Mariano's has killer produce and a great selection of fish, meat and deli stuff. Theey always have great sales on produce that is in season. I bought some red velvet apricots here that rocked my world. They also have a nice selection of bulk grain and the like that is priced reasonably. The fish is amazing and fresh, but really expensive. I'll still head to Valli Produce for my fish. You have to look around, but they do have quite a few items that are priced lower than other stores. For example, a pack of tortillas is about 33 cents as opposed to 99 cents at Aldi. Also, toiletries are unusually low priced for a grocery store. Their gourmet cheese selection is second to none. Food is good - customer service is spotty Called to place an order at the Sushi department - was directed there by the main number. Was on hold for several minutes. Tried to call back both the Sushi number and the main number. Finally a man answered and "explained' that the Sushi department had only one person working it an was "on break" and the people at the main number did not know this (hence did not answer the phone when I tried to call back) No apology only "did you want to place an order / what did you want?" I guess I should have figured out the employee was "on break" myself and the manger is doing me a big favor taking my money. read more

I like to keep fresh flowers in the house in memory of my father so I buy a bouquet bi-weekly. Their roses are more expensive than at Jewel and only last a pitiful few days. The first time I bought them I thought it was a fluke but the other 3 times the same thing happened. Save your money on flowers for Jewel. Mariano's in Hoffman is very accessible to me from work or home and offers some great bakery and prepared food options. Look, the service is excellent, the deli above average, bakery great and they have wonderful oven baked pizza and the like. Their salad bar is popular and I like that I can get a full sized Salmon dinner for 7 dollars, which is very reasonable. The issue is they aren't great beyond that for the health-conscious consumer (not their target demo) and the prices on most everything else is going to be significantly more than Aldi down the road without much of a quality difference. The lay out also isn't the best and I find myself walking a lot in a given visit...but hey, it's exercise and since COVID, I definitely could use it. I think this is the definition of a 3 star place: good, but with significant weaknesses as well. If you aren't a penny pincher, and you love you some prepared food and what looks to be good seafood, than this might be the place for you. Kinda disappointed. Recently I received a gift card for Mariano's. Ever since the first one opened in Arlington Heights several years ago now, I've been telling myself that I have to check Mariano's out. But I never did. Heard good things, maybe even had some of their food that someone had bought - but never stepped foot in one of their stores. Getting a gift card made this a must. The Hoffman Estates store was a convenient stop recently, so I headed there. The produce display was pretty nice - lots of it and laid out well. But I was interested in the deli and headed straight to it. Good selection and the guy that assisted me was really helpful. I did order some American Potato Salad, in part to see how it stacked up against other American Potato Salad's I've had. It wasn't all that great - kind of grainy texture and no real distinct taste. I've seen better grocery store deli's - Heinen's and Sunset Foods come to mind. Same with the meats and fish - good but not great. Prices overall were about the same for ordinary groceries, maybe a tad higher for specialty items unless they were on sale. But there were two things that I wasn't fond of and hence the three star rating. First, it was kind of dark in the place - especially as grocery stores go. It's like they were trying to save on the electric bill. Second - to save money there you have to have a "card". Most of their marked down items had the "with Card" in small print at the bottom. This was my first experience there - I didn't have a card and I wasn't going to rush to the CS counter to get one not knowing if I'd care for the place or not. I was hoping the checkout person would give me the card price - I thought I'd wait and see. So when I went to check out, she asked me, "do you have a card"? I told her no, this is my first time shopping at Mariano's. Did she give me a discount? No. Did she tell me I could get a discount if I went over to the CS desk to sign up? No. Paid the non-cardholders price. Overall the checkout person was pretty indifferent - again, Heinen's and Sunset Foods do much better here. If all the Mariano's stores are like this, I'm not sure what all the hullabaloo has been about when they've opened. Had I scored the experience on expectations alone, I'd give them one or two stars. This grocery store reminds me of Whole Foods in a way with all the prepared items but not really at the same time. The neat thing is all the different prepared food items they have available. There is a sushi bar, gelato station, smoothie station, hot food & salad bar, deli where you can build your own sandwiches/paninis and probably more but that is all I encountered on my visit. While working in the area we stopped here to grab food for dinner on our way home. Unfortunately during my visit, a lot of the hot food items were out and I didn't see them being restocked. I ended up getting some chicken and mashed potatoes from the hot food bar. There were a ton of options so it was a tough decision so I just went with a comfortable default. The woman checking out in the middle of the food area was kind of... harsh? Not friendly, not mean, just keep the line moving type of attitude. I like the concept of this store and find it neat they will grill meat for you! I would come back! read more

