After visiting Central Park recently, my husband and I happened upon this place on our way back to the subway. In speaking with the bartender, we found out that the people who own the bar are 100% Irish. So this place is a genuine Irish bar. It has an old-school feel to it, with dark wooden paneling and the all-wood bar. The service we received was wonderful. Our bartender was a lovely woman who originally hails from New Hampshire. She was very personable and always made sure our glasses were full. The regulars that were in there were very nice to us as well. Our bar bill was reasonable. Dive in...the beer is cold! This Upper West Side super dive bar is really a smelly and dirty Irish pub but my friends and I had one hell of a night here a few times when in the area and have fond memories of some people we would just meet at the place and hang with in the booths and drink until the sun came up. Malachy's Donegal Inn is one of those hidden gems that one rarely comes across in New York City. Even through the pandemic this bar has managed to keep the same charm and culture as it has before it started. While Irish pubs are not few and far between, there's something about Malachy's that gives you the warmth of being at home with your family while still being in a dimly lit pub in the heart of Manhattan. When you walk in being greeted with a sweet Irish woman who will have a chat with you while you're getting climatized to the pub. They have a good selection of drinks and food, but they do lack on the draft beer side of things. The menu will give u everything you could possibly want from bar food while still serving Irish pub classics that would make any shepherds pie lover happy. I started off with the pretzels, having been told by some regulars in the bar that that's the staple appetizer. I also ordered a half pounder burger which was one of the best burgers I had in a very long time. The overall experience of Malachy's is one of comfort and a blast from the past kind of feel. These bars in New York City are on their knees for help and places like Malachy's won't be around much longer if the government does not allow indoor dining. When I go into these places I always leave hoping it won't be my last time to be apart of such a beautiful establishment. read more

Ended up here on a Sunday afternoon around 4pm & the waitress took our drink orders & we requested the menu so we could order. She forgot our menus & when I received my drink there was something black floating at the bottom of the glass. After informing the waitress she immediately fixed it & after requesting the menus once again we were informed that they ran out of wings. I found that difficult to believe because the place wasn't packed.. Plus isn't there football games that happen on Sundays? I feel that a sports bar should be prepared during game days, but then again I'm not a sports fan whatsoever so what do I know. read more

Our Central Park pedi cab guy recommended this divey place as the "bar that NY bar owners go to". Had the Philly cheesesteak on garlic bread (very garlicky and yummy!) and the hubby had a burger. Philly came w fries and a pickle. Burger came w onion rings. Both were very tasty. Hubby also had 3 beers. Bill came back extremely reasonable. To note: - Women's bathroom was clean (and warm cuz there was a radiator in it). - Amount of TV'a were enough (don't expect a fancy sports bar set up). - Sound level (of tv's and background music) was perfect where I could have a very comfortable conversation with my hubby across the table (and my throat didn't hurt from trying to talk over the noise). - Staff are attentive and friendly. Ok - this is a BAR. It does smell like a BAR. But, if you want to go, sit and have a few beers with friendly bartenders and salty regulars, this is a great place to go. I've been a few times and the juke box is respectable, the beer is cold, the service is good, the bartenders are friendly, and there's always someone to start a conversation with. Haven't tried the food. There are so many other places to eat on Columbus or Amersterdam, I don't know that I'd go here for the food. The whistle-wetting options near Central Park West are scant, but Yelp pointed me to this ditty. We were cooling off after the JP Morgan run and so, predictably, were a few dozen other runners due to the proximity of the bar. The staff were game but overwhelmed by the demand (I wonder if they knew there was a huge race that night). But we were able to snag a table eventually and rage for a couple of hours. Drink selection was sub-average, but the place looks good for locals. read more

