Their aesthetic is adorable! From the coffee cups to the decor, it's all so charming. It felt a bit cramped inside, though, since the tables were pretty close together. I enjoyed the maman breakfast sandwich - the avocado was creamy and the brioche bun was soft, however the candied bacon's sweetness was a tad overpowering (and I have a sweet tooth). The service wasn't the friendliest, especially when I asked a polite question. Still, I would come back to try their yummy looking pastries!
I love the variety of options on their menu! I stopped by for a very quick treat. The service was great & I loved the coffee! Can't wait to come back, sit down & give this place another try. I ordered: Sesame Tahini Latte w oatmilk -- 8/10 Vegan Zucchini -- 5/10 not that great, you could definitely make a better version at home. It was also really small & not worth the price. I should have gotten a different vegan treat.
I was in DC for the weekend and had heard great things about maman! My boyfriend picked up pastries, so my review is solely based on the taste and presentation. I do think their cafes are cute, though. The pastries were not good. I always thought maman was an upscale pastry experience, but now I see they were parading as that while offering stale, cold, and bland foods. The martha stewart potato tart had a sour herbaceous taste to it. The croissant was stale and didn't have buttery, crisp layers I was expecting. The scone was the best pastry, but still not impressive. I would return for their coffee, but certainly will not order any food again.
Went to get coffee in the afternoon around one thirtyish with a friend continues to be super packed and loud, especially on a cherry blossom week with lots of tourists lots of families and lots of office workers packed into the space. The one thing about this location is that the busing service leaves a little bit to be desired. The table chairs are often left with crumbs and are not wiped down thoroughly for the next guest. I understand it gets busy but when I watch, they often quickly just swipe a few things off the table and don't pay much attention to actually making the place clean and neat
What a cute place! Maman is charming. It's part upscale Starbucks, part bakery, part Harrod's tea time. It's located across the street from Carnegie Library, The fresh dishes are wonderful. I had the grilled cheese. It is delicious and not oily. My friend had quiche & a salad. You can serve yourself a bottle of water to save trips to the filling station. After you order, an employee brings food to the table. This location gets crowded. Visit early.
Went here for brunch after a morning at the Shakespeare Theatre and was not disappointed. Maman's offerings are unfailingly fresh, fragrant, and delicious. Additionally, their coffee is GOOD - strong, not bitter and aromatic. I almost always have Maman's breakfast sandwich because it has everything- egg, bacon, avocado and a lovely soft brioche bun. My son had the steak sandwich which has a very tasty chimmichurri sauce on it and my husband had the ratatouille which he says was good but would be better with some bacon or sausage (disclaimer: he always thinks meatless dishes would be better with meat!) We also had a pear cardamom turnover which was absolutely divine! Sugar encrusted flaky deliciousness! So good I forgot to take a picture of it. The restaurant was extremely packed so we had to hover as another group was getting up to leave - that's my one complaint with Maman- the "will we find a table" stress!! The cashier was pleasant and efficient, as were the busboys in clearing the table after our successful hovering endeavors!! As to be expected, it's noisy when it's full, but the restaurant is full of light and so charmingly decorated that I didn't mind the decibel levels.
I have always wanted to come here. I came from the Smithsonian and it was raining. I made it ten minutes before close. The staff were so friendly and I had a great experience. I got a fleur de sel latte and a chocolate chip cookie. It was amazing. I bought 4 cookies to take home to California, one for someone special, one for me, and one for each of the kids. They put it in a to go food container for me so that they would be protected in my suitcase. The first person had one last night and is a chocolate chip cookie connoisseur and enjoyed it. I really liked the decor and the atmosphere. I cannot wait to come back and try more.
Mamannn why can't you be in California? We would love such an aesthetic, regal cafe like this!! All of the baked goods are laid out in front of you, looking incredibly appetizing. The interior of the cafe is gorgeous, I could see myself spending from open to close of the cafe immersed in a book. I went to Maman two days in a row over my trip in DC just for their baked goods and the lavender hot chocolate. The hot chocolate is fragrant, with a lavender aftertaste. It's rich and creamy, a perfect sweet treat during the snow season in DC. My boyfriend and I ordered two treats, the cranberry croissant and the chocolate pie. Both absolutely annihilated in our stomachs in couple of minutes. The croissant was buttery and flaky, balanced by the tartness of the cranberry. Despite all the baked goods sitting out, it retained its freshness. The chocolate pie was similar to a whoopie pie, but rather than marshmallow, it's a sweet vanilla bean fluff that is addicting! The exterior was crunchy on the outside and soft the deeper you bite into it.
Loved the decor in this place and how nice the staff was as well. I got the Nutella brownie and chai latte. The chai latte was flavorful, better than most chai lattes which are pretty light. the Nutella brownie tasted delicious and paired well with the chai latte. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I would come back to try their matcha selections!!
I really like this location of Maman. Really pleasant and nice atmosphere in the back room. I like their festive feeling plates etc. I really enjoyed their vegan sesame- chocolate cookies for a dessert in Gallery Pl-Chinatown area. I also liked their vegan pumpkin spice carrot cake topped with pumpkin seeds for breakfast. It's counter service and the staff members were nice. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! Maman has a lot to like, except for the crowds. At 11:30 on Thursday morning, the place was packed. There's a window shelf of pastries and fine desserts, all counter service which I appreciate. I had trouble finding a seat and awkwardly went around looking. Finally one opened which I snagged. The Avocado Tartine is a solid 7/10. It is beautiful to look at but reminds me of an uncle who does too much at a party. Pickled onions, halved tomatoes, sea salt, pepitas, and chili flakes are on the side with colorful radishes on top. Plainly eaten, it tastes boring but with all the fixings it takes on much more flavor. Just takes a while to perfect the ratio! (Also, I am probably biased against thinner toasts. I like a nice generous hunk.) The plain croissant was a solid 10/10. Crisp on the outside, pillowy soft inside. Many top tier croissants often rely on heaps of butter which make them heavy. This was neither greasy nor ovetly buttered, two pluses in my book. Overall recommend for charming ambiance and pastries.
Beautiful cafe at the heart of DC. Stopped by after seeing the name pop up on must visit cafe articles. Got a hazelnut latte (seasonal), matcha latte and a hot chocolate. Hot chocolate was truly like a hot chocolate and not watered down swiss miss, thank god. Coffee was decent but nothing mind-blowing. Kitchen sink cookie was amazing! On hindsight I wish I tried their kouign aman, it looked good in the display! The coffee cups and cutlery were beautiful! A pretty cafe to stop by! Nice to walk around the City Center after coffee too.

