Today was my first time trying Mama Cho's. I got the plate with chicken & pork belly. The meats tasted fine. Marination was decent and they gave a good amount of meat. Who can say no to tacos. After hearing about this place from Lorelei S and Hazel C, I went with some co-works to explore the menu. My favorite items is the spicy pork tacos on the corn tortilla. Corn tortilla holds up better than flour, because of the sauce in each taco. Although the pork is marked as spicy, it's on the mild side, so even people who don't like spicy food can eat them. My second favorite is the chicken taco. Both tacos are flavorful and the meat is juicy. Because of all the sauce, the taco is a bit messy to eat, be sure to eat over your plate!!!! Sorry, no offense to the kalbi taco, but I'm trying to avoid the heartburn here. if you want to have a side, I like the sweet potatos tots, as I am allergic to the Jalapeño cheese tots. If you want another meal, order the fries with the kalbi with guac and salsa, which is huge. I had the burrito once, by my all time favorite here is still the tacos. There is a public bathroom to wash up after all the sauce drips all over arms, and plenty of parking in the two lots. Cute building that looked like it was a converted grocery store and had several other vendors in it. Great way to share the space for small businesses. I think the flavors mesh well very fittingly and even thought i'm not the biggest fan of pickles, the balance of the pickles and the sweet chicken was nice. we also ordered the jalapeño tots and the garlic fries and both were super satisfying! the tots are a unique side worth trying if you're a fan of light spice. overall i think the highlight of my meal was how well the chicken was cooked so i'm putting my money on all the other chicken dishes here as well! read more

My family has ordered the marinated (raw) meat for us to cook at home a few times and I've always enjoyed the flavor. Located at the Lake Chabot public market, this is a nice little eatery and you get some good Korean food. This weekend was the first time I went to purchase dinner to go and was just as satisfied! We got a bi bim bap ($16) which was heavy on veggies and not so much on meat - exactly what I was looking for. Also got 2 KBBQ plates ($21-$25 depending on if you got the meats with additional cost) and a jalapeno cheddar tots with garlic aioli ($6.25). I was surprised how good the jalapeno cheddar tots were, and the garlic aioli was the perfect compliment to it. For the 2 plates I added money to get the short ribs so I was able to get bulgogi beef, LA Kalbi beef short ribs (think the thin short ribs that come with 3-4 bones) , spicy pork and Oakland Kalbi beef short ribs (the individual thick short ribs). For the extra $3.50 for Oakland beef short ribs, we only got 3. Less than I was hoping but the flavor was very good. All the meats were well flavored and perfect cooked. Mama Cho's is located in a building which was formerly a small grocery market. The Chos took this building and converted it into a mini food court featuring Mama Cho's KBBQ, a poke place (POKEATERY), a ramen spot (SHUMI RAMEN), a dessert establishment (MILK & COOKIE BAR), and lastly boba drinks (T4). So my five star rating is really for both Mama Cho's BBQ and the food court as a whole. I'm an avid fan of Asian food in general, so having a local one-stop-shop of varying Asian food is a dream! I ordered the KBBQ plate with upgraded meat, LA kalbi and rib eye bulgogi (~$18); 2 burgers (~$20); the sweet potato tots ($4.25). Also after ordering, I cruised their drink section and found so many delicious and enticing beverages to try. I ended up going with an organic orange mango juice option which reminded of a Nantucket Nectar. Got the hubs a Stumptown cold brew drink. Which brings me to another reason why I absolutely love this place. It's their amazing drink options. Many of them were organic and inside glass bottles (much appreciated by those concerned for the environment and trying to avoid consuming unnecessary plastic particulates). And if you like beer, they have a lot of domestic and import options. I'm most interested in trying some soju next time! Yum! Mama Cho's also offers a butcher counter with raw marinated meats for you to cook up at home. Hands down one of my favorite local spots in the East Bay. I've tried their hot kitchen and their meat counter multiple times and neither have ever disappointed me. For their hot kitchen, my fave go-to is their Kalbi burger -- great bang for your buck and that Kalbi patty can't be beat. It's smokey and slightly sweet with the slightest hint of bulgogi sauce. Super juicy and tender with just the right amount of fluff. The burger is large, but not sloppy. For an extra $2, you can add another patty and for a couple bucks more, you can make it a combo with fries and a drink. Their meat counter is also pretty impressive. I've hosted stay-home KBBQ a few times, and I've ordered my meat here every time. I've tried almost every cut, but but my favorite without a doubt is their Oakland Kalbi. This is one of their more expensive items at $34, but it's sold in 2 lb. packages and the quality is top notch. It's exclusive only at Mama Cho's and trademarked because the cut is created by Papa Cho who's also the owner of C&H Meat Company (I'm not kidding, you can find this on their website). Between the juicy tender cut of meat and the amazing marinade, this is a fam favorite. If Mama Cho and Papa Cho is looking to have a volunteer menu taste tester (or looking to adopt a daughter), I'd be the first to line up. First time eating here and ordered in Yelp. When we got here, the cashier young guy told us our order number was picked up already by a Filipino lady. We told him we didn't have a delivery service just ordered to go. The young man and I presumed the owner had a conversation and then proceeded to tell us they will cook our food again. Was so happy to try this place out because I was hoping it would be yummy and would replace the Korean fusion restaurant on mission that closed due to lack of patronage. That was a stand-alone location versus this place is in an old converted market that has several different vendors with an open seating area for that indoor picnic vibe. This place is also different because it takes up 1/2 of the vending space and includes a little market and a large meat counter. I love the concept and ordered the bulgogi beef cheesesteak, combo plate with spicy pork and bulgogi Beef and a side of jalapeño tater tot's. Unlike other pictures I've seen on Yelp, the meat portions weren't huge but they weren't skimpy either. In the combo you get a scoop of rice some, broccoli, beans sprouts and kimchi. Not bad for about about $10 bucks each for the cheesesteak and the combo plate, altogether with the a drink it came to just under $30 for two. My BIG complaint is that the food is not spicy at all. The spicy pork shouldn't even be called spicy pork and mild Kim chi is also just wrong. My only issue wasn't the actual serviced, but the volume at which the cooks called out order numbers for the food that was ready to pick up. I was super surprised to see that this bbq place was in a public market. My sister and I saw the reviews and thought we'd give it a try. Ordered the rice plate and added 2 servings of bulgogi which was an extra $4. Total for the plate came to $16.95. I could have eaten at a restaurant for that price instead of ordering and scrambling for a seat in the open seating cafeteria style setup. The bulgogi was super salty so it was hard to enjoy the plate as a result. The meat seemed flavorful and marinated well, but then ruined with a gallon of salt or soy sauce on it. The kimchee looked old and tasted old. Sorry, but I have bought a bottle of kimchee from Costco which looked more fresh. Plenty of rice, not much to say about that. This place is a cool cafeteria style building with other restaurants (ramen, poke, ice cream, and boba tea). It's a really nice atmosphere. We got two items: Kalbi Burger: 4/5 - It's a really delicious burger. The meat is well cooked and really flavorful. Wish the lemon garlic aoli that comes with the burger was more flavorful. Potato bun is soft and tastes good. Korean BBQ Burrito with Short Rib: 5/5 - This might be one of the best burrito I ever had in my life. The meat is so flavorful and tender. Came to the public market today without researching the vendors first. Pretty small space, so lunch was this or ramen. I have actually never had a k-taco or burrito before. Yes we live in the land of food trucks - I don't subscribe to lining up and waiting for food. I like my comfort and sanity too much. The name kind of turned me off too, reminiscent of westernized views of Asian cuisine. But the menu looked great and you get to see all the meat they use in the butcher's case, so you know it's fresh and you can purchase more to create your own at home. A burrito and taco were $17 including tax and the short rib upcharges. So much tender, nicely marinated meat! It was not just filler. Love that they have corn tortillas for the tacos and bean choices for the rito. Would like to see a gf tortilla and brown rice. The current tortilla gets a texture and flavor boost from the grilling. Bonus points. I think some may think the food doesn't have enough flavor, but I think it's seasoned well without you having to hose down your mouth after. A corner shopping mart, butcher shop, and restaurant all in one. Friendly staff with those "Oh I need this quick" ingredients stocked in once place. It's clean and friendly and has all the covid precautions. Parking is plentiful and if you have a big group that with various different cravings you can all split up and grab other food that will satisfy your palate. I'm so glad this exist here and makes life so much more pleasant. read more

