Finally, an old fashioned pizza with REAL mozzarella cheese ( special flavor from the outside of the mozzarella ball or wheel that lingers on your tongue) and with a very rare DELICATE smooth sauce that shows hours of patient " stewing" with the soft flavor of genuine beef and natural beef fat. You can tell because of the quiet layers of flavor when you consume the sauce. Most Italian spaghetti sauce today comes from a pre made can with no stewing no beef no genuine spices that have been stewing -- tastes either like an open can of tomatoes or sharp with a small handful of minimal spices. Mama's Pizza has cooked up a very rare traditional "soft subtle" flavor in their "sauce/ gravy". YUM...... An uncle created this eatery 51 years ago.... and it is still owned and run by the family!! This is not the Ritz, this is an old family much loved weathered family neighborhood place. But the bathrooms are shockingly new elegant immaculate with high tech equipped hand blowers etc !! I love places like this, I can truly relax feel 100% myself and really enjoy my meal. The hand made almost sculptural wall frescos of Italian countryside complete with vines and fun parrots show hours of fun love. Veal Parmesan couple of pasta dishes sausages peppers home made meatballs and very nice salads and of course a beautiful antipasto spread. Pizza dough is hand made 1/4 inch approx and mine was a touch over cooked so the crust was hard. It is very hard to create the "queens/ Brooklyn" pizza which requires a SUPER hot oven and high turnover to justify the staggering utility costs. Then you get the thin bottom that is hard and the other side is softer. But for Minnesota and I HAVE BEEN HUNTING for a pizza here for 17 years‼ this is very very very good read more

I don't even know where to begin. This place is amazing. We had a big party and it's a seat yourself dining area, but we waited awhile for the perfect table and this guy that worked there asked us how many and he put a table with a booth so we would all fit. Which was super nice because he didn't have to do that. So we sit down and this amazing lady named Gabriela comes and gets drinks for us. She kept them nice and full the whole time. We ordered and she brought us free bread (which was amazing). Then the food came out and BRO it was so good. Me and my husband got a "small" pizza with pepperoni and sausage and a small order of spaghetti with a meatball to share. The pizza was thinner crust (which usually I'm partial to) and it was cut in squares, which really just hits different. This pizza was SO good and it was definitely not small. She also brought both of us huge dishes of ranch, like quality ranch. The pasta was also AMAZING, so much sauce and flavor and that meatball was so good. I think they have a really good sauce recipe that makes everything SO good. So some of us tapped out and got boxes and she even brought a HUGE container for the amazing ranch (obviously we gotta take some home). That's when she's like, y'all got room for the ice cream that comes with your meal? BRO whattttt, like how amazing. AND THERES MORE! We're already and paid (very generous tips) and she brings us FULL CANDY BARS BRO. I can't, this place is amazing. I've died and gone to heaven. I came here for dinner on Sunday with my husband and toddler. They opened at 4 and we got there at 4:30. The restaurant was already full and lines off the hook with orders to go. We waited for a half hour for a table. I wanted to go to a traditional mom and pop pizza shop and this fit perfectly. There were 16 -20 tables and 2 servers but service was good. There was a front kitchen where the pizzas were made and a back kitchen where the pastas and other foods were made. We ordered a mini Italian fries and a medium (labeled small but it was the middle sized option) pizza, the meat special. I was super hungry. We should have ordered something else for an appetizer so we'd get it sooner. We waited over an hour for the pizza fries and a little longer for our pizza. I thought the food was delicious but over an hour seemed a bit long. I think there should be a separate pizza oven for the restaurant. There should be some priority for dining in. Waiting over an hour was too long for me, or maybe we should have been warned it would be over an hour. Pastas coming out looked pretty delicious. Next time if we go back, take out might be best so I can do something else with my time for over an hour. For dessert they serve complimentary mini cones with chocolate soft serve ice cream. read more

Adding yet another review for this fabulous Pizza Restaurant! It's been two years since my last visit. I flew from DC to MN to visit my mom and had to get my Mama's fix and it didn't disappoint!! The dinning area was closed due to Covid so we ordered and elected takeout. Even after a 15 minute drive home it was hot! I will be visiting my mom again in April so I'll definitely be back. This ma and pa place is great. Still run by the son, Tony. Tony has to be one of the friendliest owners I have ever met! He works side by side making pizzas with his staff. We choose not to have one of their "outstanding" pizzas this visit so I could try his other menu items. However MOST people come for the pizza and I will certainly have one on my next visit... Service was prompt and their was NOT a seat in the house at 5:30. ...and this is the metro when most people are stuck in traffic at that time. The place never had an open seat and the lobby area was constantly full of people. Tony commented this was like a Friday night (it was Thursday - My review is a couple days late). The meal delivery was a bit slow but Tony was talking our ear off with sports talk so it was not a big deal! The waitress apologized which tells me something was amiss in the kitchen. I ordered the Italian sausage sandwich. It was covered with cheese and sauce but I think the bread was in there somewhere. Tony commented that everything is made fresh and it tasted that way. The meal was outstanding, including the warm bread served before the meal and the complimentary ice cream cone delivered with the check. Tony said his mom started the ice cream and it has been a staple ever since. The price was very reasonable. I MUST visit in St. Paul. read more

