TLDR: serviceable breakfast spot for a hot, local meal. Had a wonderful breakfast here during a quick, 1 night stop in Freeport. When we walked in you could tell there was a mix of locals and a few tourists and we were immediately greeted like we were one of the locals. It's fairly small with a bunch of tables but it wasn't tight where you couldn't get around. Our server that's been there for 30 years was outstanding and had a great personality. The coffee was decent, and I don't usually like the coffee at diners and restaurants. I had the french toast special made with croissants and it was really tasty. They were not soggy and the side of bacon was nice and crispy. Wife and kids enjoyed their respective omelette and regular French toast. Went with my friends while traveling through Maine. Very busy in the morning for breakfast, but the food is amazing and worth it. They make a drilled biscuit, which everyone has to try at least once in your life. Seriously, put it on your bucket list of foods to try, you won't regret it! This restaurant is incredibly popular with locals and tourists alike. They have your standard breakfast and lunch fare, made hot and fresh. We had a short wait for a table, but we were agreed by very friendly & hard working staff. Our server, Carrie, was attentive and made sure our coffee cups were full. My egg and cheese omelette was delicious, as were the home fries. The cafe is rather small but clean and non cluttered. Navigating around the tables and chairs might be challenging (not impossible) for folks with mobility restrictions. Customers had a bit of a wait for their meals but the food came out hot! read more

I had breakfast here with a friend and although I was not impressed enough to care to return, I will admit some of my disappointment might just be a matter of taste, and some of it was self-inflicted. The server was friendly and efficient. I ordered a homemade raspberry muffin. She offered to grill the muffin, which was great as I usually ask but forget this time. It was excellent. I ordered corned beef hash to go with it. Or so I thought. When I got it I realized it was hash browns instead. My friend told me I had indeed ordered the wrong thing and suggested I ask for the corned beef hash. But as it was my error I decided I didn't want food wasted, and I am okay with hash browns. My friend ordered an omelet that came with home fries. She didn't want the home fries and gave them to me. They weren't quite as browned as I like them but it was fine. She also offered a bit of her omelette, but it was too rubbery and flat for me. At home I tend to make them thicker, brown on the outside and more fluffy inside, but that might just be my taste. So it wasn't memorable for me at all, but your experience may differ. read more

Pretty good breakfast option in Freeport! Freeport Cafe is a bit better in my experience, but this place is less expensive (but no frills). It felt like a true locals spot, the server seemed to know most people by name and there was even an area where a few people (owners/family?) had their names on chairs. We stopped in at the sunrise cafe for a late breakfast on the way out of Freeport. It was a bustling spot at ~10:00 AM on a Monday morning. I had 2 eggs over medium with hash browns and rye toast. The eggs were cooked well, and came with a healthy serving of shredded hash browns and 2 slices of buttered toasted rye. An assortment of single serving jellies were on the table. Perfect greasy spood little hole in the wall breakfast spot. I had perhaps the best tasting English muffin here as part of a delicious sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. Too warm and stuffy with no ventilation. Waitress took a while to acknowledge us. Menu is diner type food. Prices are reasonable. Tables were not clean, and it was not so packed that they had not had a chance to clean them. We moved from one table with syrup and jelly only to find our new table had grease on it. Eggs were light and fluffy. Grilled English muffin was nice and crispy. Bacon was quite thin but crisp and tasty. Grilled potatoes tasted like they were seasoned with kerosene. Not sure if it was the oil, some odd spice, etc. but it was definitely funky tasting. Waitresses all left en-masse at the same time for 10 -15 minutes to "Check the weather" which was quite odd. read more

We are from Florida, and we stumbled upon the Sunrise Cafe last year. We're back in Portland this year and made it a point to go there today for a late brunch. Hubby got pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious, and perfectly cooked bacon. I got a breakfast that came with eggs, hash browns (best hash browns ever) corn beef hash, toast and beans. I definitely couldn't finish it. The service was fantastic, and the food was served quickly. I also had a pineapple mimosa that was awesome! We ordered some takeout food for dinner that we brought back to our Airbnb. We'll probably go for breakfast again before we head back to Florida next week. My wife and I stopped in for breakfast on a quiet Monday morning on our way up to Bar Harbor. The Sunrise Café was located away from town and away from all of the crowds and drama in a small strip mall. A quaint local mom and pop breakfast spot. My wife ordered the cinnamon raisin French toast with a side fruit salad and I ordered the blueberry pancakes with a side of sausage. As coffee snobs, we thought the coffee was ok. The French toast was nicely cooked in a tasty batter and the pancakes were large with a nice amount of blueberries. The three thin sausage links appeared to have been cooked fresh and were tasty. The fruit cup consisted of all fresh fruit and nothing was canned. Nice portion to share. The service was very good and friendly. We were in town for a wedding, and after two late nights, we were ready for coffee. There was lots of it and freshly made. We enjoyed so much more, however, at the Sunrise Cafe: from the lovely, friendly, patient wait staff, to the ambience, to the delicious eggs--and yes, coffee. The Sunrise Cafe is just on the outskirts of town but far superior to anything you'll find in Freeport. Alas, we don't live nearby, but we'll make an effort to visit again when we're in the area. Delicious hash browns, wonderful breakfast sandwiches, and perfectly cooked eggs, exactly as we asked for them. Stopped at this place for breakfast this morning, our waitress who was young with dark hair was pleasant, but the older waitress with the short hair was the rudest waitress I have ever encountered and that says a lot because I was in the restaurant business for over 25 years and we also eat out about 4 times a week.My husband had a complaint about his corn beef hash, which he stated to her and she proceeded to yell loudly at us making a scene and throw her hands in the air, saying she would get the owner. The owner approached us with even more of a attitude and loudly asking "you want to talk to me" my husband yes! But quietly, she began to berate us by asking have we been to the store lately and did we know what the cost of food was at the grocery store,he responded by saying yes every day, she then said would you like me to make you more we both said no, she then proceeded to pat on the back and in a condescending way and said " don't worry I got you.This restaurant did not make me feel welcome from the minute I entered there was no one waiting ahead of me, but I stood at the door for almost 10 minutes. If you're ever passing through and not of a certain persuasion I don't advise stopping at this location, because I really felt that the disrespect that was shown towards us was because of the color of my skin and nothing else. read more
