The food here is delicious. No doubt this is some authentic Malaysian and Chinese. Every bite is full of flavor. Prices are reasonable with around 12 dollars per plate. The Hainanese chicken was my favorite dish and the rice it comes with is absolutely amazing. Seating space is limited and if you come here at peak hours, expect to wait upwards to an hour for a seat. Overall, their lunch specials are definitely an amazing deal. What did initially put me off was the hurried feeling I got from the staff. I finally tried Mamak ...I am not very familiar with Malaysian food but ordered based on yelp recommendations. I ordered the curry laksa noodle soup with spareribs- so delicious and flavorful! The curry soup has coconut milk base, I think so it was creamy and balanced the slightly sweet red curry very well. The plump noodles soaked up the soup flavor, so while it got a bit soggy at the end, it didn't stop me from finding that last noodle bit in the soup to devour. The spareribs meat were slow cooked so they were tender and fell apart to the touch...so delicious (but watch out for the bones!). The soup does have large pieces of potato as well, while pretty tasty, it does leave some slightly gritty potato mush at the bottom of the bowl. All in all, this noodle soup is one of THE best noodle soups in Atlanta. I also tried the Hainanese chicken, which I've had before at different restaurants (and my chef dad makes this very well). I wasn't too impressed- the chicken was overlooked and lacked the true Hainanese fragrant chicken flavor that is supposed to infuse into the rice. I do love ginger scallion oil that the chicken traditionally comes with...maybe I caught them on a bad day? Very attentive service, which is rare for a casual Asian restaurant on Buford Highway. Decor is also very nice...this would be a good place to bring your non-adventurous friends if you don't want to scare them with some of the more hole-in-the-wall places. Asian Square's parking lot is a giant mess of one way aisles and hilly, to boot...it's also getting worst as more businesses open up in what was once empty storefronts. The service is quick and the servers are typically the same folks that I have seen (+ one super nice "uncle" that is so so helpful). I'm a big fan of Mamak, even though my knowledgeable friend told me it's not that authentic. You can't go wrong with the most popular dishes. We tried Roti Canai, and Hainanese Chicken Rice, some tofu dish and silverfish. Roti Canai and Hainanese Chicken Rice are to die for, no wonder they are most popular ones. Pretty sure I did not eat Roti Canai right, but the soup is still so good, with some other veggies inside. Hainanese Chicken rice is like rice with real chicken broth. It was juicy and tasty, bring rice to a different level. Tofu and Silverfish is a little bit salty and oily, but also flavorful. The place is clean, since it's newly opened. Wow. So I went to Mamak again on Friday with a friend. I got the Roti as an appetizer, which comes with curry dipping sauce. As I am eating the roti, I notice there's a chunk of meat (chicken) in the curry sauce next to the potato. I am a vegan. I asked one of the employees if this sauce typically comes with meat and she says "no, we can just take it out." Taking meat out of something doesn't fix the fact that there was meat in there to begin with. I told her that in the kindest way possible. Thinking I was getting a replacement after she said the chicken was a mistake, she takes the sauce back to the kitchen and just brings me back the same sauce I had before. I could tell that all she did was remove the chicken! That's crazy. And just plain unprofessional! People can get sick this way. I didn't eat it. If there's meat in something, then tell me it's not vegan-friendly. I will live. There's no reason to lie about it. read more

My husband and I Visited this restaurant for some Malaysian food, today.We ordered beef redang, lemon grass chicken and chaw Kway Teow. We ordered to go. The guy at the register taking orders was rude, cold and unfriendly. He has no customer service skills whatsoever. The food was over priced but we purchased regardless. The beef redang was $18 and was too salty. The lemon grass chicken was also very salty and dry. The chaw kway teow had only 3 shrimps in it, yes only three yet it was not a cheap dish. Do yourself a favor and take your business to other better Malaysian restaurants in the area. We shall not be back. read more

