We have been here a few times before and have found it to be good to great so since they appear to have their act together we will give them 5 stars. What we had. Onion rings, spinach salad, chicken friend chicken with white gravy, mashed potatoes with white gravy, and macaroni and cheese. We also got a Terry Patty Melt medium rare. I was craving chicken fried steak and i got chicken fried steak. There isn't much else to say. The steak was perfectly cooked and the batter was nice and crispy. I love mashed potatoes, so this was like heaven. When I went there wasn't a lot of people around, so I got seated pretty fast near a window. The waiters were very nice and courteous. I was in a hurry and wanted to have a sandwich at this cafe. I work nearby here. They didn't pay any attention to me, despite the fact that I had absolutely no time before the next client. They not only refused to serve me, but also shouted at me and desecrated me for something I did not do when I explained that I was unhappy because they did not pay any attention to me and I was left hungry. They also threatened to call the police. the cook threatened me on the street that I would have problems if I came back, even though I did NOTHING wrong. NOT dear owners, if you are reading this at all, then shove your sandwiches in your ***. Next time we'll see who will have problems, unless you allow me to be treated like that again. The time before last I brought three out of towners there, all from different states, who were here on a motorcycle trip. They all were taken with the place and were not disappointed that Babe's was closed and I picked the Main Street Cafe as an alternative for the welcome to Texas lunch. This was before the virus fiasco. This time, it was my daughter and I that stopped for a bite. It was her first time. Her selection was the patty melt. She raved over the sandwich. It looked so good that I think the next time I eat at the Main Street I'll order the patty melt. I had a cod sandwich. It was on a ciabatta which I thought was too much bread - then again I order double burgers to get the right meat to bun ratio - your mileage may vary. The fish was tasty. I discarded the top half of the sandwich. I always enjoy the french fries. Today was no exception. The only thing I didn't like about our meal was the climate we were subjected to, forced on us because of this insidious virus. The staff were as pleasant as they always are, but there is something depressing when you have to order the salt and pepper as well as if you want ketchup it will come in a tiny serving cup. To end this depressing paragraph, they did everything in their power to make this a warm and welcome dining experience. Trapped in a Seinfeld episode... We made a reservation because we were coming to town to go to the theater. We were seated relatively promptly, but after waiting 20 minutes, were told to wait our turn. "I know you made a reservation, but I still have to take orders in the order people come in. I'm the only server, and I have to stage and prep.I'm too busy to help you." We know the owner has been stretched thin, which is why we try to eat there every chance we get. Great service by Jordan! Wonderful lunch today. Huge fried chicken salad with great dressing. My daughter didn't like the watermelon peach tea and it came unsweetened but they took it off our bill. another main street cafe post got the mushroom swiss burger with regular fries (didn't have a choice with fries ):) and the strawberry spinach salad (sub pecans with chicken). best mushroom swiss burger i've had in a very long time. i finished the entire thing, which i normally don't do. the strawberries tasted very fresh, as well as the spinach. the chicken was very moist as well. however, the vinegar ended up in the middle of the dish, thus soaking the spinach at the bottom, failing to evenly coat the salad with vinegar. it still tasted good nonetheless. tammy forgot the specialty fries but it's okay because it was still good! read more

The food is great! We had the fried zucchini, the patty melt and the chopped steak dinner and they were all very tasty and cooked as ordered. It did take a while to get seated and I wouldn't come here if I was in a hurry, but the service was friendly and mostly on point. Strangely, they would not let us sit in the booth, the only padded seats besides the bar, and did not offer an explanation...just told us that we couldn't sit there. My only sort of real complaint though is the green beans. They sounded like they were going to be special with spices and bacon, but they tasted more like regular green beans with pieces of bacon and way too much of a strange pepper spice mixture thrown in at the last minute, but not slow-cooked with them like I had imagined. They weren't bad, but they just tasted like regular green beans, heavily peppered. Another thing to note, if you like to split meals with someone, then be prepared for them to only split the entree, so that both plates get full servings of the sides (for a small charge). That kind of kills any plan to eat less for your diet (no, I don't have a lot of self control...just wait till you try the mashed potatoes) and I would not have ordered an appetizer if I had known that up front. Which reminds me, we had asked for extra gravy and when we received our meals I asked for the extra gravy and I was told that was extra gravy? It was definitely not extra gravy by my standards and usually you would bring more gravy regardless in that situation right? Overall though, this place is great and I will look forward to trying more dishes the next time I am in Garland. read more

