I feel they are always pushing to try to make you eat some of their special plates. Last time I tried one and the salmon was smushy and had a weird taste. I told the manager to try the dish himself so he would see and he refused to taste their own food. Then I asked him to trade that for something else and he also refused. This is probably the best sushi place I know. It's homey aesthetic puts you at ease. I ordered 3 dishes and it was done in a matter of minutes. When I walked in there was no fish smell(which is critical for sushi establishments). My waiter was a perfectly nice man who kept my drink full despite me constantly drinking it. After my sushi was served I immediately devoured it with extreme intensity for it was so delicious. I ordered green tea ice cream for dessert and once it was served in a matter of minutes and was exquisite. Yes! Found my sushi place for the Tempe/Mesa area. Two words...Yellowtail carpaccio! Order it. All the rolls we ordered and the nigiri were excellent as well. So I feel obligated to warn people of shady companies when I come across them, and this one for sure takes the cake. Makkito Sushi at Dobson Riverview in Mesa. I tried reaching out about how they ripped us off, and their response was to block me. For my birthday, my mom wanted to treat us to dinner, and I chose sushi. She had recently been to Makkito and wanted chose to take us there. Upon ordering, she mentioned to our waiter how on her last visit the chef made a special roll for the table next to her and wondered if he could do the same for us. He asked what we liked and I replied "a good roll or whatever, something deep fried." To our surpise, he brought out a tray of sashimi. No biggie, well eat it. There were 4 of us, and 4 slices of 4 diff types of fish. So we ate that while awaiting the rolls to be delivered. Upon receiving the bill, my mom made a funny face. $134.40. How?? Rolls were around $13each, and we anticipated the shashimi to be around $20-30 (less when we ordered it expecting a deep fried roll). We looked closer at the bill, and $73.99 of that was the shashimi plate! No warming on the price, no heads up that the "special deep fried roll" I requested actually became a plate of all the most expensive fish the chef could put on it. Without that plate, our bill would have been $50.40. Like wtf?! The food was good, but the shadiness of the situation left a bad taste in my mouth. My family loves sushi, and eats it often. I was hopful I'd found a new regular sushi spot, but now, they lost 4 customers for life, all so they could make an extra $40-$50 that night when they were slow. Shady. As. This is a small but extremely busy little sushi bar. Only 11 four person tables and about 6 bar stools. The menu was diverse with house specialties and the price was about average for great tasting fish. My mom is not a sushi person but she was able to find plenty of options on the menu. Atmosphere was quiet enough even with a full house to have nice dinner conversation without shouting across the table. The nigiri portions were of decent size and the rice didn't overcome the pieces. The rolls were delicious large in size not in number of pieces but plenty of good fish in each roll. Too large for a single dip and bite had to cut them in half. The food was good. I had the vegee roll and it was good but hard to eat because it was so big around. Not one you can eat in one bite. The vegetable egg rolls were light, crispy, and good, but I received three instead of the four it stated on the menu. Spicy edamame was good but very oily and hard to eat. I was looking for a sushi place on a Friday during Lent and came across this place. It wasn't far from home and the menu looked pretty good so I decided to give it a try. I called in an order to pick up and was given an ETA of about 15 minutes. I arrived in about ten so my order was not quite ready but it was close to being done by that time. It was emptier than I would have imagined but all the staff was very warm and welcoming. More than one of them made conversation with me during the short time I was waiting which was very cool. The staff alone made me want to return but the sushi itself was also really good. I enjoyed it a lot. Price wise it was about what I would expect so not really any complaints there either. I'd be glad to be coming back here for my sushi fix now and then! read more

I ordered them for lunch and I did not order Sushi. That seems to be a mistake It seems their sushi is the best option. People on here seem to love it. So keep that in mind when reading this. I ordered their "Beef Teriyaki." I've never had Beef Teriyaki like this. It came with peppers, onions (not green, the regular variety) mushrooms and Broccoli. The sauce is a watery, sugary sauce I expect at a cheap Chinese place, and the food is drowned in it. The beef is cut much too thick. It's way over cooked and is hard to chew like rubber. The beef doesn't have a good flavor, almost like microwaved beef. I would call this a pepper beef, not a Teriyaki. I get that this may not be their forte, but don't offer this if you can't make an edible Teriyaki Beef. I would expect this at a hospital cafeteria, but not a Japanese restaurant. I also wouldn't eat here again, it was just that bad. read more

Pretty decent chicken teriyaki. Wasn't in the mood for sushi at the time so I didn't try any. Only dislike is the prices. About the same as Kabuki which I would prefer to go to rather than here, but it's a cute little alternative if you don't want to be around a lot of people.