My co-worker from Indonesia recommended this place and I am thankful she did. Though this place is on the smaller size the food made it worth it! I was though hoping the inside looked like the image they had on thier website - in actuality it's pretty generic. I had the app Roti Canai (crispy Indian flatbread w. curry dipping sauce) - this is my al time fav - I will order it every time. My friend and I went to Mamak last night for dinner (7PM on a Monday night). We had a the Roti Canai with extra flatbread and it was very good. The sauce seemed a little thin, but maybe it's supposed to be like that. We shared the Chow Kway Teow and the Black Pepper Seafood Combo. I had read that a lot of people love the Chow Kway Teow, but I thought it was a little bland personally. Yummy and comforting, but slightly bland...good comfort food though. The Black Pepper Seafood Combo, on the other hand, was amazing! Very flavorful - not too peppery but a perfect blend of sweet and sour. This is my favorite place on Buford hwy and here are the reason. First the food is solid, authentic, flavorful and delicious. Honestly anything on the menu is amazing I think I've order literally ordered everything. Here are a few, hainan chicken, chicken rice, chow gwai tao, black pepper seafood, laksa noodles, curry vegetable noodles. Second, the speed to eat here is faster than driving through and literally 5 mins later you dishes are hot and steaming hot of the kitchen reminds me of how you'd eat in Asia. The kari fish head is their signature item and comes with a big bowl of rice covered in banana leaf. I would definitely love to go back. Went back to Mamak for the second time. Love, just love the Malay flavors. Tried new things last night. For an appetizer we (wife & I) share the chicken Satay. Good, fresh and tasty, but not as good as the Roti Canai, which we had the previous time. For the main course my wife had the Black Pepper Seafood Combo, which was outstanding. Full of deep flavors. I had the Salt & Pepper Calamari, which was excellent, if a bit over salted. We share the Fresh Garlic Romaine Lettuce. Another winner. We had enough to take leftovers home. After my first taste, I fell in love. I've heard so much about this place and have wanted to try it for a while now. This place has such great flavor in their food, and the staff members are friendly and eager to help guests decide what to order. I ordered the Curry Laksa with Yong Tau Foo (tofu & vegetables stuffed with fish & shrimp). It was incredible. The coconut curry broth had some spice in it that was both comforting and invigorating. It came with fairly thick egg noodles, stuffed eggplant, and stuffed pepper. I was truly impressed. This is probably one of the top 5 best restaurants in the city. If you live a little ways away, it is worth the drive. This has become a regular spot for me and my dad to grab lunch at and for good reason. The Kari Ayam, Curry Laksa, Roti Canai, Chef Special Fish Fillet, Papaya Salad, Lemongrass Chicken, and Mamak Chicken are the highlights of the menu. I have had all of these on multiple occasions and they have all been consistently incredible. Before coming here I had never had Malaysian food, and now I'm just in love. I truly have never had a bad meal here or brought anyone who did not absolutely LOVE this place. Servers are wonderful, atmosphere is casual but cozy, and parking is easy. I have seen people be rude or belligerent and the staff doesn't even blink an eye. They are always professional, friendly, and helpful. If anyone from the restaurant is reading this, thank you for doing what you do! You have made this place is an absolute treasure! I don't know how the spices in the food are so fresh or how the servers stay so friendly through the busy lunch rush but they get it done. Nothing but loyalty and love for Mamak. read more

Just phenomenal authentic Malaysian food. The black pepper seafood combo is their best dish. We come all the time and often have to order more than one. The hokkien me is also delicious and the pork bits are fried to perfection. The beef stew, salt and pepper squid, roti canai and rendang beef have all been favorites. Some of the dishes are a little stranger (can't remember the names but the eggplant stuffed with fish, walnut shrimp and the noodles with shrimp were both very bland and not worth ordering). So I've eaten at Mamak a few times and blogged about it on my personal website. This post will definitely be updated throughout the next year. This trip we had: -curry yong tau fu noodles (hand tossed) -satay tofu ------- Curry Yong Tau Fu Noodles: Back in Asia, I would almost never get the curry version of this as I prefer the clear soup version much better, or the one with the SE Asian version of hoisin sauce. However, yong tau fu or rather, fish-cake stuffed vegetables and bean curd, is so hard to find here, I really wanted to try it. It is served with curry sauce on white flat rice noodles (hor fun). PROS -mad filling: tons of noodles, tons of curry gravy -good quantity of yong tau fu: I'd prefer a little more truthfully -able to share CONS -too much noodle -not enough yong tau fu: this is probably because there is way too much noodle. I'd recommend cutting back on the noodle and adding 2 to 3 more pieces of the yong tau fu truthfully. -------- Satay Tofu: So some places will serve this differently as in they have larger pieces of deep fried tofu that are sliced in the middle. Here they stuffed steamed or blanched bean sprouts. The peanut sauce is then drizzled over the stuffed tofu. Here at Mamak they serve the tofu cut in strips on top of the bean sprouts. PROS -good flavor: the peanut sauce is pretty tasty but a tad bit on the sweet side CONS -too small to share for an appetizer -not enough tofu: my guess is that by cutting it up into