Mapo Tofu, Mushroom Fries, Cold Sesame Noodles

Super tiny but aesthetic spot that gets packed as it gets later into the night! The food was wonderful. Extremely flavorful but with a slightly unique flavor profile that I haven't tasted before for the mapo tofu and cold sesame noodles. The mushroom fries were excellent! Perfectly crispy with a nice seasoning on it.

I've been wanting to eat here for a while and Wish I had sooner. That numbing sauce is outstanding. I brought a friend for lunch, there were a few tables occupied. It's a small seating area but it's simple, bright and comfortable. The server knew the menu well. She recommended the Dan Dan noodles for my first time. We also ordered the fried tofu with garlic sauce and the pork dumplings. Unfortunately, my friend can't handle heat, so those items we were sharing couldn't be spiced up. My friend had Mikey's beef noodle soup and I had the Dan Dan noodles very spicy. Everything was delicious. Will definitely come back for some numbing sauce!

My friend had tried this spot a few times--he lives a bit closer--and he recommended it as a reasonably priced place to try for our weekly dinner. So off we went, trying to get there on the early side, as it's small (25 seats) and we'd heard it can fill up quickly. We arrived somewhere around 5:45 and were one of only two tables, but maybe a half-hour later it was completely full. The staff is super friendly, the ambiance is cozy and clean, and I like that the spice levels can be adjusted. We opted for the cucumber salad, dan dan noodles, dumplings in chili oil and the mapo tofu (which my friend wanted to try, since he hadn't yet). Food came out quickly, and while I realize that's not uncommon, I wouldn't have minded just a little more spacing. Still, it wasn't so quick to be a problem. My favorite items were the dan dan noodles, which were addictively delicious, and the dumplings in chili oil, which are longer and flatter than some and more flavorful than most. The cucumber salad was also excellent and a nice palate cleanser between other items. I was probably a little less enamored of the mapo tofu. It was good but not quite at the level of the other dishes for me. I still remember the mapo tofu served at the late, great Ricebox in DTLA, and theirs had much more flavor punch. But all in all, Mala Class was excellent, and I'd be happy to return to try more of the menu (and maybe repeat a few faves!).

mala class has been on my list for ages but Highland Park is a bit of a stretch, so I came with a friend on a Thursday for lunch. Parking was pretty chill at that time (snagged a street parking spot in front) and there was no wait. The dan dan noodles had a nice chew to them and the flavoring had the perfect hint of spice against the peanut sauce. The wings were a little too overseasoned -- we had to shake off all of the peppercorn on the top and it was still pretty salty and peppery (but not THAT spicy). They were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, though. The dumplings and chili oil were probably my favorite bite. They're like wontons except they didn't do the last fold, and the sauce they are in is very well-balanced with a strong hit of acid against sweetness. The mapo tofu needed some sugar to bring out the flavor of all of the spices because otherwise it felt like there was no real flavor, where there were a million spices working against each other. I would definitely pass on this one but everything else was pretty good. The interior is very classically Highland Park-esque and our server was super nice! I would come back to try other dishes.

Recommend comíng in early as there isn't much seating and an ample wait time during the evenings leading into the weekend. Our party of 4 waited for 45 minutes, despite arriving at 6:30pm. Concerned we were not as it afforded our group enough time for us to walk down to the local barcade for a couple of fun goal arounds at the pinball and multiplayer racing games. The mala is so tastefully done here with the wings and the fried mushrooms (not pictured), stealing the show. The Dan Dan noodles prepared at bedside was a nice touch. Highly recommend for a unique and fun dining experience :)

I have driven past this place on York and was always curious so I decided to stop by. It's a small, homey, and intimate interior. Makes you feel like you are at someone's home in a welcoming way. I got the dan dan noodles (I liked the peanut sauce, but not a lot of pork with the dish), dumplings ( solid, nothing crazy), and apple soda (a little too sweet, but I enjoyed it). The dishes were solid, decent seasoning I was expecting a bit more in that department. Overall, it's a solid spot nothing too impressive. It's a cool spot to do small plates. They did forget about drink so I did have to remind my server, but overall service was alright. If you want expand your taste buds a bit give this spot a try.