Well folks, Kroger foods has destroyed another fabulous grocery store. Cheap cold cuts. Mariano's had Dietz and Watson, made tuna salad, macaroni salads yum. No more. The beef quality NOT the same. They use to have a fabulous cheese department, not. There use to be small cubed prosciutto packages no more. The fresh orange juice fresh squeezed area is so small almost gone! Fresh Vegetables and fresh fruit quality is not the same. The atmosphere of the store missing. Employees are just there no enthusiasm and spring in their step. They were happy to help a customer find one for that. I'm done. It's a sad day. They no longer have the assortment of unique grocery's that made you go even if you had been running around doing errands and were tired. You never minded stopping. No more great samples. WOW! That's all I can say about the cupcakes I ordered at the bakery this weekend for a bridal shower. They were soooo delicious and beautifully done. Great price, too. I was told by the bartender that one of the servers had a real sweet tooth and asked if he may he have one of the leftover cupcakes. I watched him eat one and the expression on his face made it look as if he had died and gone to heaven! . They were made with the buttercream/Bavarian cream mix frosting. Yumm read more

Mariano's was great when they opened. Not the case now! Their produce and meat quality has fallen dramatically. We bought Jimmy Deans sausage two days ago. It was ruined! Other meat we have gotten there time and time again has been tough. Jewel (who used to be the worst) has upped their game and beating Mariano's in both of these departments. Was craving a smoothie and knew Mariano's had really fresh ones. Stood in line and the two women did not acknowledge me. Finally one of the ladies said be right with you, mind you I was next in line because it was me and one other man. An older woman cut in front of me and started placing her order and the cashier/smoothie maker helped her first and pretended like I wasn't even there! I wouldn't just be standing there for no reason especially in front of the register. I was trying to be polite and wait my turn but apparently barking orders and cutting in line gets you service here...I ended up leaving with no smoothie and pretty upset. read more

