I recently visited this cute French coffee shop during my visit to DC. I came across on Instagram and was not disappointed. As soon as I walked in it was very busy and crowded inside. Almost every table was taken. There was a line to order but only about 2-3 people ahead of me. I loved the decor and aesthetic of the inside, it gives very French vibes. The cashiers were not too friendly but the bussers were quick cleaning tables and the expos were also friendly when taking your food and beverage to the table. Just had a delicious brunch at maman. The restaurant decor is super cute and the food was scrumptious! We had the Papa's Breakfast Bowl, the Belgian waffles and the Overnight Oats and all were really good. The star of the show was definitely the breakfast bowl though. This Maman is a great location in Penn Quarter on the busy corner of H and 9th NW. The ambiance is French cozy and with pretty dishware and solid rustic furniture. The food is more American-ish sandwiches and bowls, with fun pastries and egg dishes, although most of the kids I have brought here for lunch didn't like it as much as the adults. Warning - finding a table here most of the time can be like trying to find overhead space in a sold out airplane - really stressful and bringing out the worst aggressive behavior in people. Maybe Maman needs to add a reservation system for limited tables. Best to stop in here when it is more empty. read more

Maman is not somewhere I'd recommend. It feels like a bakery that has expanded the menu to include lunch fare. The coffee and pastries are good. The lunch fare not so much. I chose the minestrone soup. The flavor was reasonable but the soup was thin and desperately needed more beans to feel satisfying. I also chose the avocado tartine. Not something I would suggest. The guacamole was completely without personality, almost completely tasteless. I ordered and enjoyed a blueberry scone with goat cheese. It is most and flavorful with both sweet and savory in one. The chai tea was very good according to my wife. My cappuccino was fair, the coffee isn't really good. The vibe here is upbeat and friendly. There are lots of people on their computers doing work. There's nice music playing and it's bright and airy. So if you're here for the coffee and pastries and need a place to plant yourself, it's reasonable. But don't come for the food. read more

So happy we happened upon this spot during our quick visit to DC! I have always loved Sloane Tea and it is difficult to find in the US, so I was very excited to have a big cup of the jasmine mist green tea as an afternoon pick me up alongside a dessert that was absurdly delightful. The English biscuit was certainly ok--passing grade, but not moist and buttery as it should be, and the quantity of butter was rather puny (especially given that one pays an extra dollar for it. Frankly, they should have the option of clotted cream rather than (only) butter...perhaps it shows that I just returned from 1.5 months in London :-) The cappucino was alright, but not particularly foamy. Randomly picked this cafe since it was closer to museums and was SO HAPPY I DID! The pastries are gorgeous, super fresh (I had the strawberry rhubarb croissant bar, literally 10/10 no exaggeration). Cortado was excellent, super smooth and beautiful art! Also got the build your own omelette and it came so well seasoned, the greens were dressed very nicely. As a career barista I really really appreciate what they're doing here. All the workers are so nice and helpful! Currently drinking an iced matcha with the strawberry rhubarb syrup, love. This branch is located near the Gallery pl. and Chinatown metro station. Maman has a great selection of breakfast and brunch items in addition to their cakes and pastries. Food can get quite pricey at $17 for the salad and $5+ for the specialty coffees, but the portion sizes are large and the food yummy that your stomach will be satisfied and you'll still have plenty leftover to take home. I regret going here every time. The lunch is the worst time to go. On multiple occasions I ordered a tomato soup to-go on my lunch break and ended up waiting 20-30 mins for something that's probably already made. Coffee is average and over priced. The vegan coffee cake or vegan crumb cakes is always raw in the middle and I've had some undercooked quiches. I feel bad because the staff is so nice but they're probably the slowest restaurant on the neighborhood. Don't go if you are in a hurry.
