I've eaten here twice, and I can definitely see myself becoming a regular. My favorite dish is the Hainanese chicken. Even though it is a half portion, the portion is enough to feed 3 people. The chicken comes with 2 sauces, one ginger and one hot. They complement the chicken well. The fragrant rice that accompanies the dish is absolutely tasty as well. I can eat this rice on its own. Service is friendly. Seating is limited. There are about 12 tables. There will definitely be a wait during peak lunch hours. Parking is plenty. The perfectly hearty weekend meal. Was highly recommended by a friend and surely lived up to it's expectations. Small hole in a wall kinda restaurant in an Asian outlet shopping center. The menu is huge with offerings for all kinda of dietary needs. From seafood to chicken and beef and lots of veggie options too. We ordered the Seafood noodle soup as an entree but it was enough to easily be shared among two. A little on the spicy side, though not over powering. But if that's not your cup of tea then request for a milder version. Very filling, with lots of shrimp, scallops and fish pieces in it. The addition of lady finger was great. The gravy is not too broothy, rather on the creamier side. Our second entree was Kari Ayam. A very filling typical Malaysian chicken curry dish. This one hit the spot for me. The perfect blend of spices and the potatoes made this dish the perfect one for me. I would highly recommend getting the chicken with bone option rather than boneless. Overall a great eatery when in the mood for some Malaysian food in a casual setting. Don't think they serve alcohol but when the food is so delicious why not devote all your appetite to just the food :) Can't wait for our return and try out their other menu offerings. read more

