Went on a Sunday morning and was able to get a seat at the counter right away. This diner is on the smaller side, maybe 5 tables and about 10 seats at the counter. Menu is diverse and they had some interesting specials listed. I ordered a raspberry muffin grilled and a slice of spinach and feta quiche with hash-browns. This was way too much food. The muffin was huge and was more than enough to fill me up for breakfast - large portions here. Grilled muffin was great (warm from the grill, soft and moist on the inside with a sugary crunch crumble on top)! The quiche and hash-browns on the other hand were blah and lacking flavor, and I wasn't very impressed and didn't eat more than a couple bites of each of those. Additionally, I was rather uncomfortable while trying to enjoy my breakfast as it was so hot in the restaurant - much better air ventilation is needed. This is our favorite breakfast place in the entire world. It is a big reason for us coming up to visit Portland. Marcy's is the best! Mandy and the people that work there are exceptional and make their patrons feel like family. There are always great specials, muffins, quiches, and the regular menu is incredible. Hubby and I were in town today. No kiddos, were celebrating our anniversary and Thanksgiving this week. We were still on California time, so we barely made it in time to grab some of the best damn food we've ever had! If you can imagine the best ever comfort food and multiply it by 10000, you got Marcy's Diner! The actual restaurant is very cozy. It's an open grill with bar top service and a few booths. Daily specials are posted on chalk boards colorfully displayed underneath the cool merchandise display We ordered the grilled banana muffin and grilled blueberry muffin, quiche, potatoes and French Toast. Everything was beyond delicious! Servings are plentiful. I had to take a to go box for the yummy potatoes! The servers are friendly and on top of their game. Did I say they also have awesome coffee!? I am always down to go to a cash only place, because I feel like the food has to be REALLY GOOD if you're going to have the chutzpah to turn away cards and know that people are still going to want to pay. And.... they were right. I'd pay in cash for the rest of my life if it meant that I could eat here every day. We had grilled muffins to start -- one raspberry and one blueberry. So so good. They don't need butter, but I liked them even more with it. I especially liked the raspberry muffin. For my meal I had the E1 (2 slices French toast, 2 eggs, bacon and home fries) with a coffee. Learned something new today: some servers don't like it if you ask about the status of your order a full 30 minutes after you placed it. They react with passive-aggressive lectures ("It wouldn't take this long if you were the only person here, but you're not") and defensive comments about the 45 min wait (which was to sit down, it shouldn't be to eat). The surly server's colleague later tried to make nice, and I think she was a bit embarrassed too. Aside from waiting for the food it was a fine experience (I put this on the kitchen, not the servers). It's hard to know how to react when one bad moment mars an otherwise enjoyable meal. The place is small, it's crowded, it's uncomfortable: these are all not necessarily bad things. My boy and I went in on a very busy day, but since it's our only day in Portland and the Yelp reviews were outstanding, we made the time. I wish I could spend more energy writing about how my eggs, meat and toast were all delicious, and how my boy enjoyed pounding the blueberry & banana pancakes. Great morning diner spot. Great atmosphere. Good menu. I waited 20 minutes for a table at around 10:00am, that is completely understandable. However waiting more than a half hour for breakfast of corn beef hash and eggs is not acceptable or understandable. Slow service is unacceptable, these people need to figure out a way to get it done faster. Well done potatoes do not take 45 minutes. When I spoke to the waitress and the manager both told me "it'll be a few minutes." People who came in after me got their food ate, and left before my food even got to the table. My fiance and I had brunch at Marcy's a month ago and our experience was awful. My fiances food was fine, overall pretty much what he was expecting to get. My food, particularly my hash-browns and $4 side of corn beef hash was so undercooked it was literally cool. There was not one flake of browned bit in either my hash-browns or corn beef and was a cold mushy uneatable pile. I kept waiting for our server to come check on us so I could send the food back, but he only came to our table to drop off the check, and when I said I couldn't eat the food, handed me a box. I was upset, so I messaged the owners of Marcy's on Facebook (their only web presence) and told them this story. I wanted to give them a chance to handle the situation before Yelping them. Since one of the owners is the cook, I figured that they would take this issue to heart and address this problem professionally. It took almost a month, and one check in on my end, to get a reply from Marcy's. Their response was in short "that's not normal for us, we are usually awesome." They made no attempts at reaching out to a customer they had estranged, or repairing the damage done to their reputation. I've worked in the food industry for over a decade, and I can't decide which was worse; the original sub-par meal, or the joke of a response from the owners. read more

