I actually only visited the snack shack area right outside the restaurant, and it was a wonderful experience! You can access this to-go counter from right inside Chelsea Market. We were parched and had to try the yuzu lemonade and ordered the fried chicken bites as well. Most people were in line for onigiri! If you do order the fried chicken, they're making it fresh in the kitchen, so you'll need to wait a few minutes (worth). But if you want a true grab-and-go, definitely opt in for their diverse selection of onigiri! The staff was very friendly as well! read more

A hard to miss restaurant that splits up a space with N Between so it would be easy to miss if you don't pay attention. I got there a little earlier than noon so I sat at the table in chelsea market to wait for it to open (their entrance is inside the Chelsea market). As soon as they opened, we were greeted by their friendly servers who seated us right away. I ordered their 5-piece hand roll set, which included scallop, lobster, tuna, yellowtail, and unagi. The quality of the fish was fresh, and that was definitely the highlight of the meal. However, the overall experience fell a bit short for me. Some of the nori wasn't crispy enough, making the hand rolls difficult to bite through cleanly. I also wish the rolls were wrapped with an extra strip of nori around the bottom instead of leaving both ends open. As soon as I took a bite, the rice started falling out the other end, making the whole experience much messier than it needed to be. Another downside was that a few of the hand rolls contained spicy sauces or ingredients, but this wasn't indicated on the menu. Since I'm not a fan of spicy food, it would have been helpful to know that beforehand. Finally, the unagi was my least favorite of the five as it lacked the rich, savory flavor I was expecting. From the waiter greeting and sitting us to the food and drinks, I mean just everything. Not only did the food taste phenomenon but the presentation was excellent! It really blew me away! We ordered yellowtail & leche de tigre and hokkaido scallop & gooseberry aguachile from the ceviches option, wow! The three handroll set which was the salmon, lobster and yellowtail. Our drink of choice was lychee vodka highball and chika sake cup. Sitting inside of a sushi bar was different because it was my first time and did not know what to expect. It was worth it! I came to Chelsea Market planning to grab a quick bite at a different grab-and-go style sushi spot, but realized when I arrived that it had closed since my last visit. I found Maki a Mano, which opened just 3 months ago, while looking around for another spot to try. Although the menu is relatively small, I was impressed that they had a few vegetarian options to try. When you're seated, you check off the items you'd like to order on a little menu, and they're brought out one by one on the bar. I tried the beet and aji amarillo ceviche that was amazing, and I typically kind of hate beets. I also had two hand rolls -- an avocado and a cucumber ube -- that were fresh and a perfect few bites. This experience was a 10 out of 10. It is a hidden gem inside of Chelsea Market. It is clean , quiet, bright , and minimal modern decor. You are greeted immediately by a host who walks you over to the bar and explains the menu. You are able to substitute one hand roll out of their pre set roll sets. The yellowtail hand roll was the best one -- super fresh, the fish almost had a citrus flavor amazing!! I also opted to switch fish for a mushroom truffle roll which was a great choice getting a nice rich flavor mixed with the rice and seaweed. Tried this restaurant in Chelsea Market after a friend recommended it to me. It has a nice vibe but this is not foodie worthy. The menus are printed on these cheap paper menus but with high end omkase prices (think $10-30/ two bite hand rolls). Honestly I don't care about price if the food stands out but it's just not there. The "sushi chef" is a glorified supermarket sushi chef that was rushing to roll the hand roll as they are serving from halfway down the sushi bar. The rolls are served on cafeteria style paper (what's with the elementary school arts and craft materials?)...I don't understand why they don't spend the extra $ and get a hand roll specific serving vessel like a taco stand or something / anything! Anyways.. They skimp on the fish, the tuna was not even seasoned in the tuna hand rolls and most importantly the seaweed was not properly roasted and is NOT crispy. I'm fricking chewing through and ripping the seaweed apart like jerky.. If you've been to kazi nori or any proper hand roll joint in LA you would understand that this was a cheap knockoff and a shame for pretending to be a hip sushi bar. You order at the tablet and then wait until you get called for your order to be ready. I got the salmon rice ball. It's the freshest you can get it. Came here for a quick lunch before spending the day sight seeing. The restuarant is nice ... modern, bright and clean. The service is friendly and efficient. The concept is one long sushi roll though the size is more in line with a lumpia (skinny and long vs thick round rolls that a sliced into either 6 or 8 individual pieces). It's a set menu where you can order 3, 4 or 5 sushi rolls (pre set - tuna, lobster, salmon, etc) or you can order ala carte. The rolls come out one by one as the chef prepares it. The sushi fish itself is fresh. The lobster was mixed with something and so was the yellowtail so it's not just straight up sashimi grade fish. The seaweed wrapper is fresh and there's a lot of it so the proportions are a little off. At times the seaweed can get soggy from the warm rice and therefore tough to bite through. Served with ginger and green mustard. You are given a full bottle of water (tap) which was nice as I was pretty thirsty and didn't have to keep asking the waiter for more water. It is in Chelsea Market so while it felt a little expensive ($25 for 4 rolls) it may have been on par with the area. Nice place, glad I went there to try it out. read more

