If I could pick a grocery store to live at, I'd pick Mariano's. I mean this place has everything! From groceries, to a hot bar buffet, pizza by the slice, sushi, a bar, and even a piano player setting the mood! They have an awesome selection of food items, cheeses, organic produce, and pretty much all that you can think of that a grocery store should carry, and then some. There is even a seating section where you can relax by the fire place and listen to the pianist play some tunes while eating your meal from the hot bar. It is a little bit pricier than your standard Walmart or Target groceries, but not by much. Did I mention that they have an awesome bakery department? Catch me by the donuts and cupcakes all day errday. One minor mishap that happened during my visit was with the rude lady working the wine bar last Saturday afternoon. It just so happened that their registers were offline and credit card payments weren't going through. So we put our food down at a table that had someone's jacket and chicken wings on it. Turns out it was the bar lady's chicken wings that she was sneaking bites out of in between customers. Bar lady wanted us to go get tables upstairs and when we explained to her the situation that we had to wait to get properly rung up, she walked away with an attitude, chicken wings in hand. That serious huh? Anyways, I just took a star off for that incident. Other than that, Mariano's - I heart you!

Good craft beer selection...but no packs to put them into :(

In picking a Mariano's, it can be hard when there are four within 15 minutes of home. Well the Bucktown Mariano's may be pulling ahead for me! First things first, Mariano's as a whole is a great chain. They open at 6am on weekends which I enjoy greatly. I'm a morning person who likes to get up and get the day going! Doing my grocery shopping first thing when the world hasn't awoken just yet, that's my jam. I love big store prices but hate the crowds. This Mariano's has a good sized ground parking lot but I always finding myself parking upstairs where there is far less congestion. Anything to make my life slightly easier! Mariano's Bucktown has~ +A wine bar! Glasses of wine were $7-10 while beers were $3. Not bad at all but just bottles for beer which was disappointing there were no drafts. Not the most amazing beers I've seen either, mostly standard craft options with one cider. +Good cheese selection with great prices. +Awesome craft beer selection, including a huge grab & go create your own 6 pack. I was stoked on this option! ....until I saw they had no packs for actually making my 6-er. I didn't think bringing up loose bottles would fly, so sadly I got no beer on this trip. +Sushi Bar! Prices didn't seem terrible though they weren't heavily discounted either. +The usual Mariano's bakery with a nice array of baked options at good prices for the consuming. +Cute seating upstairs and it looked like the coffee there might be free! Whaaaaa. +Juice Bar +Gelato stand +Todd's BBQ Stand +Oyster Bar Be sure to go online on Friday and add their freebie coupon to your card! Every little bit helps people. :) I really liked this Mariano's and am not quite finished checking out all in my vicinity but this is definitely a top contender for being my favorite!

Sometimes when I'm trying to find "international" ingredients at Mariano's or something it's hit or miss. I found what I needed here and it was a fairly quick trip--I don't think I was in store more than 20 minutes. The store is small, and very very crowded. Aisles are about as wide as a single person facing forward. This isn't a place where you're going to get a shopping cart down an aisle. The prices are good. I got a head of Napa cabbage for 99 cents per pound, and when I go to my neighborhood store it's usually closer to $3-4 or more per pound. Since it was such a steal I added hot and sour soup to my menu for the week. There's a parking lot at this store. It's one way, and you must enter from Archer. DO NOT enter the wrong way or you won't be able to park--the spaces are angled and there's not enough space between the building and the fencing to turn yourself around. There are only about ten parking spaces here so I'm sure it gets filled pretty quick, but when I was here I was the only car parked here. There's street parking which can be pretty chancy, but maybe I'm just speaking from the perspective of someone who was here on a busy Sunday in Chinatown.

They rather stand around and say self-checkout is open. People know about self-checkout, clearly guest will rather go through the regular check out. Those males they have over there in the deli have ruined the quality of the hot or cooked items over there. I've heard a customer request the $1 item and they said there wasn't any more they'd have to cook them, THEN turned and said they wouldn't have time. They stand back there moving so slow it's unbelievable. The one guy with the real thick glasses has a real nasty attitude. Every time a woman asks for something he's speaking under his breath about them. I hear because I stand a wait for another guy to come available because I never want to deal with him and he speaks negatively of the customers because they have request. Personally, I decided to just go to other locations or other stores, if I want something from the deli. The store is clean, but it be so crowded.

A line for grocery store fried chicken? Absolute cinema. People have been recommending I get into fried chicken reviews, and I've resisted as I really don't want to get fat, but this was the perfect storm to start a grocery store fried chicken review journey. I got to the front in the line and felt like a fish out of water. I sheepishly asked the employees, Darius R and Damariea J, what the move was as it was my first time getting fried chicken from here. I thought they'd be annoyed, but they were so helpful and welcoming. "Today is actually wing bucket Friday! A whole bucket is normally $17.99 but today it's $9.99. I can give you some of everything so you can try, but the spicy wings are my favorite." Hell yeah. Darius was the MAN. I took my tissi and wing bucket to the UIC campus for consumption. The tissi was a brick and landed at a 6/10, which currently ranks it 71st out of 94 grocery store birds I've tried, but the fried chicken was INSANE. Darius wasn't lying, the spicy wings were next level. The best grocery store chicken I've ever had. Boomin the Publix fried chicken. Shoutout to the Darius' and Damariea's of the world. Good people. As always, I am looking for new fantastic restaurants, and stores to try out, and share with: family, friends, and on Yelp. As you walk in it seems like a common corner store, groceries in the front, meat towards the rear. When I walked to the back I had a pretty good hunch this would be a great one. The fresh smell, it was very clean, and the amazing eye catching signage. You could feel like you just walked into in a sweet little store in Mexico. When they handed me the food I ordered I knew was on the right track. When I took my first bites I smiled, and knew, I needed to share this place. I was intrigued by the Pozole Verde sign out front. I had never had it before, so I placed my order for that and zero regrets. It comes out in a quart container with a plastic wrapped foam tray with: chopped onions, cilantro, radish, shredded cabbage, and mexican oregano. I added mostly everything but went easy on the oregano. The chunks of chicken were tender and not overcooked. The hominy and vegetables were just right as well. They have this to a science and it has to be near perfect. Now to the tacos: As you often see in neighborhood grocery stores the chorizo was hanging in back above the meat counter, so a house made chorizo taco was a given. The Al Pastor was reccomend by the one of the butchers, and I had a steak taco to round it, and myself, out. All I can say is that like the pozole everything was superb. Even the salsas.. I wish I knew of this place when I worked and lived in the area. I would definitely have known everyone there by name. I still smile thinking of it, and next time I'm in that hood, I will be there. I look forward to trying out a few more menu items, and picking up some of the fresh meat. So maybe don't slap Grandma... but you should at least pick her up and take her out to lunch here. Enjoy! #AlfieEats
