Malay restaurant is a Catonese run restaurant trying to put out Malaysian food and some of it is on point and some of it is a miss. First the good. The roti canai and sate are excellent. Best sate I've ever had anywhere. I'd come back for that sate alone and just eat that. We got a curry and tofu noodle dish and char kwey tiow. The shrimp were hammered in the char kwey tiow. There was no sausage in it. And the noodles were greasy. GREASY. It had no wok hey. No smokiness. The tofu & fish cake in the curry was yummy. However, it came on a bed of noodles that were soggy and overcooked and that was pretty much the whole dish. Noodles with a few pieces of tofu skin on top. We had no idea. Neither of these tasted like Malay food. The flavor was wrong. There's the cook in the front grilling the sate. Whatever he's doing, he clearly knows what he's doing. Then there's the cooks int he back making the other stuff. They need to get a proper Malaysian cook back there who knows what they are doing. I was so sad. One of the BEST hole in the wall restaurants in Flushing. Me and my friend went during the afternoon and it was empty. It's a very small restaurant, but the food is very good and authentic. The chicken satay was honestly the best Malaysian chicken satay I've had in NJ and NY. So much flavor and cooked to perfection! The squid with water spinach was out of this world, and it came with so much extra sauce that I was just dipping the achat pickles into it The Hokkien Mee could have been a bit better but it was still good. It's one of those dishes that is a bit more difficult to get right. However, I didn't like the addition of what tasted like liver in it. I was introduced to the Malaysian cuisine not long ago and was brought to this restaurant for the first time by a former friend. When I first walked in I was immediately hit by a sense of comfort. A somewhat small space with families gathered around, enjoying their time together with a bunch of delicious looking dishes that made my empty stomach growl louder than ever. Long story short, the rest of my experience was amazing and it got me HOOKED. So get ready yelpers because this is going to be a long one! A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I decided to come here for our anniversary dinner because he likes to stick to his Korean roots most of the time but I like to have variety, so I try to push him onto new stuff and he simply HAD to come here with me. We entered the space and were directed to our seats. Having had barely anything for the day, we ordered a feast of a half Hainanese chicken, shrimp with cream, beef satay, oil rice, and baby bok choy with garlic sauce. The prices are alright not too expensive but some dishes are priced as "S.P." which if I'm not wrong means seasonal price. The food came after about 15 mins and my boyfriend immediately went for the satay... I had to stop him from eating my share :,) The beef was well seasoned and tender and the satay sauce was the perfect nutty condiment. I love to munch on the cucumbers on the side immediately after I take a bite of the skewer, the freshness of the cucumber pairs well with it all. Moving on to the shrimp with cream, my favorite part. One thing I love in this world is seafood and this place does not disappoint. The shrimps are properly deveined but still have their shell on which gets nice and crispy when fried, like I don't even bother to take it off since it carries so much flavor. The caramelized coconut cream gives it the slightest hint of nuttiness so good that you won't even be mad if it stained your clothes! Next on the list is the hainanese chicken which is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan because it tastes a bit too "chickeny" so I don't have it often but it is incredibly soft and juicy. It goes well with the sweet chili sauce on the side. I haven't had regular white rice in this restaurant because I always get the oil rice. For those who don't know, it's just rice mixed with the oil that the hainanese chicken is cooked in. Sounds simple right? You'll be surprised. The rice is so flavorful that I could have it by itself for a meal (a not so nutritious one) no joke!! The bok choy was pretty tasty, it was soft and the garlic sauce was rightfully garlicky. We were so full we couldn't walk by the time we finished but did not regret it one bit. Gotta note not to go there too late because after we were seated, the restaurant got full pretty quickly and I'm sure they remained full until closing time. Great price wise Def love the no-frills vibe to the place. Had the beef rendang (seasonal price, $27 in March '22) , roti canai, fried pearl noodles, coconut rice, beef chow fun. BEEF RENDANG: good, tender, a little sweet from what I'm used to; I think it was a bit heavy on the coconut but fragrant and def hit the spot. Solid beef rendang, make sure to order the "with rice" version if you don't wanna pay the full price I did. The rice combo is like ~$15 FRIED PEARL NOODLES : Wanted to love this and while I enjoyed it I've def had better; could have been more crispy/stir-fried for longer, and it comes with pork + shrimp which some pieces were a bit dry. But the sauce/flavoring was solid. ROTI CANAI: Warm and fresh! They make a roti that seems to be stretchier/chewier and less flaky/crispy than I've seen elsewhere, which I actually really enjoyed because you get this satisfying chew, subtle sweetness to the dough and the curry was a solid accompaniment. Haha Fortunate enough to be invited by fellow elite Andie (THANK YOU!) to attend a group dinner with other elites and the meal could not have been better (Although The 7 train on this particular evening left a lot to be desired). All the dishes we ordered were various levels of good to great - not one clunker in the bunch! Chicken and Beef Satay w/ peanut sauce was a good dish - I don't usually order satay often preferring to try other dishes. Roti Canai we perhaps under ordered on this, one piece for a table of 7 - I tried a small bite and it was tasty, but would need to try it again to make a more informed assessment. We ordered 2 different poultry dishes Pia Pa Duck and the Hainanese Chicken. Most agreed the duck was awesome - so juicy and flavorful leaving a few surprised they liked it more than the chicken. Duck is a must order. Beef Rendang was delicious and satisfying. The beef could have been a little more tender, but I wasn't complaining. Belchan Shrimp with Okra was one of my top dishes - a relatively simple dish with the shrimp paste having amazing flavor, but the okra was cooked perfectly making this dish shine! Eggplant with Shredded Pork and Salted Fish was another favorite of mine. It is a real comfort food dish and I just loved the way all the flavors came together along with the textures of the pork and eggplant. Mussels Tom Yum Soup was also great with that excellent spicy flavor and nice plump mussels. BBQ Skate Fish was very tender and very delicious - they did a great job with this as well. One of the nice things is that Skate has no bones so its easier to eat, but for the uninitiated the grooved texture might seem a bit strange. Hainanese Rice the chicken fat and salt in this makes it just so damn good. A great bed to offset the slight sweetness and spiciness of many of our dishes, but truly eating a bowl of this on its own would make me giddily happy! All of this deliciousness for $25 a person and the place is BYOB with outstanding service. Really, what is there not to love about Malay Restaurant?
