Went in to get a baguette for my son. Unfortunately, they were sold out and only had pastries. As I glanced over to see what they had, I noticed a fly was near the bakery items and it landed on a piece of quiche! I commented to inform the clerk and his response was" oh yeah"! It didn't seem to bother him one bit and he didn't bother to shoo it away! This was a bit unsettling, as flys besides being a nuisance, can present serious food safety concerns. If you're looking for the best croissant in the South Bay, this is where you get it. No sit-down area. It's an order/pick up and go situation. Come early because there will be a line, and things sell out fast. I remember stopping by around 10:00, and they didn't have a lot of pastries already. I've patronized Manresa Bread on multiple occasions, usually in the morning or after lunch. Without a doubt my favorite pastry is their kouign amann. Although it's made with a lot of butter, it doesn't taste greasy or too buttery. I also like that they aren't too sweet. If I had to be extra critical, I'd say their crust is just a hair too hard. However, props for being ultra consistent. They always taste exactly the same every time I get one. Their drinks are solid as well. They use Verve, and now they offer Stonemill matcha too! The only downside to Manresa Bread is that there is 0 seating inside or outside (save for the communal benches outside), so you basically have to take your goodies to go. Stunning offerings of pastries and breads. Good coffee and pretty quick service. They have kouigan aman, which I can never find, and it was all the buttery goodness I could have wanted. It is located in the back of a large parking lot and could be easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it. They only allow one party at a time in each section of the store: the bread section and the verve coffee area. The hours are 8AM until 3PM or earlier if the baked goods sell outso We got several items and everything was amazing! The pumpkin cake was sweet and crumbly. Eeks I was expecting so much better! Cranberry Ginger Scone:  The inside texture was not evenly baked so it was doughy/dense with a baking powder aftertaste. Not the short, crumbly texture I was hoping for. Orange Calamansi Loaf: Nice candied orange, but could not taste any calamansi flavor in the icing. Sourdough Baguette: Really good sourdough with a nice outer crust but very soft on the inside. Would probably return just to buy the bread. Coffee: We ordered a regular latte and a mocha - both were absolutely awful. The latte was watery and and bitter (?over extracted). The mocha tasted like they scalded the milk. We tossed both our coffees almost full. The two baristas did not seem very interested in making our lattes and were engrossed in their own conversation. Their pastries and baked goods never disappoint. Most people love the monkey bread and it sells out early each morning. However, I almost prefer their other offerings with a nice, coffee-forward latte. There's no official seating but there are some benches nearby. Excellent for carrying to-go on a walk. read more

Stopped by to pick up "the" pecan pie that I had heard so much about. I was told that there was no way I would be able to walk in and just buy one because they sold out so quickly and I had to order way in advance. There were at least 50 pies on a cart as we walked in, maybe we just got lucky. I have been buying pastries and coffee here for years, however I have noticed the wonderful service charge they add to your order lately, this has kept us away, somewhat. Getting back to the pie, I would say that it rates as one of the less desirable pecan pies I have eaten and I have traveled in a lot of the pecan pie areas of the US. Omg do I need to say more? The kouign amann is the reason why I made a trip here and EVERYTHING I had impressed me. The cold brew verve coffee was perfection and the barista was very helpful offering simple syrup. Oat milk was available and amazing with the cold brew. I bookmarked Manresa Bakery when they opened in 2015 but didn't make it there until this past weekend since we were staying in Los Gatos. I was secretly hoping they sold their amazing Sea Salt Vanilla Caramels. They didn't but I couldn't leave empty handed so decided to buy several pastries to sample. Maybe my expectations were too high or maybe San Franciscans like myself are spoiled by bakeries like Tartine, b. patisserie, Neighbor Bakehouse, Arsicault Bakery, and ACME but the 4 items I had were meh and weren't even worth finishing. I even made sure to order their best sellers (Kouign Amann and Monkey Bread) but they were still underwhelming. *Kouign Amann ($5): http://bit.ly/2jRHDw5 Really dense and unremarkable. b.patisserie's infamous kouign amann is infinitely better and the best in the Bay Area IMO. *Monkey Bread ($4) Hard and dry. Even microwaving it didn't make it taste any better so I tossed it. *Croissant ($4) Aerated honeycomb interior with good height but it was dry and lacked deliciously buttery layers. It was like a run-of-the-mill croissant that I can get at any corner bakery. Try Arsicault's croissants (voted best bakery in America by Bon Appétit) and you'll never go back to another croissant from anywhere else again. Though Neighbor Bakehouse makes fantastic savory ones. *Sourdough Baguette ($4) I love a good crusty bread but this one was ridiculously hard. It was so tough to chew it made my jaw hurt. Not sure how people with dentures could even chew a bread so hard. Obviously, I'm in the minority here but Manresa Bread was utterly disappointing and did not live up to their name. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Manresa Bread is a simple shop, and while I'm told that the lines can grow quite long during peak times, there were only a few others present during my Saturday morning visit with some friends. We got our pastries and we were on our merry way. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $5.00 is a hefty chunk of change for a single pastry, and not being familiar with the Kouign-Amann the price point itself immediately tee'd up some pretty sky high expectations. Spoiler alert: they were met, and it made this pastry well worth the cost. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This Kouign-Amann pastry (pronounced 'Queen Amman') was exceptional, and I'm desperate to have another elsewhere as some sort of point of comparison to see whether they're all this amazing. A buttery and flaky crust came together with an acutely gooey and flavorful center, and the density of it all was such that it kept me fuller than say a standard croissant would. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? So here's the thing. I loved my visit to Manresa Bread, but given their limited selection and hefty price point I simply can't in any way argue that you're time is better spent here when compared to nearby Icing on the Cake. The breads are uniformly good at Manresa Bread. Not so the sandwiches or pastries. I was really disappointed by the turkey sandwich ($16) I purchased to go, at this location. The turkey did not taste freshly roasted. It had the slightly off taste of cold cuts. The filling for the sandwich was woefully inadequate for the thick and heavy levain bread slices used. I got more bread per bite than filling. The entire thing was so unpleasant that I picked out the cheese and ate that with part of the bread, just so I could get something in my stomach. I fed the turkey to my dog. It was a waste of $16. The dog liked it, at least. Sandwich making is an art. Manresa is a bakery, not a deli. Pastries vary. I don't understand the massive appeal of their plain Kouign Amman pastries. I find them flat and balanced in taste; dry, stodgy and unpleasant when eaten at room temperature; and greasy and soggy when heated. I did like a fruit-topped version I found in the store just once. It was a vast improvement in the plain one. But I have not seen it offered since then. Stick with the breads, is my advice. read more

The issue: the Pain au chocolat are my go-to anywhere; Manresa's was a let down because they sell the Costco-style version: The kind with the unmelted solid-rock .25" thick bar of chocolate in the middle of an abundance of plain dough.