Rota Canai - small portion but light, fluffy and excellent. Solid dipping sauce. I think one order per person is required. Hainanese chicken - tender and tasty. The two accompanying dipping sauces add complexity, turning a fairly good dish into a great one. But the chicken could have been cooked a bit more - just my preference. Also, I don't prefer chopped, bone-in meats. Spicy tofu - the winner for the meal, although we asked for no pork on top. Perfectly prepared silky tofu cubes immersed in a complex, spicy sauce. Prompt service, we were the only customers on an early weekday visit. The restaurant offers no alcohol and none of the non-alcoholic beverages called to me. This is the biggest weakness of the restaurant. Ambiance is a bit lacking. It's a box with crappy music playing. The online menu is more descriptive than the one you see in the restaurant, and that can be a problem for vegetarians. For example, I knew my wife would be interested in the chef's special spicy tofu but I only learned that it wasn't vegetarian by reading Yelp reviews. The online menu clearly states that is has minced pork on top. That would have been a deal breaker requiring the dish to be rejected when served. They really need to upgrade the restaurant menu. It would be good to list vegetarian items specifically. In general, there aren't enough vegetarian dishes, or even vegetable dishes. We liked our spicy tofu and I liked the Hainanese chicken, but we both stated that it would be good to have something green on the side. There are vegetable dishes available but not many. I've dined at Mamak a couple of times and both times, every table in the tiny restaurant was packed. Located a few doors down from Sweet Hut in the Asian Square shopping center on Buford Highway, in a location that's notorious for failed restaurants, sits Mamak, with its bright lighting and signature neon orange sign. On my first occasion, my girlfriend and I ordered two dishes to share. My pick was a popular Chinese dish, the salt & pepper squid. My girlfriend chose the Kari vegetables, which is just mixed vegetables in a Malaysian curry sauce served in a clay pot. Both dishes were very good and excellently flavored. The squid was lightly fried and although a bit greasy, was very good. The vegetables turned out to be my favorite, as they still had a crisp and the delicious curry really brought out the entire dish. On my second visit, I was able to try many more dishes: the roti canai, curry puff pastry, Hokkien Mee, Chow Kway Teow, Kari fish head, and Hainanese Chicken. My favorite dishes, which I would suggest as must-tries are the Hainanese chicken and the curry puff pastry. The chicken is light and delicious, laid out beautifully and served with two sauces, one spicy, one fresh garlic. The curry puffs were cooked perfectly: crispy with a fall-apart shell and hot and steamy on the inside. I found the two noodle dishes we tried to be very similar in taste, but they are worth a shot ordering. Also, consuming the fish head is quite an adventure and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for a date, however, you must order this for the cultural experience at least once! Overall, the food is delicious and it is very obvious that the owners and servers work collaboratively and work hard to appease all their patrons. Appetizer -Fried Wings: (fried with a taste of ginger. comes with sweet chili sauce) -Roti Canai: (delicious curry soup with chunks of potato and chicken. comes with Indian flatbread to dip) Entrees -Rendang Beef: This dish is very bold. It's more of an Indonesian dish which is simmered in coconut milk and spices. This explains the flavorful taste. Very good with rice and I'm glad slices of cucumbers are served. Refreshing for your palate. -Hainanese Chicken: More of a Chinese influenced dish since it originated from Hainan Province in Southern China. This dish is a very simple dish with lots of flavor. It's boiled usually in chicken broth and becomes very tender. The chicken is served over light soy sauce and sliced cucumbers. It comes with 2 dipping sauce: mixed hot sauce and a ginger-oil type sauce. Rice was served with the entrees. More of a course meal type presentation. The rice is more of a sticky rice. It was sweeter than regular steamed white rice. Overall, very flavorful and delicious. Will definitely be back to try more items on the menu. This is probably the best Malaysian restaurant in the states. I mean it still is nowhere near as amazing as the real thing. But, I was pretty happy with what I've tried here. I came with three others here. The laksa is pretty good. Curry puffs were tasty but not real spicy. I wish they had these more often. I don't know if they don't make them anymore but I hope they keep making them! So yummy! Also, the barley drink is quite refreshing and good but I think they stopped making that completely. It's as if everything I like I can't get! Maybe I should just go back to malaysia! I would say the hainanese chicken was pretty decent as well! We will be back to try other dishes as well. I ordered the roti canai and the Chow Kway Teow. I love their roti canai so much. This time I ordered it, it was extremely salty for some reason but still very good. The Chow Kway Teow was great too! My favorite dish for wok fried flat noodles. It comes with shrimp and squid. My sister ordered the mango chicken and sambal okra. You can find Mamak Malaysian Cuisine at 5150 Buford Hwy, Ste A-170, Doraville, GA 30340 in the Asian Square shopping center anchored by the Asian Supermarket. Mamak is on the right-side when viewing the Supermarket from the street, just a few doors down from the Doraville Sweet Hut location on the right-side corner. There's plenty of parking in the main market lot or if you're lucky you'll be able to park out front of the restaurant. I've now eaten at Mamak on several occasions for both lunch and dinner and like the food here quite a bit. The interior is a bit sparse with light green walls and nice, industrial finishes. The place is a bit small so best to hit it during non-peak times - otherwise you may have to wait (the wait is worth it). I consider the cuisine more a fusion of Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai and Chinese which seems to be common in most restaurants that originate in Malaysia or Indonesia as those seem to be melting pots of the surrounding countries. I think that most people who like Thai food will like the food here - it's very clean (more like Vietnamese) and relies on the actual flavors of the food rather than on heavy sauces. There's also a distinctly local take on turmeric that delves a bit more into Indian cuisine flavors - if you like all that I've described, you'll love Mamak. If there's something in there you don't like, don't worry, as there's enough variation that you'll be able to find something delicious that's to your liking (the cool thing about fusion in my opinion). I've enjoyed every dish I've tried at Mamak - from the samosa-like fried meat and/or veggie pies to the delicious seafood dishes. I love the curries and noodle dishes as well - lots of interesting flavors and textures. * Roti Canai - I've had this before (at Thai Spice specifically) and it's very Indian style, your basic roti served with a curry sauce for dipping. I think this is the best version I've had with very distinct flavors. * Curry Puff Pastry - this is basically a samosa only using puff-pastry (it's the fried-pies I referenced above) - very interesting made this way with lots more emphasis on the container than typical. * Papaya Salad - this is an awesome version of the green papaya salad with a bit more fish-sauce and slightly spicier than I've had elsewhere. * Curry Laksa - Coconut milk curry with chicken, potato, cilantro - this is delicious and one of those signature dishes that combines Malay and China flavors. * Sambal Shrimp - Shrimp with sweet peppers, onion and okra in homemade sambal - slightly spicy and awesome. * Hainese Chicken - Another classic dish, soft chicken served on pasta. * Kari Ayam - chicken curry with potatoes - delicious. * Mamak Tofu - fried tofu, shrimp, pork, egg and gravy - delicious and saucy, great over rice. Service here is very good but the place is small and very busy so keep that in mind. They serve Malaysian Ice Coffee here which is worth trying (sweet with lots of condensed milk). Mamak has become one of my new favorite restaurants in Atlanta, and my favorite Malaysian restaurant to date! Even my mom who was born and raised in Penang fell in love with this place!! The food was quick, flavorful, inexpensive, authentic, and delicious! We ordered Roti Canai, Satay Skewers, Curry Laksa, and Char Kway Teow. Everything was loved by the table, but the stand outs to me were the Roti Canai and Char Kway Teow. The curry with the "roti" or naan bread was warm, comforting, and so fluffy. The perfect combination! Would definitely recommend ordering more roti. The noodles in the Char Kway Teow were cooked and seasoned perfectly in a huge portion. 10/10 would get this again! The curry laksa fell short for me amidst the hype. My mom mentioned that it tasted similar to a white curry pack of bagged ramen we have at home, but it still was decent! The Satay Skewers were also great too, but we preferred this dish at a rival Malaysian restaurant, Penang. Overall, everything was delicious, the noodles and roti/curry just rose to the top. This is a kind of hole in the wall place. It's the most authentic Malaysian food you can find in Atlanta, but that isn't actually saying much. The flavors are fine but having lived in Malaysia for five years and being of Malaysian descent it definitely doesn't compare to the street food, it names itself after. If I try to see it as Americanized Malaysian food, however, the flavors aren't bad. The prices are a little bit steep in my opinion, but as a rule of thumb, I don't appreciate anywhere that charges me extra for rice. Also, if you are ordering a rice dish, I advise you to bite the bullet and pay the extra for the chicken rice. It's much more fragrant and flavorful. The Hainanese chicken, on the other hand, does not have any flavor outside of the soy sauce they drown it in. I know I'm being critical. I bring my friends here who have never had real Malaysian food, and they love it. read more