New favorite spot in highland park, wow! Garlic soy wings - 5/5 - holy crap, probably the best wings I have had in my entire life. We loved it so much we ordered 3 plates for my party of 3 so we each had one lol. They taste like Korean fried chicken. There are 4 pieces and they are all flats (my favorite!) very large sized pieces and the flavor was unreal. Favorite dish at this place. Dan Dan noodles - 5/5 - amazing! Great portion, flavorful, no peanuts which is great for those allergic, and just get this. Mushroom fries - 5/5 - I've never had mushroom fries before, but these were addicting and I could not stop eating them! The dry seasonings was so good I wish they sold it. Dumplings - 4/5 - great dumplings! The sauce was incredible Mapo tofu - 5/5 - I don't eat this but my husband thought it was insanely good. Very spicy so order mild if you can't do spice. Service - 5/5 - all servers very friendly, knowledgeable in the dishes, and attentive! Ambiance - 5/5 - very cute inside! It's quite small, and they don't take reservations so I recommend coming early. Not the best place for a large group though because of the size. Parking is easy, we found parking right out front the two times we visited. Overall found my new obsession!

Came here with my friend on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. We had to find parking on the street which was kind of inconvenient since it was a far spot away. The food was great! My favorite was the Mushroom fries and Beef Noodle soup. Everything was of course a little spicy and had a mala flavoring, so if that is something you enjoy, I would recommend this place. The entire bill came out to be $58 (not including tip) which is pretty decent for ordering 4 dishes.

Great food in Highland Park! Parking, I was able to find street parking on a weeknight. It's a cute little restaurant, but their flavors are amazing. I was addicted to their mushroom fries! Like you can munch on it while watching TV or something. Staff were also friendly and accommodating. Their chicken wings were plump and flavorful! I shared with my friend, and we didn't want to overeat, so we chose 2 dishes and the mushroom fries as an appetizer. It was more than enough. Would recommend this spot 10/10!

Went to Mala Class last as a walk in on Saturday night around 6pm and the wait was ~20 minutes, which was great. The tables moved fast. The staff were very friendly and walked us through the menu. Interior is simple and minimalist with about 8 tables. I had just gotten back from a trip to Sichuan so I was excited to see how Mala Class would compare. We got the mushroom fries, salad, cucumbers & tofu skin, chicken wings, and cold sesame noodles. The standouts were the salad, mushroom fries, and wings. Definitely not as spicy as Sichuan, but that's to be expected.

Absolutely love this place and how close it is to my apartment! I came here last weekend with a friend after much contemplation of what to eat. The restaurant was a bit farther down York Blvd. than I expected but not too far. There was ample street parking when we arrived, which was at 5:30 PM on a Saturday. We sat inside the restaurant and there weren't too many people. To be honest, both my friend and I came into the restaurant with a bit of doubt, seeing how the restaurant wasn't in your typical, bomb Chinese food area. Boy was I mistaken. The staff were incredibly nice, especially our server, who not only gave us recommendations, but also told us what to expect as for spice. I really appreciated the personal touches he added by playing with our pride for spice Now, as for the food, I thought all of it was exceptional, minus an item or two. First, the chili oil dumplings, I think they were just okay. We liked the chili oil but the dumplings weren't anything too special. However, the cucumber and bean curds and the mushroom fries... don't even get me started with how good they were, especially the fries! Absolutely ingenious to make mushrooms like that, especially with that spice powder that they toss them in! As for the mains, the dan dan noodles are a must have! They serve it table side and it looks a bit lighter than most dan dan noodles I have had, but the flavor was incredible. I liked the mapo tofu as well, but the noodles were the star! Overall, I wouod definitely come back here! On weekends, however, I would opt to get there when they open; once we finished our meal, at 6:15-30 ish, the restaurant was packed!!

