Came here because we wanted to eat Sichuan food! I had read a couple of reviews here before we came and overall, the consensus was that the dishes here are really salty, and I agree. Although salty, the flavors were pretty good and the service was quick. Chong Qing Fried Chicken - My husband loved this dish although I thought it was very salty. The spicy and numbing of the peppers infused with the chicken which was great. The chicken stayed nice and crispy the whole time. Stir Fried Beef - Pretty standard dish, but again, too salty. Not much to report about but the flavors were great, just too much salt. Overall, my experience here would have been great, but the salt was just too much. I probably wouldn't come back again.

Since I no longer truly reside in the 626 on a permanent basis, my search for new Asian restaurants puts me in many areas to find the latest delicious food venues, and Xiang La Hui is one of them. This place is not for the faint of heart, if you're afraid of spicy food. However, if you're adventurous and like a little kick to your dishes , this is the place to be. I did ask for my kung pao chicken to be less spicy, but I ordered the Dan Dan noodles to be regular spicy, and it was quite delicious. The noodles had the requisite springiness in its bite. The Jamaican lady sitting at the next tables shared a spicy Tin Foil pork rib with me, it was also delicious. She also recommended the Happy Chicken dish. Finding out the best dishes is easy, if you manage to talk to the regular customers. Generally, it's really hard to find people like me who occasionally like to adventure out for spicy food, but this place hits the spot when you have a dried chili craving. It's a good restaurant to bring your good friends, there are several large round tables available, several rectangular tables with booth seats or chairs, and the portions are very good for sharing. There is parking lot located at the back of the restaurant, and also some limited street parking. In the dining area, there's a mounted television showing you the chefs who are cooking Szechuan dishes, twirling around the red dried chilis in the wok pan, dishing out the food, and you see people enjoying and eating the food, great entertainment if you're eating by yourself. Do check out this restaurant when a craving for delicious spicy food comes upon you, this place won't disappoint you!

This was our first food stop during our visit in Los Angeles! My boyfriend suggested this restaurant since he previously visited with his family and enjoyed the food here! Once we came in, we were seated right away since there wasn't a line of people. We were able to scan a QR code to view the menu and place our order. We ordered three dishes: Toothpick Lamb, Mapo Tofu, and the Wonton with Chili Oil. Rice was not included, so we had to get that ordered as well. The food took a little longer than I would have liked since we were so hungry. Also, we were on a time crunch for a reservation later in the afternoon. The food was great! Served fresh and hot. I LOVED the Toothpick Lamb, even though over time my mouth was getting numb from the spice, but it was so good. I would definitely order that again! I love Mapo Tofu, but this particular one was spicier than I would have liked. Still enjoyed it though. The Wonton with Chili Oil was good, nothing special about it. The three dishes was a lot for the two of us, but we managed to finish it all without taking any leftovers. We got here a little after 1PM and was able to grab street parking right across the restaurant. The street is pretty busy, so it was a bit intimidating getting in and out of the parking spot.

I ordered the Sichuan boiled fish and stir-fried green beans, and wow, what an experience. The boiled fish was really good. It had that signature numbing sensation from the Sichuan peppercorns and was incredibly fragrant with all those aromatics floating on top. The spice level was definitely there, but it was tolerable, not one of those dishes where you can't taste anything except pain. You could actually enjoy the flavors while getting that nice tingle on your tongue. The stir-fried green beans, these were the real star for me. They came out hot and perfectly fried with this blistered exterior. The garlic and ginger flavor was such an amazing combination, really punchy and aromatic. Honestly, I could eat a whole plate of just these beans. One thing to note, rice is an add-on here, not automatically included, so keep that in mind when you're ordering. The service was fast, really efficient. I came during weekday lunch time and there was no waiting at all, which was great. Just sat down and the food came out quickly. Price-wise, it's on the higher side It's worth it when you're really craving authentic Sichuan flavors. Sometimes you just need that numbing spice fix, and this place delivers. Would definitely come back, especially on a weekday when it's not crowded. street parking*

Excellent Hunanese food! I'm from Changsha province and the food is very authentic. We had the chili fish head and it's one of the best ones I've had in the U.S. Free parking available. Very convenient!

Food 4.1/5 Service 4.5/5 Value 4.2/5 Overall a great experience of a well rated Sichuan restaurant. The service was extremely quick and food came out piping hot! There was ample parking on the street when I went Sliced beef (cold dish): a favorite dish of mine, and the way this restaurant did not disappoint. The chili sauce was amazing and the beef was super tender. There are quite a few pieces with fat, which I personally love but I know can turn off some people. Strongly recommend Green Beans - Overall well stir fried but slightly salty for me Wok fried dry pot - This dish was a bit confusing for me. The meat was a little bit chewy, but I really liked the flavor and watercrest. I think the dish can be more cohesive and a different cut of meat would be preferred. Chong qing chicken - A great dish! The chicken was really crispy and quite flavorful. Would strongly recommend and would typically get the lamb, but the friend I was eating with didn't like lamb. A great replacement!