This is probably my favorite Malaysian place in town I've been at least 8 times in the past year alone. While it's not 100% Malay (some hints of Chinese/Indian fusions) the food is pretty authentic. The food comes out super quickly so I would recommend ordering starters and then ordering your main course after you get your starters. It's insane how quick the food comes out. The largest party they can fit is probably eight, maybe 10? They don't take reservations but have the Yelp waitlist option. You can also try calling and see if they will be nice enough to add you on the waitlist :). My favorite dishes are the roti canai, salt & pepper shrimp, mee goreng (with shrimp) and curry laksa. And don't forget to order the fresh coconut. I can't give this place a five because the chicken tastes funny to me (in the curry laksa) and they don't serve dessert. read more

We've ate here multiple times over the past few years and I feel like this place has some pros and cons. First off, we sat down and staff was incredibly congenial. They usually five their customers a tall glass jug full of water for customers to fill their own water. However, the first thing that catches my eye is the nasty black gunk on the cap of the water jug. That was mold. Sort of disgusted a little, I barely took sips from my water because I just didn't want to inhale mold into my system. Who doesn't? That could probably explain the 81 on the restaurant's health report. Then, we ordered our food and it came super quickly. We had lemongrass chicken and the Hainanese chicken and it okay. Lemongrass chicken was a little too sweet but tender and Hainanese chicken was soft and tender but sort of bland. Chow Kway Teow was also ordered and it was super tasty. You could taste the char and smokiness from the wok and the shrimps were plump and juicy. Overall, it was a pretty okay experience. read more

