This was my goto pizza place when I first moved to Cambridge. I then moved away from the delivery zone but now that I am back I have discovered they have the best veggie subs. They actually call them cheese subs cause they give you a ton of cheese. The first time I made the mistake and ordered extra cheese which was a bit much. But as is, is perfect. I order with foodler which is good because the default veggie options limit what I would normally order which is an overflow of different veggies. Just having a few and some good cheese, and the best hots, equals a perfect sub. The prices are as cheap as subway and so much better. The pizza is still really good, though now I tend to go for the subs here. read more

A couple weeks ago two of Jessi's friends from college (a married couple) were visiting us here in Somerville. Jessi and her girlfriend went out to go shopping, leaving us guys to fend for ourselves before meeting them in the North End for dinner. Not knowing how else to pass the time we decided to have our own little pub crawl from Porter Square to Quincy Market. So we headed down Beacon St. towards Boston stopping at every bar on the way. When we got to Abbey Lounge there was a guy who had just come from Mama Gina's with two pies and was giving away slices to everyone in the bar. We availed ourselves and discovered that they were surprisingly good. This was my first Mama Gina's experience. Then, the other night, we decided to order pizza. So I chose Mama Gina's again. This time, sadly, our pizza was a little too cold when it go to us and so not all that good. But I still hold out hope! I'll need to go there and get a fresh pie before I can give my final review, but based on my experience so far this is a damned good pizza place, especially for Boston. Great Calzones. Great Pizza, great Sandwiches. Mama Gina's has everything you could possibly want in a cornerstone Italian store. As I said above, the Pizza, Calzones and Sandwiches are excellent. The service is super speedy and it is in a great and convenient location. Most of all Mama Gina's has a nice combination of creativity and delicious food. I just moved down the road from this place. I've noticed this establishment before, but never made it part of my pizza rotation. However, since I was close, surrounded by boxes, without food, and hungry I decided to give them a try. What an outstanding thin crust pizza! Dough is fresh, sauce was nice, cheese was real, roni was roni. I am glad I live right near them because I think I found my new ace of the rotation. I'd order this pizza for friends. read more

A-OK is a good assessment of Mama Gina's. I grew up eating Papa Gino's, so I was drawn to Papa's spouse (probably no relation) after biking through Somerville. It is a typical and very casual pizza place on a street corner in the heart of Union Square. There are plastic letter menu-signs above the counter and you can see the oven. I ordered two slices of Sicilian (cheese and pepperoni), and I was glad I went for Sicilian over the traditional thin crust. The crust of the sicilian was a good mix of fluffy, buttery, and crunchy that you don't see to often in your local pizza place. The thin crust is also not your average greek-style, but instead seems more italian and of higher-quality and less greasy than competitors in the area. Now that I live in the area, I will probably call upon Mama Gina's for my pizza runs as well as delivery in the future. I iniatially planned to try an adjacent Union Sq. pizza place, but once I saw a "we serve Indian food" sign in their window - I was skeptical and thus I kept walking on. I was happy that I found Mama Gina's, and will return sometime soon. read more

Mama Gina's is a basic pizza/sub shop close to my motorcycle dealership... so whenever i am in Union Square... I am sure to stop in for a sub. Their subs are excellent... great bread... and they LISTEN to your order (saying 'extra hots' will actually get you extra hots). the staff was a little put off by me- maybe because i asked how their day was going- but were nice enough. 5 stars for the delivery guys.2 stars for the guy answering the phone taking orders. Foods pretty decent depending on what you get. The guy on the phone is SUPER rude!!! Last night I ordered a sub and when I receivedit, it had unwanted toppings. Not a huge deal normally I'd pick off the unwanted toppings but I decided to call them back. (not the first time this has happend). So when I told the person on the phone what happend he proceeded to tell me it was MY fault....Excuse me? Mistakes happen I understand that. But this guy acted as if he was insulted personally or something. It happens. No need to place blame. Sending out a new sub would have been just fine. And then when we told him we won't be ordering from them again he said "we will see". Well buddy I can assure you we will not be returning and we order from here at least 3 times or more a week. So make sure you repeat your order 5 times to the guy on the phone to make sure it's correct. So incase there's an issue he can't tell you it's your fault! read more

Everyone commented on how good the pizzas were and when I called they offered me a special that I didn't know they had. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area. read more

Since we've discovered Mama Gina's, my roommates and I have ordered from there weekly. I usually get the grilled chicken wrap. Here's the thing: they can make anything your little heart desires. The first time we ordered, we didn't even look at a menu... i get my grilled chicken wrap just the way I want :) We've been ordering by phone for delivery and last week went into the restaurant to pick it up. It's your typical greasy joint... The point is, the food is delicious, but the decor leaves a lot to be desired - so take it to go or get it delivered! read more

This place seriously has it all. From pasta, pizza, wings, sandwiches and salads... There is something anyone would like. Honestly, my impression of places that do so many different types of foods is that they will all be really OK. I went with a salad and wings and both were very good! The only thing to keep in mind is the seating is limited and there are no bathrooms available. Which is disturbingly common for this area anyway. Good prices too. read more

I rarely turn down pizza, but Mama Gina's was so greasy and bland that I had zero desire for a second slice. The cheese layer somehow managed to be both absurdly thick and heavy, and completely flavorless. Instead of being gooey, the cheese had an unappealing, curd-like texture, which you can kind of see in others' photos. Similarly, the tomato sauce and crust didn't add anything. Eating this pizza was a bizarre sensory experience, because although my eyes and nose were telling me "Pizza, yum!", my mouth was just... static. Maybe toppings usually mask the disappointing texture and flavor? I still give Mama Gina's 2 stars because it's relatively cheap (at around $11 for a large cheese pizza) and not outright offensive. I'll have to try Beacon Street Pizza (formerly Dial-a-Pizza)'s equally priced product for a decisive verdict on cheap, bad Somerville pizza. read more

