I arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport at an ungodly hour not because I was concerned about the lack of TSA staff but because I had a rental car to return in the dead of winter. While I had no problem getting to the terminal, I arrived 3-1/2 hours before my flight. Not only did I have an espresso martini at 5AM at the appropriately named Martini (review: https://yelp.to/FLBmD_s2iS) but I decided to have breakfast here because frankly it was the one spot that was open earlier than the other airport eateries. I ordered a much needed $2 Coffee (Photo 2) and the $14.88 Western Omelette (Photo 4). First things first, I noticed only later that I was charged four dollars more without any explanation on the receipt. I should have noticed, but did I mention I already downed an espresso martini? The eggs were strangely overcooked with a paucity of ham and a strange texture to the cheddar cheese. Why didn't I rate it one star? The two slices of Italian toast and the crispy home fries improved the dish. Marginally. Got the Marathon Gyro. It comes with fries or slaw so chose fries. That and a diet coke was 20 bucks. The menu touts Greek fare so a gyro is in their wheelhouse. I'm not that impressed. OK. In fairness, I did lookup whether lettuce belonged on a traditional gyro and it does NOT. Fair enuff because there was a wee bit of lettuce, and, by wee bit, I mean traces, not even a 1/16th of a leaf. So, before I complained here about a lack of lettuce, I wanted to be sure of the intention. Soo, fine. But, still, it wasn't a sandwich worthy of a place saying they do Greek fare. I got the My Big Fat Greek Omelette, which was pretty good (4/5), especially for airport food! The omelette itself was great! It was pretty big, and I really liked the gyro meat! The home fries were also good (4/5), and they give you a lot of them. The toast is ok (3/5), and the tzatziki is also good (4/5)! I was pleasantly suprised by how good and how much food there was, especially for the price and it's location in the airport. I just had an outstanding meal while waiting to depart from PIT. I had a traditional gyro and fries. My wife had their lemon chicken soup. My gyro was incredible. Meat was high quality and had a great flavor. The sauce was excellent. The sprinkling of onions and tomatoes were spot on. The pita was super soft and fresh. The fries were very hot and yummy, just as I like them. Seriously, my meal was outstanding. My wife said her soup was great, too. It was served super hot, which is exactly what she expects. Highly recommend this place. Skip C-Filet right across the path. Skip the new Shake Shack right next door. You can get a chicken sandwich or burger anywhere. They feature a bunch of Greek options (gyros, salads) along with burgers and sandwiches. I got a gyro and fries For the gyro, the pita was soft and tender, definitely fresh. The meat on the sandwich was plentiful and well seasoned. Great portion size Also really the fries that came along were hot and crispy I also appreciate the fact that they sell bottled beverages so you can pack extra in your carry on for the journey. We were at PGH airport for an early flight. Marathon Diner opened at 4 AM. It's in a corridor with quite a few other restaurants. Glad we chose this one. The employees were friendly and prepared the food quick! Got the two egg combo that comes with home fries and sausage or bacon as well as this amazing Italian bread. They have many choices on the menu including breakfast sandwiches, eggs your way, omelets, pancakes and french toast. Loved finding this more "local" spot within the Airport where you are usually surrounded by chains. It was the smell that drew me in! The veggie gyro was pretty solid. I would have liked to have seen some falafel or feta cheese on there for protein. The wrap was a little soggy. Also, I was missing the Mediterranean seasoning from the wrap. When I arrived at the terminal something smelled great! I couldn't tell if it was Marathon or McDonald's. Well it turns out to have been McDonald's. I chose Marathon. I should have gone for the burger but opted for the Philly steak. Bad choice. Paying for it now. Stomach is churning and about to board a plane. Not a good situation. Especially for those sitting near the bathroom on the plane. Poor people. Not sure I will go back anytime soon. Maybe I'll do the McDonald's. I was back in Pittsburgh to pick my daughter up from college amid the rapid COVID-19 shutdown. It had been 7 months since I last ate at the Marathon Diner so I OBVIOUSLY had to come back. May I just say that even though I couldn't eat my omelette (because why would I even get anything else) until I arrived in Charlotte, everything was still so very tasty. Everything was cooked to order and was done exactly as I requested! The woman who was at the register (I think her name was Sherry) was amazing! I'm no breakfast person, especially before an early flight. However, it seemed smart to get a meal in before heading in for a longer flight. Originally we looked at other chains but saw Marathon. Appears to be a Pittsburgh local item, there was one near downtown though not sure if this is the only one remaining. There is a bit of a wait (~10-15min) but it is worth it if you have the time. Crispy, fluffy home fries, tasty eggs and good breakfast meats. Normal eggs and omelette are both good and seem fresh prepared. Price is also good ($10-12/meal) even for airport, I would not be upset to have this at a diner anywhere. The Italian bread is also crispy and delicious, and there is butter, ham, and ketchup/hot sauce which go really well with the offerings. Additionally, they have Greek offerings (gyro and some sandwiches) which looked good and seemed available at breakfast time, but that will have to wait for another day. In short, try this place, you will not be disappointed! read more
