I usually check the menu of the sushi spots we hit up to ensure that there are ample tempura options for me, but I went in blind to House Modern Sushi and they didn't let me down! Our table ordered a variety of rolls and other dishes, along with some additional flair (extra eel sauce, extra crunchies, etc). Our server didn't miss a beat and took great care of us. There was a slight delay between ordering and receiving our food, but our server communicated that to us so we knew what was going on. Came here with some friends for dinner and to catch up. As we entered the establishment, we were immediately greeted by a nice, welcoming young lady/waitress/hostess (which happens to be the niece of the chef/owner). We were given a choice of where we wanted to sit among the tables that were not occupied. It a nice, simple medium sized dining area with several tabletops. Once seated, she offered to take our drink orders, then gave us an opportunity to decide what we wanted for dinner. We tried several of their rolls and appetizers for dinner. Atmosphere - The place was empty when we arrived, so I felt a little uneasy. Although I later noticed that it looked like they got an A on their health report certificate they had posted on their wall. There was a fair amount of tables and chairs in the restaurant. They also had full booths and half booth tables available. The restaurant was located inside of a shopping center parking lot. So, we had to drive inside a little bit and got a little lost. Eventually at least two other sets of customers arrived while we were there. The menus were placed on the table. They were paper menus in a plastic sheeting. No music. I liked that. I didn't visit the restroom. Temperature inside was good. I have been to a handful of places where it's been hot. Pictures of some of the food options on the wall. No patio. No problem since it is usually too hot outside to sit. Food - We ordered a katsu that came with rice. The katsu coating was a bit hard. The katsu was cooked well, and was not undercooked. It had a teriyaki sauce on top of it. The rice was fine. The spicy tuna was good. I thought it tasted fresh. We also had the citea roll with peanuts and eel sauce. It was pretty tasty and unique. It also tasted fresh. Service - I saw two employees there. The service here was fine. They had a sushi chef and one waitress. They let us pick our own seats and sit down. Ordering went well and the food came out a little slow. It took a little while for the sushi and katsu to arrive. Did not get a chance to ask for more ginger. The chef was outside smoking when we arrived. Background - Was in the area and I like sushi. The health score on their certificate on the wall for cleanliness showed an A, which was good. Parking - The parking lot is shared with other businesses. As usual, lots of good parking. No parking meters or parking structures. A parking structure with solar panels on top or plants would be nice. Otherwise, no shaded spots available. Future - I could see myself coming back here again to try something new, especially since the fish tasted fresh. read more

We went here for my sister's birthday celebration. The place is really tiny, maybe accommodates 20 people. Servers were nice, they gave my sister a special roll and her choice of mochi. I first must say, I have a favorite sushi spot and I'm very leery of venturing out but on this day I was craving some good sushi- so I went to my normal spot and they were closed, and I was bummed. It has been a while since I took myself out to eat alone. Since I already put pants on, I decided to search for sushi spots in the area and I ran across House Modern Sushi location pretty close to my Home. I read some reviews which were good. Honestly, I was going to just go home. I couldn't get past the location area thinking no way there is a good sushi spot over there. I pondered on how it's been a while since I did a good review so watch out House Modern here I come. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The place is small but very tidy. The staff was immediately welcoming with a smile. Now my first test is always the ice tea... I love ice tea and I cannot stand when you get tea that has remnants of coffee- because they will use a coffee maker to also brew tea- that's bad and takes the taste away. I was blown away by the tea, it was fresh and crisp and sadly also discontinued when I asked what brand they used. Bummer on that one but I enjoyed a glass to go! It took me some time to decide what I wanted. It's always hard to choose when I'm alone because I cannot eat everything my eyes want me too!! I did the tempura as an appetizer. I'm a sucker for tempura veggies and shrimp! The house did not disappoint! Shrimp and veggie tempura had: Asparagus, two onion rings, 3 shrimp, 2 sweet potato, 1 kapocha squash which is now a favorite of mine. It's like a pumpkin or acorn squash like texture. I chose to try their sashimi salad and asked to make it spicy. It was not spicy to me but when I say the sashimi they used was one of the best tasting fish I have had in a while. I could see myself ordering this to take to the park while I watch the kids play. It was light and tasty so it wouldn't make you feel like you could use a nap after. I will say Sekais sashimi salad( my sushi spot) hits different than the House but it was not a sad day. In fact I'm glad I ventured out. I enjoyed the salad very much. They served a little side of cabbage salad in like a sesame seed dressing that I really liked. Because I'm such a chunk and I love food I decided to get Udon soup to go with shrimp tempura. I love Udon and I knew I would be alone for the evening so I said it can be my late night snack. Broth on point! They put my noodles separate from the broth so it stayed fresh and not mushy. Price wise, I do not feel it was over priced. Good sushi with that nice flavor, free from fishy smell or taste is always going to cost more. I think my bill was like 50$. I told myself I'm worth it, and I enjoyed snuggling up on my Couch watching a movie eating my udon hours later in peace and it tasted great! We will now be celebrating my son's birthday there so I can review the sushi rolls of all my kids plates lol.... Excited for the Ahi tower!!! This would also be a great place for a first date, they have outside seating and the movie theatre next door. So go try them out. I do not feel you would be disappointed! read more

I really enjoyed the vibe here. You walk in and see the cool, Japanese decor and tables. I was seated right away. It wasn't very busy during lunchtime but everything went very smoothly. It appeared to have a local vibe to it. The place also looked immaculately clean and the music wasnt blaring but was calm and relaxing. I got my drinks right away and the waitress was very attentive. I got the spicy edamame, dynamite roll, and popcorn scallops. The spicy edamame was good, and typical edamame. The spicy dynamite roll was interesting. It was cooked, had onions and carrots and eel sauce and shrimp I believe? It was very tasty and filling. The popcorn scallops are like popcorn shrimp, but scallops. I wasn't sure what it was but it all made sense to me. It was very good, I'd say as an appetizer or side. The owner and the waitress brought me a complimentary small plate of their cucumber salad and it was also very good! Very tangy and sweet. But super refreshing. Overall I'd definitely come back!
