Gong No? Gong NO! We've been coming to Gong Ho for about 30 years. The food and service and atmosphere that we experienced on Saturday, July 25 around 6 PM makes me want to not return. The young man that seated us was absolutely unwelcoming. Our tableware was dirty. To our credit, our server was nice. I had the Gong Ho special chow mein, which was not good. My wife had the shrimp chop Suey, which she said was good. We kept hearing loud woman's voice screaming in Chinese from the kitchen. This went on all throughout the meal. We had plenty of leftovers cause I barely touched mine and threw mine out once I got home. We will wait a few weeks and try again and if the food in atmosphere is the same, we won't be back. read more

This spot is a neighborhood staple. It has been around for over 30 yrs and I will forever remember this place for their $3 lunch specials. It's a little bit more than that now with inflation and all but $8.50 is still not that bad! They have the same favorites that I grew up eating. My parents had owned the travel agency in the nearby strip mall so this was a family favorite for lunch. The service is quick and they even made some updates to the place. The trademark tiger stained glass is still there but the restaurant has a fresh newer look. We still take friends here that come back to visit for nostalgia purposes. read more

This place has definitely gone downhill over the past 8-12 months. Depending on which entrée you order, it might be fresh -- or it might taste old and reused. In my case, I got freezer-burned egg rolls and white rice that clearly had that unpleasant, days-old fridge flavor. It seems like they're more focused on saving money than delivering quality food. Instead of tossing old items, they repurpose them and serve them to customers. This has consistently happened on 3 different orders. If the food isn't old, it's often undercooked -- likely because they're rushing to get orders out. The result? Greasy, pale meals that feel half-finished. Unless you see them make your food fresh right in front of you, be cautious -- you're likely to be disappointed. It's a real shame. Just a year ago, this place served good, made-to-order meals. I've been going to Gong Ho ever since I was a kid and it has never disappointed me! Walking in, it is newly renovated and much more modern but still having a warm welcoming feel. Gong Ho is famous in my family for its quick and delicious food for an affordable price. I get the same thing every time I go: lunch special number 5 (sweet and sour chicken with barbecue strips) with egg drop soup. Food is served very fast and the quality has never gone down. My parents love to get their fish filet with vegetables and the shrimp egg foo yung. We will continue to be regular customers of Gong Ho. It is a family business and you'll often see the families' kids helping out- so you already know that the food is bussin'. Pricewise, it is completely affordable and more than fair. I appreciate that portions have not changed throughout the years. The restaurant is great for big groups as well. As always, I always encourage everyone to support their local businesses! Local spots always have my heart. Recently tried this for take out since I was in the vicinity and the fam wanted some specific Chinese dishes. Ordered over the phone and our order was ready in 10 mins. They have a door for dine in and a separate door for carry out/take out. I ordered the hot and sour soup, house fried rice, and mapo tofu. The hot and sour soup was a whole quart size container which was nice for the price point, we thought it was ok but would've liked it to be spicier and more sour. The house fried rice had shrimp, chicken, and beef. Was pretty good, not too salty. We enjoyed the mapo tofu, it had very nice heat to it and would order again! Not sure how the sit down experience is but would definitely try ordering some other items next time! Ample parking surrounding the building. read more

