The place feels like a playground. Bright colors everywhere, magnetic letters on the wall, and I even saw them making the ice cream in the back. Just a fun vibe all around. I went with the Take 5 they recommended. Peanut butter caramel ice cream dipped in a dark chocolate shell with little pretzel pieces. It smelled really good right away. First bite, the shell cracked and got that snap from the chocolate, then it goes straight into the creamy peanut butter caramel. It's smooth and rich, Then the pretzels kick in with that salty crunch and it just balances everything out. Sweet, salty, creamy, a little crunchy... all hitting at once. The unique flavors is what pulls you into this colorful place. I tried two flavors - mango lassi and s'mores. I liked both and would buy again. The mango lassi didn't taste artificial and was creamy. The s'mores didn't have an overpowering marshmallow taste and was a good level of sweetness. It's a pricier dessert, with bars varying $4-6 each. Seating isn't the best. There's 4 small tables with a bench on one side and a small stool on the other. During my visit, only two tables had a small stool. There is open space but it's more for casual seating and probably not the most comfortable. They have two clean bathrooms and both have a changing table. One even had a separate trash can for diapers. They have a window into the kitchen where you can see staff members making ice cream. There's a couple things about Pretty Cool Ice Cream that are, if you'll pardon the pun, pretty cool. First, puns, love 'em! Second, the concept that as opposed to getting your ice cream in a bowl or in a cone, you get them on a stick... and they're made in-house as opposed to some factory off-site. They have a pretty wide selection with everything from your simple and basic vanilla and to something as adventurous as a hot wing flavor. Surprisingly, I went for something in between, that being the Ricky's Coffee Pretzel Toffee. In terms of flavor, this ice cream pop delivered. The pretzels, toffee, and coffee flavors and textures were not in hiding. To be fair, it wasn't the best ice cream [pop] I'd ever had, but pretty neat in an ice cream shop/ I cannot understate the points I am awarding for creativity. Regrettably, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. There were a couple things I wasn't super thrilled about. First, their prices seem a little bit high. The ice cream pops aren't big, they cost 6.25 plus tax. Secondly, while they do have an okay vibe inside, the seating is not conducive to spending a couple of minutes and hanging out. My dinner with my niece at Akahoshi was over so quickly, we weren't done talking and Pretty Cool Ice Cream was the only place within easy walking distance for dessert (and the Akahoshi folks suggested it). I was a little surprised that it was only ice cream pops that were available as opposed to scoops of ice cream in a cup or cone with possible toppings. It was also late towards closing time which may have explained the lackadaisical attitude of the young woman behind the counter who was not really interested in selling us anything and seemed to begrudgingly explain what was in the various ice cream pops. That definitely influences my review. The ice cream pop was smallish but good, and we were able to sit and chat for awhile until we were told to leave as it was closing time. I wished they'd had their ice cream sandwiches as the pop I had was not particularly memorable. Now that I'm perusing their website I appreciate the ice cream more knowing it's handmade onsite, but none of this was obvious to me when we were ordering. Since I didn't like Akahoshi, I'm unlikely to make the trek back to Pretty Cool either, but it was nice to try it. it might have been more fun to eat an ice cream pop if it was hot outside and vended from a small stand or food truck. read more

I absolutely love this popsicle spot. They have two locations and the staff are always friendly. They have pony pops which are minis for kids. The strawberry and lemonade have been a huge hit in our household. We love that the regular ice creams are often collaborations with local chicago restaurants and they promote local artists who create the wrapper art. Our absolute favorite flavors are the toffee coffee chocolate, orange creamsicle and the chicago brownie. I love the horchata and the grasshopper (mint chocolate) but I have to be in the mood and the cinnamon and mint flavors are a little more stronger. When I visited Chicago for vacation , I stopped by Pretty Cool Ice Cream twice! I thought it was really unique and something I've never seen before. I love their whole model of unique popsicle and ice cream flavors and their creative packaging. I tried their Thai Tea, Mango Lassi, Strawberry Buttermilk and Banana Cream Pie-sicle. All of them were good. I will say the Banana Cream was a little heavy, but the Thai Tea and Mango Lassi were on the lighter side. There's so many options, you can't go wrong with any of them! It's also really cute and casual in there and the workers are really patient as they know theres so many options to choose from :) I would definitely get Mango Lassi again but would love to try other flavors!! read more

We came directly after leaving akahoshi ramen, and what a great way to end a meal. Very unique selection of flavors, even a few non dairy options. Service was great, friendly and helpful. Let me first start off with the employee who was helping us was the most sweetest person. She took her time to describe each ice cream that we were wondering about before choosing. The interior design inside is very chill, they don't have tables but they have steps you can sit and chill out while eating your ice cream. We tried Pretty Cool Ice Cream Shop this afternoon and were disappointed. I ordered the Dreamsicle, it didn't have hardly any orange taste at all, it's dipped in a skimpy orange shell coating. My friend ordered a basic chocolate ice cream bar and she told me that it didn't have a typical ice cream taste. When you are charged $5.75 each they should be head and shoulders above the rest. The reason I wanted to go there in the first place was they had ice cream in what appeared to be a sugar cone of some kind on their website. There wasn't any ice cream at all, I even asked the counter girl. It has a strange layout like you're in a daycare center.
