Our party of four had a wonderful experience at Maria's Tex Mex on Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very spacious. We had two servers, one of which was in training. He did a fantastic job of attending to our needs! The chicken fajitas are delicious and perfectly cooked. One tried the Tortas and loved the flavor. They are new to the menu. Food is delicious!! They are generous with their portions, they also use seasoning. The service is exceptional every time we go there.

We tried to get into Off The Rail's Mexican in Buford and there was a 45 minute wait on a Saturday so we went to Maria's instead. Should have been clued in by the fact that the place was almost empty. Server was very nice and inexperienced but at least she tried. Manager came by several times, brought us free cheese dip but that wasn't enough to make up for poor food quality. The cheese dip was good but the salsa had very little taste. One member of our party described it as "water." I have Maria's Shrimp (bacon wrapped shrimp on rice). The sauce was tasty but VERY salty, I mean inedible salty. Add that to the salt in the bacon and the shrimp being overcooked to hard chewey consistency and the dish was awful. Wife had Chicken Tortia soup. It had lots of chicken but also was VERY salty. Why do restaurants do this? Salt causes high blood pressure and if customer's want more salt it's easy to add at the table. Adult daughter ordered a Daquiri. After several minutes waitress came back and said she didn't know how to make that so she was waiting on someone else to make it. When it finally arrived my daughter couldn't taste any rum in it. Nobody at the table could. Sent it back to the bar - when it finally came back we still couldn't taste any rum. Wife ordered Sangria. After a wait we were told they were out of it. Seriously - alcohol is a restaurant's highest profit item, if you're only going to get ONE thing right, get your bar right. We were concerned about coming because of all the bad reviews but we decided to try it for ourselves. Honestly it was pretty good. The vegetarian fajitas were Really nice with big chunks of zucchini and mushrooms. And the burrito Al Capone ,was really good . Chips and salsa were pretty standard. And the strawberry margarita was good , Although I honestly could not tell the difference between the 16 ounce in the 20 ounce. What I come back yes. Fun decor as well. And our service was great. Our group decided to check out this restaurant after my sister's baby shower. The atmosphere was fun. We could talk and laugh and enjoy ourselves without feeling weird. Our waiter, Alex, was fun and helpful. I appreciate that he laughed with us and was attentive. My drink never ran out because he was on top of it. I don't know about the rest of y'all but that is a big deal for a waiter to be on top of drinks. The food was delicious; Everyone liked what they ordered. I especially was surprised by how good the flavors were. I usually cook at home because I feel like restaurants often stick to the bland and boring flavors to play it safe. But at Maria's the chicken fajitas especially are so delicious... bell peppers perfectly cooked. And oh my gosh the Guac was SOOO good. Plenty of parking by the restaurant, a cute area to walk around for a bit! Some staff wore masks. There is indoor and outdoor seating areas. The restaurant is big enough that everyone is socially distanced since it was pretty empty. We were seated right away. The service just was not there. The waitress was all sorts of confused when taking our order. We had actually ordered the ultimate fajita quesadilla but decided to just let it go since she seemed so overwhelmed. Chips and salsa - first one is on the house and then you have to pay. Guac dip very standard. Blue Lagoon Margarita: tasted good but lacked in the amount of alcohol. Could barely feel any buzz. We ordered the half pitcher thinking it would at least be a cup and a half each, however, it just about fills up to one cup each. For the price and the amount I would have rather ordered two different drinks. Empanadas: it comes with 3 and you can mix and match. I ordered 2 beef and 1 chicken. The beef one tasted good, but the chicken one was really dry and lacked in flavor. Ultimate fajita: good flavor and the meats were tender as well. It comes with 3 fajitas per order. You can choose from either corn or flour. So we were dining in around 7pm, right while we were still eating the staff starts mopping the floor with heavy smelling cleaning supplies. It was so strong it was difficult to enjoy our food because all we could smell was the chemicals. The food wasn't bad but the service was horrible. Full Review: Inside: Maria's is a nice little hole in the wall in a Publix plaza. The interior is lit dimly for ambiance, and the typical American Mexican Restaurant themed paraphernalia adorns the walls, lights, and bar. 6/10 (bar seating) Drinks: I got the 20oz Frozen Peach Margarita. I started to doubt this tasty treat's alcohol content because it was so sweet and tasty. After half a glass, it hit, and I realized these margaritas were nothing to play with! I was the only one at the bar on a Friday at 5 pm, and my margarita was swinging! I'd definitely come back for drinks! 8/10 - I like a little bite to my drinks, and the bar seating was awkward to eat due to an arm rest. Food: My complimentary chips were standard fare, but my salsa tasted pre-made. I got the "Ultimate Fajita" with chicken, steak, shrimp, chorizo, carnitas, bell peppers, and onions. If you like meat to taste like just that "meat", it'll do it for you. Personally, I prefer a little char or extra seasoning (garlic, pepper,spicy, salty, umami, etc.) to my meats, but this is the middle of the row as far as my tastes. The carnitas, shrimp, and chorizo were the best part of the meal with chorizo easily at #1. I like the salty taste to the chorizo. The carnitas have a slight carbonified char taste, and the shrimp is well rounded on seasoning. Bellpeppers and onions also add a salty, umami, and almost make up for the chicken and steak. Overall, it doesn't create a ubiquitous experience for me when combined in a tortilla. There is nothing wrong, just not tasty enough to be "good" or "great." Rice and beans were good, and the plate they came on was hot. My corn tortillas were greasy (in a good way) and hot! Separate, there are some pretty high points. 6/10 - It's not bad, and I think most people would like it. The Latin flavors should be tapped into a bit more to give this restaurant an edge. The portions are a tad small for the price as well. I suspect the flavors are a tad subdued in the interest of broad appeal. By far the worst experience in A long time. I ordered a gin and tonic in a tall glass. It came in short glass and there was zero gin in it. I sent it back and she put in a slighter larger glass and just added ice. Ordered a spring salad with chicken. The chicken was way over cooked and had zero flavor. Our friends ordered chicken quesadilla and the shredded chicken had zero flavor. No spice at all and the tortilla was uncooked. The soup was good. Our server asked us how our food was and we told her not good. She sent the manager over and we explained everything. She brought me a gin and tonic and it was straight up gin. Couldn't drink it. Last minute dining out and decided to give Maria Tex Mex a try. First thrilled that our family of 5 was given a LARGE booth with plenty of room. Big booth is a rare option! Service was EXCELLENT, we were constantly checked on, chips & salsa refilled (loved the chunky salsa) and drinks never empty. We got one of our must have's ~ queso. One of the best, a bit thinner so it soaked into the chips and great cheezy flavor. I had the taco salad, very fresh, chicken very moist and probably the best taco shell I've ever had. Son got the cheeseburger & fries ~ was HUGE and perfectly done full of extras. He actually took half home. Everyone who got tacos said they were good. Decor isn't heavy, so felt open and welcoming. First and last time eating here. The food was beyond bland and flavorless. The only thing with any taste were the peppers to the point my wife was convinced she was manifesting COVID symptoms. The addition of seasoning salt made it mildly more palatable. Rice that looked like Spanish but tasted like white. Beans that tasted canned. Salsa that tasted like plain stewed tomatoes. The plate did not come out sizzling even though it was served on one of those sizzle type plate. Onions and peppers were very soggy as if they were sitting in the back for a while and not freshly made. The chicken were perfectly cut strips like they came prepacked that way and very dry.