I've seen the hype online, but honestly not crazy impressed...I do give props for not being crazy expensive though! My friend and I came at 4pm on a Wednesday, looking for a late lunch / early dinner situation since we were busy. We definitely should've checked online first, but just FYI: they are closed 3:30pm - 5pm (our fault for not checking!!). We waited the hour and came back at around 5:15pm. Since dinner service had just started, there was only one other party inside, and we were seated immediately. The space is relatively small with around 6-8 tables, and it was full by the time we left. The menu is very tiny with approximately only 15 items. We got the szechuan salad, fried tofu, and mapo tofu (medium heat). We expected strong spice, so we ordered a bowl of rice for $1.50. The food came out relatively quickly. The salad is a mix of romaine and red cabbage, and the standout is the jicama, which is unique to me in a salad. The dressing was too vinaigrette-y for my liking, but I appreciate the effort to add in spices and diversify from Western salads. The tofu dishes came out next. I think my issue with the two was that they were not mala -- it was neither spicy nor numbing. Granted, my spice tolerance is quite high, but the flavors weren't there for me. Despite being sprinkled in red pepper, it did not have flavor. The fried tofu was, in my opinion, bland, and the pepper flakes did not add flavor. The crunch of the tofu was great, but I guess I'm used to the aromatics seeping into the soft part of the tofu. We ordered the medium level of the mapo tofu, but I wish we'd gotten the extra spicy. I'm not sure if there's a lack of peppercorns or whatever, but it was not numbing in the way I anticipate Sichuan to be. I did not need the rice at all to offset the spiciness or numbness. The dish was also much more soupy than I have seen before - it made the rice too soupy. Rather than the spicy flavor popping out, what stood out to me was the salt - the dish was very salty even when mixing it. I appreciate mala class's innovative attempt to bringing a somewhat western approach to Sichuan food. I think the dishes I ordered didn't live up to my expectations as they were somewhat more authentic dishes (and also lacked ingredient diversity with two tofu dishes haha), but I see high potential in dishes like mushroom fries and mala chicken wings.

This place is legit! Everything on the menu bursts with flavor. The quality of ingredients is tops. Try the mushroom fries and wings, but you can't go wrong with anything else. Cute neighborhood place and feel. Service is as fast and friendly as it gets. Easily my favorite restaurant on York. read more

Easily the best Sichuan food in the area! I literally dream about the Dan Dan noodles and the wings! Service is always great and the space is super cute. There is limited seating, especially when it's busy, so be sure to plan ahead if you don't want to wait too long. read more

King here for some food based on the reviews. Very small and quaint shop. The food was extremely tasteful and spicy, but in a good way, not burning my mouth. The beef stew noodle was cooked al dente but the beef was just a little bit tough everything else we had which was a dad noodles and shrimp was excellent, including the chicken wings and the spicy dumplings. Extremely well done. I just wish they had more variety read more

So great! We ordered a bunch of dishes but I thought the Dan Dan noodles were my favorite. The mao pao tofu was good and fairly spicy. The rice was really good too. Note that they don't have dessert, which would have been nice at the end of a spicy meal. read more

Cute spot with a cozy feel (very small), friendly staff, and solid Sichuan food! I don't know what they put in their flour/dredge for their wings but it makes the wings super crispy, which is great. The dan dan noodles were just the right level of numbing spice and a little sweet, which we weren't expecting but I liked it! I was also a big fan of the mushroom fries, which I haven't seen done like this place does anywhere else. Although I didn't think we got that much food, by the time we stood up to leave I was a lot fuller than I thought. Prices are very reasonable and I'd come back especially if I don't want to drive all the way to SGV for some solid Sichuan fare! read more

The East Side outside of the SGV doesn't have quality Sichuan cuisine. Mala hits all of the right notes. The music selection is fire by the way...(Tom Misch, Jungle...) We ordered the wings, dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, and Mapo Tofu. All of the dishes were multi-dimensional. Salt balanced with heat, crispy versus soft. The price point is amazing for the neighborhood and for the quality of the food. Kevin did a great job explaining the dishes and is really into the food they're serving. Will be back! read more