Came here to catch up with a friend but a bit disappointed with the service and some of the food. I admit, interior is nice. Flowers and all. Super cute chairs, tables, cutlery and decor. However it gets extremely busy and full. Might be difficult to get a seat/table. I went on a Friday afternoon and had to wait a bit. My friend's breakfast sandwich came and she wanted to wait for my food to arrive for us to eat. It took TWENTY minutes for my sandwich to come out so we were just waiting while her sandwich grew cold. Kind of absurd in my opinion. Nonetheless, when my steak sandwich appeared I was disappointed with how dry and lackluster it was. The sandwich was around $18 bucks but it wasn't as flavorful as it could have been and the filling was just mid. Desserts seem solid though. Great coffee, friendly service, super music playlist and incredible pastries are the top reasons to go to Maman. After a disappointing experience the prior morning at nearby Tatte bakery, we knew we wanted to go somewhere else and Maman was nearby and looked good. I'm so glad we went because it was a real treat. Everything looked so appetizing it was hard to limit our choices, but we selected Gingerbread Croissant Cube, Orange Pistachio Olive Oil Tea Cake and Cinnamon Bun Kouign Amann. You may notice a theme that everything is very crossaint-coded with layers of flaky pastry inhabiting most of the baked goods. At first I wasn't crazy about the cinnamon bun, but it grew on me. A couple of the outer layers were a little tough but the inside was amazing. I liked the gingerbread cube although I would have loved a little more filling. The pistachio tea cake was the super star of the bunch....I love me an olive oil cake and if you add orange and pistachio flavors, plus an amazing pistachio cream, then you've got a winner. I am just glad I don't live closer to one of these places because I'd be here eating too much. Definitely recommend coming here for your pastry desires. read more