there's a big free parking lot close by. the place is clean and tidy. service was snappy and you order your food through QR code on the table. my signal was bad inside but they have wifi posted on the wall. ambience is fairly casual and there's often a nice flow of diners in this place. the food order: - fried tofu + veggies tasted fresh was a nice side dish to contrast the spicier dishes - the grilled fish w/ pickled veggies was great. i prefer the green peppercorn to red these days and this one was a bit heavier on the acidity (which i love). - tinfoil pork ribs were very good. the meat was moist but with good chew. heavy on the chilies, peppercorn, garlic and cilantro. for me it had the perfect spiciness--any more and it would've been too challenging. will def come back.

tl;dr even the stellar toothpick lamb and string beans can't protect against the duller menu items or the eyebrow-raising sanitary rating Chengdu Taste and Sichuan Impression set the bar for Alhambra's Sichuan scene, so, as a relative newcomer to Main St, Xiang La Hui had its work cut out for it. It carves out a niche, finding a balance between chicness and affordability, and its food is more seasoned and less spicy (Xiang La Hui loosely translates to "balanced fragrance and spice"). Larger-than-life photos of signature menu items decorate the tinted windows out front. Enter into a slightly walled-off waiting area, and a staff member will direct you toward an open table. An upholstered half-booth runs along the right wall, and a dedicated bar is in the far back. The interior leans heavily into accent lighting and modern finishes, from darkwood tables to birdcage-like lighting fixtures to textured wood panel walls. Contemporary Chinese pop alternates with 70s English hits. The restaurant always boasts a few large parties, but tops out at about 1/3 full. Between 2 visits, I've been treated to surprising hits and definite misses. Xiang La Hui's Toothpick Lamb was the best rendition I've had, sporting an excellently cumin-forward flavor with moderate mala and saltiness. The mala-centric Kung Fu Boiled Beef and Kung Fu Boiled Fish are perfect to pair with rice, but I wish that bowls and a non-slotted ladle were provided so I could sip the broth. Most notably, the mildly spicy and exquisitely salty Wok-Fried String Bean was possibly the best dish I've enjoyed, combining an uber-rich flavor with a satisfying crunch. On the other hand, the Cucumber in Garlic was mostly forgettable, not quite vinegary enough and not quite garlicy enough. The Chong Qing Fried Chicken, consisting of bite-sized breaded chicken nuggets, had an off-putting greasiness akin to KFC chicken skin (which, admittedly, my partner seemed to enjoy). Finally, the signature Happy Chicken (which nearly every table seemed to order) was too messy and cumbersome -- the hanging chicken pieces dripped grease directly onto the table, and the small bones interfered with easily indulging in the well-seasoned skin. Dishes were prepared quickly in the blink of an eye, and, while each seemed incredibly large, a decent chunk of the volume was dedicated to Sichuan peppercorns and other inedible spices. Everything was mild to moderately spicy; I had no trouble, but a few less experienced members of the party felt their mouths on fire. Across 4 dishes, my bill for both visits has hovered right around $100 (after tax and tip). Most unpalatably, Xiang La Hui has only a B health inspection rating, and, unsurprisingly, the floor and counter surfaces feel greasy and unclean to the touch. For this reason, I probably won't add Xiang La Hui to my Sichuan repertoire, even if the lamb and string beans were out of this world.

Great Szechuan spot in SGV. They have the ever elusive toothpick lamb that is hands down my favorite dish. Any Szechuan place I go to has to have this. Theirs is quite good with that mala flavor and quite a generous portion. They have a lot of other standards such as string beans mapo tofu and the stir fried pork. I will say I found quite a bit of the food on the salty side which is why I can't give them 5/5. Service was very attentive and the ordering was quite easy on the Asian app/website that's becoming more common. I personally like menus but it was easy to navigate and food came out extremely quickly!

Very authentic, really reminded me of my time in China. Friendly staff and tasty food! Wasn't too crowded on a Thursday night, but it definitely wasn't dead either.

Drove 30 miles to get here, not a bad place for Szechuan food. You can tell the oil they use is in house, they don't use those supermarket Hot Oil Packets that most restaurants do when making dry pot or boiling fish. We ordered the Roasted Fish, it didn't disappoint, however I do argue the portions of fish seemed little, wished there was more fish in the dish, but the flavors were not overwhelming, you can taste the different layers of spices in the oil they used, so not bad. For cold dishes we ordered garlic soy sauce eggplant, this was really good, and we also went for the cold cucumbers to balance it out, not bad. Our final dish was the House Mala Spicy Crab, very good, strongly recommend! Overall the service, waitress was really good, she took care of us, the interior space is very fitting, nice and quiet, only downside is probably parking but overall it's worth a drive for szechuanese food.