This was my first time having Sichuan style food, it definitely did not disappoint! I had the mushroom fries and wings. The wings had a type of peppercorn on them that I believe was actually a type of dried berry, ( I asked ) that gave my mouth a tingling numbness, but was not overwhelming, really unique mixed with the gentle spice, I've never NOT put sauce on fries or wings, here today I didn't need too. Food came out fresh in about 3 minutes as well. Really good price points on top of it all, I'll be back. read more

Wow. This place is legit. I could eat their mushroom seafood dish ALL DAY (I kept calling g them 'mushroom calamari' because it doesn't actually have any seafood). So good! The dan dan noodles were *chef's kiss* and I got them without pork so if you don't eat pork, you should definitely still give them a try! The restaurant itself is super cute and chill. Owners are super nice and you can tell that they love what they do! This place will be on my regular rotation. read more

This spot is such a gem! I've been here several times since it's opened and it has been a hit every time with everyone I bring. My favorites are the spicy fried tofu, Dan Dan noodles and spicy beef noodle soup. The flavors of every dish is complex and comforting, I'm always looking forward to coming back. The service is also always top notch, even for a small bustling location, I feel like I've gotten excellent service here and it keeps me wanting to come back! read more

I love this Mala Class! I'm obsessed with their beef noodle soup and chicken wings. I also really love the cucumber bean curd salad. The menu may be small, but every dish I've had has been memorable. Plus, the service is outstanding, and the cozy, laid-back atmosphere makes dining in a real treat. Highly recommend! read more

Finally, some spicy Chinese food in Highland Park! Mala Class definitely earns the name, with wonderfully balanced, spicy and numbing seasonings and flavors for each of the dishes we tried. I absolutely loved the Mushroom fries-- shimeji mushrooms wonderfully crisped with a bold and delicious Cumin seasoning blend. Thin like potato fries with a fried eggplant-like texture. The Mala Wings are also a must have-- I hate dry rubs, because I hate dry chicken. The plate I got happen to be all flats (we love dark meat) and the mala rub made the dish even crisper and crunchier. There's a bit of sweetness from the soy drizzle that really comes through to round it into the perfect bite. I've been on the hunt for some actually spicy and numbing Dan Dan Noodles without having to go to Mian in 626. This one definitely compares in quality-- nuttier, savory, and again a great blend of szechuan spices that the heat builds. I wish there was more pork and preserved vegetables, however. They were a little hard to find. Lastly, we had the chili oil dumplings-- the weakest. They were good, but not memorable like the other plates. A great opportunity to try their homemade chili oil, however. I look forward to going back to try the garlic shrimp, which they were out of but had my heart at first glance! My bill was $45 for 4 dishes, which is pretty affordable! Filling for 2 if you regularly have moderate portions for dinner. Very worth it. This place is a 4.5/5 for me. As an FYI, expect a wait, the resteraunt is new and the staff is small-- working fast as they can to get some delicious meals out, without rushing their customers. My hope is they continue to thrive, so they can grow. :) read more

Casual dining with a simple yet delicious menu! Service was fast and accommodating; the dining area is small and a little bit noisy/bright which contributes to the casual vibe. Favorite part was the dumpling appetizer though the noodle dishes were also phenomenal. Definitely recommend ordering a variety of dishes for the table and sharing. Absolutely phenomenal service, so much information shared about the food and spices! I loved each item and all the different spices and flavor each dish held. I loved each dish individually, it's hard to pick a favorite. The restaurant is so nicely decorated, and it's nice and cool inside, their AC is working overtime to keep us cool on these 90 degree summer days! I tried out this new restaurant in my neighborhood last night. Mala Class is so good. I am so happy to have an excellent Szechuan restaurant close to home. Everything we had was delicious and we shared many dishes -- mushroom fries, spicy wontons, salad, spicy beef noodle soup, sesame noodles, and spicy shrimp. I can't even say which was my favorite dish because each was incredibly delectable. The decor was comfortable and it was reasonably priced. I recommend this restaurant. read more