Just not a good experience. I tried stopping into this bakery cafe and stood in line for a bit, to find it not moving at all, so I came back later. There was still a line and it still moved at a glacial pace. When I finally got to the front, I realized this was because one person was taking orders and then stopping to pull pastries and things. I hope I'm not blowing anybody's mind when I suggest that maybe for a busy downtown kind of place you could hire separate people to take orders and to fulfill them. Setting that aside, the cherry blossom special they had advertised outside their shop they didn't actually have; at the very peak of the season no less. Not cool. my alternative drink was a tea with some London Fog-like foam on top, which was a little weird but was fine. The mouthwatering Nutella beignet delivered about the flavor you'd expect looking at it. However, I also observed some dubious customer service with some parents who were unhappy that their child's bathroom accident wasn't handled well. This place is one of several NY to DC transplant brands, and if you asked an AI to write up the essence of New York, it would probably come up with an experience like this: some decadent finery marred but uncaring service and a lack of cleanliness. Maybe this place can do better on another day and I may find myself in one of their other locations, but they're going to have to do better to get my business. read more

So if you are looking for a spot like that, this would be a good place to consider. There is a lower and upper level, so plenty of space. This is a very beautiful full service cafe, and it's quite popular. I would really characterize it more like a restaurant than a cafe. Even before lunchtime they were very busy, and it was quite loud. It seemed like there were mostly people who working nearby, as there were several groups of co-workers. I came here by myself just to order a hot chocolate, and I felt embarrassed that I didn't order more. I saw several three course meals passing me by, and they looked awesome. I also noticed many delicious pastries on display, which to me seemed more suitable for the morning time. This great food smells definitely nicely made me start thinking about having lunch a little early today. read more

There was plenty of seating, but since a conference was happening at the time, it started getting pretty packed--especially if you were looking for a larger table. When I ordered, the cashier was super friendly and welcoming. I really appreciated how she greeted me and gave me recommendations when I asked. It made the experience feel more personal. The food came out pretty fast, which was great. I got the breakfast sandwich, and while it was really good and filling, it was also kind of messy and a little tricky to eat. This cafe is a beautiful setting in the heart of DC. The seating area is spacious and the display cases are full of delectable pastries. I went for a Papa Bowl and a Cappuccino to start my day. The bowl consisted of roasted potatoes with bacon and arugula and topped with a fried egg and half an avocado. This bowl was flavorful and every item well cooked. i love this place, it's a go to for matcha. probably end up going like once a week. staff is super friendly. my go to is the iced vanilla matcha with oat milk and i pretty much just chug it lol. i've tried their foods too, the papas breakfast bowl and the chicken sandwich are my favs, i love the sandwich so much. i don't think i love their espresso, but the lattes are still pretty solid. their pastries and sweet treats are okay, i think i like their savory stuff more read more

Ugh I've had two issues just this week so I agree with the other reviewer who said that this location does not have the same quality control as others. This one is incredibly busy, which I believe is what leads to the problems of drinks taking a long time to come out, not being made correctly, coming out cool, food not showing up to your table and when it finally does, it is the wrong food. The line is long and they have one person at the register who can move through people quickly. We went on a Monday to get hot chocolates, and both my hot choc and my friend's hot choc tasted like they didn't have any chocolate in them. One took forever to come out. On Friday, I arrived around 9:30am and it was packed, you could barely get a table. I ordered a specialty hot drink and it took about 10 minutes to come out and was cool. At 10:15am I ordered a tuna sandwich and by the time I was getting ready to leave an hour later it still hadn't arrived. I then asked if they could pack it to go and when I got home, I realized they had given me a chicken sandwich instead of tuna. The other time I've been there the wifi wasn't working. It is sad to write this because the other mamans I have gone to have been really good and at this one, the chicken sandwich and cookie were great. Today was one of those rare days when I actually had the day off from work. My partner and I wanted to give this place a try to see if it's a good place to chill. When we walked in, we immediately knew that it was somewhat formal, and we were both dressed somewhat casually. The service was great every step of the way, but I felt guilty that we didn't order an actual breakfast entre. Some of the breakfast sandwiches that were being brought to other tables appeared to be quite the work of art. The pastries are what I had my eyes on, and more specifically the muffins were definitely the gourmet style. The coffee and muffins were good, and we didn't spend a whole lot of time there. We went there Friday at 5:30 PM, expecting to order dinner since they close at 7 PM. However, we were told the kitchen was already closed. Because of that, we just ordered hot and cold coffee, which were surprisingly served in paper cups. To make things worse, they started blasting "Closing Time". Honestly, this was one of the rudest and most disappointing restaurant experiences we've had. Very poor customer service. read more
Maman is a notch up from Tatte Bakery. The gooey Chocolate Chip cookies are divine! I enjoyed Papa's Bowl (vegetarian version - minus the bacon!) with a sunny-side up (egg over easy), slide avocado, caramelized onions and kale on a bed of diced crispy hash potatoes and topped with chipotle aioli. The flavors blended really well together with a savory palette. I love crispy hash brown potatoes, but just wish there was another egg and more veggies to balance out the dish as it was loaded with potatoes. While the ginormous Chocolate Chip Cookie was divine when I heated it up at home in the oven (crispy outer layer with a gooey inside), it was stone cold at the restaurant. This was odd as I saw the server take the cookies right off a tray. While I love the vibrant, homey atmosphere (great way to escape the city!) and the meal was good, it was a bit on the pricey side. read more