I liked the Willy Wonka looking walls. The walls by our booth reminded me of something I would see in Willy Wonka (the original) or on a cookie. It just reminded me of a big wall of frosting even though it was just decorative ceramic plaster (?). Very charming and cozy place on Rice street. Have always thought about stopping in and finally did. Seat your self anywhere in the cozy dining room. We chose one of the booths and Anthony, our server came to take our order. Split the Lg Antipasto Salad with plenty left over. The Vienna bread accompanying the salad was very fresh and still warm. Split the Lg Italian Sausage and Mushroom. I'm not typically a fan of thin crust, but this was pretty good. J wasn't a huge fan of the crispiness, but still thought it was good. Their sausage was tasty, canned mushrooms. Owners are very nice. As we left, the owner (I would assume) asked how we liked it and thanked us for coming. Always a nice touch in my book and made it more personable. Anthony our server was great! In the parking lot, some of the staff waived goodbye. Very friendly bunch of people which I assume is a lot of family working at Mama's. Really gives off a welcoming feel. Mama Mia that's a good pizza! Not sure what makes the red sauce so tasty, but it could be the recipe handed down through the generations as the deal breaker. In my opinion its one of the best restaraunts in Twin Cities. Staff are friendly and generous. The food is simply delicious. It is takeout only now since COVID. It is the only reason I did not give it the fifth star. I had been eating in the restaraunt since I was a little kid back in the 70s. When I was just starting out in life and didnt have two nickels to rub together I always made sure to set aside enough to have dinner there a couple times a month. I was told by the owner that they were in the middle of their lunch rush and call back when they weren't busy. (How am I supposed to know when they're busy?). I asked him what time would that be? Mama's is AMAZING, I have been here a handful of times now. I didn't feel I could write a review at first, as I didn't try a few different things on their menus till now. I really like the meat ravioli. I like to get the full to have left overs, and it doesn't cost much more. I usually opt out of getting the extra cheese, because I am not a big cheese person to begin with. Enough cheese comes on the pasta even before the extra cheese option. Their pizza is delicious. I've had two different kinds, I've had the meat combo and supreme without mushrooms. Sorry I'm not a mushroom person. It's the texture. ha Their pizza is a thin crust type, and I personally enjoy that. Their sauce is so good, I don't know how they make it, but it is fabulous. Mama's Pizza is definitely something you must try! The location is a bit small, there is a small parking lot as well. During rush hours it can be a bit of a wait, but that just shows how many people really do enjoy this place. It is family friendly, and a family owned establishment which makes it even more better! Came here to meet up with a very good friend of mine. He suggested this place and said the pizza was really good. After having some pizza I agree with him, the pizza was very good. Also I like the interior, it feels very cozy and comfortable. We ordered a large Special Deluxe Pizza. I like how their pizzas aren't like the usual pizzas. The bread is very thin and crisp and the toppings are piled high. But what impressed me was how they put their cheese on the pizza. It's like they put their tomato sauce on the bread then the toppings and finally place a blanket of cheese on top. So as an end result the toppings are hiding underneath a sheet of melted cheese. Overall the pizza was very good and probably now on my top ten list of pizza joints. I would love to come back again and order another pizza of theirs to try. Went to this place again and it only seems to get better! I had the sloppy Dago, which was one of the best I have every had. It was smothered in sauce and a ton of cheese was baked on it. I had to be rolled out of this place and I had to skip supper I was still so full. The portion sizes here are huge. My wife made two meals of the one I brought home for her. My daughter had the spaghetti and meatballs which was also covered in sauce and cheese baked on top. It's definitely on my must go again and again list. I seriously don't understand why this place is so highly rated. This past weekend, we tried it out. On the plus side, the staff was very friendly and were clearly working hard; the place was incredibly busy. We got 3 pizzas - plain cheese, veggie combo, and meat combo - and each one was awful. The crust was super thin, flavorless, hard on the edges, and soggy in the middle. We found the sauce pretty bland. The cheese was not good quality, so it was tough and lacking flavor. On the veggie pizza, the toppings were plentiful, but the green peppers and onions were basically uncooked, the mushrooms were canned, and there were literally handfuls of cheap canned green and black olives. The Meat Combo also had a lot of toppings, but they were strangely bland and kind of mushy. Overall, it was a super disappointing experience, we ended up throwing out all the leftovers, and we will never be back. St Paul has much, much, much better pizza. read more

When we walked in, despite it being take out only because of covid, multiple staff members greeted us. One of them, Jim, I believe, talked to us for a while and asked us where we were from. The artwork in the place was super fun and old fashioned. Jim told us about Tony, the owner and showed us the picture of his mother on the wall. Such a wonderful experience and that was before the pizza! It was so dang delicious! We got mushroom and onion. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for great pizza from a small business owner. Wow!!! Best pizza I've had in awhile! I went with coworkers from work since one of them heard it was good food. We got the Flavor Explosion pizza and the chef mentioned that's their #1 selling pizza when we put our order in. Turns out Tony, the chef, is the owner and also a great guanine guy! Even upgraded the small cheese pizza to a large for wearing our Vikings gear in! They have more than just pizza too. Sandwiches and salads. The place was very busy at lunch time but no one was waiting too long for tables. Highly recommend! We might be turning this into our routine Friday lunch with the coworkers. Oh!