Went there before meeting some family. Was not what I expected. I thought..wow..upper west side..fun!! Cool! Open minded! NOT!! They had decent beer, but the food was just eh. The bartender was nice until he told me that not many women understood men and the ones that did were lesbians. Yeah, NOT exactly what I wanted to hear from someone serving me. I assured him that I understood men and I was very much a woman, but I didnt expect him to be so verbose as to his opinion of lesbians. I didn't even get to try the food because the service was horrendous. We went here only because it was near the LOEWS theater. The prices seem cheap but the smell and decor was worst than "dive." I live down the street and I find that I only come here when we aren't sure where else to go. I've been twice- once Thanksgiving weekend and once on a VERY cold evening in January. We had a great time both times we went, but I blame the company more so than the bar. The second time, we took over the juke box on a Friday night and staged a bachlorette dance party in the back, much to the enjoyment of the other customers. Standard Irish pub with good bar eats and relatively cheap beer. Stopped in while I was in Central Park and just wanted a dive bar where I wouldn't spend $8 for a bud light. Luckily, I found Malachy's. Had a couple draft beers, the bartender was friendly and even let some guys change the tv to a soccer match they wanted to watch, and the mozzarella sticks complimented the beer well. Two words: Day Drinkers. Happy hours lasts from like 11am to 7pm, so the bar is full of day drinkers. It smells like stale beer and some times there are fruit flies. They pour the worst Guinness in Manhattan. Ten years ago there were rumors that Malachy's flew in their Guinness from Ireland each week. Those days are gone, they don't even do the second part of the pull (without the gas) and they will serve it in any kind of glass (even the Sam Adams glass with the cuts at the bottom - gasp). They also don't have half pints. For $4.75 you get a burger WITH fries - hand-packed meat bought at a store, not from Cisco Systems. The staff is nice, and you can wear whatever you want whenever you want. Where else can you find hipsters, yuppies, plumbers, college kids and octogenarians all hanging out? I don't have a lot to say about Malachy's. It looks like there's a good crowd here, and it looks like a genuinely good place to stop by, should you be in the area. I can't say so much for whoever tended to our group. She was just awful. I don't expect saccharine sweetness when I'm being served, nor do I want you to hover over my table or tell me lame jokes. However, common decency would be nice. Maybe she had a bad day, but our server was pretty unpleasant. To her credit, though, she handled our table very well, and did not rush us out. So yeah, let's chalk it up to a bad day. I was ok with everything in general, but I don't know if this would really pop up on my radar if I needed a drink in the area. I have family nearby, so a friend and I stopped in on a cool Saturday afternoon for a beer and a bite to eat. Pretty much just what I expected - and that was just fine. It's an authentic Dive Bar - with that "dive bar smell" - dive bar service and mostly local dive bar clientele. Not a great selection of beers, but good enough - and it's cold. I had a roast beef sandwich that was pretty good. Service was okay - reasonably competent but not overly friendly - but that's exactly what I expected. Picture an old Irish bar in your head? It might as well be this place. Not a "Disneyland version" of an Irish bar, but a bar with an Irish name and an old-school Irish feel, that is actually owned by - Irishmen. There are places like this all over America - and thank god for that. Not looking for an uppity wine bar, or the hot new brew house where the hipsters all hang out? After 4 people searching their phones for a place to go for cheap food and beer we finally came across Malachys! AND 20 cent wings on Mondays. Cannot get better than that...the wings were meaty and the potato skins were awesome. Home made, melted cheese on top of homemade chili. The crowd inside is definitely interesting, but we were expecting that after reading reviews. Very nice waitress. But do not go if you are looking for a nice pub. Popped in here for a quick drink on Saturday. Haven't been here in 20 years and it smelled like they hadn't cleaned the place since then. Ordered a Rum and Coke. It was pretty small and weak. Definitely tasted watered down. The strangest thing about it was it had a sickly taste to it reminiscent of Pepto Bismol. As I left I remembered why I used to prefer O'Hurley's Irish bar down the block instead next to the Gray's Papaya. read more

