for water, napkins, or the bill. :: Buffet maintenance. They're semi-quick to replenish, but extremely slow at maintaining the cleanliness. Splatter from the daal makhani, a serving spoon not returned to the same serving tray, or even customers forgetting to close the bins at the dessert station (#2) could all be mitigated by a designated person keeping it tidy. :: Food quality. The tandoori chicken has been dry, the saag paneer could be creamier, and chicken tikka masala has had their bland days. Even the naan can be a bit too dry at times. Thankfully I've fared better with the chana masala and paneer makhani. I would also steer clear of their fruit punch. :: Decor is dark and dated. It still reminds me of a place that is stuck in time, which for most experiences are usually my favorite. The natural lighting during lunch alleviates this slightly, but the dinner hour makes this place feel like eating in an older hotel lobby. The vibes are most definitely challenging. :: Foodflation. Another price hike in the last year brings the buffet price to just under $22. Nice crispy batter, prepared a little differently than you're used to. It's skinless, bone-on chicken that's been filleted off the bone a bit, so instead of a plain drumstick, it's more like a filleted drumstick, with the breast filleted off, with a little bone left on to hold it together. The chicken was super tender and moist and the batter was crunchy. There's a bit of an Indian flavor profile, but not overwhelming -- I was actually hoping for a little more spice, kick, and heat. Still, very good chicken, and I'd try it again. Rice, 3.5/5. Solid side, but nothing spectacular. I've had much better. Garlic naan, $9 -- 3.5/5. Solid, big piece of naan. Would get it again. Service was quick. The food took a little while to come out, mostly because of the fried chicken -- though we ordered that right when we sat down, then ordered the rest about ten minutes later as we looked over the menu. If you've lived in Houston all your life, I highly suggest giving this place a try. It's one of those Houston staples that's been around, and some of the things they do are really good and a little different. That said, from a value perspective I think a place like Aga's outshines them just slightly. I've had many of the same curries at Aga's and find them a touch better, and a slightly better value. In the end, it's a totally fine place for takeout or to sit down and eat give it a try. Would recommend, and would return.

Think cut up chicken thighs in a green curry that almost has a salsa like mouth feel with vegetables. Absolutely decadent. The Steak Tikka. Round of applause. I overheard the owner telling other tables that it's the best steak in Houston. I'll say it's the best steak I've ever had at an Indo-Pak restaurant. The steak was super tender it had that famous Tikka style smokiness. The Butter Chicken. Pretty damn solid. The gravy was silky and perfectly textured. They also use chicken thighs for this, which makes it even better. The Saag Paneer. It was all right, I've had better at other places, but still super solid. The Paneer was fresh and was great on all the various naans we got. For the naan, we just got the garlic and the butter naan. They are absolutely great when they come straight out of the tandoor oven, but I found that they get a little too hard if not eaten quickly. I'm sure they would reheat really well. We also tried the spicy rocket naan and it decent. I would just stick with garlic and butter. The only miss for me was the Mutton Biryani. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid biryani dish, but I've had better that had a little bit more flavor. The mutton was very tender, but the opportunity was making the rice a little bit less clunky. I see a lot of reviews with people hating on things like service or area. Let me just say we had no issues with service. The service was top-notch. We spent $222 with tip across three people. A little pricey but totally worth it.

7.9/10 I recently tried Kumar's for some Indian food and…read morewas pleasantly surprised. I ordered through one of the delivery apps and scored a buy one get one free special, which made the value absolutely worth it. For the amount of food I received, the price was great. They even included bread on the side, which I appreciated and did not expect with the promo. What really stood out to me was how fast everything was. The food was ready within about seven minutes of me placing the order. That kind of efficiency is impressive. They were also very attentive and made sure everything was correct. As for the food itself, it tasted really good. The flavors were solid and satisfying. Is it the best Indian food I have ever had? No. But for the value, speed, and overall experience, it is definitely a place I would order from again. If you are looking for good Indian food at a great price point, especially when they are running specials, this spot is absolutely worth trying.