With the exception of the young girl who made my smoothie, and the young man at the butcher counter, it was a terrible experience today! Upon check out the cashier did not even acknowledge me! He was too bust looking around at things going on in the store. I had to ask the bagger not to put raw meat products in with my deli meat. Am I the only one who considers this cross contamination?! So on the way out I asked a young gal if there was a manager. She was and I mentioned the bagger incident and she told me - very rudely - he did nothing wrong as that is how corporate trains them! Literally the best sushi bar around the area, does not get better than here and the people there are so friendly. The soup is also spectacular.. Especially cream of chicken and rice and cheddar broccoli! The hot food bar is amazingggg the Mac and cheese is to die for. And they have the freshest bread too! Mariano's is a great place to shop and eat. Normally, when people say they want to be the best at everything, it's pretty much hyperbole. In this case, it's kind of not. Indeed, it's hard to write a good review for Mariano's because they do so many individual things better than many other places- and I want to write individual reviews for A) their espresso/ gelato bar B) excellent sushi bar C) fine lunch buffet D) superb bakery E) delightful deli F) amazing butcher G) terrific produce and H) almost-too-good-to-be-true-generic brand and I) generally outstanding store that is well organized and modestly priced. And as you can see from all of those letters, individually, this review would be much too in depth and long for you, the reader, to care. Probably. Sufficed to say, all of the above are incredibly well done, and add up to an outstanding shopping experience every time. Before I go into a few specific reasons why I love this store, I would like to contrast this store with my least favorite supermarket, a market of true unadulterated treachery, Jewel. For the uninitiated, Jewel is an establishment Chicagoland supermarket that, for decades, has had a fairly strong presence in our communities. Jewel leveraged their position in the market for decades to make grocery shopping unpleasant through high prices, poor produce, gradual replacement of trusted brands with their own piddly and awful generics, delis with lousy customer service, long lines, and slow checkouts. They've even been accused of price fixing the cost of milk with another dastardly supermarket, Dominick's (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2000-08-25/news/0008250400_1_milk-consumers-milk-prices-competitive-grocery-market) which has since died and become even worse since it's now owned by Safeway. Jewel denies the price fixing, but I'm still curious why their milk costs two bucks more than it does everywhere else, or why their chicken can cost up to TRIPLE what other places charge. Growing up, a trip to the Jewel actually meant a "a trip to the Jewel and at least two other places so that we can buy other things and not go broke." In contrast, Mariano's is incredibly pleasant in every way. Here are some reasons why: 1) It does have a generic brand, Roundy's, and I will just say this: it's as good as or better than the stuff it claims to impersonate (Roundy's ham off the bone in the deli is the best deli ham I have ever had. Also they have perfect clones of Oreos and Chips Ahoy. PERFECT CLONES). 2) They also have a reasonably priced (and huge) selection of organic/ non vegetables and meats ( Ilike that you can choose, unlike Whole Foods)- and they'll grill any meats that you want to buy right there in the store. 3)The deli slices test samples of all the meats and cheeses to confirm the thickness you desire- and then give you the sample to munch on. 4) The store is clean, well organized, consistently boasts fair and even cheap prices, and the employees don't seem to hate life. 5) The checkouts are well staffed and fairly quick. I've even gotten great tips from employees during checkout like "Try the fresh squeezed orange juice" (BEST TIP EVER). 6) The coffee is excellent and has it's own buyer rewards program.... 7) The awesome bakery, fresh popped corn, live piano player, fresh sushi, delicious soups, the list goes on and on. It's just a consistent pleasure to shop at this store (and at their other locations- I have been to a few), and it's saved me so much money. What else can you even ask for??? They nailed it. In short, Jewel is an arrogant and offensive company. My hope is that Mariano's will crush them. Based on how many new locations they are opening, rumors about Jewel and Dominick's stores in trouble, and the amount of things to love about Mariano's stores, there is that one day my supermarket-eliminating dreams will come true. It's nice to see competition working as it should in our neighborhoods again, because when competition works, consumers win. And in this case folks, we win big. read more

This is a glorified Jewel or Dominicks with Whole Foods prices. I shop a lot at WF, and at least I know what I'm getting in terms of meat and seafood. I know there's no nitrates, antibiotics, inhumane animal treatment, and hormones in the meat/poultry there, but Mariano's advertises their "all natural" meat, which means nothing to me, and it's just as expensive if not more so than Whole Foods. I actually asked a butcher about their "all natural" meat and how it was raised, and he said its probably raised like any other cattle, and he shrugged his shoulders (factory farm I take it). This "certified Angus meat" means it just comes from an Angus cow, but people think it's super special. WF doesn't advertise "certified Angus meat" but you know it's quality because it didn't come from some factory food farm where the animals are pumped up with heaven knows what. While the selection at the Schaumburg WF leaves much to be desired, the quality is much better than Marianos. I found the seafood to be much better quality at WF too. I've tried both stores. Therefore, why should I pay WF prices or more for this over hyped glorified meat and seafood? $12.99/lb for cod - the cheapest of fish???!!! I can also buy in bulk at WF and save even more money. Their friesh Italian and chicken sausage was around the same price as WF's too, and at least at WF I know its nitrate free. They couldn't tell me at Marianos if it had nitrates. I will give it an extra star for the nice sushi bar (I actually dislike the sushi bar at the Schaumburg WF, but not at their Chicago locations), and the selection of food you can have on the fly for lunch or dinner, but this store has really gotten greedy and has taken advantage of starry eyed shoppers by raising prices on the same kind of meat you can get at Dominicks or Jewel. Don't even get me started on the produce. The citrus fruit was pathetic, and there was moldy and expensive fruit, again, similar to Dominick's or Jewel. Their organic produce was good, but it's more expensive. Go to a good Mexican market for produce, and you'll find it a million times better and far less expensive. They were giving out samples of dried out pub burgers on the day I came (made me less enthused), and the cheese is again, also as expensive as WF. If I'm paying good money to shop somewhere, I expect it to be better than Dominick's, Jewel, or some other large chain grocery store that buys from factory farms. Sorry. Took my kids to eat at the gelato bar and again, they're used to WF gelato. My daughter said it was the worst gelato she ever had, and it looked full of artificial color, and heaven knows what. At least it was $1 for a tiny kid size. BTW, I don't work for WF, and I'm not trying to impress anyone with WF. While I love the Chicago stores, I actually wrote a scathing review for the Schaumburg WF, but I like the idea of spending your hard earned money at a place where you don't lose sleep over where your food comes from, or what it has in it. It is also more expensive that Caputos, but I think Caputos has the worst produce ever. read more

