I have gone to less expensive restaurants that taste better than their food. But the setting was beautiful and the service was good.

I had read a few mixed reviews prior to making a reservation at Mare, but ultimately decided to give it a try. You enter downstairs and take an elevator up to the rooftop, be aware there is a dress code! I'll start by saying this place has a great atmosphere. There is seating on either side of the rooftop and floor to ceiling glass windows that give the entire dining area a beautiful al fresco vibe. I someone mention that the restaurant was not up to COVID guidelines, but I couldn't disagree more. Servers wore masks, disposable menus were provided and tables were all set plenty far apart. I started of with their "crime of passion" signature cocktail and it was delicious. We then ordered the raw bar tower along with arguably one of the best charcuterie boards I've ever had. Our server Josh made our entire experience extremely enjoyable- and I will definitely be back!!! The restaurant is a bit pricey, but in my opinion well worth it for a night out! read more

I came here last week to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends. We were a large party of 16 people. From Mare's impressive cocktail list, phenomenal food and exceptional service I would totally recommend this place. Our server, Milanna, was very attentive to our table and took very good care of us. Management was super personable and helped us to decorate the table for this occasion. After dinner we spent some time in The Igloos. Loved the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate. My husband and I had an amazing first visit to Mare! We have been trying new (to us) restaurants since they started re-opening during the covid pandemic, and happened upon Mare through OpenTable. We were drawn to the fact that they have outdoor seating and the menu looked great. Upon arrival, we were disappointed that the outdoor seating was closed due to weather, but the hostess sat us near an open door so we still felt like we were outside. The restaurant is beautiful and minimalist with tons of natural light due to the open atrium glass ceiling. Our server (Erin?) was friendly and accommodating, and found a great balance of being attentive but not overly intrusive throughout our meal. Our drinks were delicious and refreshing ("Derby drink") and the burrata salad starter was yummy. The stars of the show were our entrees - I had the filet and my husband had the short rib. Both were spectacular! I can honestly say this was the best filet I have ever had - I was blown away! It was soooo tender and flavorful, and the accompaniments were awesome! Those whipped potatoes were so dreamy! We dined at Capital Grille and Hemenways last week and this filet blew those out of the water (both are great restaurants, but Mare was superior!) My husband's short rib was tender and bursting with flavor, another awesome entree! We didn't save room for dessert but left incredibly satisfied and ready to return in the near future! My wife took me for Father's Day, we ordered some appetizers with dinner. We waited for a while and no one checked to see if our apps came out. They finally brought out our dinner and didn't bring out our appetizers. We asked about them and then they brought it out, yes they apologized for it. Then at the end, not only didn't they discount or take off the appetizers that didn't come out till after our dinner was already at the table, they automatically put 20% gratuity on your bill, they're doing contact less. So you feel pressured to leave 20%, let's just say wasn't happy with my Father's Day dinner. read more

Where do I start? Making a reservation for a large party (11) was ridiculous. Called a week ahead and was told someone would call to confirm. Nobody did. Called again a few days prior was told again that someone would call and nobody did. Called 2 days before and I was told they had no idea I had ever called and wouldn't give me my request time. But yet, we had a plan so accepted the new time. Arrived as a group at the scheduled time (8:30 on a Saturday.) Positives- it was a gorgeous night and we are an amazing group of people. Negatives--- the service was SLLLLLOWWWW and terrible. We sat at the table for over 3 hours. And the food was so sub par that most of us chose not to even finish our meals. A couple in my group even left hungry. The time between the first entree getting to the table and the last entree was about 15 mins. Polite people wait for everyone to be served, but not this night. And.... there were MANY open tables- so being busy was no excuse. If you want a pretty place to go then try it. But, don't go hungry or thirsty! read more

