I miss this cart. I wish it would come to my town. I would hug it. Alright, it wasn't exactly an epiphany or religious experience, but they serve some solid food. The platters are largeish and the food is good. I had the chicken, it was yummily grilled. The white sauce (whatever it may be) was tasty and everything comes with fries. I have been coming here off and on since I was in elementary school ( I'm 32 more lol). Altho I like the shishkabobs from Frankys better, this cart offers some good stuff. Thanks to yelp, I found this while starved @ Steinway. It looks like any other halal cart, but they do things a little differently. They add eggplant and fries to the dish, which adds in a surprising taste. The meat itself seems like its BBQ - delicious! My only complaint is that the portions are tiny, its not the cheapest one considering the portion size. It's enough to fill you up, of course, but don't expect the generous portions most halal carts offer. Also, get the lamb and chicken mixed for enough meat, the chicken only had like 6-7 pieces of meat I swear. read more

I've been going to Mahmouds for years since it was a small food cart now to see it become a food truck is amazing. The food is really great and prepared pretty quickly. You can even call them ahead of time and place your order for pickup. I'm giving it 4 stars because sometimes the staff can be quite rude unfortunately. LOVE these guys! I generally am not a fan of gyro carts which always make me feel queasy afterwards, but this place really makes a meal out of their gyro platters and it is always oh-so-delicious. Whether it's lamb or chicken (think they have beef too but haven't tried), the meat is always tender and perfectly seasoned. And their falafels are awesome too. The rice is nicely done and you have a healthy brown rice option as well. But the best part, and this is where I think this cart really stands out from the gazillion other gyro carts in NYC is that they add pieces of fried eggplant along with some onion, tomato, bell peppers and freshly made french fries into the platters --- the combination is so freaking delicious! The portions are also big and even though I am full after eating half the platter I usually end up finish the whole damn thing in one go because it is SO good! My only complaint about this place is that they're not open past 9pm. Sometimes even if you go even around 8:45pm they're usually out of falafel which sucks for my vegetarian husband. But we're hooked and hope that this truck stays around...and hopefully extends their business hours! :) read more

The guys are really friendly and the prices are great. Plus the serving size is huge! In my opinion, this is absolutely one of the best halal carts in NYC. They offer a good variety on their menu, and the quality of the meat they serve can't be beat. You'd be hard pressed to find more tender chicken and lamb at any other cart in the city. Their additions of eggplant and french fries are genius, and the varying textures offer great contrast. Everything is so flavorful and well seasoned. And, Mahmoud himself could not be any nicer or any more genuine of a guy. His humble attitude is so endearing! I crave these platters all the time. My family and I have been going to Mahmoud's for awhile now, I didn't realize they had a yelp page and I just have to leave them a review. This place is hands down the best halal food in NYC and it's quality food from a stand (now a truck). The meat pieces are cut into nice chunks whether you get chicken or beef, not the shredded or super minced stuff you get elsewhere. My mom and I love that they add eggplants to their meals, it's nice to have some veggies with the rice and meat. I'm so happy that there are other reviews of this on here! But... only 3? This cart has been a staple of the neighborhood for many years. It's so popular that the dudes who run it have opened a SECOND cart across the street in front of Rite Aid. I first came to know this cart as the place to get RIDICULOUS gyros. In addition to juicy, delicious lamb meat on a warm fluffy pita, they added not only the usual salad of onions, tomatoes and lettuce, but also eggplant and FRENCH FRIES. That's right. Most of these types of places in countries like France and Belgium will include fries as an ornament to a sandwich, but for some stupid reason, this custom hasn't caught on in the states. Except for this cart. After enjoying the occasional gyro (my favorite is to eat it right there at the stand, in front of the furniture store, or maybe sneak it into a movie at the Kaufman Astoria 14 down the street), I expanded to other dishes, like the lamb or chicken on rice platters. Recently I had a falafel which EASILY beat any I've had in the city, including places like Mamoun's or Oasis in Williamsburg. The guys who work at this place are nice and very quick, the prices are dirt cheap, and the food is awesome. What more could you want?? read more

This is the best halal food place you can find in NYC. Halal guys is nothing compared to Mahmouds Corner. The quality of the food is exceptionally delicious. This truck is awesome and definitely has a different flavor compared to most gyros in town. Food is all definitely fresh and love that this is practically the only Gyro truck or cart I've ever seen with the gyro meat enclosed behind a glass case. The staff was friendly and very quick. Chicken over rice ($6.50) is veryyyy good! It's seasoned so well and not dry at all. I wish they did give a little more chicken though. I did catch them while they were setting up for the day so they had just started cooking mounds of raw chicken and gave me 1 stick of chicken kebab instead since that was ready. I'll go later on in the day next time hoping to get more on my plate than just 1 kebab worth! Eggplant is delicious. Be careful for that roasted pepper they put on top though! That's a jalapeño pepper. I didn't know this and took a huge bite and was in serious pain after! Suggestion: give more salad with the rice platters! I only had about 2 pieces of lettuce and 2 pieces of tomato, yet a lot of onions and fries. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer more fresh veges than the fried stuff! read more

I'm a huge fan of food carts in Astoria. There's King of Souvlaki, the best for, well, Souvlaki, and King of Falafel, my favorite halal cart to date. That was until I tried the food here at the 34th Ave cart. I got lamb over yellow rice and a Snapple for $7.50. The lamb was the best I've ever had, hands down. Full of flavor and well-spiced, it hit the spot. And like everyone else says, they include some eggplant and French fries. Those two things you wouldn't expect to work in a platter but they add so much. The fries have that texture and soak up the sauces, the eggplant is just a burst of flavor. Definitely give these guys a try, they make excellent food. read more