It has been a while since I have been to a restaurant that I was a hundred percent comfortable giving a 5-star rating to but that long streak has finally been broken with my visit to the Main Street Cafe in Garland. We were there on a day when they were extremely short staffed and I will still give them a great rating for service and food. I honestly think during our visit just the person that waited on us and the cook were the only two there during the lunch hour. In spite of it being a little hectic and busy and a few dirty tables here in there our service was really good. Are wait person was friendly in spite of having an almost full dining room that she was tending to. She made sure that she visited our table at appropriate intervals to check on us give us refills etcetera and never made us feel like we were being rushed even though she had a lot of customers to take care of. For lunch I got the Boots Burger which is bacon Gorgonzola cheese burger that was perfectly prepared. I absolutely loved the french fries that my meal came with as well, they were perfectly seasoned. My only disappointment was that all me along I was looking forward to apple cinnamon dumplings that they had on a board in the dining room as one of the dessert options. When we asked the right person for them she told us that they had actually run out the night before and that she had been so busy that she had not had time to update the board. I'm not going to hold that against them though because I know what I'm coming back for the next time I come! read more

I decided to try this place due to the reviews and was in the area. First off, not very friendly when you come by yourself. I was offered a bar seat and then told, "the tables are reserved". Didn't understand that and so I sat down to wait. It was 1:30pm and a bit busy but not bad. Two people came in and were seated right away. It was odd, but I went with it. Finally seated and then it took awhile to get any service. Finally, I did. I guess if you aren't local and don't come in all the time, I guess that doesn't work in your favor. Told her (Sydney) it was my first time and it didn't seem to matter. Normally, my experience when you go to a restaurant for the first time, they give you suggestions and bend over backwards with their service. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak (due to the reviews) and only ate about 1/4 of it. It had a funny taste and I wasn't sure if it was the steak or the gravy. My sides were good and I read my book while eating. I did want to say the other wait staff was really friendly. I wished I could have gotten her. She came by and checked up on me. I just didn't get any rapport with Sydney and once I put my food in a container to take with me, she brought me the check and was done! No offer of dessert or anything, I just wished she would have been much more friendlier. Doubt I will be back, the steak was not that great and the service not much better. It looked good, but even when I got it home, my son (who will eat anything) said, "Mom, that steak wasn't very good and it had a funny taste to it". So, guys do better and be better! read more

This is my 2nd time here. First time was not good but it was at the first part of Covid when help was hard to find and curbside was all they did. So last night we gave them another try. It was GREAT! Not a lot of customers for a Friday night. Several empty tables the entire time we were there. Service was good, waitress was attentive. Answered questions about the menu. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak I'd heard so much about. Probably the best I've ever eaten. It was perfectly pounded and so tender you could cut it with your fork. It was thick but cooked thoroughly. They were not stingy on the gravy. Also generous with mashed potatoes and gravy. Green beans need a little more seasoning, but that's better than too much. I ate plenty of my meal last night and still took home about half of itl. The CFS warmed up just as tender today as it was last night. The only complaint I would have is with the restroom. There is only one very small restroom for everyone to use. Really should be checked more often to make sure it's clean. There was no place for me to hang my purse and there was no way I was going to set it on the 'wet' floor. It would only take a minute or less to mop it. But despite the restroom, this was probably the most enjoyable meal I've had out in a long time. Will definitely be back. read more

My wife and I went 2 days in a row she liked her food so much. Enjoyed talking to all three ladies in there. Small business is hard and the restaurant business is one of the toughest without these crazy times we are living in 2020. We will keep coming back and have recommended the cafe several times already. Everything we have has been great, like food you'd make for yourself at home but better. I tried returning a burger I didn't like and owner confronted me after 15 minutes of waiting for my bill. She came up to me and pointed her finger at me and deliberately tried making me feel bad for not liking the burger... I wasn't rude to the waitress or the owner when I returned it so I don't understand why I was treated that way. She kept claiming I didn't explain correctly why I didn't want the burger, as if I ate the whole thing or even needed to give her a thorough explanation. Lady... there was 2 small bites out of that burger please, I even tried getting my boyfriend to eat it but he couldn't because he was allergic to the pecans. She also mentioned it's a mom and pop business so it hurts them, respectfully I don't care about your business the same way I doubt they care that I'm never going back.
