We started off with super rich and flavorful apple cider. I ordered the fried catfish (7.25 and comes with eggs, hash browns, and biscuits) which was excellent and the biscuits were ok. But everyone agreed that the hash browns (out of nowhere) are what stole the show. Finally, we were greeted by Mama Dip herself on the way out. I was a little apprehensive after reading the reviews, and having not been here since the passing of Mama Dip. The chitterlings were delicious! Cleaned very well, and did not smell. The collards were good, but the macaroni and cheese needs a lil TLC... maybe a new recipe?? I don't really care for creamy Mac and cheese. I would have to say that I have lived in NC for 20 years. MaMa Dips was a favorite of ours. Our visit last week was not good. Our waitress was great. I wanted cheese in my grits but she seemed to not hear that part of the order. The grits came out without the cheese, the waitress was apologetic and brought back the grits with cheese in them. I received my omelets which was swimming in grease, I couldn't eat it, my stomach was churning. I politely told the waitress that I couldn't eat it and didn't want anything to replace it. I could hear the cook in the back talking loudly about me. She at one point was staring at me and I stared back. This place used to be good. Not anymore. 20 minute wait on Sunday morning, then learned they forgot to write our name down. Waiter was duper nice, but it was an hour before we got our food. Eggs and sausage, hash browns, biscuits. Not difficult. But took five-ever. Biscuits were obviously leftovers or prefab. Ordered a side of gravy for biscuits, and was charged for a gravy biscuit plate. $3.99 for 2 ounces of gravy? Beverages like a cup of coffee were $2.50. No no NONONONONO. This place is the lamest excuse for Southern cooking and hospitality I've experienced in my 20 years of living in the South. The servers and staff cannot be bothered or even crack a smile on their faces. I'm trying to figure out whether this place is a) a front for some psych ward, or b) some Haitian voodoo zombie experiment gone horribly wrong. The only place more strange than this one was a restaurant up in the NC Mountains where I was told I had to wait 45 min. while they went to wake up the cook. Now, I'll forgive the service is the food makes up for it. But the food, if anything, is so atrocious that I wouldn't be surprised if it contains the zombification drug causing the symptoms I mentioned supra. The fried pork chops would deserve 3.5 stars on their own, but the sickeningly vinegary, yes VINEGARY, candied yams (clearly from cans), and the pulverized turnip greens with strange flavors (clearly from cans), and the field peas and corn (no taste whatsoever, as if they had come STRAIGHT OUT OF A CAN) - should be awarded no stars whatsoever. I don't know how Mildred Council (a.k.a. Mama Dip) could let her restaurant slide like this. From what I hear, 10 years ago it was the pantheon of Southern cooking. It's now the gates of Hell for Southern cooking. ENTER AT YOUR OWN DEMISE. Oh yeah, and one meat and three veggies plus iced tea will run you $17 (about 2x what this food, if prepared right, should cost). I've heard of corkage fees in good restaurants, but I never realized that "opening a can, heating up contents, putting it on a plate" fees would run so high... If anything, head a few blocks toward downtown Chapel Hill and eat at Bon's, which is run by one of Mama Dips' daughters. It's not amazing, but at least all of her stuff is fresh, not from cans, with healthier recipes, less expensive, and with a better waitstaff and cleaner surroundings. Not a ringing endorsement, but the Triangle proper is frankly lacking in really good Southern fare. This is country or home cooked food but not soul food. Employees were nice but drinks could have been refilled more often if the waiter paid more attention and wasn't in the corner on his cell. Sweet tea wasn't sweet had to add sweet and low and the catfish was bland...Mac n cheese and green beans were average. Catfish gumbo was excellent though! COLD SIDES AND TERRIBLE SERVICE! My bill was 69.09 for 3 people and 2 of us shared! The chicken was so small we were still hungry, the fried okra was so small it wouldn't even be enough for 1. I didn't want to make a ruckis so I called and spoke to a manager who yelled at me and told me it was my fault! The waitress refused to serve use and told us everytime we needed something that she was busy. We had to get up and go get her to order a desert! When I talked to the manager I asked her to make it right and she said no and wouldn't even apologize for the service and food! I will never eat here again and recommend you save your money! Go to Cracker Barrel for better food, it's cheaper and they know how to treat people! This is sad cause Mama Dips used to be great food and had great service! It's pretty cheap traditional southern food but nothing amazing - definitely didn't live up to all of the awards I saw in the lobby. The selection was great - I wanted to try everything