Stumbled upon Mai Lee when my husband and I were super hungry during our furniture shopping trip in Brentwood. Everything in St Louis Galleria was full with 2+ hours wait. Thankfully we went to Mai Lee which I think is one of the best restaurants in town. Mai Lee is from the same people behind Nudo House, the STL ramen bar. We ordered a few things...crab Rangoon, potstickers, egg rolls, the pork and thick rice noodle soup, cold peanut noodles, and beef w broccoli. The crab Rangoon and egg rolls were probably the best I've ever had. Obviously made in house- stuffed full of filling and so tasty. The potstickers were ok. Took doughy for my taste and the prom filling seemed to have a lot of cilantro in it which was overbearing. The pork & rice noodle soup and the cold sesame noodles were my daughters pick- not my cup of tea. The cold noodles had a lot of peanut sauce and I basically tasted cold noodles coated in peanut butter. The soup was different. A basic somewhat flavorless chicken broth, thick rice noodles, with scallions and pieces of thin pork. I didn't love the smell and the gumminess of the noodles was off putting. The beef w broccoli was really good, although, it was full of large onion pieces also. Mai Lee has been on my list of places to go for a while! It's a unique Vietnamese restaurant in Brentwood and is so fun! The menu is super long and a little overwhelming to look over, just because there are so many options! My friend and I split 143 which was the tofu with carrots, bamboo shoots, and broccoli in a Chile lemongrass sauce. All of the dinners come with a big order of rice. Not sure what happened but I've never had a more awful tasting meal from a Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant and I've eaten at Mai Lee several times in my life. I had tried to order online and orders were closed... called to see if they were open and they answered, saying they were too busy for online orders but were taking carryout orders over the phone. Ordered two chicken lo mein, one chicken egg foo young and an order of crab rangoon (to go). The lo mein was downright inedible - had a really strange flavor and was full of oil - like pooling in the corners of the container. I'm not sure if it was because they were so busy.. but what a complete waste of money, both orders went immediately in the trash. Husband had the egg foo young, it was okay ... Great great place. I knew I walked into something great from the backstory of how this restaurant started and then glancing at the menu. The menu is huuuuuuge and everything is just so authentic. They have so many Vietnamese dishes you can choose from and I'm just sad I couldn't eat everything! I tried the classic pho (noodles with beef) and it was really so good. I've had a lot of pho in my lifetime and I'll tell you- the beef here is so tender and juicy. The broth is so well done- it's flavorful but not overbearing and it's clean tasting and doesn't taste like they just threw msg in it. I loved it. And we also had water spinach with garlic. This is my 3rd time here and I did enjoy my food, but judging from what I've ordered so far, it's not craveable. Today I had the Banh Xeo, which I've really liked before and it was still good, but one crepe only had 1 shrimp and the other only 3 shrimp and they were absolutely drowning in bean sprouts. The spring rolls were super fresh and the sauce that it came with complemented them really well. The pho here was definitely better than other Vietnamese places, the broth was so flavorful! I got the Bun Nuong with pork and my mom the bun Tom nuong. Both were delllicious! The pork was grilled just perfect with a subtle smoky flavor. The star of the meal was the iced Vietnamese coffee- easily the best in the city (pricey at $5 compared to other places but totally worth it). Went to mai lee for the first time yesterday on a whim as we were nearby. I am soooo glad I stopped in. We were greeted immediately after walking through the door, asked if we were dining in or taking out. We chose takeout and were given a menu to order at the bar. With the pandemic, it meant so much to be acknowledged and told we could take our time and order when we were ready because so many places, due to no fault of their own, make you feel rushed. We opted for the chinese menu since it was our first time, wanting to ease in, but there are so many different options, from vietnamese to chinese, we will have to come back multiple times (which we are definitely excited to do) to try everything! I don't get the love everyone has for this place. I have tried time and time again, to feel the same love, but I just don't have it. Ian Froeb placed them at #24 on his STL 100 List for 2016. I just find the food to be bland with little flavor. I also, find the service to be less then desirable. I've always sat in the bar area or actually at the bar. The service is basically the same as ordering at a counter restauratnt. They take your order, bring you food and that's it. After listening to the young man working the bar, make fun of professional athletes and local political figures after they left, saying they didn't know how to order or eat Vietnamese food. Love the story. This is the first Vietnamese restaurant in STL. It was originally a Chinese restaurant run by a Vietnamese family and then they slowly incorporated Vietnamese food. There is still a Chinese-American menu, but you come here for the Vietnamese food. It's also an expansive menu. So this is a large restaurant and they only take reservations for groups of 8+ - however if you come during prime dinner on Friday and Saturday, there will be a wait. The bar seating even gets packed! The bar seating area also offer high tops near two TVs. It's updated and modern inside. Pros: 1) The extensive Vietnamese menu beyond Pho. Love this. I particular like the fire hot stone soups. They are big enough to share (even the smaller portions). If you like sweet, sour, and spicy - I would go with a tamarind and lemongrass base one. There are just soo many to choose from. And for a take on extreme comfort in cold weather, I would get the chicken rice porridge, it is delicious 2) Banh Mi - get this as an app to split. I love the chicken one. 3) I had a lot of their stir-frys and bo luc lac - which is like a sizzling beef dish. 4) Love their fresh spring rolls, the hoisan heavy sauce is what makes it for me. If you get the grilled chicken over the shrimp- this will come with a fish-based sauce. I like to generally ask for both! 5) Delivery service! Cons: 1) Parking, but there is a garage 2) Prime dinner time means a wait unless you are lucky by the bar I like this place a lot. I originally thought it wouldn't be as "authentic" because of the diverse clients aka not all Asians like the other Vietnamese restaurants on Olive. There is outside seating. Overall environment was clean and pleasant. Food was great. Ordered vermicelli noodles with shrimp and grilled pork and pho Thai. I was surprised that the beef that came in the pho Thai was very tender and of quality. It was actually really good. Broth was not all that authentic with that deep taste a lot Vietnamese places offer. However, it was still really good. Mai lee is delicious. My rating comes from their Postmates/UberEats takeout preparation. The bags aren't sealed. Hell, they're not even folded. Your good is breathed on by who knows how many people while it waits to be picked up, then sits in the driver's car being breathed on more.