I love how cozy the vibe is and how aesthetically pleasing everything is. It's a casual and cute French spot with good pastries and brunch options. On this visit, we shared the delicious papa's breakfast bowl. My fiancé ordered the Oprah famous maman's nutty chocolate chip cookie. I stole a bite of it and loved how crunchy the outside was and gooey the inside was. I got the almond brownie croissant and found it to be much drier than I had hoped. He got a small drip coffee and I got my all time favorite honey lavender latte. I wish I got the name of the cashier who helped us, but she was incredibly kind and charming. My last visit to a different Maman location was not pleasant, so this one was a delight with such great service. There are plenty of seating options here too which is really nice. Beautiful corner restaurant with fresh, healthy food and delicious drinks. The line was to the door when we arrived on a Monday morning, though it moved pretty quickly even though there's only one register. There's a huge assortment of baked goods and made to order items. I got the omelette with ham, tomato and Comte cheese. It was perfect. I liked the side salad which was light. I got a side of bacon and it was delicious. I liked that a server brought our food and drinks to our table, though my latte was obviously sitting for a while before it made it to my table. I had a bite of my husband's croissant. It was a little dense, though great flavor. There was tons of seating across two separate rooms for all sized groups and lots of natural light. Great breakfast spot in the city. read more
My friend and I stopped by this past Sunday morning after our run for some casual breakfast foods and coffee. It was quite busy so we had to scout around before finding a table. Maman has expanded a lot in the DC area and it's most similar to Tatte in the sense that the interior is upscale and elegant for a cafe with casual breakfast/brunch options and coffee. ELISA'S BREAKFAST BOWL - 16 The portion size was pretty big, filled with lots of chickpeas, roasted tomatoes, feta, farro, roasted butternut squash with a sunny side egg on top. The breakfast bowl was well seasoned with herbs and balsamic vinegar. It was a bit dense/heavy after awhile, but I didn't mind packing up the left overs to be enjoyed the following day. Overall, felt pretty balanced and tasty but quite rich. PISTACHIO WREATH CAPPUCCINO WITH DARK CHOCOLATE - 6.50 +1 oat milk Way too pricy for a cappuccino (it's also an 8 oz drink) but it's not too sweet, pretty nutty and the dark chocolate ganache was lovely. My only quip is that they did not mix the ganache in the drink well, so most of it was sitting on the bottom untouched. Overall, we enjoyed the food here but found it to be a bit too expensive (not to mention the 10% DC restaurant tax). If I'm in the area wanting a coffee or a casual breakfast bite, Maman will be one of my options. read more

Absolutely delicious food! The line might get long but it goes by quickly so the wait is never long. There's also plenty of seating, always a table available which is definitely nice on weekends. Aesthetic delightful cafe in the middle of Penn Quarter. They have cute rustic tables and decor in the middle of flowering trees. It feels like a little getaway from the city. Treat yourself before your walk to the art museums in DC. Everyone says to try their blueberry feta scone, it is so good and quite large. I also had their quiche, soy latte and tiramisu brownie (a bit too sweet and dry for my liking). They also have hot sauce on the side if you want to jazz up your savory pastries. The latte is good and comes in an antique provincial cup. Their small size latte is also a big portion. The service is quick, you order at the front and grab a number for sit down orders. read more

I'm a new fan of Maman after trying the Union Market location a few times. This Downtown/Gallery Place location gets just as busy and may actually even be a little busier. Despite the line and the fight for a table, the food is just as tasty as the Union Market location. I normally get the Papa's Breakfast Bowl with a fried egg and a seasonal latte or iced coffee. Both my food and drink were goood! They have hot sauce at the stands around the restaurant and the bowl is filling likely because of all the potatoes. I also normally get one of Oprah's favorite cookies, I think they're walnut and chocolate chip but whatever they are, they don't last long once you heat it up a little and have it with a glass of milk! read more