The bf and I ordered a... Kalbi (beef short ribs) Taco - $4.50 Bulgogi (beef ribeye)Cheesesteak Hoagie - $9.95 Jalapeño Cheddar Tots - $3.75 Took about 15 mins to get the food. The hoagie and tots were really good! It came with like this relish mayo dip. Thought the taco was alright. Not sure what was missing but the flavor was just kind of subtle for me. I ordered the garlic soy Korean fried chicken and my mom got the rice plate with chicken and kalbi beef. The Korean fried chicken was amazing! I wish I got the larger size. It's probably one of the best I've had in a long time. I've had Bon Chon and that's nothing compared to Mama Cho's! My mom's only complaint is that she wishes there was more than one strip of Kalbi beef, she said for the extra $3 there should be at least two strips. read more

I was in the area and was looking for a quick lunch, so I stopped by. Mama Cho's BBQ is located in the Lake Chabot Public Market, so make sure you don't drive past it like I almost did! I ordered the Rice Plate (~$12) which comes with rice, 2 meats, kimchi, broccoli, and bean sprouts. To be honest, the plate is already on the pricier side but to get specific meats, you have to pay more. The only meats included in the price were the chicken and pork. I got the Chicken but the other meat I got was the Beef Bulgogi. This was an additional $2. The meats were the best part of the meal. It went well with the rice which was just standard white rice. The broccoli was fine but the bean sprouts and kimchi didn't seem fresh to me. The kimchi was particularly pungent, but I'm typically not a fan of kimchi, in general, so maybe I should have asked if they could swap it with anything else. Overall, I paid ~$16 for this meal and for an average rice plate like this, it's not worth the money. I don't think I'd come back here. read more

Food is good but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's amazing. Service on the other hand is extremely poor. The guy at the register has ZERO customer service skills. He excels in making you feel unwelcome. He doesn't say anything to you when you walk up to the counter. He just stands there. It's very uncomfortable. And once you've placed your order and paid, he still says NOTHING. No thank you. No nothing. We spend over $100 each visit but after the same treatment today, we're not going back. There are other places where we can get better food, be appreciated for supporting their business, and be welcomed. If you enjoy shitty service, this is the place to go. Three stars for the food.