If God is merciful, I can survive the body-wracking food poisoning I caught tonight from Mare Rooftop long enough to finish this review. But before I tell you about the main course I dared to try - one that may or may not kill me - let me preface my comments by saying I have extensive experience when it comes to preparing fish; I've worked in some of the best restaurants in New England, I've fished these waters my whole life, and I've worked alongside my brother who runs a tuna charter in MA. You may not know this, but you actually have to make an effort to screw up a fish dish. I don't know what possessed me, but after waiting 45 minutes for some pretty sad, gritty octopus, another 45-minute wait resulted in the cod I ordered. Now, cod these days is pretty risky to begin with - it's often ridden with parasites, but I thought, "well, they have the stones to call this place "Mare", so maybe they'll pull it off." Wrong. WRONG. Whatever arrived was festooned in a badly-paired ragout and I-don't-know-what-else. So I pushed that mess off the "cod" (which I'm pretty sure was actually the oft-substituted white hake) until I found the actual fish. Already suspicious, I tried a tiny bite, and the moment it hit my tongue I knew it was spoiled. Not "just past prime" spoiled - I mean, this fish had turned. It was so far gone that my tongue immediately began to tingle as if I'd just tasted incorrectly prepared Fugu. The kitchen had no business trying to foist this fish on one of their customers, and believe me, the chef knows when he or she is sending out questionable fish. In this case, I have to guess that whomever prepared it just didn't care. I sent it back and paid the check as fast as I could before I lost my appetizer and pedestrian roll all over their floor. In their defense, the waiter was extremely apologetic, but admitted that the kitchen "was screwing up a lot" that evening. And they didn't charge me for the "cod". I think...it's getting hard to see...are the lights out? Oh, sweet Jesus...help... read more

I wore a knit beret and was asked to remove it even though it's not a baseball cap (dress code says no baseball caps). I was also the only minority/person of color in the place during a slow afternoon. A lot to ask for a place that serves casual food pizza and everyone else there is in sweatshirts. Overall, extremely disappointing experience. 1st they "lost" our reservation that I made 3 weeks in advance for a 5 person table. 2nd we ordered a bottle of wine they apparently "do not carry". The server returned to the table 25 mins later (no exaggeration) to notify us of this. We then asked him for recommendations as far as Pinot Noir goes and his response was "I normally just go for the cheapest bottle. They all do the trick". I was so embarrassed that this where I chose to take my coworkers to dine. I have received a higher level of service from a McDonalds. The manager just stood in the doorway and never once made an effort to come over to our table when we were visibly unhappy. We decided to do drinks and hold off on dinner because we didn't have hours of our time to burn. What a waste! read more

Came here for dinner in the dining room, and then wanted to have a seat in one of the outdoor heated igloos for drinks to close the night out. Honestly, if it wasn't for our experience in the igloo, this rating would have been higher. Our dinner was perfectly fine. We were seated promptly, our server was attentive, and we enjoyed our meals. I started with the octopus appetizer, which I recommend as a must, if you come for appetizers. Great flavor, and cooked perfectly. I had the scallops as an entree. It was all very tasty, and my husband enjoyed his linguine with clams also. I will say service was a little slow, and our entrees should have been out quicker, but it wasn't a ridiculously long wait. I also found the dining room extremely loud, due to the acoustics. It was a busy Saturday night, I'm sure it's quieter on non-packed days. The manager came over after our meal to see how we enjoyed everything, which I always appreciate. He was very friendly, and even helped me with my coat. Nice touch. Anyway, moving on to our igloo experience... it was the last night for the igloos, and we were really excited to check them out. Firstly, they need to add a second heater in these maybe, because it was still pretty cold, and we were sitting right next to the heat. I was really looking forward to caramel hot chocolate listed on the menu, but the server came to take our order and he rudely informed us that the season is over and they aren't serving hot drinks. He acted like I was crazy for even asking for it, and it was all downhill from there. I wasn't looking for an alcoholic beverage, I just wanted a nice warm drink, so I asked if they had tea, to which he replied "you want TEA...?" In the most judgmental way possible. Well no, I didn't. I wanted hot cocoa. But apparently the season is over, even though I'm sitting in an igloo, staring at the snowman and Christmas tree decor in 28 degree weather looking at a menu who's whole top section is hot coco options... so yes, I'll have tea.... 2 other members of our party also ordered tea, to which he condescending comments "turn up", mocking us for not ordering real drinks on a Saturday night. Thank God one person ordered alcohol, but it was too late, he already hated us. Sorry you wanted more money out of us, but it's your JOB to be friendly and provide good service. So he brings our tea, slams the sugar down, and is equally rude to the other group of people we shared the igloo with. We knew it wasn't just us when we heard them commenting on it as well, stating that they didn't know why he was mad at them and how he rolled his eyes when they asked for change. It was honestly ridiculous, and ruined a perfectly nice night. When he brought our check over, he struggled with the igloo zipper and made a scene of forcing it open, and then just stuck his hand in to hand us the check. He obviously hates having to serve inside these igloos, and I can see how it would be annoying for the servers, but again.. it's your job. Don't take it out on paying customers, even ones who just want tea. read more