on the menu - actually trying it was a letdown. The best thing I had was a side of yams which I could have eaten a pound of. But my fried chicken wasn't great, the skin was a little dry and honestly I like Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen's chicken better. And my green beans were awful - straight out of a can. I was in the need for some soul food on my way to the airport and Momma Dip's filled the bill. The service was fast and polite no lingering table side or over checking here but you don't feel neglected either. The corn bread was just right, turnip greens were as they should be , the mac 'n cheese had the right amount of crust to cream ratio, the chicken and dumplings were tasty and dumpling rich. To top off the meal I had to go for the coconut custard pie with the most perfectly flaky delicious crust I think I've ever eaten. It's too bad that the food is so good here because I will not be going back again. I met with friends here for lunch and we waited 45 minutes for our food while our drinks sat empty. Then, when we finally got our food, we asked for drink refills and another ten minutes went by with no drinks. I had to eat my whole meal with no drink. I finally went to the hostess to tell her about it and then the server, Evan decided that instead of simply apologizing, that he would come up and argue with me. Then, the manager came out to talk to me and the server continues to walk around me and talk aggressively to me. Even when I went to pay (yes, they still charged me), he kept walking by and mumbling his aggressions about me. It's one thing to give horrible service. It is totally another to argue with me and then run your mouth for the remainder of my visit to be certain I am uncomfortable. It's harassing behavior because I didn't just accept his poor service and keep my mouth shut. Own your poor work. It's the least one can do. I would recommend that if anyone wants to try this restaurant, order your food for pick up if you don't want to sit there and be ignored and then harassed while you pay to be there. read more

Then the food was cold had to be sent back...the chicken was dry...the catfish was suppose to be fillet but it was a whole catfish full of bones but the kicker at the end after paying over 100.00 for a meal that was well horrible I told the manger who basically said "Ole Well"! Had the chicken fried steak, yams, slaw and corn. slaw tasted a lot like marzettis sauce. cornbread was good. co-workers had smothered chicken and the other had porkchops. all plates were cleaned before we left. service could have been a little better. i hate when my tea glass gets to be empty. overall i would say the food was good but not great. may go back another time and try the fried chicken. read more

I was dying to come here since i had heard only good things, and i definitely did not like it, If felt very cafeteria food The service was very pleasant but not outstanding. So we started with the sampler platter and the hush puppies batter was very bland and not crispy at all and the green tomatoes were so extremely over battered. Now, this last time I ate Mama Dip's, the great woman herself sat reading about the Tarheels in the local paper just behind our booth. Listening to her cool drawl talking to her daughters, (many of whom still run the establishment, or cook your vittles,) makes the sweet tea even sweeter. Maybe this was the place to go years ago, but $12.95 for a two-piece chicken dinner with two sides was not only pricey, but I was terribly disappointed in the size of the chicken breast and a very small wing portion. The fried chicken breast was smaller than a thigh and was overdone. The wing was smaller than a single wing you'd get from a wing restaurant. Service was perfectly fine. The restaurant was clean, but at lunch on a Friday, I'd expect more patrons. I'd recommend giving it a miss and going somewhere else in Chapel Hill. read more

I came here for the "chittlins" because there aren't many places in the area that sells them. They were pretty good. Nothing like my grandma's. It came with potato salad, candied yams, and corn bread. I dont have any complaints but my experience was just average. I guess if I wasn't from the south, I would really be impressed with this place. I tasted my husband's chicken and dumplings. It was great and it was a large portion. My waitress was on point and kept my glass full (sweet tea). Oh, and I almost forgot, I ordered sweet potato pie for dessert. It tasted like pumpkin pie, full of spices and not enough sweet potato flavor. TERRIBLE! Ordered 3 chicken dinners, one pork chop dinner and one catfish dinner. We received everyone's meal after extensive wait except for the catfish dinner. The wait staff said it was still frying. No one followed up and everyone finished their meal before the catfish dinner was brought out. The service was terrible and the food was bland. The manager did nothing to rectify the situation. They automatically took 18% gratuity for a waitress that took our order and we never saw her again. I