You are served by friendly, "family " members; not only the owner's family, but children of servers who have been there for years. This is a destination location you only learn about through friends. The place is super cute. Service was great. A few things to note. You have to go down a set of stairs. We had a stroller and had to carry it down. I am not sure how those in wheelchairs can go in? We went to Maltby cafe on a Sunday. The website says Maltby has consistently been voted best breakfast in the PNW. Sadly, we would strongly disagree with that statement. The food came out cold and the eggs were extremely overcooked. The biscuits were very dry and the cinnamon roll was very sad. This poor place. 10-12 years ago, this place was a staple in your diet if you were a Snohomish County kid growing up. The cinnamon rolls, the massive plates of food and the exceptional service. Fast forward to present times and it's just complete and utter dissatisfaction. We used to love it here - their food was always hot, large portions, delicious and service phenomenal. BUT...NOW...it's no longer like the above statement. The last two times we came, April and May it was just 'EH - OK.' They no longer have the Nardone waffle, now it's just a basic four square waffle. The portions are smaller, the biscuits are dry, and service the last two times was less than stellar. Prices are up, a Bloody Mary is $15, for a standard 12 oz glass. I asked what happen, and was told they have a new cook, and it shows and tastes like it as well. We won't be coming back for awhile, hopefully they can go back to the old days of service and outstanding food, until then we'll find another breakfast location. read more

The prices have definitely gone up but you get what you pay for and the portion sizes are worth it. Salmon eggs Benedict is rich and delicious as it is served on a biscuit with lots of hollandaise sauce that will bring you close to finishing that entire plate! It is a large portion so come hungry. I'm so sorry to leave this review. I really used to like this place. First, be warned if you order eggs there is a disclaimer that any time you order eggs you'll need to add 50 cents to a dollar per egg for your order. Let me address this, your prices are already at 20 dollars a plate and up, you'd think for a scramble of veggies and eggs that you wouldn't need to add an up charge for the eggs. I was shocked. Second, I ordered the biscuits and gravy...well like a spritz of gravy. The biscuits were dry and not nearly enough gravy, I could have asked for more, but I was afraid I'd have to pay a fee and the couple next to me had already had to ask for assistance twice before they got help. Third and finally, service. It's chaotic, it's not what it used to be, it's not awful, but it's just meh. I may be an old man for complaining, but your tip choices shouldn't start at 22% on the card reader! It's a turn off. Just add 20% automatically if you wanna be cheap with your basic wage. I have no problem tipping, but to assume they were gonna start at 22%. Is just disappointing. Overall my wife enjoyed her food even though she said it was way too salty. I love Maltby Cafe and its old school country diner feel! It's tradition for us to come once a year around the holidays for brunch. Expect a wait when you come here, but that just shows I'm not the only one who enjoys coming here too! The food and service are both good. Their menu is what you'd expect from an American diner for breakfast/ lunch. During my most recent visit, I got the country style eggs benedict and my husband got the country scramble. Prices are higher, close to $20 for each of our entrees, but the portions are big! We both enjoyed our food, and I had leftovers.. even though I shared my entree with my daughter! That definitely doesn't happen often when I go out for brunch. Expect to have food coma after eating here even if you end up taking some leftovers home ;) Maltby is also known for their huge cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately they were sold out this time we went (which apparently never happens!), but we always bring one home with us since we never save room for dessert. What a great place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, any time really! My dad was visiting and his wonderful son in law and the best friend took him here for a breakfast treat. He raved about it his whole visit and has already put in a request to go again next time he's in town. The husband of mine was so impressed, that a few weeks later he whisked me out of the house early on my day off and treated me to mimosas and breakfast so I could try it out. They have lots of things I'd have loved to try but because of my gluten allergy am limited. They did have gf bread and made me some avocado toast, poached eggs and bacon that were delicious. I also adored that they included a lemon drop with my tea! Felt just like visiting my grandparents as a kid. The place has a great family owned intimacy to it and as we were there on Halloween we got to enjoy some fantastic costumes by the servers which was fun. The potato salad is also very good, with chunks of red potato, and celery. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak with the Maltby bread. My boyfriend loved the gravy on the chicken fried steak. I thought it was a tad too rich. The toast was top notch. I ordered the California scramble with the biscuit. The scramble was delicious, although it was 75% toppings and 25% eggs. The biscuit was flavorless. I liked the potatoes; my boyfriend thought they should be crispy. My boyfriend went rogue and ordered the cinnamon roll, which is big enough to feed a small army. It had a nice hint of orange. Service was remarkable--friendly and expedient. The restaurant was warm and nicely decorated for Christmas. The hype and prices are completely unwarranted. The parking lot is a tiny gravel lot with no other nearby overflow parking. We waited almost 40min for our food order even though we were there before 9am. The egg dishes were fine, but there is an egg surcharge price due to the current macro economic situations. The buttermilk pancakes were really tough because of all the leavening, and didn't have much flavor and needed the maple syrup. The biscuits were dry as heck, and not very tender. As long as you stick to the protein dishes, and the potatoes you should be fine. This is my absolute favorite breakfast restaurant in western Washington. The restaurant is in the basement of a historic building in Maltby and it's always busy. The staff go out of their way to be friendly and fast and take good care of the customers. And the food. The food is portioned for the ambitious and is simply delicious.