strips, you can essentially put in LESS tofu than what you would use in triangular form. Truth be told, if I stacked up all the little strips of tofu, I doubt they would make up two squares like the other Malaysian restaurants I've eaten at. For $7, I don't know if I would get it again. Driving through Buford Highway, my fiancé and I wanted to check out something new. We were really excited to try out Mamak which is a small restaurant in the same shopping plaza as SweetHut Bakery. The place was pretty packed on a Sunday night but this place was really small. They had a good amount of options on their menu. I ordered the salt and pepper squid and my fiancé ordered the Spare Ribs Curry Laska. They were both big portions so we definitely had some leftovers. Both of the meals were quite tasty. With the food that we had, I still couldn't really give this place higher than 3 stars. The service that they provided were awful and poor manners. No one checked on us the whole time we were there after they have taken our order. While we were still eating, this girl just put the check on the table without saying anything. It took them awhile to give us a to go box. The only time we saw our waiter again was when our card was on the check and he still didn't follow up on how our food was. After that experience, I'd say it's definitely not worth going back to. read more

Papaya salad seems to be very popular here since they always run out whenever we order. Roti Canai here always come out hot and fresh, probably the best I've ever had. Small but busy restaurant. I went in with four friends and ordered Roti Canai, Chow Kway Teow, Curry Laksa, Salt and pepper Squid and Rendang Beef. Definitely enough portion for four and we ended up packing some left over. To add to this, Roti Canai is just to get you start so not a big portion but other meals were big enough. My favorite was Curry Laksa and I think we'll pass the Salt and pepper Squid and try something else. Hainan chicken is a must have and the rice accompanied with the chicken is glazed with chicken flavor oil and juice. I've always seen this place in the plaza but never got the chance to try it out. It's on the same side as Sweet Hut and it is a small restaurant. We came in on a weekday and it was already busy for dinner time. They have large chalk boards that display a list of their popular malaysian dishes. As we were looking at the menu, the place started to get packed and a crowd was waiting outside the restaurant. We ordered their popular appetizer, Roti and curry. Now, I like roti and when it came out, it's only one piece. Certainly not enough for 3 people who like Roti. It was expensive too for $6-$7. That was probably the only disappointing part of the restaurant. Our waitress was very helpful in explaining the dishes for us. We ordered their famous noodle dish that looked similar to chinese cho fun, fried rice, and this delicious shrimp dish. We devoured as much as we could and had some leftovers. It was plenty for 3 people. I would say it's reasonably priced for the amount of food you're getting. The service was good and you already get a jug of water at the table so you don't have to wait on anyone to fill your glass for a long time. When we finished, you just go up to the front and pay. Mamak..!!! Mamak!! I cannot live without you!! I already wrote a review about this place but I felt like I had to update. I used to come to this place once a week. I am not coming to this place as often but their food is still rocking!!! I think this is the best Malaysian place in USA!!!^inf This is my reasoning.. there are huge population in Atlanta and there are so many Malaysian restaurants here than other big cities. This place is the best Malaysian place in without a doubt so I think this place is likely to be the best in USA.(Sure.. my logic isn't too reasonable and my professors at Georgia Tech won't be proud. These are awesome dishes that you must try! 1) Rengdang Beef: if you are new to Malaysian food and you eat beef, you should try this. 2) Sambal okra: this is my personal favorite dish. Normally, I eat a lot of veggie dishes and this dish is sooo tasty! Because of this dish(and along with Malaysian dishes), sambal is number one sauce to go. I will eat a shoe if it has sambal on it. Lol 3) Hainanese chicken: normally I will always choose duck over chicken but I love this dish because you get chicken rice with it. If you haven't tried this, you have to go to Mamak now!! I don't even like rice normally. 4) Kari fish head: yea I get it. The name isn't too appetizing but you have to try it. Meat is hard to eat because of bones but the best part is their soup. Very tasty! It's also loaded with lots of veggies 5) Eggplant: this is really good.( I know.. I keep repeating myself) their eggplant isn't too greasy comparing to other eggplant dish from other Asian restaurants. I don't know what they put it there. It just so good. Maybe they put crack. Lol If you haven't been here, you gotta try this place out. Please note that they space is pretty small and you may need to wait sometimes. Also, the biggest group you can sit with is probably 7-8.