He walked us through the menu and gave us helpful suggestions. We ordered the mushroom fries, chicken wings, dumplings, and Dan Dan noodles. THEY WERE ALL SO GOOD! My husband & I visited Mala Class this evening for dinner. We were greeted by the owner and he was super friendly. He told us all about the restaurant and the origin of the name. The food was phenomenal! We ordered the mushroom fries, Szechuan chicken wings, the dumplings in chili oil, Dan Dan noodles and cukes and bean curds. Delicious dan dan noodles, perfectly al dente with the creamy flavorful sauce. The shrimp stir fry was a pleasant surprise with tender yet crispy shrimp, tossed with onions and lotus root. I would've preferred some aromatics with the red oil wontons, which were very mild and a tad too chewy for my taste. This place is amazing- the food, the service EVERYTHING every time, just super delightful. I've tried almost everything on the menu but damn if those aren't the best wings I've had in my life. Our absolute favorite place for Szechuan style food. The Dan Dan noodles are insanely delicious, perfect balance of spicy, nutty, and a hint of sweetness. You must order the mushroom fries! One of the most uniquely tasty things I've ever tried. My personal favorite dish is the dumplings in chili oil. I'm obsessed with the chili oil sauce. Omg, SOOOO delish! We shared the dan dan noodles, the 3 cup Jidori chicken, pan-fried pork buns, and cucumber salad. I also got the soy milk, which I believe is made in-house. The food came pretty quickly and arrived before our drinks, in fact. The cucumber salad was fresh, and the cucumbers had a nice crunch. I liked the flavor of the chicken, but I thought it a bit on the dry side. The dan dan noodles and pork buns were excellent, however. The noodles were flavorful and had an enjoyable chew. The pork buns were tasty as well and filled with juicy meat. I also really liked the soy milk. It wasn't too sweet, and it had a nice thickness. The staff was friendly. The restaurant is a casual spot with a self-serve water station.

I had a fantastic meal at Mala Class! We ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, Dry Pepper Fried Tofu, and Sesame Noodles, and everything was delicious. The Dan Dan Noodles were definitely the standout for me--perfectly chewy noodles with an incredible balance of spicy, numbing, and savory flavors. If you like a little heat, these are a must-try! The Sesame Noodles were also great--cool, refreshing, and a nice contrast to the bolder flavors of the Dan Dan. The Dry Pepper Fried Tofu was crispy on the outside, with a delicious, flavorful coating. Even if you're not usually a tofu person, I'd highly recommend giving it a try! The restaurant has a modern and clean interior, which makes for a nice dining atmosphere. We came on a Saturday afternoon and were seated quickly, which was a plus. There's street parking nearby, and we didn't have any trouble finding a spot. Mala Class is a small spot on a busy main street, so it might be easy to miss while driving by. Just keep an eye out for the green building, and you'll know you're in the right place! One more great feature: they offer contactless payment! Just scan the QR code on the bill, and you can pay directly from your phone, which makes checkout super easy. I had a great meal at Mala Class and would definitely come back again. Everything I ordered was really well done. The fried tofu was crispy on the outside and soft inside without being greasy. The dan dan noodles had the perfect amount of spice and a good balance of savory and nutty flavors. Mapo tofu was packed with bold flavors and had just the right amount of heat. I'm thrilled to share our delightful visit to Mala Class. Our server graciously walked us through the menu, especially accommodating our friend's peanut allergy. We were relieved to learn that their kitchen is peanut-free, using sesame in their Dan Dan noodles instead. This meant our friend could savor the dish without worry, a rare treat given the typical use of peanuts. The wings and dumplings were outstanding recommendations from our server, who also advised us to savor the dumpling sauce with other dishes. Really good, casual and modern Szechuan food. Friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices, although I was charged $5 for a tea bag which is the equivalent of $10 for the whole box (hot water was never brought, tea bags sat on a small saucer for the duration of the meal). Felt a little salty about it but overall a great place and I will be back with lots of friends, maybe not ordering tea. read more