First dinner in my new place in Union Sq - Mama Gina's delivery. Worked up a big appetite after a long day of painting. Placed the order around 8:30PM Friday night and had the delivery in just under a half hour. Pizza was good. I liked the crust - it was thinner than an average pizza, but still just enough thickness to keep it chewy. Also had the perfect proportions of sauce and cheese. The fried raviolis were also pretty good, but the ones at the top of the container were a little cold and hard while the ones at the bottom were still hot and gooey. They are probably best enjoyed right out of the fryer and not through delivery. All in all, as Yelp says when you click 3 stars, first impression of Mama Gina's was "A-OK" read more

This place is great! Me and Mo were lost walking through Union Sq, and we need a rest in the summer of 2008. While shopping for her new Cambridge residence, we found Mama Gina's. It reminded me of pizzeria's in NY and NJ growing up. A hot whole in the wall with friendly, down to earth ppl. 1.50 for a cheese slice 2.00 for a one topping slice Yesterday, we got a maui pizza. So we figure just get the med for 11 bucks [ham and pine]. mmmm the guy says itll take 10 mins so we went around the corner for a beer. we come back and I try to pay but I have no cash. I pay with card and ask, " where's the tip line"? He says, " no worries". When we got home, we noticed that the med is the same as a lg at a pizza hut and the maui came with bacon, a definite hit as me and mo killed the whole thing. read more

Mama Gina's is my go to place for subs. My fiance LOVES their Italian sub. When you ask for everything plus the hots, you get everything. I order steak and cheeses from here. If they ask you if you want everything, they also mean everything, (ie lettuce, tomato, hots, etc) not just steak bomb ingredients, which are peppers mushroom & onions. It kills me to write this because I love to support my neighborhood small businesses, and the staff at this place is always friendly. But ... the food has been consistently terrible every time I've tried it, and I really did give it more than one second chance. If my order wasn't swimming in grease, it was stone cold. If it wasn't bland, it was burn-your-taste-buds-dead overspicy. So cheap isn't cheap if what you get is inedible and you end up going someplace else the same night. read more

The small calzone was huge. I got 3 meals out of it. The subs are also really good and very reasonably priced. (most sub toppings are included in the price) They even have fried ravioli. I haven't seen those on menus for a while, so that was a nice surprise. Foodler requires an order of $10 to check out, and Mama Gina's charges $1.50 for delivery, so the price can get up there, but I've never had a bad meal here, so I think it's worth it. Location: It's not perfect by any means, but it's in Union with a number of other greats places making it an easy quick lunch. Plus it's abot five minutes from my place. 2. Mama Gina's was close to work, so i decided to try with a co-worker. The method that i use to determine whether or not a restaurant makes a good pizza is simple: I get half cheese, and half-topping. That way i get a full experience of how they are because most any place can make a decent cheese pizza. If they cant, then Yelp is there to tell the Masses. I ordered a half-mushroom, half-cheese pizza from them, and it was made faster than they stated. The interior was larger than most places and was very clean. The staff was good with the orders and curtious. The menu was good sized, and the prices were good. Overall, the pizza was really very good, and the topping actually improved the taste of the pizza. My co-worker and I usually look for places that we can buy pizzas for people for events or birthdays, and this is now the default place for us. Definitely a spot to try for new-to-the-area people, or something quick for the alien movie you just rented. read more

They charged me way more than was on the menu. I left feeling scammed by this place and then they chastised me and said I didn't order the pizza correctly, even though outside it just says that a large cheese pizza is 7.95 on mondays and tuesdays. I assumed that when I ordered a pizza they would charge that price. Instead They charged me 23.90 for two large pizzas on a Tuesday. Finally - a great place to order takeout! We ordered delivery tonight from Mama Gina's, and ordered through Grubhub. We ordered a calzone, a turkey wrap, and gingerale. When I purchased the food around 725, I received a text that the food would arrive some time between 825 and 835, which it did! I was very excited to open the box and see my calzone, cooked to perfection. I was, however, very disappointed to see only buffalo sauce on the side, and not also the ranch that I had requested. I promptly called Mama Gina's to ask about my ranch and turns out there was a misread on the order due to the way you have to order through Grubhub. The man who answered apologized and did offer to send the delivery driver back with ranch - since we did pay for delivery/tip I did ask him to do that, since I did not want the calzone without the sauce. I am so pleased by the customer service we received, we will definitely be returning customers (again and again)! I really really like their pizza. But, last night, I bit into a bolt and chipped my tooth. Probably a freak occurrence, and I'm going to go in to personally encourage them to do a little more quality control. However, if anything like this happens again, I assure you Yelpers, I will be here full force on the anti-Gina's front. NEVER AGAIN! Although we have ordered from there many times before without any issues, tonight's service was horrible! Not only did we have to wait over two hours for the delivery but when we tried to call after one hour, nobody answered - for almost a half hour! At this point we are all quite hungry and when they finally answered they had the nerve to give us attitude for inquiring about our food. This is a great pizza/sub shop. Great subs and salads. The sicilian has a nice crust and the regular pies are terrific. Highly recommend the chicken caesar salad, lots of nice chicken with a good sauce. Nothing worse than a mediocre salad. Very dependable and an important establishment in the neighborhood. I went to Mama Gina's last night and I was blown away by the fast service I got. The guy in the front was polite and efficient even though we were a big group of friends. He took care of us like it was no big deal. I got the Pomodoro pizza which I loved and my friends got different subs, chicken wings and some drinks.
