    Salsa Bar

Looking for a delicious Mexican restaurant with a full spread salsa bar?? Check out Mamas & Beer in Asheville, NC! Taste as many salsas as you'd like to pair with your perfect meal. This spot also serves free bean dip with cantina thin style chips. A table favorite was the fajitas and the Choripollo dish. The Choripollo entree was stacked high with deliciously seasoned meat covered in queso served with rice, beans, and a fresh salad mix. Make sure to start your meal with one of their house margaritas that packs a punch. Add this spot to your Asheville, NC bucket list today!

When you have a craving for Mexican food, then you should go to someplace that has authentic Mexican food made by actual Mexicans. This is one of those great places. No TexMex here. This is the authentic real thing. We sit down, we order a Dos, Equis Ambar, and the guacamole bowl that they make fresh right at the table with a smile and simple but delicious ingredients! I get the shrimp fajita, but I skipped the tortillas because everything else is delicious enough. It's fresh, it's cooked, wonderfully, and it's quick. Delish.

Went back and forth between a 3 and a 4 with this one. Ultimately decided on a 3 because even though my main problem was the staff (and you never know who you will get/how that may change) the food was also not great. Arrived at 8 pm on a Monday. Asked if they were open as it was very empty. I was told yes so I sat down. Again confirmed that they close at 9 pm. It was clear from the get go that they did not want me here. I wish I had just trusted my gut and left. Everyone was super short with me from the second I stepped in even though there was an hour till closing. They came to my table immediately and were like "what do you want?" I hurriedly ordered fish fajitas. The bean dip was delivered and delicious. The tortillas arrived a solid 5 minutes before the fajitas. At least it all arrived hot and quick. Loved the veggies but the fish was a bit dry and covered in some creamy sauce that was ok. For $16 it felt a little steep. Happy to have 2 meals though. Before i was even onto my second taco, the waitress deliver the check saying no rush. I asked for a box and paid. I was out by 8:25. Didn't want to stay any longer. Overall I'd like to come back and try something else. Maybe for lunch?

I grabbed take out on a busy evening, the mixed fajitas - chicken, steak, shrimp and all the mixed veggies - SO GOOD! Like everything was cooked perfectly and there was the right balance of everything. I don't like beans but these ones are tolerable with a big scoop of rice. Also got an order of the samosas, I think that's what they were called. They're little corn tortilla ish things topped with meat and veggies, fresh guack and they kind of fell apart but damn were they tasty. Not sure I would order them again just because I think I would prefer a taco. But they were good. Could have used extra chips, but oh well, it was take out. I was able to fill my own sauces. I am boring and stick with the green stuff. Everything else burns my face off lol I am getting weak in my old age. The parking lot is a bit of an cluster show but what are ya gonna do. Most of them are.

Fantastic food and friendly service. This one is a gem. More later. I'm going back for seconds! 5 Stars!

Pretty standard Mexican restaurant. Large selection with what you can find at other standard restaurants. I got the enchilada because the tacos only come with one during lunch and I didn't know if that would be enough, but my friend's tacos looked a lot better than my enchilada. However, the shrimp was cooked well and charred nicely.

I can't believe I've never been here before this past week. I wanted to meet my friend at Papa's and Beer but she suggested meeting here instead and I'm glad we did. As much as I love Papa's, this was so much more quiet and chill. When we arrived at 6pm on a Friday evening, there was no wait and we were the only table outside (only three tables outside but still...). Upon arrival and throughout our entire dining experience, staff was on point, they were friendly and accommodating. I appreciated that food came out quickly but not too quickly, like I could tell it had been freshly prepared and was nice and hot when it came out. Of course we began our meal with the complimentary chips and bean dip. The salsa bar is inside and we helped ourselves to a variety of different salsas of different flavors and spice levels. Although I didn't really especially love any of the salsas, the bean dip was great and the chips were crunchy and the perfect amount of salty. I was craving a burrito and so I ordered a veggie burrito (I can't remember the name on the menu) and added shrimp and subbed red sauce. They were super happy to do so and when it came out, it was huge and delicious. I've never had such a fresh tasting burrito in Asheville. The vegetables were plentiful and tasted delicious and like great summer veggies. The shrimp was cooked perfect and the sauce and cheese on top were not too heavy. This was a huge burrito and was served with rice, sour cream and lettuce. I'll definitely be back here again when the craving strikes!

From the warm crispy chips with hot bean dip to the spicy chicken soup, from the sizzling beef fajitas to the corn tortillas, the food was great and reasonably priced. We will be back!

Chile Rellenos and an Enchilada. They were huge! And amazing. The Margarita was on point too.

