They served me a sandwich on a piece of wood and stabbed a knife so far into the piece of wood that it was near impossible to take out. Pulling on the knife took the entire "plate" with it. Being a recent transplant to the DC area, I am yet to find a coffee shop that truly impresses me outside of Tatte. Maman was impressive with some unique coffee blends along with some tasty treats. I went here with my girlfriend and we had a grand time with exploring the surrounding area. I highly recommend checking out this coffee shop, especially if you get any of the sweet treats. What a cute classy cafe! Enjoy lovely French tunes in this florally decorated cafe as well as delicious pastries and drinks. I love that every item was labeled with common allergens, and there were plenty of vegan options (croissant, carrot cake, zucchini bread, chai chocolate chip cookie). They even had samples of their classic cookie available to try. I got the carrot cake (about $6 including tax) which was very floral in flavor and on the sweeter side. What a nice little cafe with a French influence. 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon and a strong flow of business and it was handled wonderfully. I ordered a club because it's always a safe order. What a wonderful surprise! Toasted French bread with a red pepper aioli. Crunchy & yummy! We also tried a cream brûlée croissant pastry full of a vanilla cream. A must try. Blueberry, goat cheese and thyme scone is good and I'd get this one again. It was very delicious as you taste blueberries sweetness then the dough itself was well mixed and soft with goat cheese. Cheddar and scallion scone was good too but it might be not everyone's first choice. I enjoy the taste of scallion and cheddar together and it was a nice change for a savory scone. Would I get this? Probably not. Chocolate and nut cookie was so good. You might like it. It's soft but little crunchy around edge. Good balance of chocolate, cookie, and nuts! I'm a fan of this cookie!! I'd get this again! Latte - disappointing and not as strong espresso in one cup, and it was very milky in ratio of a latte. I've had a better cup of latte somewhere else. The overnight oats and latte were both beautiful and quite tasty. While all the pastries were good, the pastries included in the assortment are the more basic ones, so I wish I had gotten some of the more interesting pastries to try. I recently visited this cute French coffee shop during my visit to DC. I came across on Instagram and was not disappointed. As soon as I walked in it was very busy and crowded inside. Almost every table was taken. There was a line to order but only about 2-3 people ahead of me. I loved the decor and aesthetic of the inside, it gives very French vibes. The cashiers were not too friendly but the bussers were quick cleaning tables and the expos were also friendly when taking your food and beverage to the table. Overall I had a great experience and would definitely be back when visiting DC. read more

Mediocre downtown-adjacent DC café even by downtown DC café standards. While the ambiance is excellent and the service good, the food left much to be desired. I was at an event and tried the chocolate-dipped madeleine, a cream tart, a mini chocolate croissant, and the egg and cheese quiche. The quiche had no taste, the croissant tasted like it was taken straight our of a package and wasn't buttery, the fruit tart had two berries on it with flavorless cream, and the madeleine also needed more flavor. I also got a black coffee which needed more robustness (although it did have a lot of caffeine). I would recommend going to another place downtown if you are looking for pastries or breakfast/lunch. read more

Review is for my visit on Thursday 1/11/24. I see a lot of these locations popping up in DC. The Location is a good place to work remote or for business meetings in the City Center area. But that's just about it. Everything is over priced. A cup of coffee here is more expensive than Starbucks, less tasty and less strong. You will spend close to $8+ for a small to medium cup. Food is over priced and every item there's an up charge. For example, biscuit is close to $4, but to add jelly that's another $2.50. I could go eat at the Conrad "Eustary Restaurant" (across the street) for breakfast, view overlooking city center and pay way less. AND the jelly is free with their crossisants. Coffee is cheaper and service is top notch there. The Barista here are rude, slow and try to up charge for everything. read more

Some friends and I stopped by after our first option for breakfast was no longer an option on a bustling Saturday morning. I will say that I've frequented their sister location near Union market (which is clearly superior) many times before so I was shocked by the service and the quality of food at this location. Clearly, when you first arrive you can tell that the location is busy, however after waiting for 5 minutes at the door we later could see that they were understaffed and clearly in the weeds. After searching for an empty table and finding none in this smaller location we realized that the only option was to slowly encroach on a table which we thought would be leaving soon. To our delight we only had to wait 10 minutes for this to happen. However, after sitting we noticed that no one was cleaning the dirty tables let alone sanitizing them. After waiting minutes for this to happen I took it upon myself to ask one of the wait staff to buss the table (to which he looked very confused) and later had to ask him to actually sanitize the table because apparently this isn't an expectation. After looking at the menu we settle for the Katie's chicken sandwich and Rose steak sandwich and a few pastries. When my friends food arrived their items looked appealing, however when my food arrived I was disappointed that my Roses sandwich looked like it had the remaining thin trimmings (no more than 3oz and I'm being generous saying that) for the flank steak instead of the actual flank steak. It being luke warm and in dire need of more of the tahini sauce also didn't help. I was also disappointed that their mixed green salad had clearly seen better days that was tossed in some balsamic dressing. The pastries although visually appealing could either used some warmth or they clearly weren't made the same day as I had a difficult time enjoying the seemingly stale kouign amann. read more

Love this little cafe. The coffee here is perfection, I love how many simple variations they have as well as their own signature/seasonal ones. They have a great selection of tea as well. The baked goods look heavenly but make sure to also look at a menu for foods not on display! The service is always quick and kind! I love the soft warm greetings and watching the baristas is always fun. They even don't mind the intrusion of a camera or conversation here and there. The ambiance is delicious. Odd, yes, but true. It's warm, bright, and cozy. It feels almost like summer inside (not because it's hot it's just the vibe) and it's never too loud. It's a solid option for fresh salads and quality tea. We added hot water to the tea 3 times and it continued to be flavorful. I expect to pay a bit more like what you would expect for a high end cafe. Also did the gluten free ham and cheese which was delicious. Servers are fabulously kind and patient, but definitely understaffed as a sandwich and salad took almost an hour to get.... I wouldn't order a lot to go that needs to be made if you're in a rush until they're fully staffed. Gorgeous interior and wonderful cutlery. Tasted great, a little less filling then a normal bagel lox just due to size, but well balanced and not too little or too much cream cheese. Elisa's breakfast bowl- similar to a Greek salad. Favorite thing to try, it was light, filling, big portion. Breakfast bowl- this dish was very filling. With potatoes, bacon, and avocado. The least favorite dish that we tried. Portion was big, but it was just a lot of potatoes and a lot of aioli on top. So very heavy and there wasn't anything to really break up the flavors. read more

This Maman is a great location in Penn Quarter on the busy corner of H and 9th NW. The ambiance is French cozy and with pretty dishware and solid rustic furniture. The food is more American-ish sandwiches and bowls, with fun pastries and egg dishes, although most of the kids I have brought here for lunch didn't like it as much as the adults. Warning - finding a table here most of the time can be like trying to find overhead space in a sold out airplane - really stressful and bringing out the worst aggressive behavior in people. Maybe Maman needs to add a reservation system for limited tables. Best to stop in here when it is more empty. read more