It's kind of crazy how nice the place is and how good the drinks are... The food, however, is AWFUL. Even the raw bar is kinda wack.

My husband and I came here for a few cocktails and appetizers before our night out on the evening of May 4th. We found two seats at the bar that was located outside. Our bartender (unsure of his name) was rude and provided terrible customer service. It took a bit to get a menu and to be acknowledged. When he finally made his way over, he wasn't the most pleasant bartender to my husband. He eventually made our drinks but never came back to us, not even once, knowing we wanted to order food - as we specifically asked for the food menu. I got the attention of another bartender and gave her our order instead of our original bartender. The oysters were pretty good and the rest of the food we got wasn't bad. It's a shame the first bartender completely turned me off as a first time customer who's been looking forward to coming to Maré. read more

On Thursday 9/23 I went to Mare restaurant to book it for 20 ppl for my girlfriends birthday on 9/29. I spoke with manager Mike Degnan. Let me give you the short version... - asked him to talk with owner about a better price... His comments between 9/23 & 9/29... ‐ why would he do that for you, he doesn't know you! - if you don't want to do this you don't have to...(told this at least 3 times, even after he was told nvitations had already gone out) Yesterday morning on the day of the event, I finally had enough and canceled. His response... "I don't think you ever intended on coming... C'mon this was not the place for u" Hmm, not the place for me... is it that My money is not green enough, or my skin is not light enough??? I was thoroughly disgusted by his treatment toward me. He is the face of this establishment. The first one you come in contact with when you are looking to book this place. I would never, ever go to this establishment again! I may not have as much money perhaps as their other clientele, but it is still the same color green. I guess the days of being told you don't belong in this place or that place is still very much alive. Shout out to Chapel Grille in Cranston, RI who stepped in 9 hours before the event and made it an absolutely incredible birthday for my lady! read more

Ugh this has been my 4th time here and service seems to get worst and worst. First we were told that it would take 20 minutes for a table when they were at least 4 or 5 visibly available. Supposedly those were reserved and this was at 8:30. So that was a lie!!! Well it took well over 20 minutes for someone to take out us to our table. Once we finally got our table it took another 20 minutes for our server to come over and take our order! Overall this place is more of a hanging out spot to grab one drink and screw, would not recommend for dinner. read more

The setting is lovely which is the reason why my rating is a 3 instead of a 1. We called for a 5:30 reservation and were told the restaurant could accommodate us at 5. We arrived on time and we're seated right away. The hostess explained that the wait-staff was in "Pre-meal" and would be with us shortly. At 5:15 someone filled our water glasses . Again we heard about "pre-meal" and that our server would be with us as soon as the meeting was over. He arrived at 5:35!! Obviously a significant lack of communication between those taking reservations, seating patrons, and managing the wait-staff. We knew what we wanted since we'd spent over 30 minutes waiting so we ordered right away. The food was served quickly and was delicious. Note, this restaurant has signs stating that there is a 90 minute limit at the table. Fortunately they did not try to enforce the policy. read more

Mare Rooftop was on my list of "must try" food spots in Rhode Island solely because of the enticing Instagram views. I am also a sucker for a good rooftop. We were happily sat on the rooftop where relaxing vibes and city/parking lot views awaited us. I enjoyed the vibes. Now, onto the food. For our appetizers we ordered the cheese board. It came in a beautiful presentation, however, I was disappointed to be met with zero meats. As an Italian, you must have some meats to pair with your cheese. The goat cheese was phenomenal, the honey and candied apples were good, but other than that it was not rememberable. As for the entree I was happy to see Gluten Free options and ordered the "Linguine Vongole" which was clams and pasta in a white wine sauce. As seen in the picture below of the menu, it clearly says, "Gluten Free Pasta available in Penne or Linguine." I ordered Gluten Free Linguine. When my meal came out, it was with Penne. I told the food runner that I ordered Gluten Free Linguine and he said they do not provide that but they will double check. The server came back and said that they indeed do not provide that. I stated that it is written in the menu, but no resolve. That was a bit misleading and confusing. As for taste, the clams were decent, but other than that this was not memorable or mouthwatering. read more