Been here twice with family. It's a very nice place, beautiful decorations, two tv screens showing food shows, and it's quite small with max capacity of 70. Their menu is via a QR code per table and you order on the phone. You can choose the language to be English or Chinese which is great. They have dishes that are not spicy, mild, spicy, and very spicy. My uncle ordered some spicy dishes and asked them to make them mild, which is already pretty spicy for me and him , but it's great for anyone who can handle the spice. The dishes that weren't spicy that I enjoyed were the pork belly dish, lamb ribs, green beans, and sweet and sour chicken. The rest were really spicy, I tried the Kung pao shrimp which was made mild spice level but it was pretty spicy still .... I saw a table order a beer tower thing, a rack of hanging chicken wings, and a hotpot like stew with a lot of food. Seems there are really cool items others should try next time. They have gendered restrooms where the sink and mirror are outside. They were BOTH broken when we ent for dinner so very disappointed. so we went to Ross for restrooms which was a few blocks away or a min drive away...

A Rare Gem of Authentic Sichuan Cuisine Yesterday, I…read morediscovered a hidden gem: Chuan Wa Zi (川娃子)!Szechuan Delicious! Every single dish I tasted--from the authenticity of the flavors to the freshness of the ingredients and the precision of the wok heat (huohuo)--absolutely blew me away. Usually, entering a Sichuan restaurant means being blasted by "spicy, spicy, spicy" and "numbing, numbing, numbing," with choices limited to just water-boiled, sour soup, or mala flavors. However, the chef at Chuan Wa Zi uses only the freshest ingredients to create dishes that are pure and original. My friends were all full of praise! The Highlights of the Meal * Morel Mushroom & Chicken Consommé: Served in a double-boiled stew pot, the unique sweetness of the morels combined with the delicate fragrance of the chicken was so addictive I couldn't stop at just one bowl. * Braised Lamb with Radish: This featured skin-on young lamb--tender and perfectly cooked yet retaining a delightful chew. The radish was braised until deeply flavorful, and the cilantro garnish was the perfect touch, elevating the aroma without overpowering the richness of the lamb. There was zero gamey smell. Eating the lamb skin provided a boost of collagen--a truly nourishing and warming dish. * Chengdu Baby Cabbage (Er Cai): Stir-fried in a rich broth, it was incredibly sweet with a hint of bitterness that perfectly balanced the richness of the lamb. According to traditional wisdom, "five flavors nourish the five organs." Sichuan's baby cabbage is only in season for one month during spring. It's known to clear "heart fire," refresh the mind, and improve sleep. * Sautéed Pork with Celtuce (Lettuce Stem): The pork was incredibly silky and tender, achieved not through baking soda or heavy starch, but purely through masterly knife work and heat control. Paired with the crisp celtuce, it was a perfect harmony of "silky" and "crunchy." * Sichuan Jelly Noodles (Liangfen): Added at the last minute, Jing (host of Oushang Beauty Spa) claimed these are the most authentic and smooth jelly noodles in Greater Los Angeles. Made purely from mung bean starch with no additives, the texture was clean and soft. The seasoning was light and balanced--just a simple blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, chili oil, garlic, and cilantro. From start to finish, there was no overwhelming spiciness or discomfort--just a comforting and refreshing dining experience that leaves you wanting more. House-Made Specialties It's worth mentioning that the owner personally prepares all the cold appetizers, such as the Smoked Pressed Duck and the platter of Handmade Sausages, Cured Pork (Larou), Cured Ribs, and Spicy Pork Head Meat. They were fragrant and meaty without any of the oily aftertaste often found in over-dried meats. We saw many people calling in to order these platters to go as snacks for drinks (xiajiu), and we definitely plan to do the same next time! Chef's Recommendations & Hidden Menu They offer a variety of other specialties like Pork Tripe in Golden Soup, Spicy Eel with Glass Noodles, and Basu "Glutton" Bullfrog. Some dishes, like our Lamb and Chicken Soup, must be pre-ordered by phone. Their classic Sichuan stir-fries--Flash-fried Kidney, Mao Xue Wang, Laziji (Chili Chicken), and Twice-cooked Pork--are all spectacular. They even serve Xian Shao Bai (Savory Steamed Pork Belly), a nearly lost classic that requires incredible knife skills and offers a perfect balance of sweet and savory. A Sweet Ending To wrap up, the owner's wife treated us to their Handmade Fermented Rice Soup (Laozao) with four-colored mini tangyuan (glutinous rice balls). Each color had a different natural flavor--sour fruit, rich sesame, and red bean--with no artificial coloring. The soup had a delicate fermented aroma and silky egg drops, providing a perfect ending to our feast. Closing Thoughts It has been a long time since I've had food this authentic that wasn't "scary spicy." I am truly grateful to find a restaurant that treats cooking as an art and operates with such a strong conscience and craftsmanship.

What a nice surprise! Authentic Sichuan dishes, delicious flavors, and very reasonably priced…read more Definitely worth a visit.