The food here was awful. The fried rice was disgusting the worse flavor almost flavorless. The only good thing was the sweet and sour sauce that went with the sweet and sour trio. It is a Chinese restaurant that is Americanized. I know because the food is a bit tailored towards American tastes. Nothing wrong with that. It is what it is. I could not talk about the service because I did carry -out. They renovated the interior from what it was a few years ago. What I have noticed is that people are going in for a sit down lunch and people come in to pick up their lunches. It's busy. My opinion is that it is probably the best in the area. This is a local family owned restaurant in the Downers Grove area that serves Chinese style cuisine. Our go-to is usually Ming Hin out in Naperville, however, we decided to try this venue based on others' recommendations and we're so glad we did! The food is served hot and fresh every time we order delivery; we get a variety of different menu items each time including poultry, beef, noodles, and tofu. The seasoning and sauces they use are very consistent each time and larger than normal serving sizes than other restaurants. From living in the city for 20 years, I got very used to real, authentic ethnic foods. Living in the suburbs has been difficult finding such of the same quality. Nice looking restaurant with reasonable prices and large portions, but the food was just mediocre. Overall, the food was excessively salty and the preparations didn't do much to bring out great textures or flavors. Here are my thoughts on the different items I tried. Egg roll: Probably the best item I tried. The skin was crisp and the mix of pork and cabbage had the flavor that I expected. Potstickers: The meat filling inside was tasty, but the skin was excessively thick and the pan searing didn't do much to bring out a crispy element or seared flavor. Orange chicken: The flavor of the orange peel was evident in the sauce, but the sauce itself tasted fairly flat. The chicken appeared to be deep fried, but this wasn't very evident in the texture as it was somewhat soggy and the edges of the batter didn't really have the wok hay that I was expecting. Mongolian beef: Not the sweet hoisin / plum sauce version that you get at a lot of other places. This is the spicy version which I believe had chili bean paste and onion, and wasn't my favorite flavor combination (particularly as this was very salty). The beef texture was also a bit soft in this preparation. Sweet and sour combination: The sweet and sour shrimp wasn't bad and was actually quite crisp. But the pork and chicken part of this was quite overcooked. The sweet and sour sauce looks nice with small chunks of pepper, tomato, and pineapple but this added little to its flavor. Overall, not a bad place if you need a nicer atmosphere and to get full at a reasonable price. But the food is nothing special. read more

The TPS was OK but the BBQ Pork Fried Rice was absolutely horrible that I just threw it out. The plain white rice tasted better?! Celebrated the Chinese New Year here and soon it became clear it is the best Chinese restaurant in town. The dinner for two was extra delicious and could easily feed three. The egg drop soup was thick and rich good. If your kid has the Chicken Tenderloins on the kids menu they may never want the nuggets at McDonald's again. We ordered beef chow fun, mapo tofu and crab rangoon for carryout. I've had much better, but I used to live next to chinatown. Portion sizes are large and the flavors are mediocre. Chow fun dish had a good amount of veggies included, but surprisingly small amount of noodles. I thought the sauce for the mapo tofu was too thicky/jelly like. We ordered several menu items for carry out as we had family visiting from out of town. One choice was a seafood dish that should have included what was called a bird nest made of fried noodles etc., but when we got home that portion was missing from the order and it was very disappointing and too far to go back to pick up. I called and was told they only include that portion for in house orders and no longer package it for carry out. That was not stated on the menu nor was I told over the phone when placing the order!! It would have been no problem to place into a carry out container!Now they say they'll give me a credit...but that doesn't make up for the disappointment in the meal ordered for my visiting family member!! read more

I heard that there were new owners so I decided to try it again. It's been awhile and my friends drive from Naperville to eat here so we tried it out. They updated the restaurant with a new oriental design. The staff was pleasant and attentive. Quick seating and service. Menus water and hot tea served right away. I ordered chicken, peppers and tomato and hot and sour soup and egg roll. My husband ordered the Vegetable delight. The hot and sour soup was tasty, it had cabbage in it which was new for me but it did taste good not too salty good balance of flavor but I'd like a little less cabbage in it. The egg roll tasted good. The main course was a good portion. I took half home to have for dinner. The chicken was soft and tender, the peppers and tomatoes tasted fresh. It tastes like I remember, which made me happy! The fried rice was good could have used a little more veggies to balance the rice but it was good. My husband enjoyed veggie delight and ate the whole thing. He did want more flavor in the rice and didn't care for the cabbage in the soup. Gong No? Gong NO! I rarely write a negative review and I'm disappointed that I feel compelled to write this review. My family and I have eaten hundreds of dinners at Gong Ho over the last 30 years. We've taken several visitors from out of town there too. I last ate at Gong Ho about a month before the date of this review. I became severely sick to my stomach after eating my favorite fish egg foo young. My wife and I thought it was a fluke so we tried it again yesterday for take out. The noodles in the wonton were so over cooked that you could drink them through a straw. The broccoli in my wife's dish were similarly over cooked. My egg foo young was over cooked to the point of being inedible. We threw out the whole meal and won't be back. read more