I was really hyped up about a handroll bar opening in Chelsea Market, and came a week or two after their grand opening. However, I found my experience here to be rather "mid" (as the kids say nowadays). The ordering style is similar to KazuNori, you fill out a little paper with your order of a prefix set or a la carte. First of all, the sign and website both said it opened at 12pm, but when I got there at 12 they were still setting up inside. I think they actually opened closer to 12:20, so we were just hanging around outside waiting for them to open. Not ideal, but I chalked it up to still needing to iron out the kinks. Secondly, I know I am not expecting an omakase experience by any means, but we did fill out 2 separate papers and expected the right handroll to be placed in front of the right person. The chef decided to place everything from both orders in front of one person, so it got really confusing which piece belonged to who. As for the food itself, I thought the handrolls had excellent fish, but the seaweed wrapper was too chewy and didn't have a good crisp, making it hard to take a bite without the whole thing falling apart. Also, it was slightly disappointing that toro handroll was not part of the prefix menus (it had regular tuna instead, which surprised me given the prices!). The standout from my meal was actually the ceviche, which I do recommend out of everything I tried. Overall, I loved the vibes and the more spacious seating (great if you want to impress a date) but I honestly prefer Kazunori when I want to get my toro handroll fix. read more

New find in Chelsea Market across from the book shop. The overarching concept of Maki a Mano is sushi rolls that are not chopped into pieces. We each ordered two rolls off of the soft opening menu. We were able to interact directly with the chef which allowed him to present the next roll as we finished our first. I had a tuna and a veggie roll (mainly cucumber). Both were quite good. The tuna had Wasabi already inside but I was given the option of no Wasabi (who does that?!) Really cool, chill vibe. nothing was mind blowing here, but I will say the fish is really fresh. The one ding is the service is really slow... between each hand roll, I waited from 10 up to even 20 minutes, which is a bit absurd. The servers also did not refill ginger unless you asked. Given that they just opened though, I understand they might still be figuring things out. If I had to compare maki a mano to other hand roll spots in NYC, I would describe it as an in between between kazunori and nami nori -- the basics are there, with some elevated options too. My favorites were the tuna with caviar, salmon with truffle (had a nice smoky flavor), and the wagyu melted in my mouth. The lobster and scallop were also fresh and tasty. A miss was the yellowtail, which didn't really taste like yellowtail. If you're looking for something more unique, the yellowtail ceviche was also a hit for me. Reminded me of ceviche typical of latin america -- more citrusy and a bit tart. When I walked in on a friday at 5:45, it was near empty, but within the half hour this place was packed. read more

Arriving with no reservation, we were greeted and seated immediately by the friendly host. We opted in for their 5-piece handroll set and one of their premium handrolls (The "Best Bite). Below are my personal thoughts on each handroll in order served to me. 1. Scallop: The scallops were tender, fresh and the touch of yuzu tobiko on top really added to the overall flavour of the handroll. 2. Lobster: The lobster was succulent, and the overall dressing didn't overpower the natural taste of the lobster. 3. Unagi: The unagi tasted fine, but nothing I haven't had before. It didn't blow me away or was memorable. 4. Tuna: This was just okay, but I personally would have preferred whole chunks of tuna vs minced which is a personal preference. Taste-wise, pretty standard. 5. Yellowtail: I found the dressing to overpower the taste of the yellowtail. The taste of fish was hidden but butteryness of the yellowtail was noticeable. 6. The "Best Bite": This included A5 wagyu beef, fatty tuna, uni (sea urchin), caviar and fresh truffle. This is literally one of the best bites of food I've ever had. On top of being absolutely stunning, it took me a moment to admire the beauty of this handroll before indulging. 100% worth every penny. Overall, this was a nice place to grab a quick lunch, and I would gladly return and try another premium handroll. read more

This is a hidden gem! My wife and I stumbled here while visiting Chelsea market. If you have one take away from my review, it's this: YOU MUST TRY THE CEVICHE. It's almost feels weird saying this, the best ceviche I've had in my life was in NYC. My wife and I had ceviche to start and a few hand rolls (all delicious)...for dessert we had another Ceviche. Like all of the restaurants in Chelsea Market, dinner time is a forsaken hour, as tired tourists evacuate the premises and head for their hotels. We sat at the comfortable, but mostly empty, millennial pink bar and tried to get the staff to open a bottle of wine we brought - no dice. So my husband resorted to a very stingy pour of insipid house red, and I had a tasty, not too sweet cocktail that was pretty much devoid of alcohol. The hand rolls were yummy! Crispy nori, warm, perfectly seasoned rice, and fresh fish. Moral of the story: come for lunch! read more
