I was on the hunt for an Eggplant Parmesan sandwich and stumbled across Mandola's on yelp. On a Saturday evening, it took about 10 minutes for the takeout order to be prepared. The sandwich was absolutely delicious. The eggplant was thin, crispy, and cooked to perfection. The only reason I rated Mandola's at 4 stars instead of 5 is that the portion size is a bit small for the price. This restaurant has good Italian food that comes out fast. I've been eating their Italian spaghetti and meatballs since I was paralyzed on my lower right side on March 22, 2016; it's simply a great traditional delight. Speaking of delights, the kingpin owner unilaterally took Lemon Delights off the menu, ushering in the beginning of the removal of great Italian History from 2nd Ward. I'm typing this between stifled fits of grief, only momentarily composed when I reminisced about biting into that dopey snow cake. Lemon Delights are now lost to time, replaced by (cost-effective) fudge choking hazards. I will not stand for this, and neither should you. Bring the Lemon Delight back so I can relapse. As a first gen Italian American it's Kind of a joke to say it's an Italian deli. There's 0 Italian meats on the menu, no mortadella, capicollo, prosciutto. Only have turkey and other American meats. Service is okay... not many people wearing masks and literally talking about coworkers having Covid. Definitely not a deli by true standards you can't even get cold cuts, bread, anything traditional. The food is all frozen, nothing seems to be fresh baked except for what might come from across the street. Meatballs and sausage are frozen so pretty much a no go. It's a lot larger then I expected inside, which is always sort of strange since I stop by in the evenings when they seem slower. On this time I decided to try the chicken parm sandwich, I honestly like this sandwich a bit better than the mandola, just because I feel it fills me up more. For starters the restaurant is decorated beautifully by surrounding university , University of Houston. The main owner of the establishment was so nice and the staff as well. I enjoyed the food I had the pasta Mandola and I enjoyed it so much! The pasta tasted homemade and fresh. I will keep coming back to this restaurant mostly because it is family owned and they are so proud of their surrounding schools, Family and friends ! I work at a nearby major company. The staff in the executive office really likes the food here. I've had it 3 or 4 times, and am just not impressed. The Pasta Mandola was bland, it has chicken, mushrooms, and alfredo - I thought the alfredo sauce and the chicken were both lacking flavor. The spaghetti/marinara with meatballs, I thought the marinara was missing something, so I call it bland as well. I also had a dish, can't recall the name, that was a mixture of pesto and alfredo, something I use to make at home all the time, so I tried it, also bland. The Wop Salad, was $8.95 (menu says $8.29, so I could be wrong, I'm going from memory, but I think it was $8.95) and it is lettuce, 4 slices of carrots, 1 small slice of onion, and about 6 olives, and some fresh gorgonzola cheese. The online menu says olive salad, but it didn't have that - my coworker had a side of it, the olive salad, it definitely was no on my salad. And I'm a huge fan of gorgonzola, so that's why I ordered this salad, but I don't think it was gorgonzola on my salad. It needed a lot more cheese and a lot more onion, in my opinion. If I'm going to have a salad as a meal, it needs substance - add a pepperoncini, salami, tomato, radish, celery, maybe capers or garbanzo's - and still sell it for $8.95. I did really like the dressing that comes with the Wop salad. They have fresh desserts. I've had the 7 Layer Bar and it is really good, but I don't think it's worth $4.49. The staff is friendly. You order at the counter, self serve your fountain drink or tea, and they deliver your food to your table. They have wine and beer. It's not in the greatest area, and it's close to U of H, so you would think the prices would be friendly for college kids, but IMO, they are high. They do offer a U of H discount of 10% if you show your U of H ID. It's never my selection, but when the office is buying, I eat here. read more

The bread is delicious, it has a slight crisp bite to it on the outside, and the inside it is very soft. They are generous with the meats, and the special sauce has a great flavor. The meatballs were cooked perfectly (not dried out like so many other places). Cheese Burger (3/5) - This is big 1/2 lb grilled burger, topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and pickles. The burger is good and has a hint of garlic seasoning. Beer and Wine - The selection includes 4 or 5 bottled beers and a couple wines. They have cold St. Arnold lawnmower on tap for $4 a pint. This is a great beer to pair with a Po'Boy sandwich. However in my option, the price is a little high. This is definitely a hidden gem in the middle of an east downtown warehouse district. They have been in business for over 30 years and I know why. Their sandwiches are outstanding. The first sandwich I ordered was the Chicken Mandola and I have not tried anything else because it was so delicious. The line can get long and the parking lot can fill up so get there early, but they get you through quickly. It is always the same people behind the counter, and I believe they are the family that owns the place. They are often quite comical and definitely have personality. I love that they have the "if you must" section on the menu, which includes burgers and a reuben. The people behind the counter discourage you from trying these, but a coworker just had to have a reuben and he said it was quite good. Everyone I have brought here has been a fan. Getting there is a little out there for some people. My coworkers asked me where we were going and if I was getting them to help dump a body, so don't be afraid that it is in the warehouse district. Only complaint I had was the tomato soup was more of marinara sauce than what I expect of tomato soup. read more

I'm not sure the topic it must've been about some outdated sport but the young guy was overly excited about his own story while my lunch time was ticking away. After about 5 minutes I interjected and the guy disappeared to the back. Despite this odd ordeal I was able to try the Italian sausage wedding soup and a side of spaghetti and marinara. I have came here so many time now and it never disappoint me ever. Although this place is isolated and seems like a old family pop shop. It gives a welcoming feeling, the owner is very nice and funny. I have order the spaghetti here and it is a simple but a very delicious dish. It taste like homemade spaghetti and the meatballs are soft and tender. Most of the pasta dishes come with a garlic butter bread. The pasta Thomas is good but I didn't like zucchini much so this would have been my third choice. However, don't take my words for it, this dish might be for other. My friends and my favorite dish is the pasta Mandola, it was so good. Creamy but not heavy, and the chicken is delicious and perfectly season for me. Typical Italian deli - lots of takeout stuff in counter display cases plus big menu with a lengthy list of dishes ranging from pasta and po boys to burgers. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, the muffaletta special (Thursday), a slice of Italian creme cake and 2 fountain drinks - all for $30. Texture of the pasta and flavor of the sauce was amazing. The muffaletta was not what I was expecting - french bread was super fresh and flavor was great (olive salad) however it wasn't as overwhelming as most of the muffalettas that I've had (i.e. piles of meat and cheese).
