I grew up eating this Pizza. My older siblings grew up with Johnny's and Fast Break, but this was always my spot. I even worked at the Carvel's next door (don't laugh, i met a lot of girls at that job!) I would have to do a serious side by side double blind placebo controlled taste test to decide where M&S or Johnny's had better pizza, but it is not difficult to say that Mario and Salvo's has by far the best non pizza items. First, I will start with the Pizza. Great thin crust pizza is a dieing art form, even in New York. Thankfully, Syracuse still is teaming with this uniquely American creation. M&S' crust is tasty, chewy, and well, crusty. Not rubbery, beady, and or tasteless as has become the norm with almost all mass market pizza, and even a lot of smaller places. The sauce isn't cloyingly sweet, nor salty and over spiced. Just redolent enough of tomatoes to set off the cheese. The two main standouts of the non pizza menu are the baked ziti, which comes with more or less the same pitch-perfect sauce, and a big 'ol sausage. And the Eggplant Parm. Uhhg, I still have dreams about that eggplant parm sub. The eggplant is sliced thin and breaded, it is so good, I am prepared to offer eggplant an honorary membership to the meat club. Finally, the best thing about this place are the people. The owners still work in the store, and will get to know you, great you warmly if you've been out of town for a while, and of course, make you a great pizza. The slices are perfect- big and filling but not so doughy that they leave you feeling stuffed. The flavors are great and I thought the cheese crust was just crispy enough. I also ordered medium wings and asked for hen with extra sauce- I wasn't disappointed! The wings are a good size and cooked to perfection. I would suggest ordering them and eating them there. When they brought them out, they had steam coming from them and were great. The extra sauce was the best part. I think their dressings might be homemade. Salvo was in, which was cool. They certainly operate like a NYC fast-paced place, so don't be put off by the lack of "warm and fuzzy" attitude. The food is more than worth it. read more

Sister and I found this hidden gem thru a Yelp search on our quest for late night pizzas, when we got the munchies after seeing a movie. I've lived in Syracuse most of my life and only JUST tried Mario & Salvo's for the first time. The flavor was delicious, chicken was tender (I had a slice of buffalo chicken), the texture had the right amount of crunch and stretchiness. Twin Trees was our fave and then we tried Mario and Salvo's. The pizza is consistently great. They also have really good meatballs and when you put it on a pizza, it's divine. This is it. This is the pizza and wings you want to eat. I have been coming here for over a decade and it has been consistently excellent pizza and excellent wings. It is best for pick up or eat in. It is a pizza shop- so just a few tables and a big screen tv. The pizza has thin crust, an excellent sauce and just the right amount of cheese. And if you are in the mood to try something different, their chicken wing pizza is great! Bites of chicken with hot sauce, cheese on their excellent crust. After hearing about Mario and Salvo's in the paper, I thought I'd give it a try. Apparently, everyone else in a 50 mile radius had the same idea. Mario and Salvos is located in a little strip mall. Parking is tight. You need to show up as someone is leaving to have a spot. Kind of sub-optimal. First of all, the pizza here is actually pretty good. Thin, chewy crust. I would have liked it if it was a little warmer. I also ordered some wings and garlic knots to give them a try. The wings were OK. They were probably sitting around a while. Never got any garlic knots. I was told I wasn't getting them as I was paying. Apparently they took my order but were out of them. I want to talk about the customer service a little. When I ordered my pizza at 6, I was told 30 minutes. When I got there 30 minutes later, I don't think they had started to make it yet. They were pretty backed up. I think they must have had at least 30 to 40 pizza orders to fill and getting more with every ring of the phone. The guy who I talked to was apologetic and said it would be another 10 or 15 minutes. I told him my name so I would know when it was ready. 15 or so minutes later, I saw my name on a pizza box go on top of the oven. It took me another 10 minutes or so to get someone's attention to get my pizza and wings. When I finally got the pizza, there was no sorry for the wait or anything like that. It was kind of off-putting. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal, but the owner seemed like an unfriendly guy, but it could have just been the situation. The rest of the employees seemed friendly but just frazzled with how busy they were. I give them a pass because of how crazy it was. I'll have to try it again at some point, but after the hype dies down. I'd like to get my pizza for pickup in less than an hour and not after sitting on top of the oven for 10 or 15 minutes. After years of hearing people rave about this place, we finally had their pizza. And we're in no hurry to do it again. We had the house special/works style pizza, vegetarian special, and garlic knots. Crust was decent and you get plenty of toppings, but they're from a can. Sauce was forgettable. Canned mushrooms have no business being on pizza in this day and age. Broccoli on the vegetarian special might have been frozen or canned, it was certainly cooked within an inch of its life. Both pizzas had a large amount of canned black olives- tasteless and mushy. I've had better pizzas with fresh toppings from the national chains. Garlic knots were fine, but nothing special. The fact that people love this place shows you how hard it is to get a good pizza in this very Italian city. read more

I scanned through all the 1 to 3-star ratings and detected one common pattern. It's not surprising that these reviewers had something else in mind when it comes to pizza. A good NY Style pizza is supposed to be greasy. It's from the good cheese. The cheese on a good pizza is supposed to be stringy. Again, it's from the good cheese. And, so on... And, if you're not careful, the good quality NY Style pizza will burn the roof of your mouth. That is a fact. Just ask any NYC native. With all that being said, Mario & Salvo's does offer something far better than the run-of-the-mill Upstate pizza, that includes their dough and sauce. It even has well used stained shakers for garlic, oregano and crushed red pepper on the counter. What else is there to expect from a good pizzeria? Note: I took away one star because of the grumpy old men that serve at the counter, the relatively higher price and the small selections on the menu. read more