We sat inside and still enjoyed a beautiful ambiance. Our food and drinks were spectacular. The food was very hot and fresh. Did I mention that on my birthday in January I was harassed at the front door when my wife and I came for a dessert. Somewhere around 6:30 pm we went in the downstairs lobby, I was dressed in warm winter coat and a baseball style hat, casual style, no logo or hip hop style. My wife was wearing a nice winter coat and scarf. The doorman starts telling me I have to "loose the hat" or I can't go upstairs. Ok, I took off my hat, but the tone, the attitude was kind of an accusation as if I am "a troublemaker". I remind you that at 60 years old plus, all I was doing was protecting my head from the extreme cold. Certainly I do not need any attitude, I don't believe the strong armed approach was appropriate. Polite would have been the correct approach. Anyway, we went upstairs, no host, no seating seemed available, we were already turned off, so we left. Finally a month and a half later I decided to write this note as this wrong needed to be aired. As I said, the tone of enforcement of a dress code makes a big difference, the restaurant can say the doorman was merely enforcing policy, but is enforcing policy supposed to be obnoxious and rude? They have right resources, infrastructure but  lack of  proper  coordination, communication  between management and resources to cater to the need of the customers. Execution capability matters! Here is my experience on Feb 16, 2019 at 10pm - I thought I chose the best place to propose to my fiance when I read their menu and services especially about the igloo. It was impressive to go through their website about  igloo and have found it in Providence itself,  but in reality it was a different story in terms of services. Sad. I wouldn't recommend to reserve igloo in the winter season especially. I ended up getting sick for next one week after coming from here. They had just one small heater, which wasn't warming the igloo at all. We were super cold. I had asked them to decorate my igloo considering to them of my wedding proposal which they did it nicely, but somehow front desk manager wasn't aware of the kind of igloo I had requested for and they put us in wrong igloo. Moments after I realized and found we weren't in the right igloo and then they put us into the right igloo. About the waiter services - personally all the waiter/waitresses were nice, but at least 3 different waiters/waitresses showed up saying they will be taking care of us. We were confused. They had mentioned we will be having igloo menu on their website, but it was just a regular food menu without entrees. In fact they didn't have anything other than pizza, which we ordered as we had no other option. I felt like we just went to regular place to eat and drink. I thought when we reserve with 500$ we are entitled to get an upscale experience, but that wasn't the case. They gave us 100$ off, but that wasn't my expectations at all to get a discount but to have full of fun, cozy experience inside the igloo. It was a disappointment for me. Great brunch! Food was delicious, drinks were great, and the service was fabulous! I had the traditional breakfast. The eggs were seasoned perfectly and the hash browns were delicious! Really enjoyed my first experience as the cheese plate, drinks, and atmosphere was wonderful. I went back tonight with a friend and unfortunately the fairly expensive lobster salad was small altogether and reportedly had half of an unshelled lobster meat in it but as a lobster lover, this was not true. I was pretty disappointed in the meal for the price and the waiter didn't really offer any consolation other than the claim listed above. The salad was drenched in dressing making the lobster tasteless and a complete waste of a meal. I hope it gets better as I think the location is amazing. read more

The food was uninspired - the pizza wasn't even hot, the cocktail sauce for the shrimp was right out of a jar. We went for lunch and ate dinner. We arrived at 2p, waited long for our drinks, we waited long for our apps and then our meal did not arrive until 3:45pm! Almost TWO HOURS! This was after complaining to the managers twice. We ate our meal (which was good) and received the check. The manager apologized but then nothing was even comped! In addition, they actually charged us $2 for ice in our drinks. The restaurant was not full. We will not be returning to this restaurant....and will advise our friends not to either.