We tried to get lunch in Biltmore Village, but between the damage from TS Fred and the majority of the places closing at 2:30 and 3pm, we had to keep looking. Talk about a lucky find! The food was ample portions, flavorful but not spicy, the drinks were cold and the staff were warm and friendly. There is a salsa bar with a wide variety of choices from mild, with or without cilantro, to hot and hotter. If we vacation this way again we will be back again.

This place advertises California Mexican food and delivers. As a California native, I can tell you how hard it is to find good Mexican food in Virginia/North Carolina. I ordered a combo tamale, enchilada, and taco. The taco was especially tasty, and the other two items were also good. Complimentary chips were not served with salsa, but what seemed like a slightly spicy bean dip. I do not usually like bean dip, but this was excellent! Servuce was promot and attentive without being intrusive. Great experience overall.

We are on a road trip and on our first day we have had bad luck in selecting restaurants. We searched for restaurants tonight and the reviews were all over the place in opinions. I finally selected Mamas & Bears but was not convinced we could find good Mexican food outside of Texas and what might just be a bar. When we sat down, they brought bean dip and chips. Now I got really nervous. Chips have to be served with Salsa in Mexican food restaurants. The bean dip had a little kick of heat to it. Then I noticed people eating little servings of salsa. Looking around we found the Salsa Bar. I wandered over and discovered a large selection from "baby salsa" to " very spicy". We each selected 2 salsas as limited by the establishment. There were at least 10 selections of flavors. We tried the flavors with the chips and it was a fair flavoring. I ordered the Baja Fish tacos and my sponsor had the 2 cheese enchiladas. The salsas topped off the main dishes. A great pounding of flavors was absorbed into the fish and cheese. We finished off the salsas over the meal. The experience was wonderful and I temporarily got over my Texas Foodie Pride attitude. Great place to eat. It was very fun and entertaining.

The space is very nicely designed and laid out. Plenty of room in a cozy environment. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, on top of being very effective. I was extremely pleased to find that they even had a few different vegetarian proteins for their various dishes. In terms of the food, I went with a burrito bowl with vegan chorizo. The presentation was fantastic: my photo doesn't do it justice. It was also enormous. Much more food than I could finish, but also delicious. There were so many layers of flavors and textures that really came together in a cohesive dish. The best part is that they offer three different house made salsas, which really leveled up the dish and the experience. I would absolutely recommend checking this place out. The very hip, somewhat low key vibe was comfortable while also feeling high end well designed.

The space gets a little intimate when the line gets long because apparently everyone else will likely also have the brilliant idea to come here but, lucky for everyone, the wait moves quickly. And the portions are appropriately sized for the price, which feels almost rebellious in this economy. But the churros, the churros... they are dropped in the fryer right in front of you then served hot and coated with actual grated cinnamon and sugar. Actual cinnamon. Revolutionary concept! As a vegetarian, it was alarming to see a staff touch raw fish with their gloves and proceed to touch all the fresh vegetables without a glove change. After letting them know that this happened, the response was only a "oh sorry" and back to regular business. Not only is this unappealing for anyone to see, but an incredibly serious allergy risk that they do not care about and kept putting veggies on folks food. This is the best burrito spot in Asheville, and now, I don't know I can support or recommend them in all good conscientiousness.

Sadly, it is over an hour and a half drive if we want to return. Alberto, the owner, was very welcoming, along with his servers and bartender. That day, they had a Mariachi band, which was really cool, and the music was great for the ambiance of the place. Alberto told us about his other restaurant, and I would love to go check it out one day as well. We observed him closely as he was speaking to all the patrons like family and was very good at answering any questions. There's a salsa bar that is included in case anyone wants to try their house-made salsas. They start you off with fresh chips and the dip they have. It is honestly the best we have had so far, and my husband loves Mexican cuisine a lot. It's a mix of refried beans with cheese sauce and red sauce. I ordered the Camarones Zarandeados-- Peel-and-eat shrimp, marinated in house seasoning, and garnished with fresh cilantro. Served with rice and corn. Along with a strawberry daiquiri. It was truly a dish I would want to return to eat. The seasoned shrimp were juicy, and I loved peeling them myself and getting messy with the juices. II usually dislike most rice made in restaurants, but this was definitely delicious, and I'd happily eat it again. My husband had a creamy burrito with steak , peppers onions , and olla beans topped with cheese sauce and served with rice , lettuce, and tomatoes on the side. His drink was a Corona margarita. It was a huge portion, and he was full after eating 3/4 of the burrito. It is interesting he said it was his favorite to date as well. We both tried the birria tacos , and OMG, they were so yummy!! The sauce made for them was perfect, and the meat was actually seasoned well. I've had other ones, and well, let's just say they weren't my favorite. We also tried the "paleta" shot. It tasted just like tamarind. That was definitthe order of ely great and refreshing even as a shot. We ended with the Sopapilla for dessert. It was truly a lovely evening with my husband after an almost 2-hour drive to Asheville, and I am eager to go back for the great food and ambiance.