I ordered a pizza for delivery on June 7th and paid with credit card over the phone. Delivery to my hotel was timely and the pizza was hot. I gave the driver a cash tip. After reviewing my online statement on June 9th I noticed he added $3.00 to my tab. I called and spoke to Mario explaining what happened. I was told that he would take care of the issue but nothing was done. Only $3.00 but if driver did it once he will do it again. Poor practice. read more

Average pizza, slightly over priced, and their employees were very rude to my friend on the phone. The next night we thought we'd try them again, and it took about 2 hours to deliver a medium pizza only 5 minutes from the store (we called after an hour and half, and all they said was "be patient bro" after originally telling us it'd only take 40 minutes). When it finally arrived looked like it was sitting out for 45 minutes then was re heated. For the price, customer service, and food quality, I wouldn't order again. read more

I never ever give 5 stars. This place is worth a try! Best pizza, pasta, bread and salad. I'm a trained chef and do restaurant consulting. I also had a catering company for 18 years. This has got to be one of my favorite pizzas in town. The simple American-Italian pizzerias where you pick a premade pizza and they warm it up in an oven for you is something you'll find everywhere in Syracuse. Yet the simplicity and the thinness of the crust has its charm here. I wish there were flavors than the standard ones, but the standard ones did it. The service was prompt but not over-the-top. NYC dwellers are accused of being provincial, and I am no exception (I moved here in '07). Frankly, Syracuse is WAY outside "The Pizza Line" (the imaginary boundary beyond a major city where the pizza starts to suck), and no Syracuse pizza comes close to an AVERAGE slice of NY/NJ pizza. Must be the water - which has been the reason, I'm told, why there are no good bagels up here either. Mario's pizza is OK to get you through the day, or to drag the kids when you don't feel like cooking. But they're not the friendliest guys, and the lighting is too harsh - not to mention being poorly placed to in front of the TV. There's nowhere you can look without a blaring bare CFL lightbulb in your field of vision. Robbie T's in Jamesville has a better sauce, a better vibe, and the owner meets and greets every single person with a smile, some friendly words, and always shows an appreciation for your business, no matter how small. Given a choice between the two (among others), if I had the extra 7 minutes to spare, I'd go to Robbie's, but Mario's is still good enough to get you through. Oh, and if you try to go Mario's during lunch hour, you'll never find parking. read more

Tried this spot for my first time last week. As normal, I always try a slice of cheese pizza before putting a place on my go-to list. Ordered the slice and waited to the side. The place was very busy but noticed that some customers got extra attention - i.e did not wait in line to order. One of these lucky customers ordered 2 huge slices and was boxed 4. I was hoping I would be lucky as well. Unfortunately, when my slice came out, it was so small, I ate it in 4 bites - must have been a 12 inch pie cut into 8 slices. That said, the pizza was excellent - just not enough of it and I felt like I was an outsider. read more

Great pizza for this area. It's floppy NY style pizza. May be a bit too greasy for my liking, as I tend to prefer to eat this pizza cold whenever I order it. I like Pavone's a lot more, but they don't deliver. Mario & Salvo's is the best pizza in the area if you are getting delivery, that's for sure. 3 stars. The real star here is the crust. Nice and crisp thin outer, with a fresh, doughy center... fold it up and manga.. kind of reminds me of seniora Pizza on Thompson Road. That's where the similarities end though, because the sauce here was mucho flavor- lesso. Cheese was okay, but they warmed my slices up too much and the damn stuff nearly burned the roof of my mouth. Shouldn't places know better? For the price of the slices, they werent very big either. Overall I think 3 stars is pretty damn generous considering the fact that this pizza was very blah and flavorless. I think it needed some salt and maybe a little more garlic. So I'm sitting on the couch trying to figure out what to have for dinner after a long day. The angel on one shoulder is telling me to cook a well-balanced meal involving lots of dishes and the chopping of veggies. The devil on the other shoulder said, "Get a slice." Enter Mario and Salvo's. This place is excellent, not for gourmet pizza, but for the kind of pizza that has the perfect crust, a layer of gooey cheese, a little grease for good measure, and delicious sauce. Add to that the customer service (there were nearly 12 men buzzing around behind the counter, and I was greeted by 4) and you have an excellent meal on your hands. YUM!! Bonus: I was served by Mario himself, and he offered me a drink gratis while I waited and expedited my order. You can tell that he knows everyone who walks in the door. Stopped in for a slice. I never order it raging hot, when the slice came out it was perfect. Taking the slice and folding it old school it held its integrity. That's what makes a good crust. There was enough sauce which was not oily at all and just the right amount of cheese. Will be back for sure !!! read more

I have been enjoying this pizza place for several years now. I love the meatball sub, calzones and eggplant. I always felt safe in this restaurant until this past Monday. As I was trying to back out and pull into a closer parking spot, another car blew his horn at me. I had not seen him. Once inside he harassed me not once, not twice, but three times. Then, he continued to talk about me in Italian to the two owners and employee. He was intimidating, a bully and I was scared he would hurt me or do something to my car. No one came to my defense. No one told him to knock it off. I am a 62 year old, 5 ft 3 inch, 145 lb woman. He is a 40ish, 6 foot, 200lb.man. I apologized several times and he just kept at it. What would have happened if I had backed into him? I probably would not be writing this. read more
