Let me just start with saying this was the most delicious piece of cornbread I've ever experienced in my life. And that's saying something as I would never purposefully choose an edge piece. On top of that I was surprised to find that spaghetti comes as a side! It reminded me of cafeteria spaghetti, but not the bad kind you groan about when you see it on the menu, the kind that has you running to the cafeteria to beat everyone else. The spicy cabbage is just that, SPICY. I was only able to eat a few bites, but even under all that spice the flavor was excellent. The catfish strips were hot and tender. They even threw in an extra or two. Now the server, he was amazing. He greeted us promptly and went above and beyond. I have not had such a positive experience with a server at any restaurant I've been to in a long time. I didn't catch his name, but he was brilliant. The restaurant was clean, food was fresh, and plenty of seating. I'm very excited to visit here again! We've been here twice, once dining in and once as an order ahead take-out. Both times we have been incredibly impressed by the atmosphere, service, and food. They have the best classic southern soul food we've had the pleasure of enjoying in the area. And the music..low, warm Motown drifting out the door like an invitation you'd be a fool to refuse. That's how you find Mama G's. Parking was a minor hassle. Worth it. Inside, the soul of the place hits you immediately. Family portraits line the walls:real people, real smiles, real history. The woman at the counter greets you not like a customer, but like a nephew who's finally come home for the holiday. That's not trained hospitality. That's heritage. We waited fifteen minutes. Got seated by the bathroom with a view of the road. Not ideal. But you know what? I didn't care. Because the smell coming out of that kitchen was already forgiving every small inconvenience. The menu reads like a dare. Everything "spiced correctly," they boast. No timidity here. So I went big. The Stuffed Turkey Leg: a smoked behemoth of a thing, piled high with greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, all crowned with cornbread crumbs. Thanksgiving on a plate. A chaotic, glorious, soulful mess. The collard greens hit first. Earthy, slow-cooked, righteous. Then the mac and cheese, creamy and clinging to the turkey meat like it belonged there. The yams? Sweet, soft, perfect punctuation. And the spices??; they danced. Bold but not brutal. I could handle it. My four-year-old, however, disagreed. The mac was "too spicy" for her young tongue. Fair criticism. Take the kid to a park next time. This food is for grown-ups! My fiancée went with the Fried Wings. Hand-breaded, Mama G's own seasoning, fresh from the fryer. The kind of fry that crackles when you bite in..extra crispy on the outside, impossibly tender within. She needed dipping sauce to cool the heat. She didn't complain once. In a city full of bland, safe restaurant food, she was grateful for something that actually tasted alive. The staff? Warm. Genuine. Our waitress heard our compliments and brought us a free side of spicy cabbage just to show off what else the kitchen could do. That's confidence. That's family. Mama G's is not a restaurant. Back to Mama G's a second time - and it's just good as good can be. The Salisbury steak is really really good. The mushroom gravy is so flavorful. Fried pork chop is another great choice. Really good outside fry on the chop. The is cooked nice and still juicy. Meatloaf is a really good taste. A pretty dense meatloaf, that can seem a bit dryer texture. Make no mistake, it's still really good. If you like fried chicken livers...they are cooked good and a good fry taste. All the sides have been so very good. The okra, cheesy potatoes, cabbage, corn bread and the green beans. They are delivering that great southern style sides. Oh, did I say they have good sized portions? Came here tonight with a few of my buddies while on the Hot Rod Power tour. Our server Micah was awesome and the food was AMAZING!!!! We were a party of 6 and were taken care of very well and we were all very satisfied. The food came out fresh and piping hot and very well seasoned. We ordered way too much food because we wanted to try everything and the portions were generous. Our favorites were the meatloaf, fried catfish, nachos with chicken, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and hush puppies. My daughters were really excited about the stuffed turkey leg and the rabbit, but the turkey leg turned out to be so salty they couldn't finish it and they said the rabbit leg just tasted like bland fried chicken. The collard greens were also too salty for any of us to finish. I could not do more than one bite. We also tried the Salisbury steak and it was okay - like eating a hamburger patty with gravy. My husband said the chips were good but could have been crispier. Our server Hawk was probably the best part of our experience, super friendly and engaging. My daughter wanted to try Mama G's for dinner so off we went. It's street parking and there's a free parking lot not far from the restaurant. The dining room is large and there's are 2 different sections. The location receives a ton of natural light which is wonderful. There is definitely a home cooking, soul food vibe with greens, sweet potatoes, spicy cabbage and cornbread on the menu. Between our party of 4 we had all of that. My mom tried the Get Right burger which she enjoyed. Me, my daughter and granddaughter selected fish which was very good. This restaurant right here is a Gem . The owner is a sweet talkative gem . She came to our table and chatted with us . Our waiter Maki was the greatest and very knowledgeable about the food as well . Maki was very helpful and talkative as well. He was very funny and engaging as well . The collard green queso was delicious and the soul power was tasty as well it could have had a bit more of alcohol punch to it but hey I liked it nevertheless. Came here looking for Black owned restaurants in SPFLD and saw one was open for breakfast. Stopped in an it was . The grits weren't watery and runny - they actually made them the southern way with broth. The scrambled eggs weren't diluted with milk. The chicken fried chicken was actually seasoned. I've been so disappointed in the Springfield food scene but this was the first place that I actually enjoyed the food. The vibes were cool too. MAMA G is no joke. This place is unreal the food is so fresh practically made to order. We sampled almost everything and all of it was unbelievably delicious. The PEACH COBBLER AND BANANA PUDDING are a must have.