My favorite "No Frills" Irish Pub with a flare for old school NY! I think I saw it in a mafia movie or two! Bartenders were super awesome and drinks were done just right! Good local crowd who welcomed me into their conversations and even saw several other service industry folks stopping in for a drink or 6! It's been a day and forever since I've been there, but I LOVE this place. When we make the trek from Brooklyn, we always go on the weekends in the afternoon so that we can be treated to the company of Dorian who is the bartender during that time. The crowd is unique at that time and the conversations are lively. Dorian has great stories! OH...and they have the best Potato Skins around!! Fuck this place. I love a dive bar. I love dimly lit pubs with an easy atmosphere and some great tunes on a jukebox, but I have never had a more awkward experience in my life than when we went in tonight. When we walked in and were ignored we found our own place to sit. THERESA came over and asked if we wanted drinks, two pitchers were ordered. After we had to ask for menus, she tossed them down and abruptly told us the kitchen is closing and we had to "order now". Cheesesteak no onions and chix tender basket with BBQ. GO! Order placed! We were served a cheesesteak WITH onions and tenders with honey mustard. Okay whatever. Ignored, slightly messed up order and zero personality = 10% tip... not a full tip. Then, THEN, THEN!!!!! Malachy's is an old stand by on the West Side. I guess I should say young stand by because I started going there when I was 15. My ten year older cousins report the same thing. That being said, since being of age I have not seen a single reason to go there, it is not charming, and actually does have a smell. They only get 3 stars because they accepted my fake id 12 years ago. It wasn't my picture, wasn't a real id in the first place, and I 'm not even sure it said I was 21! I love me both a good pub and a good dive, so I had high hopes for Malachy's, particularly after seeing that they had Saturday happy hour specials. My boyfriend and I popped in on a sunny Saturday in July with the intention of grabbing a few beers and a late lunch. Unfortunately, we left after a single drink and most likely will not be returning. Upon entry, Malachy's looks like your average neighborhood dive pub -- dim lighting, lots of stuff on the walls, crowded bar and creaky chairs at tables. Most of my favorite establishments fit this mold, so that wasn't my problem; the horrible service is what earned them my solitary star. We went there specifically for the happy hour special, which I believe was something like $4 domestic draughts. We sat down at a table and waited...and waited....and waited for the waitress to come over. Finally, my boyfriend stood up to order a drink at the bar, and it was that moment that our waitress appeared, flung two menus onto our table and ran off again. We raised our eyebrows but decided to take it in stride. As we perused the menu, she stalked back over to our table and asked for our drink orders. We ordered a Bud and a Bud Light draught, and it took at least 10 minutes to get them -- which was strange, since there weren't many people who weren't sitting at the bar. Given this experience, we decided to skip lunch, drink our beer and scram. Which we did, after our waitress mentally calculated our bill, took our $20 and then came back with our change -- which was $6 short, given supposed the Happy Hour price. When we asked her about this, she said, "whoops!" and threw $3 on the table for us. We cut our losses and left. Overall, we really liked the ambiance here, as it was a nice place to duck in out of the hot summer sun and have a cold one. The service, unfortunately, left a lot to be desired. Pretty much an old school bar. Went there tonight after some stellar jazz at Smoke, and got a buyback after 2 drinks. I was tipping $2/per but nevertheless, that's pretty good. Jukebox is OK, sometimes the music is a little harsh compared to the venue, but it's a good place. And during the day, the food is pretty good. It was down pouring rain and my girlfriend and I were in dire need of a drink after shopping around in SoHo for a few hours. We wanted to go to the first place we saw and ALAS!... we stumbled across this lil dive bar. Ummm I know it is often the theme with NY service but our waitress was not the best. Let me rephrase that, she was pretty rude. We asked her if there were drink specials and she looked at us like we were speaking another language. We then informed her we needed a few more minutes and she looked at us like we were the most annoying thing to her day. After she left we did notice drink specials which were written on the board. We then dared to ask her what was in each of the specials and again not the best reaction. At this point in time I was thinking the pouring rain was more inviting than this bar, but we decided to tough it out and go with our usual drink orders. By the second round of drinks she did warm up....errr maybe I cared less since I had a drink down. LOL! I would skip over this place and try something else in the neighborhood. read more

Came here last night after we got into the city. It was super late (around 2am) and we wanted a drink. This is definitely an old school dive bar, super Irish, super LEGIT. The bartender was super sweet, we felt at home. My husband had a Guinness & I had a rum and coke (drink was more rum than coke which is always a plus for me). If you want a hipster, yuppity bar this is not the bar for you. If you're looking for a real NY experience give it a go. read more

Something that really pisses me off about people who review dive bars, is that they act all disappointed if the place smells weird, or their order isn't right, or the food does not meet their fucking TGIFridays fucking standards. Hello? It's a goddamned fucking DIVE BAR. What the hell do you expect? You don't go there to have everything be clean, and seamless, and Zagat-approved. You go there to get fucking drunk, eat fucking disgusting food, and go home. Maybe watch some sports. Isn't it kinda great that there are still places left in the city that are still a little rough around the edges? The hamburgers are $3, what the hell do you expect?? That said, I love it here, because it is totally out of place in this neighborhood. Perhaps at one time it was not. The lady bartender makes a world class bloody mary. The best I've ever had- maybe because it was unexpected. It is the type of place that does not struggle to have character, like so many other awful so-called "Irish pubs" in NY. I went there in the afternoon, looking to recover from a hang over, which I did effortlessly, thanks to their super cheap, super delicious burger and fries. I had the feeling that if I didn't finish my potato skins, that the bartendress would scold me, so I found myself hiding much of what I didn't eat in my napkin. I love this place. The guys that work behind the bar are the nicest people you could ever meet. The regulars are always friendly to people that they just met and anything me or my friends come to this bar we always have a great night. The drinks are very reasonable and the food is good and inexpensive. Its nothing fancy but that is what gives it it's charm. I wouldn't want to change a thing from this great little Irish pub. read more