Marcy's is the one and only restaurant I dined in during my 24 hour stay in Portland and we stumbled upon it early Sunday morning when we awoke in our hotel room, were starving and craved more than the complimentary continental breakfast being offered. We arrived around 9:30 a.m. to a full house! Mind you, this diner is very small; there are around 10-12 counter seats and 5 or so very narrow booths. Thankfully, we only had about a 5 minute wait but we were both glad we walked in when we did because within minutes there were 4 other couples waiting to be seated. Service is fast and friendly. Typical breakfast diner atmosphere but it was definitely warm and welcoming. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. I didn't poke much around at the menu because I usually eat the same things for breakfast; I ordered 2 eggs, hash-browns and an english muffin. My date ordered eggs over-easy, hash-browns, hash and an english muffin which he enjoyed and ate every last bite where as I, on the other hand, am a food snob. The scrambled eggs were watery and warm and the hash-browns were undercooked, the only thing I really liked was the english muffin. Even the coffee was cheap tasting. I've always been of the opinion that it's kind of hard to screw up breakfast foods, but I guess I was wrong. Was it the absolute worst food I've ever eaten? My sister and I went here because we wanted to support the owner, who was recently the center of a bit of a controversy, but we will return because the food was good and reasonably priced! It's a SMALL place - seats along the counter on the left (not many) and booths along the right side (not many and SMALL - just so's you know). We took a booth and both ordered the same thing - although I drooled about wanting a blueberry muffin - that looked to be about the side of my head - I was distracted by the raisin toast and ordered that, plus scrambled eggs, hash browns, and sausage patties. I think it's a B1 on the menu, under Favorites. I can certainly understand why because of the size of the place, but be warned, when ordering from the long list of favorites, that they will not accommodate any substitutions. They serve Heinz ketchup - a favorite of mine - and there is a good sized bowl of creamer and butter on the table, which I like - however, there were no artificial sweeteners on the table. I usually use Equal, but I switched to sugar and didn't ask if they even offered anything else. Water appeared immediately, along with coffee. Our orders were taken quickly and efficiently. Everyone we encountered was happy and pleasant, and while we waited - a very short amount of time - for our food, we scoped out the place, which is decorated in a very casual, hippyish fashion, with a row of hot sauce bottles along one wall, including what looks to be a moonshine jug of Tobasco sauce. The food was good and generous. My only slightly complaint was that the scrambled eggs were a bit watery - but not overmuch. The raisin toast was yummt, as was everything else. I barely left a scrap of food on my plate; my sister ate most of what was quite a bit of food. The bill was left conveniently on the table, and you pay at the cashier on the way out. As always, we mused on the way back to the car whether or not we'd go back, and we definitely would, but, because of its size, NEVER on a weekend - I can imagine that the line to get in is around the block. read more

It can be surprisingly hard to screw up the classic diner experience, and we weren't sure what to expect when we headed over to Marcy's on our way out of Portland. Both the fiance and I had lived in the area for so long and always felt the diner food part of the state was severely lacking. Well thank heavens for Marcy's because it hit the spot! This teeny tiny little diner is a must visit if you are driving through the gorgeous state of Maine as it is the quintessential small town diner experience. The quality of food rivals any upscale breakfast joint you may have visited and without the high cost and stuffy atmosphere. From the moment you walk in you are treated like family and not like the tourist you clearly are. Darla is an absolutely phenomenal chef and yet, has no problem coming out from behind her tiny work space to deliver her delicious food to your table herself. She is warm and friendly to everyone she encounters and obviously takes immense pride in her work. Each and everyone that worked there was friendly and provided exceptional service. We all ordered omlettes which were packed with the freshest ingredients and made us all sigh with contentment. Good food, not greasy, great portions. Prices were very good in my opinion. We went for breakfast, but it was definitely a very large brunch instead. All the food is cooked right in front of you, which is fun. We will be regulars. Nothing gourmet, but hearty and very tasty. I knew I would find personality. What I didn't know is that the food would be phenomenal, the prices reasonable, and the staff delightful. It is clearly a close knit family business with a counter full of regulars. On a Sunday morning, our trio waited 45 minutes, which is exactly what we were quoted, before being seated at a booth. We didn't mind waiting 45 minutes at all because we were thoroughly entertained by Doug, who co-owns the diner with his wife, the inimitable Darla. Doug was friendly, accommodating, and checked in on our party throughout our (hungover) brunch. Our waitress and the rest of our staff kept us on our toes with friendly banter and read our minds, bringing us what we wanted before we even had to ask. We each ordered the breakfast burrito and, at Doug's recommendation, substituted the regular home fries with hobo fries - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MAKING THIS SUBSTITUTION. They were mouth watering and so was the burrito. We also got a toasted coconut pancake and a fresh grilled raspberry muffin (I didn't know you could grill a muffin - I have been seriously missing out on this delicacy).