tip 20% normally. I came all the way here from ohio and was recommended to come here. The ribs were absolutely AWFUL they tasted like they were boiled for 2 days and then placed in sauce. The chicken didnt taste like it was even seasoned. The cornbread was hard and awful. After i complained to my server how bad the ribs were the server went back to ask if i could just have chicken. I went out of my way to go to this restaurant. Instead of heading I75 South to Atlanta from Michigan, we headed east through Ohio, West Virginia... just to go to Mama Dip's Kitchen. It was definately worth the trip. We got to see a lot of beautiful scenery too. The chicken was pretty good and the rest of the food, the cobblers, biscuits, grits, battered steaks were mouth watering. The service was wonderful for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A work colleague and I ate here while we were in town for business. We both had the white meat fried chicken. The chicken and cornbread were excellent. I had the squash casserole and green beans both were excellent. My colleague had potato salad and yams, the potato salad was a different preparation and was ok, we both have a couple of other restaurants in our area that we enjoy their potato salad much more. It was a little pricey, coming out to $15 each plus tip for a large piece of fried chicken, 2 sides and cornbread. I may go back to get something different the next time I'm in town but I'm not making a special trip. read more

Where else can you get home cooked southern food? Excellent chicken, so crispy and so tasty. And the mashed potatoes are not like any my mom made... they are the best, with the country gravy. Having been to Mama Dips a few times over the past couple of years, I have to say it seems as though things are "going South" for this Chapel Hill staple. My last two visits there were disappointing. Our visit was during the week just before the dinner rush, although I never did see more than a few tables being filled. Perhaps folks like me, have also been disappointed with recent visits because this place use to be packed, no matter when you would go. First, I ordered tea which tasted very rancid, even with a squirt of lemon. As a tea lover, I just couldn't bear to drink this beverage although I tried. It tasted like it had been sitting out overnight and had that bitter, strange taste. I asked my server if there was any fresh tea available and he stated I was given the freshest they had. So, I got my beverage replaced with a Coke without any hassles. Our server was extremely courteous and attentive, so for that I give them props but when paying 10.00 for a plate of food, it should taste pretty darn good too!! I ordered the fried chicken tenders which tasted much like the ones Hardees is now serving. For my sides, I had mac and cheese and squash casserole. The squash was the vegetable of the day so no doubt, it was the freshest thing they had. It was delicious! My mac and cheese was also good but not outstanding and definitely not very fresh. My kids got chicken fried steak and chicken and dumplings. They seemed to like their food but we were also starving. I tasted of my daughter's pinto beans which I believe were canned, and they were lacking in flavor. I didn't taste the chicken and dumplings but they looked very watery compared to how they use to be. My daughter left them on her plate. They brought out bread with the meal which for us was biscuits and for a southern restaurant, was a BIG disappointment. They were small, dry and cold. Obviously not fresh, in fact it tasted like they may have been at least 1- 2 days old! The least they could have done was warm them. Nothing like the southern biscuits I've had at other places that wasn't marketing themselves as a southern restaurant. I think the canned biscuits you make at home would have been a step up in the taste department. They should really be ashamed for not throwing away those old biscuits and providing hot, fresh ones for their customers. I wonder if you only get that at breakfast? My chicken was good but for 8.99, I got only 3 tenders so a bit of a rip off there. I asked about dessert and specifically if any of it was made that day. I was told no, everything was made a few days ago but the banana pudding was recommended so I ordered it. It was good, just like a southern banana pudding should taste but for 4.95, I though it was a bit overpriced. My final thoughts on Mama Dips is that sadly, it seems the quality has gone downhill over the years. When Mama was there overseeing the operation of the restaurant, I the food was served fresh, hot and definitely delicious. Portions were also larger. Now, they are definitely trying to salvage profits by serving food that is not fresh and there is a definite difference. I don't mind spending money on food it it's worthy of the price paid but I was very disappointed in my meal today. They should always have fresh hot biscuits in a southern restaurant. I think I would have paid less for better food if we had dined at Cracker Barrel! read more