Their prices range depending on what you buy, but I've always found them very reasonable, even cheap (especially if you get their in-house Roundy's brand [Edit: I recently discovered that my brand of cat litter is $3 cheaper per bag at Mariano's than it is at PetSmart down the road!]) For the first time I actually find myself looking forward to going grocery shopping! It's like a mall for food, and so much fun to shop at. - Nice decor - Great customer service - A near-professional level bakery with beautiful cakes and unique donuts like maple bacon longjohns (and the best Irish soda bread I've ever had) - Soup, sandwich, and salad bars (my friend drives from the other end of Schaumburg just to get their sandwiches) - A sushi bar (actual sit-down, not just prepackaged sushi) - Gelato and coffee bar (and they always have hot chocolate or apple cider out for free - get a small gelato for $1 and you'll finish it just as you go to check out) - Brick-oven pizzeria - Tons of hot prepared food - Butcher with tons of choices of chicken, beef, and seafood, included specialty sausages - and as others have mentioned, they will grill your food for you however you like free of charge! - Large juicer on site with a wide range of fresh-squeezed juices in all size containers for sale - Juice bar for the fancier stuff - A decent selection of organic and exotic fruits and vegetables - Two aisles of international foods (there's more located around the store, too) - Cheese area comparable to Whole Foods (in quality, size, and price) - Fresh caramel apple station - A fairly large selection of alcohol, including a walk-in beer fridge and a wall of higher-end wines (and the prices aren't bad... my favorite low-level wine is the same price here as at Binnys) - A live pianist performing by the checkout area And last but not least, my favorite part: SAMPLES! They usually have cheese samples out but on Saturdays they turn it up a notch. Nearly every area will have something, from thin-crust pizza to spicy sausage, cheese and fruit to wine and beer, yogurt to toaster pastries. My friend and I spent an hour today walking around the store tasting everything we could find. The wine and beer samples were the best! We tried two different types of beer and six types of wine, and got a good education from a rather excited wine enthusiast in the process. I love this grocery store... But with a few disclaimers. This grocery store is very often out of stock with some core basics that are a necessity. For example they never EVER have basil. Come on Mariano's if you run out of this item every week then order more so your customers don't have to make a second shopping trip at a competitor. In addition we always attempt to order specialty sushi rolls and they NEVER have the ingredients. If you don't consistently have the ingredients then take them off the menu. Other than some vital out of stock issues this grocery store is by far the best in the area and leaps and strides above Dominick's and Jewel. I love shopping at this store even tho I have other grocery stores much closer. Their food is fresh and beautiful, and the meat department is outstanding. They are even willing to do special orders for me. Their prices on regular groceries are the same or less than Jewel and they have a much better selection. My only gripe is the produce section is very small and hard to navigate with a cart. And I wish they had a barbeque station like their other stores. But that's not enough to keep me away! read more

I really would love to leave a 5 star review, as this store is so close and convenient and they have a great selection of produce and I have been buying many organic items here. However, my biggest pet peeve is the fact that they not only offer, but push plastic bags every single time I shop here. It's truly baffling as it leaves a bad taste in my mouth every time. I am shocked how many people do not choose paper, which btw doesn't cost them anything extra. Obviously midwest hasn't arrived in this century yet and doesn't understand the impact these plastic items have on our planet (ignorance is bliss) but a store like Mariano's should be a leader and simply discontinue plastic bags if they care about our neighborhoods and our environment. Don't feed your family with this garbage!! I purchased some NY strip steak and it was the worst type of meat ever. Normally there isn't that much fat in a strip steak, but mine was loaded with fat. I don't even want to think about the condition the cow was in when it was butchered. Just the best grocery store I have ever been to! I feel like they follow the Disney recipe for success: a clean environment, top notch customer service, the best products and items just to WOW! you! The WOW! Factor: hiring police officers to make sure we can merge into traffic easier or just the hot bar foods. This used to be my go to place since opening. Quality products and superior service kept me driving 20 + miles to shop. Sadly the superior service is virtually not as important to the store anymore. Went today to order flowers for sons prom, Olivia and Kristen in the floral department were everything but helpful. I loved being able to get something different and pretty yet these girls gave me attitude when I was requesting something different fron the typical roses. They told me all about what they couldn't do including using the black ribbon as they are almost out. Really go get more. The deli group there are times it's like pulling teeth to get the right slice as requested. This store needs to get its amazing service back and make it a priority. The Wheaton store fortunately still has some pretty amazing folks so I will make the drive and give them my business going forward. read more

