Ever since moving to San Jose we tried multiple Chinese food spots, this is the only one that we found that we consistently go to. The price point is awesome, you get such large servings and the staff is also very accommodating. There have been times where we get kind of bored of the usual order that we get so we ask the staff what would you recommend and every time they have recommended something new it has been absolutely delicious! If you don't really know what to try here or what to add to your usual order definitely ask the staff and they will steer you to something amazing! We also did order food from here for our daughters birthday party and I think that was the first time we tried the orange chicken. It is so amazing! I personally really like the panda express orange chicken but this one completely puts it to shame. It's so aromatic and juicy, and the spice on it builds so after you've had a few you really get the full experience of the kick that it's supposed to have. I personally really like that the spice level builds because when we did purchase it for the birthday party my grandmother had some and she cannot handle spicy foods at all. It's been year's since I've been to Mandarin House to eat. It's under new management and the staff is very polite, friendly and professional! The inside has been remodeled and looks nice. We ordered the combination platter 1) magnolian Beef. It comes with an egg roll & either fried rice or steam rice. It has a really good flavor unlike any other Chinese restaurant I've eaten at. 2) walnut chicken fried rice and egg roll. The egg rolls are hand made in the restaurant when ordered. They are vegetarian and tasted delicious! Their is plenty of parking in the Plaza, if you've never been here i recommend going to enjoy a good meal. Definitely recommend getting the Mongolian beef because it was super flavorful and always a good dish to share. You really can't go wrong with getting different options to share as we also got the bbq pork fried rice, hot and sour soup, bbq spare ribs (which not many places do so it was nice to see on the menu that they do the actual rib instead of pieces like I've seen at other places), egg rolls, string beans, and beef chow fun. So now the food: Pan fried dumplings, Chicken sizzling rice soup, Beef with broccoli, Mongolian beef, Orange chicken not breaded, House special chow mei fun. I asked what the difference was between chow fun and chow mei fun. Fun is fat rice noodles and Mei fun is skinny rice noodles. Which by the way was delicious!! You get what you pay for. This chinese restaurant is good if you have nowhere to to, and your wife is lazy to cook anything. This place is such convenient for us since it's only two blocks down. However, there's nothing unique or special about their cooking. On a regular Tuesday night, we ordered these items for dinner: 1. Beef Fried Rice. The food could be more flavorful, a fair amount of beef portions, however, the chef could use a bit of salt and pepper. 2. General Tso's Chicken. Great amount of chicken for the price that they charge, nice sauce coating the fried chicken. 3. Jjampong ( Korean style spicy seafood noodle). The portion is only for two people, seriously. However, I would appreciate more if they had cleaned the mussels before they cooked it. See my picture of how dirty the mussels were. They were only two giants mussels, the rest were squid, shrimp, tofu, veggies. 4. Crab rangoon. Basically it's fried wonton filled with cream cheese. This is the appetizer that I always reorder from this place. They are not stingy with the cheese they put inside the wontons. Overall, they are better than Panda Express for sure. Tried this place a couple times. Food is standard American Chinese, not authentic Chinese. Most Americans will be fine. You expect Mandarin House to be Northern Chinese cuisine, but it's not. It's just a standard menu of American Chinese that Americans expect. Too much starch, too much salt, probably MSG. The place is a bit small, but most people order take out I think. read more

Really terrible. I ordered a sweet & sour chicken. This dish came with plain battered & fried chicken, and a dish of sweet and sour sauce. To quote Tom Haverford, "Drizzle it on! I'm not your maid!" Completely unexpected. Worse off the chicken was dry. Enormous chopped vegetables in the dish as well. Not appetizing. The beef chow mein had ok flavor but the noodles were burned. The crab puffs were terribly hard, with large chunks of onion. For $40 I expected a LOT better. Should've just ordered Panda Express. read more

Secret location hidden inside the upper secret corner of the plaza. If you do know search for "Chinese Food" you may easily bypass it. It is very clean and popular than I expected. We ordered the walnut prawns and general Tso Chicken. I'm not a fan of chicken so I'll leave it to you to make the judgment. But as for the prawns: it is the so far the most healthiest "deep fried" prawns / shrimps Id say, super airy fluffy shell, good prawns, together with non deep fried or baked walnuts, plating on top of lightly sauced mayo. My folks live in the Willow Glen area (I grew up there) and we spent YEARS eating the American-style Chinese Food from Taiwan restaurant. When they changed owners we lost our taste for the food and struggled to find a decent replacement. On a whim, we tried Mandarin House, and it's been our go-to Chinese spot ever since. Sometimes the wait-time for take out can be long (upwards of 45 minutes) but it's always worth it and the food is hot. Some notable favorites lately: salt and pepper shrimp, sesame chicken, moo shu pork, egg rolls, and mongolian beef. Their staples like chow mein and fried rice are also great. Egg drop soup: I've never really had an egg drop soup that tasted like it was made with "fresh" ingredients (I guess that's saying a lot about other chinese food I have had...), but the egg drop soup is delicious! They have some bell peppers in there as well, and it isn't too salty, like some other egg drop soups I've had! Crab Puffs/Rangoons: Yum! Doesn't look like the traditional crab rangoon, but tastes just as delicious. Definitely recommend! (and i'm usually not that big of a fan of cream cheese, but they got the ratio of cream cheese to puff down). Fried Dumplings: Just get it fried. I know they have the option of the steaming, but just like....you save like maybe 15-20 calories if you steam it and lose like a bunch of flavor. just no. so get the fried dumplings. they are SO good. Beef and Broccoli: honestly, they really nailed it on the ratio of broccoli and beef. Pretty much half, half! no skimping out on any of it. Taste was good. Mandarin House is our favorite Chinese place in the South Bay. Whenever we find ourselves in South San Jose we try to eat a meal there. We've ordered the Rohan claypot every visit. It's really good, though I would say nothing transcendental. It's heavy on the tofu and also includes mushrooms and noodles. The mu shu chicken is consistently good, as is the broccoli chicken. This time, I got sweet and sour shrimp. The shrimp and sauce are separated, which I get. But the shrimp was heavily battered and wasn't cooked all the way through.