Came here a few times now, and every time, I know exactly what I want. The Hainese chicken is the best and the only way to go. Its not a very complex dish to make, but it's flavors are delicious. It is pretty much jsut steamed chicken, but they put the soysauce and oil over it, and on top of that they had extra dipping sauce too. Very tender and flavorful. When I sat in Mamak with my brother and sister in law, I couldn't help but hum to myself, "I've got a bunch of coconuts...big one small one..." Hahaha because almost every table had one! If you have never drank out of a fresh coconut, it is a must try! It even comes with a spoon to scoop out the coconut meat. Funny thing is, pure raw coconut water doesn't really taste like the "coconut flavors" people are usually used to. My brother ordered the Hainese Chicken, I have no clue how to spell it! iPhone tells me my spelling is wrong, but it's also suggesting to me that the correct spelling is "Haines." But we also came to Buford Highway tonight specifically because we wanted to go to BH Farmers Market. So yea, we definitely stopped by here. The Roti Canai ($3.95) was so crispy and hot. The dipping sauce that it comes with is A+. Really good, and really cheap. I expected a bigger portion, but it wasn't a deal breaker. It was enough considering we got two more entrees to share. The Chow Kway Teow ($9.25) was good and flavorful. The squid was great (I love well-sauteed squid!), and the shrimp was definitely well cooked and the best part. However, this dish is also the reason I deducted a star. This dish is cooked with shrimp right?... Well, our CKT literally had 3 pieces of shrimp. I had 2 before I realized my bf only had just 1 piece. We looked in the noodles for more, but no. Just 3 pieces. They really skimped out - we were disappointed by this. The mamak tofu ($10.95) was my faaavorite. The fried tofu was good, so was the shrimp, but that SAUCE. That sauce was so delicious. I spooned so much of it over my rice. I could swim in it. I seriously really enjoyed it a lot. The menu says it has pork, but I didn't realize that. Maybe it was just really well chopped or something? Or maybe it was pork fat mixed in with the gravy. Either way, the dish was still really delicious. Overall, great food. We were in and out pretty quickly. And after tax and tip, we left paying less than $30. Solid. read more

Usually good food but everytime we order to go something is wrong. We paid for extra satay sauce and it was $3.50 and got ripped off. This is the extra sauce we got for 2 orders of satay. Not gonna lie, I had no idea Malaysian food sounded so delicious until I started reading the Crazy Rich Asians books (no judgement!) so I was pretty excited by the time I finally made my way to Mamak. The only unfortunate part of the experience was that there were only 2 of us eating so we capped our order at 3 items (and still had leftovers). We got the roti canai (plus an extra roti), seafood laksa, and seafood chow kway teow. Their rotis are delicious - crispy and buttery, perfect to sop up the sauce. The seafood laksa was also delicious, better than a lot of other coconut based curry soups, which I tend to not love, and I recommend it even though it stained a brand new sweater I was wearing for the first time! Last, in order but not flavor, is the char kway teow - a fantastic blend of wide noodles, sauteed with eggs, shrimp, some squid (I think), a whole lot of sauce, and some fragrant veggies. It's perfectly comforting in its carby savoriness and would probably hit the spot after a night out. I can't wait to come back to try their Hainanese chicken as well as some of the other options I saw on the menu but had no space for :/ read more

Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in the Atlanta area. Every dish ive had from there has been 95 % a hit. My favorite is the stewed brisket and the beef rendang. Me and my husband have been coming to Mamak since we moved to Atlanta 6 years ago. At first we were very impressed that we finally found Malaysian cuisine and the food there was pretty good. But recently we began to feel the quality of food has declined on numbers of occasions. The most recent one was the Hainanese chicken has sold out at 5pm on a Sunday so we had to order something else. Sambal okra was out also. The replacements were a big disappointment! The lemon grass chicken was oily and dried. The green bean was old and chewy. It costs $13.00. We didn't eat it after we tried for couple bites. The only thing consistent was the seafood flat rice noodle. We don't know if we should be back, maybe not for a long while. read more

Mamak is one of my buford highway favorites. Mamaks foods are just so satisfying. Everything I've had have been so good and flavorful.