While the store can be an absolute hectic mess (like all the time - how does that happen??), they do a really good job at keeping it clean and mostly stocked. There has been a time or two when the produce is picked over and there isn't much left to choose from, but that's what happens. The deli, bakery, and coffee bar employees have always been super friendly and courteous. Mariano's coffee is actually now ranked in my top three. The flavor is great, the price is great, and it's nice/fast service. Also, they had great in-store samples when I was there this past Sunday. Keep it up, Hoffman Estates location! :) read more

If Stanley's, Whole Foods, and Shop and Save had a baby- it would be Mariano's. I went there for the first time today (TIP: Don't go on a Sunday if you don't have to!) and had a delightful experience. The organic produce selection was EXCELLENT and priced like my favorite Stanley's on North Ave and Elston- but with a much bigger selection. I got a smoothie and the folks behind the counter had no problem answering my questions about which ingredients were organic in the smoothies (which the greens WERE. Woohoo!). The Green Detox smoothie was yummy and reasonably priced ($5 for 16oz). I didn't see anywhere to recycle my plastic up tho.... The staff was friendly, nice, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful- I asked about organic garlic (which was not out) and one of the gentlemen went to the back and brought it out for me- so cool! However, the coolest thing BY FAR was the live piano music and the fact that out of nowhere I heard the Zelda theme playing, followed by the Mario theme. Kudos to the Piano player and Mariano's for having a frickin piano in the store! Cool, classy, hip. Things that could use improvement: the fact that the organics/specialty foods are scattered all around the store and difficult to find amongst the non-organics in each section, and the weird/boxy layout of the wine/produce/bakery/bulk areas. Also, the international flags, although pretty, cover up the signs describing what's in each isle in certain places. Overall, I'm looking forward to going there during a non-peak time and explore more fully everything this store has to offer. Nice job Mariano's! read more

This location is my favorite of all the Mariano's. Whenever I go there's always ample foods to sample. I have been in love with this company ever since the location in Arlington Heights first opened! I see Mariano's as a much more affordable Whole Foods. Their bakery items are heavenly and I never leave without buying some fresh made focaccia! One of my favorite things is that if you buy seafood or meat they will cook it for you on the grill with no charge! So if you're ever in a hurry or you can't cook you can grab some salmon or NY strip steak and have them cook it while you go grab a nice bottle of wine and some side dishes from the salad bar! Viola a great meal that took you no effort at all. I've been here a couple of times during the lunch hours and they have lunch specials. The meat department cooks up different items such as a mahi mahi sandwich that they serve with chips and a beverage. And lets not forget the Gelato!! I have never been disappointed with any of the flavors. Don't be afraid to ask for samples they will happily let you try all of the flavors. I just only wish that Mariano's was closer to me :( read more

And I don't think I have ever had anyone bag my food properly- which is really annoying because I load my food on the belt in groups that make sense for bagging (my first job was bagging groceries!). I have to say the associates here are beyond AMAZING!!! I shop alone with my 8mth old son and everyone there is so friendly and asks if I need help. They make fun small talk and make you feel so welcomed. I always find good deals and leave so happy. Today I was so pleased. I was in the checkout and the associate monitoring the lanes who was obviously very pregnant and on her feet was still there with a huge smile she could see I was having a hard time and came over to help me load my thing onto the belt. I am sure she was tired and had sore feet from standing but she was so kind. Not only is the staff amazing to are the other customers today was the second time someone offered to put my cart away for me.
